Pad Leaks

Seeking to dismantle the stigma of incontinence, this padcast rethinks society from the perspective of leaking bodies. We discuss urine and feacal leakages from a whole variety of perspectives, from the micro-level of individual experiences to its macro-impacts on political economies. We explore the treatments available, and introduce folks to different continence management technologies and their markets. We discuss the future of these health technologies - and the increasing need for ecologically sustainable inventions. The padcast is part of a research project "Emergent un/sustainabilities of care: The global political economy of the adult incontinence pad", led by Dr Tiina Vaittinen and funded by the Academy of Finland and Kone Foundation.

    PAD003 What to call "it"?

In the third episode of Pad Leaks (recorded over a year ago), Tiina Vaittinen discuss with Dr Christopher Chatterton. Chris is our colleague in the Pad Project, but also a coauthor in the International Continence Society (ICS) report on the terminology for "single‐use body worn absorbent incontinence products” that was published in Neurourology and Urodynamics in 2020. In this episode, we discuss with Chris, what this report was about, and what the term "single-use body worn absorbent incontinence products" refers to. We also discuss the power of stigma in talking about continence products, and how the stigma operates differently in different contexts - and different languages.

    PAD003 What to call it?

Jakso on nauhoitettu jo yli vuosi sitten.

PAD002 As society we don't talk about poo

Faecal incontinence is a common and perhaps one of the most stigmatising health conditions. The stigma gains it's power largely from the lack of knowledge on what it is to live with faecal leakages, and how to treat and manage. Societies just don't talk anough about poo, and pooing practices. In this episode, we discuss with Dr Lesley Dibley from the University of Greenwhich, about a whole range of issues on why we need to talk more about poo, and how societies could be restructured to make life with faecal leakages easier.
