Episode 34 - What even is time? John Dies at the End...

We recorded this episode in January but after watching 'John Dies At The End' the real question is "what is time?" If you ask Robert Marley (drug dealer in this movie not related to famous singer Bob) then he will tell you that time is an ocean, and so we're just going to go with it. This one was a ride, and even if you listen to this very spoilery episode you can probably still go in and be surprised and walk out simultaneously knowing more and less than you do now.  We loved it, it is a ride.  On recommendation from faithful listener and older brother Marco after listening to our paradox science episode we should have guessed where this was going.  We ramble on about time and space, multiverses, reality and try to figure out this glorious, profound and absolutely ridiculous movie.  If we're honest it's best you go in blind and experience it for yourself and then join our insane mutterings about the universe. Episode 33 - Studio Ghibli Saving Throw - Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

After being away for a little bit thanks to both of us moving house in January we are back with a bang.  This week we chat about the first (unofficial) Studio Ghibli film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, made just one year before the creation of the infamous studio itself.  This one blew us away again, the characters, the story, the design and the haunting melodies setting the stage for what is to come in the years that follow.  But fear not its not just nerding out about Ghibli, we throw in a few classic tangents; who's been watching Wandavision, moving house, movie set etiquette, and a great story about Hayao "No Cuts" Miyazaki.  Now that we're settled in our new homes we have so many exciting things to chat about and share with you all, so thanks for sticking around. Episode 32 - Studio Ghibli Saving Throw - Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Or first episode and first Studio Ghibli Saving Throw of 2021.  Listen to our thoughts on the first official Studio Ghibli film Castle in the Sky, the influence this film had on the company and Japanese animation that came after and the nostalgia factor of older animated films.  We go down a nerdy rabbit hole of the dub vs sub conversation, translation theory and the influence actors have on the film through their interpretation of script and visuals.  Stick with us long enough and you will be able to witness our decent into madness as we prove we are terrible time travellers who were in desperate need of a holiday.   Lets make 2021 awesome Remember, JUST CARE! Episode 31 - Creepy Christmas Corner

This was meant to be out last episode of 2020 but here you go, better late than never.  We dug deep and found some of the craziest Christmas horror movies and believe me we only scratched the surface.  We found zombies, serial killers, mutated snowmen, Krampus, devils and hunters.  Good, bad, so bad it was good and just plain ridiculous, hopefully we can add something fun to your next Christmas list.  Hope your holidays were merry and here's to an new year of podcasting and talking shit, we have high hopes for 2021 so stick with us and the least we can do is make you smile. Episode 30 - The Promised Neverland Season 1

For our second last episode of the year we decided to watch the first season of this awesome anime, The Promised Neverland.  We try to do a spoiler free review in the beginning but be warned after that we will go into full spoiler breakdown of characters, storylines and theories of what is to come when season 2 drops in 2021.  Our brains were blown and went to some dark places in our theorising, Who's really evil? Whats beyond the wall? What would you do?...   We get all our tangents done in the beginning.  Lots of talk over the Marvel and Disney announcements, shows we are excited to see and what we think we'll be blessed with in 2021 to make our nerdy hearts happy. Episode 29 - Music that made us

This episode we decided to take a walk down memory lane and talk about the music we grew up on, the first albums we bought, the songs that inspired us and spoke to us through our emo punk rock days, things that have changed and stayed the same, and the music we still listen to on repeat to make us smile.  There's a few tangents like Jared's live performing horror story and Toni's worst injuries.  Special shout out to long time listener and brother of Toni who has started his own Youtube channel called LostViking where he reviews and plays though games, go have a look and spread the love.   Stay safe and stay connected Instagram: @nerdstuffwithslytherpuff Twitter: @nerdstuffwithSP . . . Episode 27 - BIRTHDAY SELECTION #2 - Our existential crisis

Round two of our birthday month extravaganza!!!  This week Jared got to chose our topic and decided to drop us into the wormhole of science and reality with a collection of paradoxes and theories to make your brain melt.  Are we alone?  Do we really want to know if we're in a simulation? or are we all immortal versions in a multiverse....   The tangents are strong, time travel, anime, horror movies that get too close to reality and the most dangerous paradox to mention... Roko's Basilisk.  But fear not, we are all miracles of nature, a unique shuffle in a deck of 52 cards.  Science is cool and nerds are the future. Episode 26 - BIRTHDAY SELECTION - Not throwing away my shot!

