Work Wonders: White House Zipper - Episode 2
In this episode of Work Wonders, we shine a spotlight on a man whose daily grind quietly supports some of the most iconic places in America—whether anyone notices or not. Meet Dale Mumford, lead installer for Secure‑Tie Technologies and the unassuming force behind the Titan‑Grip 5000 zip tie. While host Alex Kurtz arrives with his trademark enthusiasm and a flair for turning every job into a heroic saga, Dale brings a refreshingly grounded perspective: he’s just a guy trying not to drop a bag of zip ties into the hedges outside the White House. If you’ve ever wondered who keeps history from wobbling, who prevents chaos from dangling overhead, or who makes sure the fence looks “aesthetic,” this is your episode. Buckle in for a celebration of simple tools, steady hands, and the workers who quietly hold the world together. Along the way, Alex’s dramatic interpretations collide with Dale’s matter‑of‑fact honesty, creating a perfect blend of comedy, curiosity, and appreciation for the people who keep things running—one zip tie at a time.

Junkyard - by Clifford D. Simak
JUNKYARD was first published in the May 1953 issue of Galaxy Magazine before becoming a part of the Golden Age of radio. The story was adapted for the airways and was originally broadcast on February 22, 1956 on the X-1 show broadcasting on NBC radio. JUNKYARD tells the tale of a spaceship crew exploring a planet they’ve spied from afar, and what looks to them to be an inexplicable pile of junk on the planet’s surface. They land to investigate. One by one the crew begins to exhibit memory loss, and soon can’t remember how to start the ship’s engines for take-off. The mystery becomes curiouser and curiouser, taking several unanticipated twists. Will the crew not only discover what is causing their memory loss, but be able to do so before they forget what they are attempting? One mystery leads to another in this cleverly imagined story. As fans of science fiction, we chose JUNKYARD as our first show as it was one of the more intriguing science fiction scenarios we ran across during our initial Old Time Radio perusals. Plus, it gave two actors the chance to portray multiple interesting characters and research music as well as sound effects, which were something we hadn’t done before. We think you’ll enjoy this blast from the past as much as we did producing it and hopefully you’ll want to listen again to two guys with time on their hands doing something they love.
