The RebelRebel Podcast by author Michael Dargie. Special guest CEO Richard Blank

The RebelRebel Podcast is a regular dive into the hearts and minds of creative rebels and entrepreneurs from around the globe, it's a love letter to those mad fools who think audaciously and act courageously in service to making the world a better and more interesting place.“You shouldn’t use words to burn. They should be for light and for warmth.”Richard has spent the last 19 years running a near-shore bilingual contact center that thrives on empathy, communication, and human connection in an era dominated by automation. In this episode, Michael Dargie sits down with Richard Blank, CEO of Costa Rica’s Call Center. Richard has spent the last 19 years running a near-shore bilingual contact center that thrives on empathy, communication, and human connection in an era dominated by automation .Richard’s story begins in Philadelphia, where childhood trips to Mexico sparked his love of Spanish and culture. After studying Spanish in college, he took what was supposed to be a short trip to Costa Rica to teach English at a friend’s center. Instead, he fell in love—with the country, with the culture, and with the woman who would become his wife. That leap of faith became a lifelong adventure, culminating in the creation of Costa Rica’s Call Center .He explains why call centers aren’t just about dialing lists—they’re about rhetoric, persuasion, and the art of speech. For Richard, the real skill lies in listening, building rapport, and finding those rare “positive escalations” where a customer compliments an representative to their supervisor. He compares communication to fire: it can burn, but it can also light and warm, and the best representatives know how to use it for encouragement and clarity .The conversation ranges widely, from his love of 1970s electromechanical pinball machines and jukebox rescues in the Costa Rican mountains, to his passion for movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and The Maltese Falcon. Richard also shares the daily joys of Costa Rican life—warm rain in a convertible, fresh seafood at the market, and the surreal beauty of the rainforest .At the heart of it all is his philosophy: rebels in waiting should remove unnecessary weight, play the long game, and find balance. Business doesn’t require shortcuts or being number one—it requires integrity, patience, and compassion. His advice is simple: plan ahead, stay curious, and make space for yourself so your best ideas can surface.Quoteable Quotes“It’s a luxury trade—where else can you speak to hundreds of people a day?” — Richard Blank“You shouldn’t use words to burn. They should be for light and for warmth.” — Richard Blank“If you can’t find ways to decompress, you’ll never last as an entrepreneur.” — Richard Blank“They need more compassion—it starts with simply acknowledging existence.” — Richard Blank“You’re Canadian, that’s fun.” — Richard Blankhttps://youtu.be/xeXtFvyl9_khttps://youtu.be/SP43ryDRjFEhttps://youtu.be/CcqOPWNa6tQhttps://youtu.be/pb4VNFdNuo4https://youtu.be/9GZ7jTiwDwghttps://youtu.be/V3koTKEWZMEhttps://youtu.be/nRUGIOhvNBohttps://youtu.be/ynYIIF067Bshttps://youtu.be/FYO924TimAwhttps://youtu.be/FD-_rI-lPCshttps://youtu.be/8k7HNcHcHSkhttps://youtu.be/_5TQhtjeQBohttps://youtu.be/vOrmTLUHQcchttps://youtu.be/AAcmajxnF0shttps://youtu.be/1veCAfYmRx0https://youtu.be/mQa0gOe5Sekhttps://youtu.be/My9MAWW4QiE Hosted on Acast. Sponsored by Valuu AI, we are committed to bringing you valuable content that helps navigate the evolving digital landscape.Navigating the New Work LandscapeRyan Purvis probes into the transformative effects of remote work on business operations. Richard candidly admits, “The labor pool prefers working from home... But I'm old school, I'd like to see people.” While embracing technology, he stresses the irreplaceable value of human interaction and the spontaneity of office conversations. The switchover to cloud-based systems, a critical move for many businesses, also forms a large part of their discussion.Leveraging AI Without Losing HumanityA focal point of their conversation is the role of AI in transforming business practices. Richard sees AI as augmentative rather than replaceable, highlighting its role in enhancing efficiency while preserving the human touch. “The AI can never hug you...or say Happy birthday,” he asserts, advocating for a balanced approach where AI handles routine tasks, leaving humans to build genuine relationships. Ryan, too, stresses this point, noting how AI can simplify tasks, granting more time for