Peculiar Citizen

Bible thumpers. Jesus junkies. Though proclaimers of John 3:16 love for the world, Christians are known for over-the-top antics, controversial beliefs and hurtful actions. Today’s episode confronts the sometimes-true and surprising idea that maybe all can be true – even for what’s considered an outdated and irrelevant belief system in a progressive society.

Ageism may still be the last frontier in acceptable discrimination and American beauty standards can play a big part. It has folks slathering their faces with special creams, installing hair units, getting botox injections and going under the knife. Because getting older is not valued, but rather feared. And those past the age of acceptability are often ignored or even targeted. But in actuality those in a mature stage of life may be the ones we should be envying.

The American workplace. Often these spaces are a hotbed of bad behavior and for those considered the “other,” uncultured thinking, microaggressions, gaslighting, and even more dangerous situations take place every day. It’s time to amplify the story of the “others” and give voice to these valid experiences.

Being reserved, quiet or shy is often seen as negative or a trait that holds less value compared to being bold and boisterous. Ever heard of the phrase “watch out for the quiet ones”? But introverts have a quiet influence that’s given the world some of its greatest artists, inventors and pioneers. Let’s tap in and air this out.   

Those in the black community that don’t always fit the labels considered hallmarks of the “culture” can often feel the brunt of criticism and feel disconnected from their identity. Can blackness truly be measured or does it transcend beyond popular opinion?