November is the blessed month when both of the Slytherpuff team were born, so to celebrate we decided to let each of us chose a speciality subject.  Homework was provided by the nominee and an absolute ball was had by each of us diving in to relatively unknown territory.  The first of our Birthday selections will come as absolutely no surprise, Toni selected Musical Theatre, her first love and nerdy passion.  We chose a nice variety of musicals to introduce Jared into the fold, from your classics to the latests hits and everything in-between.  Yup this is a long one but we couldn't leave a show tune behind.  Stick with us no matter you musical tastes and hopefully we can inspire you to give a new show a go or if you're on the same crazy train as Toni, sit back and join us in gushing over some greats. Episode 25 - Studio Ghibli Saving Throw - Tales From Earthsea

For our fifth venture into the world of Studio Ghibli we take a look at the lowest rated film from the studio.  We gave it a chance and discussed the things we loved as well as its faults.  It's a beautiful film and definitely inspired us to want to read the books they were based on because we could see the potential in the characters and the story, have a listen to hear what we really though about this awesome addition to the Ghibli archives.  As always tangents include accepting our alien overlords, how there should be no politics just anime, Violet Evergarden and war veterans, and anime as a psychological study. Episode 24 - JJ Abrams is Cloverfield, the Paradox

This week we decided to change things up for our spooky October specials and go back to the Cloverfied trilogy, an awesome selection of three different types of scares.  We break down each film, talking actors, filming styles, genre and throw around our theories within the Cloverfield universe.  As always there are tangents about things like sports, film theory and a cool Call of Duty Fan Short where you'll get to see Toni kicking some ass. For spooky Halloween we decided to rewatch all 5 of the Final Destination movies.  Stirring up some old fears, making some new ones and reliving our youth of early 2000 scary stories and picking our favourite deaths of the franchise.  Tangents include 3D - is it worth it?, life as a pale kid and Toni having a mini breakdown due to one of these gems... have a listen to find out. Episode 22 - Scarred for life

Welcome to spooky October, this month is all about the scares so we decided to start with the things that have stuck with us and scarred us for life, whether it be things we watched way too young or were not emotionally prepared for or even the ones that spoke to our own personal irrational fears.  Some you will recognise and some make absolutely no sense.  Share your horror moments with us, we're always on the lookout for a challenge.   Special shoutout to South Africa's very own Horror Fest happening online the 28th October to the 13th November 2020.  Make sure to give them a follow on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube and keep up with latest schedules and releases on their website at http://www.horrorfest.info they have some great screenings planned for you no matter where you are in the world. Episode 21 - Studio Ghibli Saving Throw - Ponyo

This week we watched the super cute Studio Ghibli movie Ponyo.  This one is definitely aimed more at kids but has so many facets that can be enjoyed for all ages.  We talk about the things we loved, the hand drawn animation skills, the voices that amazed us and even raised some controversy on how Ponyo can maybe seem a little annoying if you are a bit tired when watching (sorry).  Some fun tangents about coffee and the drama around getting a drivers license.  A fun session all around. Episode 20 - What we loved about Comic Con Africa 2020

As promised we did our best to watch as many of the live streams as we could over the 4 day event that was Comic Con Africa Online.  We gush about the people we were excited to see, from voice actors to Power Rangers and then share our new found love and appreciation for the things we didn't know much about going in like the cosplayers, cartoonists, illustrators and creators, appreciating the works we know and love while also being introduced to new and exciting creators.  This whole weekend really allowed us to appreciate the nerd culture of South Africa, we are so excited about the local creators who are standing alongside the international greats and cannot wait for next year when we can finally attend Comic Con Africa together in person. Check out our Instagram page where we'll be shouting out to some of the creators we loved and don't forget to follow Comic Con Africa on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Twitch to see some of the panels that you may have missed.  Celebrate your fellow nerds with us. Episode 19 - Comic Con Africa is going online !!!