personal pursuits.Richard's views are clear: “There’s a lot of entry-level and easily replaceable employees that feel threatened,” he acknowledges, but emphasizes, “If you have skills... companies will still hire you.” It's a reminder that while AI is revolutionizing how we work, it cannot replicate human empathy or creativity.Building a Future with Personal TouchesDespite technological shifts, Richard stresses the importance of empathy and personal connections. “There is no replacement for the satisfaction of a real high-five,” he insists, capturing the essence of human interaction that technology can't replace. His narrative is not just about adapting to change but doing so while cherishing the human elements of his industry.Wrap-up:As Ryan and Richard's conversation draws to a close, the key takeaway is clear: adapt to new technologies while maintaining the human touch that sets businesses apart. And that is fine. But if you like Culture, Fashion, Philosophy, Business, Traveling, In a Relationship or NOT! This Podcast is for you.Leadership with Empathy & The Decline of Job TrainingWell, first and foremost, thank you so much for mentioning that. I have learned something being an owner of a company that you do have leverage. You can always hire, fire, make or break somebody. And so it should be humbling for the fact that somebody wants to come and add wind in your sails and you're only as good as the people that support you. And so for me, it's so important to make sure they have their dignity and that you show empathy. and that they're just not treated like a number or a robot, that these are investments and these individuals should be given delegation so they can grow within your company. So it's very important for me to see how high and how far these individuals can fly with me. So I'm always their biggest fan, always putting one in their sales. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Well, I have a story to tell. So I have, I'm an independent contractor. Um, And I get different contracts for different jobs. And I am learning that the, I don't even know what to call it. The people that are doing these 1099 jobs are getting lazy. And what I mean by getting lazy is the training. They don't even train me no more. What they're doing is sending you links to videos and you train yourself. I done had five contracts do that to me. You train yourself, they send you these videos, you look at these videos, you train yourself and then you go out on the floor. I don't agree with that. I feel like just because you're a contractor doesn't mean that you're gonna be able to go through and just do it. You still need that training. And I'm glad you don't do that, Mr. Blank.https://youtu.be/TJ92rBNNIkwhttps://youtu.be/ulqS8ZgEg1A?si=rEa12DfGqTHZYAjXhttps://youtu.be/gen4mLeCq8I Hosted on Acast. In this episode, Richard takes us on his journey as he leverages his advanced Spanish-speaking skills, business prowess, and emotional intelligence to build and scale Costa Rica s Call Center from a one-seat to a 300-seat operation. While his friends pursued careers in fields like law, medicine, and technology, Richard Blank went in a completely different direction  language. In fact, his love of language and communications led him to study abroad for one semester in Spain. That experience changed the trajectory of his life.Discover how Richard used a cash-only approach to invest in the business infrastructure required to lay a foundation for sustainable growth, his tips for reducing attrition, and why he urges entrepreneurs to act their wage. Growth is not a bad thing. But too much growth, too fast presents a set of challenges often overlooked when discussing small businesses. The emphasis tends to center on the marketing and promotion necessary to grow your business, and not on the operations and business infrastructure needed to scale your business in a sustainable manner. These back office operations can make or break your business. https://youtu.be/qw09sFl1DZUhttps://youtu.be/Gpq-w_WWdn8https://youtu.be/Cf1PDpZu67Mhttps://youtu.be/It9x2zUkxC8https://youtu.be/TYSM3A8Wlx0https://youtu.be/DG1TJ9JcS0khttps://youtu.be/Kg_qKh-mqxUhttps://youtu.be/rBmgKSYfl7Ahttps://youtu.be/yYqbU9t9wm8https://youtu.be/7MS_otvgGT4https://youtu.be/nHvXMgWDlBAAlicia Butler Pierre is the Founder & CEO of Equilibria, Inc. I’m talking with Richard Blank from Costa Rica. Episode 79 of Off the Comma podcast lands today

