Pleasant Conversations

Ever feel like you are begrudgingly trying to find joy in your life? You’re not alone. The news, doom scrolling, your nana casually flying a flag promoting a hate group we all thought died out decades ago…it’s a rough world out there. No matter how hard it gets, we all have to find the positivity happening in this hellscape called Earth. Let us do the dirty work to prove that even though we’re all secretly hoping that deadly asteroid arrives sooner rather than later, we can still find our community, gather around the dumpster fire, and have some Pleasant Conversations.

Both episodes ARE included in this rewind, so make sure you stick around after part one.So sit back in your favorite post-holiday-insanity-comfort-wear, make yourself a concoction to take off the winter chill, and join us for some pleasant conversations (Rewind Edition)!

    What’s Kwanzo?

It’s the final special episode for this holiday season! Jasmine and Michael hope you all had a wonderful time during the holidays with your loved ones and that you enjoyed our break from normal programming. We wanted to get more to you, but life had to life, and time ran thin. But I digress. This week, we want to wish all who celebrate a very happy Kwanzaa! And what better way to celebrate than to head back to Nickelodeon and discuss “A Rugrats Kwanzaa”. Admittedly, we would have gotten a little more if we had watched “The Proud Family” episode, but there’s always next year!We implore you, dear listeners, to come in out of the rain, gather with your loved ones, break open an old scrapbook, make some peanut butter sandwiches (or a different butter if you’re allergic), and join us for a final holiday episode of “Pleasant Conversations”.See you next year!

    Sleigh, Not Slay *Snap* S-L-A-Y

Merry Christmas and look out for those pesky flying mammals pulling a fat guy in a sleigh! This week, Jasmine and Michael are joined by the pod’s personal guru, Lucas! Randy Brooks wrote a song that incensed grandmothers for decades and then Time Warner made an animated special about it! That’s right, your Christmas gift from the pod is a discussion about “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer”. Grab your eggnog and reindeer nip, don’t forget to take your meds, watch out for those misguided sleds, and join us for another holiday pleasant conversation!

    We Originated Guilt in Cartoons

Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate! This week’s episode, we dive into an animated classic telling of the “Meanie of Chanukah” and are joined by an extra-special, first-time guest, Melissa! As this is the first time Michael is joined in his “studio” with a guest, the sound is different, but the laughs are still the same.Join Jasmine, Michael, and Melissa as they discuss an episode of the Nickelodeon animated series “Rugrats”, which tells the story of Hanukkah through the eyes of the precocious, titular toddlers.Grab your dreidel and gelt for some unregulated gambling in bubbe’s basement while the adults fry up latkes and toast with Manischewitz, and we all have some pleasant conversations!

“Believe That Now Your Best is Yet to Come…”

Jasmine and Michael are plugging along with their holiday movie reviews with a modern classic musical adventure. Take a journey with our hosts as they travel to a Dickensian English village of a different timeline, filled with whimsical inventors, plucky kids, magical toys, randy postwomen, and the legendary Phylicia Rashad. Spoiler alert: they loved this movie! So dust off your magic robots and twirl your evil mustaches as we solve the “Square Root of Possible” and have some pleasant conversations.

Brooding, Sexy Ghosts and the Estate Lawyers Who Love Them

Happy December 1st, dear listeners! Mariah Carey has emerged from her slumber, and it’s time for peppermint mochas, sugary treats, sleigh bells, and some of the best AND worst holiday movies and specials.First up, our foul-mouthed bestie from Down Undah, Cass, joins us to discuss a holiday murder mystery brought to us courtesy of Lifetime. This movie has everything: snowy scenes in an old mansion, a distractingly handsome spirit with witty comebacks, a plucky female lead who questions her purpose, and a pocket watch that has NOTHING to do with the plot, even though it would have been the perfect device for the entire story. So make yourself an Old Fashioned or five, get those chestnuts roaring in the dumpster fire, and join us for some spooky (?), holiday pleasant conversations!

