The End of Trial by Jury? LIVE
This week, David Lammy, the British Justice Secretary brought to an end the right to trial by jury, a right that has existed in England since the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215, while the tradition of trial by jury goes back even further that that. Is this the thin end of the wedge? Is it being done to expedite guilty verdicts in free speech cases? Do we now live in a Lawyerocracy? To discuss all this and more we were joined by Ed West, author of the Wrong Side of History Substack, who penned this excellent piece lamenting the end of trial by jury and the glory of English law. Stick around to the end to see how Ed does in Alex’s impromptu jury-based pub quiz.Thank you Matt Jones, Lynn L, Chris Moore, Paul k, Demoocracy, and many others for tuning into my live video with Ed West! Join me for my next live video in the app.And if you haven’t subscribed to Outpost or the Wrong Side of History, it’s time you surely had. This is a public episode. The Ghosts of the Bamiyan Buddhas
Some of the most iconic sights in Afghanistan are the cliffs of Bamiyan, famous the world over for the giant Buddhas carved into the rock face. Sadly, these monumental sculptures are no longer with us, having been dynamited by the Taliban in 2001.In this deleted scene from Afghanistan, James, Marty, and Khyber visit Bamiyan, where they encounter locals—caretakers of the Buddhas—who were forced at gunpoint to destroy them. It is an extraordinary eyewitness account of one of the most brutal acts of cultural vandalism in world history.A UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 7th century, Bamiyan remains of tremendous archaeological significance despite the loss of the Buddhas, with numerous mysteries yet to be uncovered. To watch full film, subscribe to Outpost.
