snacktime - too many daves @ way out weirdo wednesday #39
Name taken from the classic Dr. Seuss poem, Too Many Daves was a short lived collaboration between David Bell and David Burnett, two STL synth heavyweights. If memory serves, they played one set at CBGB and two at the Way Out Club. Here is the first Way Out set, recorded at Way Out Weirdo Wednesday #39 on September 4, 2019. Also on the bill were Matt Bryant from Alabama, Freaky Steve, and Dingus (the band, not your intrepid podcast curator- why he went by that other name for while). If you weren't there, tough shit because you can't go back. Episode 68 nears completion. Stay tuned.

Rusty doing Rusty shit. If you know you know, if you don't... uhhhhh be careful with those eardrums, k? Monster Sized Monster remains one of the knifey-est listens in STL. Recorded by Dingus with their Zoom recording thingus. First time stopping in Moshmellow. Liked it better aesthetically and acoustically than the old Foam days, but still felt like everywhere I stood I was in the way LOL. Show was a goodtime, also on the bill that evening was Hudai, Haunted Hers, and our good pals Brick Thieves, who you heard from last week in Episode 64. You did go listen to episode 64 right? snacktime - noisecamp 2024 "the beast awakens, rudely"
Noisecamp hadn't been a thing since 2014, so most of the people at Interfuse 2024 had no idea what we were about- and if they had bothered to guess, were mostly drastically wrong. We got some fresh blood because the people that it is going to click with, it clicks instantly. Everyone else... well, some people you never get the opportunity to win over if they don't hate you a little first. Ask around, and there will be a lot of "oh gaaaaaawd" but pretty much all of them will admit there was at least one point where they stopped and went "what the hell was that?!? that was cool." Nobody can say we didn't bring immediacy and radical expression anyway. So, here is the sound of yr boi kicking out the first live sounds of this edition of Noisecamp, and of hundreds of ravers and hippies suddenly realizing the burn was going to be a lot longer than they realized... We'll be back eventually... 2025? Hmmmmmmmm. Dunno, we'll see. Likely take this year off, but holler if you're interested. There's another snacktime or two in the recordings from this go-round left, at least; and plenty you'll hear cut into future episodes... Speaking of....

snacktime - ben ricketts @ hi tone 09.12.2024
Yo. Dave again. If you are aware of our particular cycles of idiosyncracies, you were probably already assuming I was the one gumming up the works around here lately. It's true, I have teased temporally relevant snacks that went cold on the counter, promised vintage selections from the vaults and never went down to the cellar to fetch them, and generally sat around with assthumbs instead of laboring episodically. It's been a long, rough year, and I for one am ready to leave this one behind. It occurred to me that one of the things I have been sitting on would actually be perfect to play us out today. Back in September, Ben Ricketts announced he was playing a show for his birthday, retiring a bunch of songs, and taking a hiatus to refresh and reset after the gnarly time he'd been having himself. He's been one of our favorite singer-songwriter types since oh so many moons ago when Tubby Tom first brought him to me at the Way Out. I was supposed to do a remix for a song from his excellent album "Songs for Ruined X-Rays" but I blew that deadline, like your boy do. Yay ADHD. Anyway, digression now completed, I threw my wife in the car and drove through the inland remnants of Hurricane Francine down to Memphis, to catch the show with one of my oldest pals and her husband. It was a good time. We did fun shit. Anyway, here is Ben's birthday set, enjoy it, we'll see you next year LOL. Episode 64 is around the corner. Get more of Ben's excellent work HERE. Also, real weirdos probably wanna check THIS out too. Oh! And he is also in this BAND, they are hella good.

