From Floodwaters to Flourishing: Jayne on Creativity and Mental Health

On this episode of the Roundtable Wellness podcase, I interviewed Jayne, a marketing professional at the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, about how creativity has impacted her mental health, particularly following the devastating July 4th flood in Kerr County that killed many people and caused widespread destruction. Jayne shared how she rediscovered the importance of creativity through making handmade thank you cards for colleagues and partners, especially after receiving guidance from Marissa at Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute about using creativity to enrich mental health during stressful times. She explained how creating personalized cards not only boosted the recipients' day but also provided her with a mental health benefit and perspective shift, describing it as a "boomerang" effect where giving encouragement lifted both the giver and receiver. Jayne also discussed how the Community Foundation has distributed over $150 million in flood relief funds and continues to support mental health services for survivors through their RebuildKerr.org website, emphasizing that the recovery efforts will continue for years to come.
