Our Scars Speak

This platform provides a space for women and men who are breast cancer survivors and thrivers who desire to allow their mental and physical scars to speak openly about life before breast cancer, during, and now. Additionally, we are inviting caregivers to share their experience with supporting and loving their loved one(s) through this process because they have scars that must be respected and heard. Lastly, we are hearing from professionals about their journey to serving individuals with breast cancer, along with needed information to bring forth awareness.

    Crystal Leach is a breast cancer survivor, a passionate patient advocate, a CHEK2 carrier, and a proud flattie. She has dedicated herself to peer support with Sharsheret and shares her journey of resilience through life’s challenges. Crystal’s story is rooted in a past filled with struggles. Her biological mother faced significant challenges, leading to the placement of her children in foster care. At just 17, Crystal found herself pregnant and alone. Yet, through it all, her unwavering love and faith in God provided her with grace, clarity, and guidance. Hearing her breast cancer diagnosis was devastating, but her past battles had prepared her for this fight. She recognized it as another challenge to confront, equipped with the lessons learned from previous struggles. With the unwavering support of family and friends, Crystal made difficult decisions that brought her peace. Now, she feels a deep urgency to share her story, helping others navigate their own journeys.     Jennifer Thomas is a Breast and Uterine Cancer Survivor, Advocate, Single Mother, and Deputy Case Management Coordinator with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She is also the Here for The Girls, Inc. 2020 Calendar Ambassador for the month of July. Jennifer shares her story of being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at the age of 38 while going through a divorce and working in the prison system. With the support of her family and friends, she faced the disease as a single mother working a full-time job. Jennifer also explains that she is among the 2% of patients who developed uterine cancer from tamoxifen. Despite facing cancer twice, she has become more resilient, seeks the positive in all things, and continues to allow herself to evolve. Additionally, we are inviting caregivers to share their experience with supporting and loving their loved one(s) through this process because they have scars that must be respected and heard. Lastly, we are hearing from professionals about their journey to serving individuals with breast cancer, along with needed information to bring forth awareness.
