The Sticker Price Problem in College Admissions

As we all know, the cost of attendance price on your college or university's website isn't the price most students pay when they become a student and get to campus. And that lack of clarity is beginning to cause real confusion for an already uncertain class of prospects, and their parents. So, what can - and should - be done? Today's podcast guest is Teege Metttille, a former HigherEd enrollment officer at several different campuses over many years, and who currently advises students and parents as they go through the college selection process. This dual experience has given him insights into some of the disconnects colleges and universities have accidentally created between themselves and the audience they hope to serve. On today's show, Dan Tudor talks with Teege Mettille about his observations and ideas that college leaders would be wise to listen to. For the article that Mettille wrote that is the basis for this conversation, go here: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7430997236270137345/?originTrackingId=FusMXtA28lzD5w10eqqGhw%3D%3D For more on Teege, and to contact him, click here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/teege-mettille-91303376/ For more on Dan Tudor and Tudor Collegiate Strategies, and their work with college admissions departments all over the country, visit dantudor.com/admissions or MondayMorningAdmissions.com. Asking the Right Questions, and Giving the Right Answers

On this episode, we talk to Bob Stocking, who is going to teach you something you probably didn't know you needed to know how to do: Asking the right questions of your prospects, and making sure you answer them in a way that communicates what you want, and why they should ultimately cho0se your campus. Bob is one of the lead trainers at Enliven Work, and internationally respected communication firm working with some of the top companies around the world. He teaches professionals the right way to ask questions, and the best way to answer them. Overcoming Your Prospect's 'Distance From Home' Objection

On this episode, nationally recognized Higher Education recruiting expert Dan Tudor talks about effective ways to address and overcome the objection of "you're too far away from home" or "you're too close to home". We talk about 20 questions, statements and strategies that can move you past this objection, and keep your process going forward. Here are the 20 main points we cover in the podcast: 1. Isolate the Real Objection “Help me understand — what specifically about the distance concerns you?” 2. Normalize Before Reframing “A lot of families feel that way at first.” 3. Translate Distance Into Development Far = Growth. Close = Supported Independence. 4. Shift From Geography to Outcome “Let’s talk about what you want the next four years to produce.” 5. Introduce the “Temporary vs Permanent” Lens “Four years is temporary. Career trajectory is permanent.” 6. Deconstruct the Fear Safety, Homesickness, Cost, Social Fit, Travel Logistics. 7. Use Micro-Commitments “If distance weren’t a factor, would this be a top choice?” 8. Provide Comparative Framing “Two hours vs. eight hours changes drive time, but not parental influence.” 9. Offer Hybrid Narratives “Close enough to come home, far enough to grow.” 10. Introduce Social Proof Highlight students who came from similar distances. 11. Use Future-Pacing “Picture move-in day. What would make you feel confident?” 12. Separate Parent vs. Student Concerns Often the student wants distance; the parent fears it — or vice versa. Address them individually. Decisions stall when emotional motivations conflict. 13. Leverage Identity Framing “Are you the type of student who thrives in new environments?” 14. Introduce Strategic Independence For “too close” concerns: “You can be nearby without living at home.” 15. Quantify Access Flights per day. Drive time. Weekend options. Travel cost averages. 16. Create a Trial Frame “Let’s treat the first semester as a pilot.” 17. Re-anchor to Fit “Is distance outweighing academic fit?” 18. Acknowledge Emotional Attachment Without Reinforcing It “It’s natural to want to keep family close.” 19. Use the Scarcity Principle Carefully If applicable: “Opportunities like this aren’t always geographically convenient.” 20. Close With Ownership “Ultimately, this decision belongs to you. Our role is to make sure distance doesn’t overshadow fit.” - - - - - Questions about the show, or how we work with college admissions departments across the country? Conversation Strategies for the Introverted Admissions Counselor

Calling all introverts, this episode of the Monday Morning Admissions podcast is for you! Lots of thoughtful, intelligent people are drawn to work in a college admissions department. And many of those people would classify themselves as more introverted than extroverted. Phone calls, personal interactions, and the process of 'closing' a prospect's commitment are the most challenging parts of the job. Today, we go over proven approaches that will fit the more introverted style of that personality, and create a system that allows them to be successful. The Growing Importance of Differentiation in the College Admissions Process

