28. Is It Depression, Anxiety...or Depletion? A Deeper Look at How Nutrition Affects Mental Health in Motherhood with Brittany Jones, MS, RD, LD
When a mother feels anxious, foggy, or not like herself postpartum, the conversation often centers around mental health — stress, sleep, hormones, or diagnosis. But what if there’s another layer that often gets overlooked? In this episode, I’m joined by registered dietitian Brittany Jones to explore postpartum depletion — and how nutrient deficiencies can sometimes mimic or amplify what feel like symptoms of anxiety or depression. This isn’t about replacing mental health care with nutrition. It’s about expanding the lens and understanding how the body and mind are deeply connected in early motherhood. We talk about what depletion actually means, why so many women are told everything is “normal” when it doesn’t feel that way, and how diet culture and the pressure to “bounce back” can contribute to under-fueling, low energy, and emotional overwhelm. This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation. In Part 2, we’ll break down specific nutrients and how they support mental and emotional well-being.In this episode:What “postpartum depletion” actually meansHow deficiencies can feel like anxiety or depressionWhy it’s not just psychological — and not just physical eitherThe impact of diet culture and under-fueling in early motherhoodA more integrated way to understand postpartum mental health Brittany Jones, MS, RD, LD, is a registered dietitian with 15 years of experience, business owner, and mom who helps women and families simplify nutrition in real life. Through her weight-inclusive, non-diet approach, she supports clients in building sustainable habits that work for their busy lives—without guilt or overwhelm. 27. Plausibility vs. Probability: Postpartum Anxiety Recovery
When you are experiencing anxiety, your mind has a way of making everything feel important. In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between something being possible and something being likely—and how anxiety tends to treat those two things as the same. When your mind believes that anything that could happen is something you need to figure out or prevent, it can pull you into cycles of overthinking, checking, and trying to get certainty. This episode will help you step out of that loop and begin to come back to what’s actually real, instead of what your mind is imagining. In This Episode:Why anxiety confuses possibility with likelihoodHow the search for certainty keeps you stuckWhy not every thought needs your attentionHow to gently return to the present momentDownload my FREE guide to understanding anxiety and intrusive thoughts in early motherhood HERE.Want more support on your journey? 26. Leona Changed Her Life: How Loss Led to Purpose and Deeper Healing with Perrin White, MSP, CCC-SLP, COM, RYT-200
This conversation is about so much more than breath and breathing. In this episode, I sit down with Perrin White — speech-language pathologist, orofacial myologist, yoga teacher, and breath coach — to explore the deeply personal journey that led her into the work she does today. What unfolds is a conversation about motherhood, grief, and what can happen when we stop trying to escape pain and begin to gently turn toward it instead.Perrin shares the story of her daughter, Leona, and how the experience of losing her became a turning point — one that invited her to question everything, reconnect with her body, and ultimately discover a path toward deeper healing. We talk about what it looks like to live with loss, to stay open when everything in you wants to shut down, and how even the most painful experiences can shape the way we care for ourselves and others. This is a conversation about grief, loss, and motherhood — including the loss of a child — and what can grow and transform as a result of that kind of deep pain.In This Episode, We Talk About:How Perrin’s personal experiences shaped the work she does todayThe connection between breath, the body, and the nervous systemWhat it means to “lean into” pain rather than avoid itThe role of rituals, symbolism, and self-connection in healing after lossLearning to listen to your body as a source of guidanceMotherhood after loss and maintaining a continued connection with a childWhy healing doesn’t follow a timeline — and doesn’t need toContact Perrin: https://www.breathewellbewell.info/Follow Perrin on Instagram @breathewellbewellPerrin offers both virtual and in-person work focused on functional breathing, airway health, and nervous system regulation. 25. When Anxiety Becomes Part of Your Identity (whether you wanted it to or not)