In this episode we start with some great tangents, mostly around the lowering of Covid restrictions coming to South Africa, looking forward to going to movies again, hanging out with friends, grabbing a coffee and the hopeful eventuality of returning to film sets #setlife.  But then we get to the main event and that is the fact that Comic Con Africa is happening this weekend and there are so many things we are looking forward to.  Power Rangers, YouTubers, WWE, Tabletop Gaming, voice actors who made our childhood and all the illustrators and artists we get to discover along the way.  Basically it's a nostalgia nerd fest and we are here fo it.  Stay safe and stay connected Instagram: @nerdstuffwithslytherpuff Twitter: @nerdstuffwithSP . . . Episode 18 - South Korean Horror Cinema

This week we decided to dive into the South Korean Film industry and especially the great horror movies coming out of the country.  From the better known titles like The Wailing and the Vengeance Trilogy to some smaller hidden gems we found.  There are some fascinating realisations on the history and growth of South Korean Cinema and a lot of love for the versatile and talented directors and actors.  Many tangents include, foreign films in general, our first introductions to subtitles, good Afrikaans movies and Toni's love for actress Anna-Mart van der Merwe, random Sundance Festival facts and the horror of the new Cats movie.  Also a definite tangent shoutout to YouTuber Amanda The Jedi, some great reviews and reaction videos with some hilarious rants. Episode 17 - Studio Ghibli Saving Throw - Only Yesterday

Our third instalment of the Studio Ghibli Saving Throw series is here and this time we watched Only Yesterday.  We look into this pastoral nostalgic slow burn and talk about how it made us miss a traditional life that we would never have been able to experience.  There are are still many laughs, Toni's flashbacks of her own anxiety ridden childhood, an appreciation of music and a tangent flow chart that even we couldn't understand, mathematics > taxes > music > time signatures > musical theatre.  Yup we're slowly introducing Jared to the joys of obscure musicals.  Stick to the end to hear what we rolled for next. Episode 16 - Super Slytherpuffs Save The Day

aka "Do you even tangent bro?" We are here for all the superhero glory that is coming to your screens.  What started as a simple conversation about favourite superhero's and superpowers got railroaded by an awesome exodus of new trailers for some upcoming superhero movies.  We start with an existential crisis of what makes a superhero, discussed some trailers, brought up some of our superhero movie problems and this time we dug so hard into our tangent souls that we ended by discussing the differences between comedy and drama actors, the state of the film industry, Hallmark movie formulas,  the difficulties of learning a second language and why English is hard...  It's a special one.  We laughed, we joked, we tried to sound intelligent but most importantly we had fun and we hope you do to. Episode 15 - She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

No surprise here, we absolutely love this show.  SPOILERS for season one, we gush about all the things that we absolutely love about this show.  This is demonstrated by a serious shortage of Tangents although there is an in-depth chat and love for Brain W.Fosters interview series Between the Sheets on the Critical Role Twitch and Youtube channel (Toni says you have to watch them all) but that stemmed from his interview with She-Ra show runner Noelle Stevenson who is an absolute goddess.  We chat about the aspects that stood out for us in this show including animation style and a kick-ass soundtrack but really dove into the heart of the show, representation and a real lesson in empathy and acceptance.  What makes a person strong, what does leadership or friendship mean and how love is love is love is love.  Shit got deep in there.   Give it a watch and let us know what you thought. Episode 14 - I vant to drink your blooooood!