Turkey Day With the Messy Whites

Happy Turkey Day! We hope you are all enjoying time with your loved ones and “gobbling up” all the good food being offered. We also hope your gravy isn’t tainted with bigotry. In this special episode, our hosts are discussing the 1995 chaotic classic, “Home for the Holidays”. Spoiler alert: Jasmine is not a fan. If you have a messy family, you’ll feel right at home. If not, come see how the other half live (and love, in their own f’ed up kind of way). So grab a bottle of wine, help yourself to a heaping pile of mashed potatoes, watch out for flying turkeys, and join us for this extra helping of our Thanksgiving pleasant conversations!

    “Those Aren’t Pillows!”

The holiday season is nigh, so Jasmine and Michael have decided to take a break from the normal programming structure to bring you some special episodes to keep you in the spirit while the world continues to burn around us.On today’s episode, our hosts travel back to 1987 for a John Hughes Thanksgiving classic comedy. We end as we always do, sharing joy, getting a weekly affirmation (which has a picture that makes Michael slightly uncomfortable), and pleasantries. Have you started your holiday shopping yet? If not, join the rest of us for a few nips around the dumpster fire as we continue to procrastinate by having some pleasant conversations.

Michael reviews both “M3GAN 2.0” and “Ironheart”.The Wheel of Topics brings up bad advice our hosts have received in education. Ashes and Embers include lost debit cards, fun trips with good friends, sleep, and employment. We end with good advice from our affirmation cards, and an explosive “I’m Pleasant, Damn It”.Don your American flag apparel, channel your inner Little Edie, and join us for another pleasant conversation! It’s Going to Make Me Sound a Little WooWoo

Move over, Sylvia Browne! This week, we end Pride month by casting magic missile and are joined by our spiritual advisor, Lucas! We reminisce about how we met and when we all had an adventure together a few years back. Then we get into some mystical s*** right off the bat, which sends us on a tangent about animals (shocker). The news brings us stories of Utah Pride, a Midwest town’s first-ever drag show, Italian LGBTQ+ family rights, and Hungarian Pride in the face of conservatism. The Wheel of Topics brings us our very first mini game: Keep It or Cut it—Queer Tropes. Will it get us canceled by the queer community? Only the Fates know for sure. But there are definitely some hot takes.Lucas shares a beautifully spiritual Ashes & Embers, whilst Michael and Jasmine get petty. We then get a great bonus card for our weekly affirmation.Hopefully, you won’t have to smudge your space after listening to the episode. Apologies to non-theater people, but this takes over our news segment. Have a listen and get some culture! Speaking of culture, our Wheel of Topics will give you some fun Pride month media recs. The episode is chock-full of laughs, corny jokes, and celebrating community. Welcome back listeners, as we are joined by our first guest! The wonderful Cass joins us from the future in Sydney, Australia for a pleasant conversation full of laughs, deep talks, and so much profanity. Jasmine and Michael bring trans, queer comic book, and LGBTQIA+ senior news from the States. The Wheel of Topics gets a bit deep again with discussions on times someone has trusted our gang with their truth.Michael makes a terrible Australian joke as we begin Ashes & Embers, which are a mix of petty and profound and include an international rant against our current, dangerous political climate. “Existing Shouldn’t Be Revolutionary”

It’s Pride Month and Lucky Number 13! This week, Jasmine and Michael kick off their four-part Pride celebration with recaps of their week and upcoming June plans. (And, yes, you heard Michael say he worked at a Renaissance Festival once.)The news brings us a last gift from Pope Francis and what will be a theme the entire month: positive LGBTQIA+ news from around the world! We also get a Muckles at the Movies where Michael talks about “Lilo & Stitch”.The Wheel of Topics will also be Pride-themed for these four episodes. This week, our hosts talk about how their views on gender, family, and love have evolved over the years.Petty Jasmine returns for Ashes & Embers and Michael misspeaks about the Stonewall Monument (they took down references to transgender and queer, not the whole monument description).  Our affirmation of the week is “wonder”.Break out your rainbow accoutrement, blast the music of any diva of your choice, throw a brick for Marsha, and join us for some pleasant conversations!Follow us on Instagram and Threads: @PleasantConvosPodEmail us: [email protected]Good News Links:The Popemobile of Peace: Pope Francis’ final gift to Gaza: https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2025-05/the-popemobile-of-peace-pope-francis-final-gift-to-gaza.htmlA trans teacher in Southeast LA was fired. This week, Jasmine and Michael go off the rails and forget that when the episode drops, it will be Pride month (except we all know who actually forgot).Jasmine finally shares her plans for June, and, shocker, they are Disney-related. So, yet again, the podcast visits the Haus of Mouse for a bit. Then, Michael talks Ren Faires. The news dives into environmental activism, the return of Sesame Street, marine refreshment, the World Masters Games, LGBTQIA+ allyship, and even more environmental news.Jasmine teases us with magical penguin poop, but moves on to the Wheel of Topics, which has our hosts talking about superpower desires.Join us for another rousing, pleasant conversation. **Please forgive this week's sound issues. Michael tried a different audio setup, which led to some unexpected problems during recording.**This week, our hosts become unhinged pretty early on. Jasmine regales us with stories from her trip to the Grammy Museum, which rivals Michael’s recap of his vacation last week! We’ve got good news on women’s health, post-Brexit reconciliation, sweaters for penguins, youths saving our world’s water, and farmers getting their climate data back. Michael shares some “blazing” trending news, going off on the glorification of plantations, and some quotes from our Internet Daddy, Pedro Pascal. The Wheel of Topics explores the evolution of friendships, in which we get a little deep. Jordan Fisher, Why Did You Make Me Digress?