What if anxious thoughts don’t mean you have a disorder? In this episode, we challenge the way anxiety and intrusive thoughts are commonly understood in early motherhood, and explore how identifying with labels can create more limitation than freedom. I share a different perspective—one that can fundamentally change your relationship with your mind.In this episode, we cover:Why intrusive thoughts and anxious feelings don’t automatically indicate a disorderHow labels can initially reduce fear—but later become an identityThe difference between the presence of thoughts and your relationship to themWhy lasting change requires a shift in how you understand your mindA different way to view depression and emotional overwhelmThe role of systemic pressures on mothers—and how they shape our experiencesHow changing your perspective can create more freedom and less fearResources mentioned:Download my free guide to anxiety and intrusive thoughts in postpartum and early motherhood at susannahlongcoaching.comLearn more about my 1:1 coaching program, Motherhood Beyond Fear, through the link in the show notesIf this episode was helpful, please share it with another mom and consider leaving a review—it truly helps this work reach more womenDownload my FREE guide to understanding anxiety and intrusive thoughts in early motherhood HERE.Want more support on your journey? 24. Why Pressuring Yourself to Get Better Always Backfires (A Lesson About Anxiety From Aesop)
Why does trying harder to feel better so often make anxiety worse? In this episode, I revisit the classic Aesop’s fable The Wind and the Sun — a story I first heard years ago while watching Mad Men, and later rediscovered while reading to my daughter. While the fable is often interpreted as a lesson in persuasion, today I explore it through a different lens: healing. If you’ve ever tried to pressure yourself into calm, shame yourself for still struggling, or force intrusive thoughts to disappear, this conversation is for you. I talk about why condemning ourselves into change doesn’t create lasting results, how force actually reinforces the anxiety cycle, and what our nervous systems truly need in order to soften.Healing doesn’t happen through pressure; it happens through gentleness and acceptance. If this episode resonates and you’re ready to change your relationship with anxiety and intrusive thoughts in a deeper, more sustainable way, you can learn more about working with me inside Motherhood Beyond Fear through the link in the show notes.Resources mentioned:Download my free guide to anxiety and intrusive thoughts in postpartum and early motherhood at susannahlongcoaching.comLearn more about my 1:1 coaching program, Motherhood Beyond Fear, through the link in the show notesIf this episode was helpful, please share it with another mom and consider leaving a review—it truly helps this work reach more womenDownload my FREE guide to understanding anxiety and intrusive thoughts in early motherhood HERE.Want more support on your journey? 23. Once A Wolf, Always A Wolf: Stop Letting Your Thoughts Run Your Life
In this episode, I reflect on a story from Aesop’s Fables that I came across while reading to my daughter one night—and how it perfectly captures the way so many of us relate to our minds in early motherhood.I talk about why we don’t need calm, reassuring, or “good” thoughts in order to live a meaningful, healthy life, and how letting the mind lead—especially when it’s saying things we like—can quietly keep us stuck in fear and anxiety. This episode is an invitation to stop organizing your life around your thoughts and start making choices based on your values, even when fear or intrusive thoughts are present. In this episode, I cover:Why listening to your mind when it sounds reassuring still gives it authorityHow anxiety keeps us waiting for feelings of certainty before livingWhy values—not thoughts—are meant to guide your lifeHow to live fully even when your mind feels loudResources mentioned:Download my free guide to anxiety and intrusive thoughts in postpartum and early motherhood at susannahlongcoaching.comLearn more about my 1:1 coaching program, Motherhood Beyond Fear, through the link in the show notesIf this episode was helpful, please share it with another mom and consider leaving a review—it truly helps this work reach more womenDownload my FREE guide to understanding anxiety and intrusive thoughts in early motherhood HERE.Want more support on your journey? 22. "Just Pray About It" - The WORST Anxiety Advice Moms Hear (Part 3)
“Just pray about it” is often offered with good intentions — but when it’s used to bypass fear, emotions, or support, it can actually make anxiety worse. In this episode, we explore the difference between faith that supports healing and faith that unintentionally silences emotional experience. We talk about why anxiety and intrusive thoughts are nervous system responses — not spiritual failures — and how prayer can be integrated in a way that honors both faith and emotional honesty.Download my FREE guide to understanding anxiety and intrusive thoughts in early motherhood HERE.Want more support on your journey? 21. "Stop Overthinking It": The WORST Anxiety Advice Moms Hear (Part 2)
