Action Ready is a local volunteer run collective that organises legal observation at protests as well as important community education about the rights of protestors in Queensland. Alani highlighted the role of legal observation and educating the community about their legal rights. We discussed recent ongoing protest actions & the concerning pattern of overpolicing of Palestinian solidarity protests and the introduction of more invasive search powers. in public spaces who can be targeted or profiled with increased police presence. A key takeaway is there is a right to film in public, including police interactions. Finally we also talked about police interactions with disabled protestors and disproportionate harm to them, that legal observers have reported on.

Last week, we heard from Evie Gardener (PhD candidate) and Kalpana Prasad (dancer & dance teacher) about Fat Joy festival; exploring aspects of body positivity and highlighting weight stigma. As Evie’s research explores in particular weight stigma in public health, we discussed the prevalence of poor outcomes due to misconceptions about fatness as well as discrimination faced by fat people seeking healthcare. Her research explores encouraging positive health behaviours as opposed to interventions that are only oriented toward weight loss. We also talked about access for people in larger bodies in creative spheres with Kalpana, such as dance, representation and inclusion. Access is expansive, and Evie highlighted barriers like costumes that might deter fat people from participating as opposed to any perceived lack of interest or capability

We discuss NDIS reforms, including concerns around registration of support workers, also issues around housing - young people with disability being relegated to aged care facilities and the harmful reality of group homes, perspectives coming from Sam's own lived experiences. We hear an excerpt from Sam’s book “The Slow Violence Cookbook” and explore the importance of COVID precautions; in light of the forgotten ongoing rate of deaths. Finally we touch on the struggles and vulnerability of people with disability who resist through protest.