Buckle in, kiddos, we have another marathon episode. This week, Michael is back from vacation, and our hosts have A LOT to say (yes, even Jasmine) because there is some catching up to do! Jasmine fills us in on the L.A. Times Book Festival, and Michael gushes about his Orlando adventure. Seriously, the smiles segment takes up about half of the episode—but they are worth it!Michael talks Marvel (reminder, “Ironheart” premieres on Disney+ on June 24th), grandma activities, and Epic Universe. Jasmine talks about axolotls, Taco Bell, and seals. The Wheel of Topics makes Michael utilize that explicit label on the podcast (mouth like a sailor, that one). On a very special episode of “Pleasant Conversations,” the gang has to intervene when Jesse becomes addicted to caffeine pills due to the stress of exams and performing in a girl group.Kidding.This week, our hosts take a break from their regularly scheduled program to give listeners insight into who they are. Jasmine and Michael use categorized questions, chosen at random, to interview each other. They talk about everything from childhood building blocks to hot takes to alien life. One question even has Jasmine saying a bad word! Michael makes promises of more engagement on socials (which he does not fulfill) and gets heated over a question about soup. The conversation is full of laughs, surprises, and plenty of filler words, and is, as always, pleasant.Follow us on Instagram and Threads: @PleasantConvosPodEmail us: [email protected]

It’s Time to Get Into Some Timey-Wimey Bulls****!

This week, our hosts start off discussing upcoming travel plans. Then Michael dives into positive trends of pitties, podcasts, viral singers, and the rebellion in a galaxy far, far away. In the news, J & M celebrate the environment with the return of sea turtles, ocean-saving efforts, 3-D printing as an eco warrior, an environmental journey that would make Julie Taymor jealous, and a firefly lottery (not the concert) in the Smokies. They wrap things up with some events happening around the world in May.The Wheel of Topics sets off a nerd alert, and our hosts talk time travel (and discover they are obsessed with Paul Walker and Rachel McAdams)! We find out Michael wants to go to Victorian England to see…the gas lamps? (NERD) Then J & M just go hog wild about time travel movies and shows.Jasmine needs a name for her “Curbside Cooldown” alter ego! The Fish Doorbell Awakens