Vampires are the name of the game and let us warn you now, Toni went full nerd on this one.  Although there are some Tangents like how to cope with being stuck in one place by moving all your furniture around and investing in power tools (we desperately need to travel soon) this episode definitely stays a bit more on track because there are just so many awesome vampire films, tv shows and fun facts, we barely scratched the surface.  We look at our first introductions to vampires (we were too young) discover a shocking truth about Jared and his partial Buffy blind spot, gush over Mel Brooks, music and old books, share some of our favourite foreign vampires, animated vampires, indie vampires and new and interesting origin vampires.  We talk everything from your high brow art film options to the ultimate vampire film trash and everything in between, and we love it all.   Special shout out to the South African Horror Festival happening this October check out their website www.horrorfest.info for more info Stay safe and stay connected Instagram: @nerdstuffwithslytherpuff Twitter: @nerdstuffwithSP . . . Episode 13 - Studio Ghibli Saving Throw - The Wind Rises

Our second #StudioGhibliSavingThrow took us to the more recent gem The Wind Rises.  With a more serious tone The Wind Rises tells the fictional biography of aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi and his career and life in Japan during some monumental events in history including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression and World War 2.  We talk about all the things we loved about it, the music and sound design, the portrayal of the characters, and the tough contrast between love and passion and the harsh realities of those times in Japan.  It's a powerful look into grief, loss and acceptance and skirts the line between dark and light so beautiful, allowing a younger generation access to some really complex concepts and emotions.  Fear not, we tangent... crazy stories about donating blood, how weird sports are now because of Covid, fascinating insights into translations and dubbing adaptations, some unsubtle hints at next weeks topic and we roll for our next Ghibli, stick around to find out so you can watch with us and join in the conversation. Episode 12 - Go play outside

This week is all about the games we played as kids, the ones that gave us square eyeballs and a few nightmares (sorry mom).  We talk about our first PC games, renting Playstations from Blockbusters and our desperate need for Nintendo Switches.  The tangents weren't as bad but we do worry about Toni's serial killer handwriting, Jared's small but totally in control addiction to guitars and far too many references to Viva La Dirt League sketches... (thats a lie, no such thing as too many, we're obsessed).   Remember next week is our second ever Studio Ghibli Saving Throw, where we will be chatting about The Wind Rises, give it a watch and join the conversation. Episode 11 - The (not) good, the bad and the ugly

This week we chatted about notoriously "bad" movies that we still love.  There are some gems, some controversy and a magical collection of tangents.  Alongside terrible shark movies and nostalgia tangents we talk construction, Blockbusters VHS rentals, movie ratings history, special effects and digital effects and the power of a strategic colour pallet.  In conclusion we like movies and will always try to find the good in any form of entertainment.  Love what you love.... and go watch Hamilton. Special shoutout to fellow podcasters Tangent Versus and epic Youtube creators Horrible Reviews and Corridor Crew.  Their channels helped our tangents flourish. Episode 10 - Studio Ghibli Saving Throw - Pom Poko

This week is our first episode for our new monthly series "Studio Ghibli Saving Throw", where we roll a dice to decide on a Ghibli movie to watch and then ramble on about it, so spoiler alert throughout.  This week we talk about the 1994 classic Pom Poko, a tale of a clan of shape shifting racoon-dogs (tanuki) and their battle with the urban and commercial development of Tokyo.  It is cute and funny but has a powerful message underneath and we enjoyed every minute in both languages.  As per usual there are still your classic tangents, we talk about the evolution of translation and anime dubbing, plan an epic road trip and realise that we are all just tired shape shifting racoons. Stay tuned to the end to hear us roll for the next Ghibli !!! Stay safe and stay connected Instagram: @nerdstuffwithslytherpuff Twitter: @nerdstuffwithSP . . . Episode 9 - Natural 1 on that history check

