My Understanding of Albert Camus's Absurd

I wanted to share my thoughts on Camus's philosophy on the meaning of life, as a lot of what I read on my channel will share themes with this. I believe that Camus meant that freedom came from not giving in to the absurd, even if it may not include seeking the most desirable outcome.Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pallettownPaypal donate: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?business=CQ68PXMWB7G8Y&no_recurring=0&currency_code=CAD

Humans Are Determined by Baron D'Holbach, from The System of Nature

Paul Thiry, Baron d'Holbach, known as d'Holbach, was a Franco-German philosopher, encyclopedist and writer, who was a prominent figure in the French Enlightenment. He was born in Edesheim, near Landau in the Rhenish Palatinate, but lived and worked mainly in Paris, where he kept a salon. He helped in the dissemination of "Protestant and especially German thought", particularly in the field of the sciences, but was known more for his atheism and voluminous writings against religion, famously including The System of Nature (1770) and The Universal Morality (1776). Non-Being Is the Source of Being by Lao-Tzu

Laozi, formerly latinized as Laocius, was a legendary Chinese philosopher considered to be the author of the Tao Te Ching, one of the foundational texts of Taoism. Modern scholarship generally regards his biographical details as later inventions and his opus a collaboration of various writers, with the name Laozi, literally meaning 'Old Master', likely intended to portray an archaic anonymity that could converse with Confucianism. God Can Allow Some Evil by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz

A theodicy, meaning 'vindication of God', is an argument in the philosophy of religion that attempts to resolve the problem of evil, which arises when all power (omnipotence) and all goodness (omnibenevolence) are attributed to God simultaneously. Unlike a defense, which tries only to demonstrate that God and evil can logically coexist, a theodicy additionally provides a framework in which God and evil's existence are considered plausible. The German philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Leibniz coined the term theodicy in his book Théodicée (1710)... On the Soul by Aristotle

On the Soul is a major treatise written by Aristotle c. 350 BC classifying organisms' souls by their operations. In it, he alleges plants have the capacity for nourishment and reproduction, the minimum that must be possessed by any kind of living organism. Lower animals have, in addition, the powers of sense-perception and self-motion (action). Humans have all these as well as intellect. Basketball: Its Origin and Development by James Naismith

James Naismith was teaching physical education at the Young Men's Christian Association Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and felt discouraged because calisthenics and gymnastics didn't engage his students. What was needed was an indoor wintertime game that combined recreation and competition. One evening he worked out the fundamentals of a game that would quickly catch on. Two peach half-bushel baskets gave the name to the brand new sport in late 1891. Basketball: Its Origin and Development was written by the inventor himself, who was inspired purely by the joy of play. Naismith, born in northern Ontario in 1861, gave up the ministry to preach clean living through sport. He describes Duck on the Rock, a game from his Canadian childhood, the creative reasoning behind his basket game, the eventual refinement of rules and development of equipment, the spread of amateur and professional teams throughout the world, and the growth of women's basketball (at first banned to male spectators because the players wore bloomers). (Google Books)Basketball has been big part of my life, and plays a big part in Canadian culture, so it was about time that I delved into the history of the game: presented by the inventor of the game; one of the greatest Canadians in history. You can read a version of the book here: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/590be125ff7c502a07752a5b/t/5bdb9c66562fa73fc1648fc4/1541119097397/Naismith,+James,+Basket+Ball+Its+Origin+and+Development.pdfBuy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pallettownPaypal donate: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?business=CQ68PXMWB7G8Y&no_recurring=0¤cy_code=CADBuy my collection of short stories on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.ca/Pallettown-Short-Stories-collection-narrator-ebook/dp/B0FSTP6JXM/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3OG1R9CGYXKFB&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.6xZ293cESaFYNBCXIHBOmg.V8UlxWJ15a1IhzvADDBS9M95CcIM0etwiMzUZG6kgQY&dib_tag=se&keywords=pallettown+short+stories&qid=1759093780&s=digital-text&sprefix=pallettown+short+stories%2Cdigital-text%2C62&sr=1-1