In this episode, we talk to Richard Blank. He is empathetic, confident and has “old school grit”. Richard lives in Costa Rica. You’re stuck, I get it. I’ve been there too. I call it “sitting on a comma”. We all know what it’s like to feel stuck in life and not know where to go next. This podcast is all about what it’s like to be on the comma, as shared by individuals just like ourselves. We will explore what they experienced, what they learned and how they got themselves off the comma. See more at YouTube @offthecomma!Richard tells us about getting off the comma created by familial and societal expectations. Growing up in a world where he was expected to follow a prescribed path, Richard describes feeling like he didn’t fit in and appearing as a failure to those around him. Allowing himself to “fail out” led him to find a new path and surprise himself with what he would find along the way. Paying attention to his instincts and the signs along the way, he ultimately found himself in another country, speaking a different language, and enjoying a success he never imagined. Tune in to hear what Richard means when he says “friends tell me they wish they had tried”. https://youtu.be/UjjNcZ79crMhttps://youtu.be/clTjtxUt8UQ?si=XsocL8_ZbFZxE_9mRichard Blank hired bassist Garry Gary Beers of INXS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGjN5H4xPQRichard would like to acknowledge the following individuals, organizations and/or causes that matter to him and invite you to consider supporting them and/or sharing their messages:"Shine like the Sun" by Igni Ferroque https://youtu.be/wnQX8TEagis?si=XtJsaPrlWSznZ-gV Igni Ferroque is a Costa Rican rock group that was born at the end of 1978. Igni Ferroque, which from Latin means iron and fire, performed its first concert in the Colegio La Salle auditorium on September 15, 1978. My firsthand knowledge involved the attention to detail, clarity to avoid miscommunication and the generosity of his sincere efforts. Experiencing a comfortable first time business deal was a pleasure. The financial investment in working with Mr. Beers was worth the extemporaneous chance to meet a multi-platinum bass guitarist. Modern Revenue Strategies presents Mastering Sales with Richard Blank.B2B Growth Blueprint Podcast .

The Future of Sales: AI, Soft Skills, and Human Connection Sales is no longer just about scripts and automation—it’s about human connection, strategic communication, and effectively leveraging AI. Richard Blank, CEO of Costa Rica’s Call Center, shares how blending soft skills, gamification, and AI can enhance customer engagement and improve sales outcomes. In the latest episode of the B2B Growth Blueprint Podcast, host Mark Osborne speaks with Richard about the power of emotional intelligence in sales, how AI can complement human conversations, and why creating an engaging work culture leads to success.Key Takeaways:The Power of Soft Skills in Sales: Richard highlights the importance of using intentional language and positive reinforcement. Simple word choices—such as saying “assist” instead of “help”—can shift customer perceptions and build trust. AI’s Role in Sales & Customer Engagement: AI is a valuable tool for handling data collection and initial inquiries, but Richard emphasizes that human empathy is irreplaceable. AI should enhance conversations, while sales professionals should focus on meaningful interactions.Gamification in the Workplace: Richard incorporates arcade games and pinball machines into his call center, fostering a fun, motivating environment that boosts morale and productivity.Breaking the Sales Script: Instead of following rigid scripts, Richard trains his agents to personalize their approach—mirroring the company name when answering calls to establish immediate rapport and reduce customer resistance.Supporting Creativity & Local Arts: Beyond business, Richard is passionate about the arts, producing music videos, and collaborating with musicians, including INXS bassist Garry Gary Beers, to support creative projects.Quotes:“If you don’t land the intro, the body and conclusion don’t even exist.”“AI can fly the plane, but humans need to take off and land it.”“Gamification fosters creativity and connection—it’s more than just business.”Conclusion:Sales success isn’t just about automation—blending AI with human connection, emotional intelligence, and workplace culture. Richard Blank’s approach demonstrates that prioritizing engagement, authenticity, and strategic communication leads to stronger customer relationships and better business results.https://youtu.be/itGqGnvx2XUhttps://youtu.be/vFooCntstPchttps://youtu.be/di5mIiNXZUYhttps://youtu.be/rYIJR-Y7hoEhttps://youtu.be/T7K2cqUnhVg Hosted on Acast.
