The tearful hero Aftab works well, copying Shah Rukh Khan's tearful hero in most of his movies, right down to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai's Rahul. Now I must say everyone did a great job; Anita, Aftab, everyone was superb, even the cameos from "Sasha" and other K serial regulars (well even Anita is a K serial regular); but where the plot lacked was its sequence, direction and editing.

LAST TIME : But lyrical vulnerability isn’t enough to lift the dreary cloud of Giveon’s static vocal performance that hangs over the album like a TV show that should’ve ended three seasons ago.  The dull midtempo rhythms and runny guitar lines are equally uninteresting. Give or Take is stacked with songs that add minimal variation in cadence and tone that make his honest musings on love sound unconvincing.  The Giveon of Take Time experimented with melody and challenged himself vocally; Give or Take stunts that growth in favor of secluding himself in his comfort zone.

As usual, the experts are confident in their matches, but as MAFS fans know, high hopes for romance can quickly be dashed once couples meet in person. When dealing with an angry person, it can be easy to let ourselves get agitated and respond with anger or an upset tone. But remaining calm, looking for solutions, and setting boundaries can help manage the other person’s anger — rather than fuel it.

There are several ways you can tell that someone is experiencing anger or aggression. They may express their feelings physically or show it in how they act — or react.

It’s natural to feel angry sometimes. Many of us have developed strategies for working through anger when it creeps up. We know what may irk us and what works best to calm ourselves down. But when we find ourselves face-to-face with someone else’s anger, how to act becomes less clear. What are we supposed to do?

Black keeps us focused on one particular location, Hell Creek, in Montana, with bits at the ends of every chapter commenting on things going on in other, far-away parts of the world, showing that this change was global. When the impact devastates the entire planet, it makes much less sense to think of the specific landing spot as ground zero. It makes more sense to see it as a planet-wide event, which would make the entire Earth, Planet Zero. It was not the first major planetary extinction, or even the second. Tanis in North Dakota was the northern end of the seaway where the catastrophic events occurred.

Notably, it takes a narrative turn with several vignettes on the dinosaurs, mammals, birds, and other creatures that made their way through the asteroid impact (or...you know... not). This makes it more captivating and fun to read in the same way as Sam Kean's books or other more engaging science authors.

This was a really interesting book detailing before and after the asteroid hit. The first third of the book paints a picture of Hell Creek in the days preceding the asteroid impact, while the remaining chapters detail the aftermath (one hour after impact, one year after impact, and so forth into a million years). While the main focus is on Hell Creek, each chapter also contains a section on a different area of the planet, showing the aftermath on a global scale.

Christmas movies should be fun, especially if they are advertised as rom-coms. This was not. NONE of the main characters had any redeeming qualities. Zero. Nowadays we look around us at the well-oiled machinery of our advanced technological age and fondly muse that our society is as stable as bedrock. It is not. It is in fact a mad mishmash of individual fears, sacred cows, crazy desires - and a deep underlying sense of insecurity. The rock-solid state used to be the th century's secular TOTEM, for it was the symbolic appeasement of aporetic oedipal rage in a symbol - to Hegel as his many followers. Then radical opposition to this centrality arose through Marx, and the modern bifurcation of politics, which has been totalized in postmodernity, first arose. Why? Because religion was no longer the foundation of the state. As Freud says, we neurotics NEED a Totem, but that Totem was being politically dismantled. An Unbearable Lightness of Being was being born. The mad mishmash is our inheritance. And so we no longer have a secure substitute for our parents' love - our childhood Totem - which our inner Oedipus has cut out of our lives. So we hide the Bugaboo - that’s the sum of our fears, our taboo - safely in the symbol of a Totem: our books, our TV & our Films. My own Oedipus took up his parricidal arms against the taboo when I was twenty. An overly affective type of kid, I had never really left my feathered parental nest. My inner Oedipus cut those ties, but they never stopped bleeding. Until I read Judith Viorst's Necessary Losses. The myth of uniformly happy family ties MUST die, a necessary loss. Without wings we can't fly. But back then I chose the false comfort of a Totem of icy alienation, like so many others. An invalid substitute for rage, because it too kills our SOULS. And reality gives us wings ONLY if we have a valid Totem to substitute for the Taboo of finding liberation from the myth of the nuclear family. You see, severing himself like that is Oedipus' undoing. As with the alienated. But it doesn't have to be like that. Isaiah's suffering Servant was someone I could identify with - and He is THE traditionally valid Totem. The Totem Freud couldn't accept. When we hate, we are killing Him. And so eventually, it is OURSELVES we are killing with our primitive rage. That happened to me, eventually, believe it or not! You see, I have managed to kill my own high opinion of myself with that same rage, and recover my inner humanity. As in the great new book Love and Rage, I had to USE my anger as a means toward the end of attaining tranquility. So I did. At the end of my road my heart is clear of spiderwebs - and happy. The thunderheads of my rage are dissipating in a new sunrise. For Freud was wrong. A true Totem is STILL viable, because it brings peace. And God is the Totem that leads us Home to Ourselves - WITHOUT illusions.

Now the Church insisted that pacifism based on love of neighbor was acceptable.   Pius XII insisted that biological, chemical, and nuclear war are morally unacceptable under any circumstances because they do not protect civilians and do disproportionate damage, but during the Reagan administration the American bishops allowed the possession of nuclear weapons if done on an interim basis and with no intent to use.

The most prominent of these religious theories are non-violence, principled disobedience irregardless of consequences, nuclear war pacifism, just war pacifism, and programmatic pacifism.   The last seems to be the most relevant to Quakers as well as to mainline Protestants and Catholics because it builds upon the early 20 th century experience of the social gospel.   The social gospel attempted to use the power of government to build the kingdom of God on earth.   

Finally, religion has played a major role in inspiring individuals and groups working for peace.   From St. Francis to male and female Nobel Laureates – Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama and Jimmy Carter, Quakers Jane Addams and Emily Greene Balch, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma, and Rigoberte Mechu Tum of Guatemala - these and many obscure individuals working in church peace groups whose efforts do not lag in spite of years of discouragement show the strong correlation of religious devotion and work for peace.   There are also religious and secular peace organizations throughout the world:   Roman Catholic, Sant Egido, Jewish, Peace Now in Israel,   Buddhist, Savrodaya in Thailand and Sri Lanka, the originally Christian, Fellowship of Reconciliation and secular, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, War Resisters League.   Roman Catholic and Protestant missionary work has for years sought better living conditions through education and health care, and major denominations have lobbies in Washington.   The evangelical churches that often seek to avoid direct political contact in missionary work can have a social impact. The argument has been made that the Pentecostal revival in Latin and South America has done more to improve the status and reduce violence to women than all the international conferences.    Like you, when I look at recent American foreign policy and elections, I despair.   When we look at the response of the world to America’s second Gulf War and the work of a plethora of NGOs – religious and secular, there are, if not many, grounds for hope, reasons for action.

    They bring moral perspectives to bear upon the causes and conduct of a war. Religious leaders must have sufficient autonomy so that they are free to speak out in opposition to the state and a war.