"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe [Audiobook]

"The Cask of Amontillado" is a short story by the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The story, set in an unnamed Italian city at Carnival time, is about a man taking fatal revenge on a friend who, he believes, has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative follows a person being buried alive – in this case, by immurement. Reading the Epic of Gilgamesh [Audiobook]

The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic from ancient Mesopotamia. The literary history of Gilgamesh begins with five Sumerian poems about Gilgamesh (formerly read as Sumerian "Bilgames"), king of Uruk, some of which may date back to the Third Dynasty of Ur (c. 2100 BCE). These independent stories were later used as source material for a combined epic in Akkadian. The first surviving version of this combined epic, known as the "Old Babylonian" version, dates back to the 18th century BCE and is titled after its incipit, Shūtur eli sharrī ("Surpassing All Other Kings"). Only a few tablets of it have survived. The later Standard Babylonian version compiled by Sîn-lēqi-unninni dates to somewhere between the 13th to the 10th centuries BCE and bears the incipit Sha naqba īmuru ("He who Saw the Deep(s)", '"He who Sees the Unknown"'). Approximately two-thirds of this longer, twelve-tablet version have been recovered. Some of the best copies were discovered in the library ruins of the 7th-century BCE Assyrian King Ashurbanipal. *WikipediaI really enjoyed this recording, possibly one of my favourite's that I've done. Reading the Magna Carta [Audiobook]

Magna Carta (Medieval Latin for "Great Charter"), sometimes spelled Magna Charta, is a royal charter of rights agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, on 15 June 1215. First drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cardinal Stephen Langton, to make peace between the unpopular king and a group of rebel barons who demanded that the King confirm the Charter of Liberties, it promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift and impartial justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons. I wasn't surprise to read that neither side upheld their side of the charter. You can read the Magna Carta here: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/resources/magna-carta/british-library-magna-carta-1215-runnymede/Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pallettownPaypal donate: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?business=CQ68PXMWB7G8Y&no_recurring=0&currency_code=CAD

    "Candide: Optimism" by Voltaire [Audiobook]

Candide, ou l'Optimisme is a French satire written by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment, first published in 1759. A young man, Candide, lives a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise, being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor, Professor Pangloss. This lifestyle is abruptly ended, followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. Voltaire concludes Candide with, if not rejecting Leibnizian optimism outright, advocating a deeply practical precept, "we must cultivate our garden", in lieu of the Leibnizian mantra of Pangloss, "all is for the best" in the "best of all possible worlds". "The Fall" by Albert Camus [Audiobook]

The Fall (French: La Chute) is a philosophical novel by Albert Camus. First published in 1956, it is his last complete work of fiction. Set in Amsterdam, The Fall consists of a series of dramatic monologues by the self-proclaimed "judge-penitent" Jean-Baptiste Clamence, as he reflects upon his life to a stranger. In what amounts to a confession, Clamence tells of his success as a wealthy Parisian defense lawyer who was highly respected by his colleagues. His crisis, and his ultimate "fall" from grace, was meant to invoke, in secular terms, the fall of man from the Garden of Eden. The Fall explores themes of innocence, imprisonment, non-existence, and truth. "Why Bother?" by Jonathan Franzen [Audio Essay)

"Why Bother?", originally published as "Perchance to Dream: In the Age of Images, a Reason to Write Novels", is a literary essay by American novelist Jonathan Franzen. It is often referred to as "The Harper's Essay". First published in the April 1996 issue of Harper's magazine, the essay concerns the persistence of reading within the context of technological growth and distraction. Franzen recounts his meditations on the state and possibility of the novel form, often against the backdrop of his personal experience, eventually concluding that the novel still has potential cultural agency in the United States, and often gains it by paradoxical drives of both culture and author.