snacktime - roger dodger and the deaf soviets "perestroika"
Hey gang. Dave checking in. During the five years that I worked at the Way Out Club, I am absolutely certain no single person played there more than Bryan Wilson, AKA Roger Dodger. So many nights I walked in to that place not really sure what I was opening up for, and if the first person strolling through the door carrying gear was Roger, I knew I could relax; it was going to be a good time. He was a cheerful guy that loved to play, was always good for a laugh, and legitimately cared about everybody he came into contact with. Every post on social media, every show announcement, every event page, was signed off "Roger Loves You!" He lived his whole life in St. Louis, and began his musical career at 16 with a pawn shop guitar named Nellie that his father bought him. He would play for and with just about anybody, just for the love of playing music. He spent time in numerous bands (often concurrently) including Close2Zero, Flashback, Incredible Goats, St. Villagers, and a short jaunt with Dirty Bombshell. We lost Roger to a tragic mishap on the Meramec River this summer. Shortly after his passing, the mastering of his debut solo EP was completed. The title he gave it is an inside joke with his wife referring to their late pit bull Mikey, which he lovingly nicknamed Mikhail Gorbachev. Paradoxal Pterodactyl, in conjunction with his widow Angela Wilson, is pleased and honored to be able to present it to you here for posterity, on our dearly departed homey's birthday. He was very proud of the work he did on this, and we are very proud to have known him and called him friend. ROGER DODGER & THE DEAF SOVIETS - "PERESTROIKA" 1. Driving With Ice Cream 2. I'm Your Man 3. Killers 4. Surfing Polar Bear 5. Big Fun Big Noise Music and lyrics by Bryan Wilson All instruments except drums played by Bryan Wilson Drums played by Dean Johnson Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Tazu Marshall at Utopia Studios On behalf of Bryan, Angela would like to thank Dave and PP for getting this out there; Tazu and Utopia for making it a reality; Dean for making the long trek out from IL to help make it happen; the Way Out Club (RIP) for opening so many doors for him; Africa Swenson; Jeremy Carpenter; and everyone else who played with him and supported him through this crazy adventure. ROGER LOVES YOU! Stay tuned for more snacktimes and dare I say even some episodes verrrrrrry shortly.

snacktime - chelsea gray (ft. davelybob) @ the way out club 7.14.2017
if you're the type to look back and contemplate at this particular time of year, here's a look back at a contemplative drone set from our archive. guitarist chelsea gray was probably the hottest ticket in the STL experimental scene back in the summer of 2017, after crushing an absolutely stunning debut set at way out weirdo wednesday #18. she's been on extended sabbatical exploring other interests and investing in her young family for quite some time, but she has assured us on numerous occasions that she's not done yet. for this set she composed two short bowed pieces, and then brought up your dude davelybob to moog up a duo improvisation. also on the bill that night was st. michael, honeydew, and particle devotion all the way from baton rouge. goooooood times.

snacktime - pop grunge song
Our feed has been a bit dry lately. Here is a little something to moisten the membrane. I made this one many moons ago. Up to this point, I had been mostly recording songs on my Tascam 424 mkii. This was the first song I made using a DAW. It's just me fiddling with some guitar, bass, drums, and some shakers; but this track has a special place in my pterodactyl heart. I don't think this song is out there anywhere, but Davelybob slipped part of the ending into an early episode. The saga continues.. Your pal, chad

snacktime - death’s dynamic shroud ”neon memories”
death's dynamic shroud is a collaborative project between James Webster (also known as HCMJ), Tech Honors and Keith Rankin (aka Giant Claw, also label boss at Orange Milk Records, who just released the new record from our pal Problems- more on that later). death's dynamic shroud typically samples video game soundtracks in a mixtape-style format, oftentimes with special distortions and modifications made as a result of being bounced off analog recordings. Since Keith joined up, they have explore a much more high-fidelity, experimental sound (including sampling of anime soundtracks and k-pop), developing a distinct sound and visual aesthetic they personally refer to as "NUWRLD". You can see death's dynamic shroud on tour with Small Black, hitting STL ummmmmm TONIGHT at Off Broadway, presented by that fine purveyor of warm fuzzy musical events, VaporspaceSTL. Should have got this up before, but things regularly sneak up on us and you're not really surprised, are you? Ope, indeed. Here you go, give a listen to the lead single and title track of the new album, Neon Memories, available for preorder here, and then go to the dang show. And follow VaporspaceSTL if you want the skinny on upcoming events in an actually timely fashion, their shizz is top notch, we love 'em.