This week, we give some holiday wishes to our listeners (and Michael stumbles through some basic Hebrew). Fish doorbells and more “A Goofy Movie” content are keeping a huge smile on Jasmine’s face. Michael confuses Ricky Martin and Chris Pine (as one does) and talks about his love for “Waitress” (the movie and the musical). In the news: gun control, political drag queens, women athletes representing hard at the 2028 Summer Olympics, sea turtles are making a big return (cue Michael ranting about paper straws), New Mexico’s free child care, and microbes giving life on other planets (and Michael biffs a “Saved by the Bell” reference — the song is “A 12” not “K 12”).Muckles at the Movies is all about the love Michael has for Ryan Coogler’s hit film “Sinners”! Listen for his spoiler-free review and overall thoughts on the film and its amazing cast. The Wheel of Topics takes our hosts to a deserted island. Extra, extra! Michael’s a bully who talked so long during a segment that he started the next one without asking Jasmine to contribute. To be fair, he was discussing the Hulu miniseries “Dying for Sex” and got caught up in the moment. This week, Jasmine and Michael talk about the 30th Anniversary of “A Goofy Movie”, good news from around the world (including sports—what??), and Michael makes a very crass joke (sorry, Mom). The Wheel of Topics gets our hosts talking about things they used to believe as kids, but don’t anymore. Just like the Good Ship Lollipop, we’re all-inclusive, so join us on the shuffleboard deck for some shrimp cocktail, Negronis, and Pleasant Conversations.Follow us on Instagram and Threads: @PleasantConvosPodEmail us: [email protected] News Links:https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/big-brothers-big-sisters-returns-to-new-orleans-after-20-years-being-closed-by-hurricane-katrina/Little Free Library opens its 200,000th book box in a milestone for youth literacy: https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/little-free-library-200000-milestoneRecord-Breaking Migration of Orange-Bellied Parrot Will be Flying High After Years of Conservation Work Pays Off: https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/record-breaking-orange-bellied-parrot-migration-expected-after-years-of-hard-conservation-work-pay-off/A Black-led church is turning their underused land into affordable housing for their neighbors: https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/church-affordable-housing-service-faithKAIST team discovers molecular switch to reverse cancer cells: https://www.news-medical.net/news/20250206/KAIST-team-discovers-molecular-switch-to-reverse-cancer-cells.aspx#3D-printed tiny homes made from recycled plastics offer speedy transitional housing to LA wildfire victims: https://www.goodgoodgood.co/articles/azure-3d-printed-homes-los-angeles-wildfiresAdorable oldest choir, with average age of 94, win record title during Christmas concert: https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2025/1/adorable-oldest-choir-with-average-age-of-94-win-record-title-during-christmas-concert

What Are Today’s Specials, Michelle Obama?

This week, Jasmine and Michael are punchy thanks to spring allergies and just *gestures blindly to everything around*. Jasmine helps to make the news more fulfilling, and Michael talks galactic real estate. The Wheel of Topics finally comes through with something a little more fun, and the duo relives some Disney trauma. But Yeah, Like, You Know, Um…It’s Self-Discovery

Jasmine and Michael sit down for the first episode of “Pleasant Conversations”, and it all goes pretty well. Self-Discovery is the topic of the day and upon listening back, Michael has discovered his vocabulary mostly consists of filler words (drinking game/BINGO for the folks at home). After crushing the topic, Jasmine gives us a spin on her fun wheel, and we’re all the better for it. It’s a packed episode that still manages to get a “Grease 2” reference in at the end. Pleasant Conversations: Coming March 17th

Five years ago, the world was completely changed by a devastating pandemic. Quarantines were mandatory, masks and gloves were the trending accessories in grocery stores, and we all had to find new ways to connect with one another. Video conferencing became a very popular way for communities to gather, kvetch, have a happy hour, attend religious services, get divorced, play games, etc. In November of 2020, a group of podcast fans got together virtually to celebrate one of their birthdays. Another video call was held for Thanksgiving, then more going into the holidays and beyond. For about a year, a community was created consisting of people of all different ages, backgrounds, and countries. That’s where we, Jasmine and Michael, met and connected. Years later, we have decided to start a podcast. Will it work? Will people care? We’re not sure. We just figured we’d invite others to take part in our discussions. We’ll have weekly catch-ups, guests, games, a wheel of topics, audience suggestions, and a closing segment inspired by Ouiser Boudreaux of Chinquapin Parrish to ensure we go out on a positive note no matter how heated we get. Pull up a chair and join us around the dumpster fire for some ‘Pleasant Conversations.’

ABOUT THIS SHOW

Ever feel like you are begrudgingly trying to find joy in your life? You’re not alone. The news, doom scrolling, your nana casually flying a flag promoting a hate group we all thought died out decades ago…it’s a rough world out there. No matter how hard it gets, we all have to find the positivity happening in this hellscape called Earth. Let us do the dirty work to prove that even though we’re all secretly hoping that deadly asteroid arrives sooner rather than later, we can still find our community, gather around the dumpster fire, and have some Pleasant Conversations.