This week we focus on our failings as nerds, the things we feel we should probably know more about but don't.  Some might surprise you, some might enrage you and some might make you go "oh thank God it's not just me".  What this really does is just give us an awesome list of things we still get to experience for the first time, so who are the real winners here.  Tangents about our home towns, family, copyright friendly superhero games, horror novels, and a slow decent into madness as we realise we're too tired to speak English but damn did we laugh. Don't let anyone ever tell you that your nerdy passions will get you nowhere, just take a look at us... well...um...  We take a look at the nerdy things that helped inspire us to be the people we are today, pointed us towards the things we love and also helped fill our minds with completely random and questionable useful information.  I mean, Jared can do a mean crossword and Toni now plays the ukulele so that's a win for us.  Tangents are great, musical theatre, Scandinavian metal music, sports, the Hout Bay Market in Cape Town and our childhood dreams of being pulled up on stage to perform with our favourite bands or in a favourite musical.   Special announcement of our new monthly series starting in the first week of July, STUDIO GHIBLI SAVING THROW, where we roll a dice to pick a Studio Ghibli movie to talk about.  July's Ghibli will be "Pom Poko", give it a watch and join in the conversation by sharing your experience and fun facts on our socials. Youtube black holes.  You know the feeling, checking out that recommended list on the side of the screen, watching "just one more" episode of a completely random channel dedicated to orange farming  you found after five straight hours where you started just wanting to find the trick to making sourdough.  This episode we share our favourite channels that,  whether found by chance or by recommendation, all somehow pulled us into the awesome abyss that is nerdy Youtube. Obviously tangents... we try to describe South African boerewors, throw love at anime soundtracks, and start strong talking about home made cashew milk and how flasks make coffee taste funny... you know its true.  Stay safe and stay connected Instagram: @nerdstuffwithslytherpuff Twitter: @nerdstuffwithSP . . . Episode 5 - A very Potter tangent

We went into this episode thinking it would be all Harry Potter... you think we'd have learnt by now.  Skip to about 15:00 for the Potter goodness, favourite books and films in the series, Dumbledore's evolution, team Starkid and Slytherpuff love but stay for the great tangents.  This episode got deep in some places and you'll actually get to know us as humans little better, we talk coffee, coping with lockdown, classic gaming, tattoos, film industry assumptions and finding the silver lining in tough times.   Remember if you find yourself in a bad place don't be scared to reach out, thanks to the internet you are not truly alone, and if you don't feel like interacting with humans yet then hopefully podcasts like ours where friends are just talking shit can be a little bit of comfort.  Come on in and hang out with Slytherpuff, we're just a pair nerds having a chat and hoping to spread the love of random nerdy things. Episode 4 - Is this the real life? Is this just found footage?

This week we kept on topic... for at least one third of the episode.  Our first remote recording attempt while trapped in our homes we decided to chat about our favourite found footage horror movies.  There are so many we don't mention but this is really one of our most loved genres so join us for some fun facts and to nerd out about some of the best.   Obviously we run off on tangents about making our own horrors, DC and Marvel, creating extended universes, one of the many reasons we love the Joker movie, South African accents in movies, and a not so subtle teaser for next week. Special shoutouts to @jobis89 an awesome bookstagramer with great horror recommendations and the ever talented Troy Baker who is currently keeping creatives in lockdown inspired and grounded through his Instastories @officialtroybaker in these crazy lockdown times. yup Zombies!  This week we chat about our favourite zombie movies and ask the age old question "would we actually survive a Zombie apocalypse?"   BUT we would not be true to ourselves if our conversations didn't go off on many an unrelated tangent so also included in this episode is: favourite vinyls, Game of Thrones, Korean cinema, why Toni would lose Survivor, Hindi soap update, epic 90's movie soundtracks, learning to juggle, time travel, Disney conspiracy theories.... and much more. Most importantly, in this time remember to be kind to one another, practice compassion and above all don't be a dick. Episode 1 - Making friends with the voices in your head

This is it.  This is what happens when you give two nerds microphones with no supervision.  But on the bright side we had a laugh and there's no turning back now.   Welcome to Episode 1, the one where we talk about who we are and what we do.  Expect many tangents about the world of voice acting and dubbing, an unhealthy appreciation of Hindi soap operas and the important distinction between the Power Rangers alert and Kim Possible's beeper tone...  Instagram: @nerdstuffwithslytherpuff  Twitter: @nerdstuffwithSP . . .
