Beyond the clinic: career journeys and professional fulfilment in osteopathy
Osteopath Kale Mazurek reached a turning point after a decade in practice, when the physical demands of hands‑on work began to take a toll. With long‑term career sustainability and family life front of mind, he started exploring roles beyond the treatment room. That search led him to a new professional direction where he could continue drawing on his osteopathic training in a different way. In this conversation, Heath Williams speaks with Kale about the transition he made, what prompted it, and why osteopaths are uniquely positioned to move into a wide range of non‑clinical roles thanks to their strong transferable skills. Kale describes the path he followed beyond the clinic and how core osteopathic capabilities—critical thinking, adaptability, time management, and stakeholder communication—helped him thrive in a government position. Their discussion also highlights the breadth of opportunities available to osteopaths, including policy, support coordination, occupational rehabilitation, claims management, injury prevention, and corporate wellbeing. With the research article (Trends in retention and attrition among osteopaths in Australia, 2025*) showing declining early‑career retention, this episode offers a timely reminder that osteopaths have diverse and meaningful career options both within and beyond clinical practice. *Lathlean T, Orrock P, Malon R, Barclay L, McNamara T, Tan J, Divakar R, Woodward C, Saar E. The mastitis evidence pathway: osteopathic clinical insight to case series
It took a chance listening encounter for clinician scientist and osteopath Roger Engel to hear Elise Fuller and Katie Willy speaking on a webinar about lactation and mastitis. At the time, what Elise and Katie didn’t realise was that they were sitting on a wealth of clinical data, and it was the data which caught Roger’s attention. Following the webinar, Roger contacted Katie and with Elise on board, the three of them started down their path of research and as they say, the rest is history. Hear someone who knows a thing or two about a case series, Michael Fleischmann, chat with Elise, Katie and Roger on the journey they took to having their case series, Osteopathic intervention for inflammatory conditions of the lactating breast: a case series, published in the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine. This conversation stands as an inspiration to any osteopath wanting to turn the wealth of knowledge they gain in clinic into meaningful research that can help shape the profession. A philanthropic grant, that was administered by Southern Cross University, helped make this research possible. Engel, R., Willy, K., & Fuller, E. (2025). Vascular considerations in osteopathic practice
In this episode, Prue Eddie and Michael Solano, who are both faculty of the Rule of the Artery Program for the Australian Research College of Osteopathic Medicine (aka ARCOM), delve into the enduring wisdom of Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, unpacking one of his foundational insights that “the rule of the artery is supreme.” Guided by host and fellow osteopath, Sonia Wainberg, the conversation explores how osteopathic principles support the body’s innate ability to self-regulate when blood and lymphatic flow are unobstructed and cellular vitality can thrive. With a recognition that injuries and chronic conditions are deeply influenced by vascular health and an understanding that “the veins are the drains” is more than a metaphor, Prue and Michael offer a rich perspective on how manual therapy intersects with the body’s circulatory function and that without proper drainage, tissues may not be nourished, repaired, or restored. Neurogenic movement, a trauma informed TRE approach
TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) isn’t just about easing tension. It’s also about reorganising it. At times, the aim is to awaken dormant muscles and restore their natural function. In this episode of Osteo Talk, respected stalwart of the osteopathic community, Dr Denise Cornall (Osteopath) joins physiotherapist and TRE certification trainer Richmond Heath to explore how TRE serves as a powerful approach to reactivating and fine-tuning the body’s natural responses, meeting a spectrum of physical needs. As a global leader in trauma-informed applications of TRE and neurogenic movement, Richmond explains how the core of TRE lies in spontaneous shaking, often mistaken for anxiety or unease, which is, in fact, a natural and restorative response to stress and trauma. This natural response to stress or trauma is brought to life with Denise’s personal account of the devastation endured by the bushfire-ravaged Kinglake community. Her experience highlights how TRE fosters a vital shift in perspective: recognising these physical responses not as vulnerabilities, but as pathways to healing and reintegration. In the lead up to PTSD Awareness Day on 27 June, you will have an opportunity to experience TRE and the trauma-informed use of spontaneous movement & self-organising motion technique for yourself through a guided interactive webinar with Richmond and Denise.