snacktime - modo - stocking stuffer
Modo & Semidubs link up again for a different take on a Christmas inspired song. Sampling "It's beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" by Bing Crosby, Stocking Stuffer compiles elements of trap style. Sean “Modo” Jones is a rapper whose eclectic lyrical content and production sets him apart from his peers. Branching out and swerving lanes is far from taboo in Modo’s world, in fact it is just part of the process. His method of utilizing multiple genres to acquiesce the expansion of his expression is the sign of a true artist. Modo’s engineering talents allow him to create every aspect of his music and shows the true skill level and dedication to his craft. His goal of leaving a positive impact and helping to further the genre has led him to constitute new opportunities for not only himself but other artists as well. https://m.soundcloud.com/modomusic94

THE FUTURE: paradoxal pterodactyl, a periodical podcast (pronounced "puh-puh-puh-puh)- like cicadas, sometimes we slumber, but until the grid fails and takes this series of tubes with it, and packs of cannibals roam the overgrown streets, this podcast persists. and our archives are more massive than ever. observant pterodactyl spotters may have encountered pp stickers in the wild of late, we can confirm such occurrences, and would like the public to prepare for further merchandise migrations through these areas sometime in the next few seasons. now that way out weirdo wednesday has officially been laid to rest (condolences if this is news to you) and davelybob has retired from 99% of booking activities, our paradoxal powers shall push our pterodactyl purview into perpendicular production potentialities. your curator pals will be working with some of our favorite artists and sometime next year you should see the first fruits of these labors in the launch of our new digital and cd-r label. fucking SNAP, you heard us. also it would appear there is a mysterious new shadowy figure on the horizon... a new curator? snacktime - hxxs @ davelybob's virtual birthday show
if it wasn't totally obvious, the pp staff have had a bit of a love affair with hxxs the last couple years. currently residing in kansas city, brad played a show with them in denver and then sent them to davelybob for booking in STL. practically overnight they became the touring band he brought to town the most in his 19 years as a promoter. when dave says he is 99% retired from booking activities, that remaining 1% is reserved for hxxs and very few others. dave was super stoked that gavin and jeannie and their sometimes-drummer ricky were down to play his birthday show, and very pleased to share their set with you now. we shan't try to describe their music, it is beyond words, and beyond belief. those who have heard the recordings know what's up. those who have seen them live are *obsessed*. to say these songs are powerful is an understatement, "these songs could start a cult if they wanted to" is more like it. on top of all that they're also the nicest, kindest, just best people. In a logical world, this music would make them gazillionaires. but this world is what it is, and them being the sincere passionate leftists they are, they have a habit of throwing their earnings towards solving problems around them and bettering their community. which is noble, but left them in an awfully tight spot a few months back, when a senseless act of violence on their block claimed their tour van (which also served as their daytime money-maker) as collateral damage. they have been struggling to recoup their losses since, and are almost back on their feet. a gofundme is linked below, and gavin has been regularly livestreaming improv sets with high fidelity recordings available for donations. and you could always buy their records. just saying, help 'em out, they are good kids making important music. also, let's all take a second real quick to recognize that goddamn banger "ful health" as the plague anthem to end all plague anthems. jeeeeezus. wearehxxs.bandcamp.com @wearehxxs on most social .media platforms https://www.gofundme.com/f/replacement-van-for-jeannie-gavin-and-hxxs NOW, are you READY? snacktime - buddhist regret @way out weirdo wednesday #42
davelybob started booking shows 19 years ago in the stlpunk scene. years later his first gigs as a performer were sitting in with catholic guilt as part of a rather lengthy list of rotating musicians supplementing the core trio of sean burk, joe stein, and nick zengerling (who dave knew from booking his old band krafted in korea). fast forward over a decade of reigning as one of STL's most celebrated and perverse noise units, and catholic guilt has been in an extended hiatus pretty much since releasing their box set & dvd board game a couple years ago (you heard me), further deepened by sean moving to california. they are not dead though, merely sleeping anyways, the writing had been on the wall for davelybob, and anticipating winding down most of his booking activities, he wanted nothing more than to blast the way out club with his homies one last time, so he lassoed joe and zeng for this monster of a set. it didn't seem right using the catholic guilt name without sean, hence the tongue in cheek moniker ;) yeah. good times.

