Second episode, special tribute to Sugar Minott who passed way on July 10th 2010. Rip Dancehall Lovers Roots King!

Lincoln Barrington "Sugar" Minott (May 25, 1956 – July 10, 2010) is a very special person in the history of reggae music. He will always be remembered, loved and honoured for his contributions and creations. Sugar Minott came out of the reggae scene as a sound operator and selector, making his way into music as a singer through Clement 'Coxsonne' Dodd and the legendary Studio 1 Label. Minott was a bridging artists, a person who kept the vital Studio 1 Riddims alive from first generation artists such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe and Dennis Brown. Realising early on that he had to set up his own foundation, Minott established the Black Roots label and community based music group Youthman Promotion. He was vital in propelling careers of artists such as Junior Reid and Tenor Saw. In 1981 Sugar Minott had a crossover hit with a cover of The Jackson 5's "Good Thing Going". It was such a good cover that most people thought it was an original. Memories of a charismatic Minott on Top of The Pops, skanking and singing sweetly are so special. Sugar Minott had many hits, lovers rock as well as sufferer's choice roots music. 'Vanity' 'Hard Time Pressure' 'Lovers Rock' and the legendary 'Herbman Hustling' one of the first reggae tunes to use a drum machine, paving the way for the digital revolution and the massive 'Sleng Teng' riddim. Trying to cram all this in a one hour podcast has been challenging, thats why I have chosen to do it in 2 installments. Sugar passed away on 10th July at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica's capital, Kingston. He will be dearly missed...deepest condolences to his family...'We're living a ruff old life...' RiP

The MC has a mighty brand spanking new CD called 'Stick To My Roots' nthony Henry - a.k.a. Tippa Irie - emerged from England's Saxon Sound International - the star-studded travelling sound system that has been at the forefront of the U.K. reggae dancehall scene for the past 25 years and helped launch the careers of artists such as Maxi Priest: Papa Levi and Smiley Culture. Tippa Irie was part of the new generation of British MC's who developed the 'Fast Talking' style chat which today can be heard in modern day rappers like Busta Rhymes. Tippa toured extensively with his friend and long-time sparring partner: Pato Banton: throughout the Eighties including an appearance at Jamaica's Reggae Sunsplash and their U.S. debut tours together. The U.K. DJ duo of Tippa Irie and Pato Banton had become one of the genres favourite combinations. As the Nineties began: the dynamic duo pursued their solo careers.