How much do you emphasize how your campus, your degree and the future benefits of a student coming to your campus is different than their other options? It's a critical question, because according to our research, it's turning out to be one of the major checklist items this generation of prospects are focusing on as they whittle down their choices and end up choosing a college or university for the next step in their life. This episode focuses on the 'why' behind this trend, as well as practical tips for admissions counselors on how to start that part of their conversations with this class of prospects already involved in the decision making process. Ed Wright on Building Consistent Admissions Success

Ed Wright is leaving his post as Vice President of Enrollment Management at Lebanon Valley College, and on today's episode, he'll talk about why (and how) his team has been so successful in building consistency and success in reaching their admissions goals year after year. What makes his story unique? LVC doesn't have a lot of things stacked in it's favor when it comes to achieving consistent enrollment success: It's a rural campus, in a small college town, with not a lot around campus that would be considered big draws for students all across the country. And yet, they have enjoyed consistent success under Wright's leadership. He'll walk us through how that has been happening, and what other admissions leaders can do to approach their task of landing healthy admissions classes. Should the College Admissions World Be Scared of AI?

AI is coming to your college admissions world. Are you ready? More importantly, should you be scared of it? So today, we wanted to take a little bit of a deep dive into the topic of the evolving influence of AI in college admissions. The Problem With Waiting for Fresh Donuts - and Your Admissions Process

How long would you wait for hot, fresh, delicious donuts? Would you wait for 45 minutes? I did, recently. And to be honest, I'm not sure it was worth it. How long would your prospective students wait for the admissions decisions, and your admissions process, to play out? According to the research, not as long as you need them to. On this episode of Monday Morning Admissions, we talk about four major stumbling blocks that causes delays in your process, and what your prospects need from you in order to keep on being patient and waiting for it all to play out. Why is this important? Because more and more, prospects are gravitating to schools with smooth, well-communicated steps that lead to faster decisions...and that is hurting campuses, admissions staffs, and the counselors who are talking to prospects directly when it comes to their net results at the end of the year. How can you change it? What do your prospects want to hear from you about as they go through the process? We answer four key areas of concern, and give you ideas on what you need to do next. To contact us, email the host [email protected] or our admissions team at [email protected] And, don't forget to check in regularly for new training and information at MondayMorningAdmissions.com. On today's episode, former college coach and administrator Hillary London shares what she has learned after retiring from higher education and starting work as a financial advisor. Is a Scandal Brewing Around College Admissions Essays?

On this episode, we talk to Allen Koh, founder of Cardinal Education, one of the country's leading advisory services for parents and students seeking admission into elite U.S. universities and colleges. Koh is echoing a trend that he says should be a growing concern for our higher education system: The deprioritization of, and even complete disregard for, college admissions essays. Once the building block for defining the fit of the prospective student on a campus, it's now becoming a thing of the past - and Koh believes that's going to be bad for the colleges ...and the country. Six Topics the Parents of YOUR Prospects Want to Talk About

One of the most challenging topics we try to train admissions teams to master in the on-campus training workshops we lead is conversations with parents of their prospective students. For most college admissions counselors, parents are intimidating. They ask different questions than students do, and it’s harder to make an effective connection with them. Today, we go over six areas of conversation that not only will raise your profile with the parents of prospects, but also achieve key gains in the relationship you’re fostering - and, improve their view towards you and your campus as they help their son or daughter make this difficult life decision. What the Deeper Look Inside the Viability of College Reveals

As we all know, there is a growing worry in HigherEd when it comes to the topic of the long term plan to keep college education relevant, affordable, and ongoing. At the heart of that worry is this: There are too many colleges for the number of available students, which isn't a good precursor for an ongoing business model. One individual keeping track of this trend is Gary Stocker. His website and podcast at CollegeViability.com tracks the financial health of colleges and universities, and creates an open statistical and financial record for the public - including the future students and families you recruit - to understand if the college they're looking into is healthy or not. Predictably, this has cause some in the Enrollment Management and campus leadership space to get upset with his work. We think it should prompt serious questions, along with intelligent answers, to help fix this problem and help transform the crisis into workable solutions. So, what are the major issues that you need to be aware of? What does the future of higher education in the United States look like? And, what can you and your admissions department do to change course towards stability and profitability, if that happens to be on your to-do list where you work? Find out on this episode of the Monday Morning Admissions podcast. For more on our guest, visit CollegeViability.com, and subscribe to the College Viability channel on YouTube, or listen to his podcast.