two years ago on his birthday, davelybob unexpectedly had to put down his dog after a sudden turn in health. last year on his birthday (the big four oh), he was at the hospital with his wife, who was recovering from brain surgery. this year covid quarantine began just a week or so before his birthday. determined to make some goddamn lemonade, he booked himself a birthday concert with some of his favorite acts nationwide on facebook live, one of the very first online fests to pop up during the pandemic. if you didn't catch ali naeini playing his santoor (persian hammered dulcimer) when he lived in st louis, well that's your bad, dumbass- we tried to tell you! he was already a regular performer at festival of nations when he befriended davelybob at their day job. We quickly booked him on a way out weirdo wednesday, and everyone went wild for him. collaborations with percussionists drew gowran and alberto patino followed, and prior to his move to san francisco, he was toying with ideas for a fusion band blending rock and several global traditional musics, which he was jamming out with some members of the st. louis symphony orchestra. in an alternate universe somewhere, you are all going ape shit over that right now. ali is dedicated to his instrument in a way that in our long careers we have rarely seen, and obscenely modest about his immense talent. he's got a wicked sense of humor too. thank you for playing my birthday party ali! we love you and miss you! let's talk soon, i have some ideas.

snacktime - animals rule oslo @way out weirdo wednesday #43
animals rule oslo is the once and future collaboration of david bell (jaded evil lambs, etc) and john forrest (sunwyrm, aluminum sasquatch trio). Their performance from the last way out weirdo wednesday back on march 4th (did you parse that properly? hmmm, probably...) is as yet their only recording, but no doubt not their last. how's that for a brief and concise blurb, eh? lol.

snacktime - instinct control @ kismet creative center 3/25/2016
"action permeates as fiber—an unwitting participant breathes and the act is suddenly thrown from a predicted path. resist urges to tighten constraint. re-imagine rigid systems as fluid opportunity: //instinct control// -- outmoded technologies, devices, pathways, turned upon themselves and us in new ways of being. metonymic transmitters and receivers all." this performance was recorded by davelybob at his 37th birthday party at the sorely missed kismet creative center (you can catch tommy slinging his vinyl at wax rats now if you wanna say hi and catch up). instinct control for this performance consisted of ryan t. dunn, his hands, a reel-to-reel player, his foot, a vcr, his other foot, and an answering machine. get more: instinctcontrol.bandcamp.com dig his other project, maoƟ: vimeo.com/457884363

snacktime - datewithdeath "thrush urn"
hey! a snacktime! what a novel idea! sure has been awhile since those were a regular thing! why, i bet those pterodactyl boys are sitting on a whole heap of bright shiny eggs right now... one of the few pieces of good news in 2020 is the recently announced un-retirement of floridian friend of the podcast (and really interesting person to know if you are into gardening), travis johnson. his compilation series & digital label poverty electronics is back to serve up more slammin' leftist experimental techno, hip hop, ambient, and noise (poverty electronics vol. 4 just dropped at the end of august) as well as his own project datewithdeath, which is currently taking pre-orders through 10/30 for the new album slow talker. we are pleased to present an advance track from the album, thrush urn, which on 10/16 will be released as a single with exclusive remixes by teen smoking, all the stores are closed, mhzesent, and jukka-pekka kervinen! it's fire, go check it all out at: povertyelectronics.bandcamp.com