Being told to “stop overthinking” can feel frustrating — especially when your mind won’t stop analyzing, evaluating, replaying, and scanning for danger. But what if overthinking isn’t the real problem? What if it’s a signal pointing to something deeper? In this episode, Susannah explains why the mind gets stuck in mental loops during early motherhood, why logical solutions don’t calm emotional discomfort, and how “overthinking” is often a sign of unprocessed feelings rather than too many thoughts. You’ll learn how to recognize rumination for what it is — a safety behavior — and how to shift into choices that support genuine emotional freedom. What We Explore in This EpisodeWhy early motherhood creates the perfect storm for overthinkingHow emotional suppression fills your “internal tank” and triggers anxious thoughtsWhy the content of your worries often has nothing to do with the feelings underneathRumination as a mental safety behavior — and why it keeps you stuckHow to interrupt the rumination cycle using three simple, repeatable stepsWhy moving against fear is one of the most powerful parts of healingWhat You'll Take AwayOverthinking isn’t a character flaw or a sign that something is wrong with you — it’s a coping strategy your mind learned to use when emotions felt overwhelming or unsafe. True healing comes from reconnecting with your body, fully allowing and feeling your emotions, and choosing actions that reflect your values rather than your mind's fear.Download my FREE guide to understanding anxiety and intrusive thoughts in early motherhood HERE.Want more support on your journey? What You’ll Learn:We’ve all heard it: “Just don’t think about it.”It’s the kind of advice people give when they don’t know what else to say — but for moms struggling with anxiety or intrusive thoughts, it’s not helpful. It can actually make things worse. In this episode, I’m breaking down why “just don’t think about it” doesn’t work, what’s really happening in your brain when you try to push thoughts away, and what you can do instead. Why trying not to think about something makes it come back strongerHow the postpartum brain amplifies worry and fearWhat intrusive thoughts actually mean (and what they don’t)What’s really happening when you can’t stop thinking about somethingWhat to do instead of fighting your thoughtsKey TakeawayTrying to control your mind only keeps you stuck.Freedom comes from learning to respond differently — not from thinking less, but from no longer fearing thoughts.----------------------------------------------------------------------why can’t I stop overthinking after having a baby, how to deal with intrusive thoughts postpartum, why do I feel so anxious as a new mom, postpartum anxiety help, motherhood anxiety podcast, how to calm my racing mind after birth, intrusive thoughts motherhood, postpartum intrusive thoughts, anxiety and motherhood, mental health for new moms, why new moms worry so much, therapist for moms, anxiety coach for moms, postpartum mental health podcast, how to stop overthinking everything, what to do when you can’t stop worrying, anxiety recovery for mothers, fear after having a baby, anxious thoughts about baby safety, acceptance and commitment therapy for moms, calming postpartum anxiety, motherhood beyond fear, postpartum changed my life podcast, maternal mental health support, perinatal anxiety help, understanding postpartum intrusive thoughts, early motherhood anxiety, mom mental health support, anxiety loop postpartum, intrusive thoughts after birth

19. Beyond the Box: Why Postpartum Mental Health Screeners Miss the Mark
Have you ever filled out a postpartum screener — like the PHQ-9 or EPDS (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale)— and walked away feeling more anxious than before? You’re not alone. In this episode, Susannah Long Fowler, LMFT and early motherhood anxiety coach, explores how these widely used “check-the-box” tools can unintentionally make moms feel broken instead of supported. You’ll learn:The surprising history of these screeners (including Pharma’s role). Why the stats about their “validity” might not be as solid as they seem. The two traps moms fall into: fearing what they’re already experiencing, or fearing what they might experience. How these forms can reinforce fear around experiencing ANY emotional change - while doctors often use them to quickly screen for high-risk patients.Takeaway: Nothing is wrong with you for struggling during one of life’s biggest transitions. 18. Raising Our Children in a Broken World: School Shootings, the Assassination of Charlie Kirk, and the State of Mental Health in Our Country
In this episode, I reflect on the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the rise of political violence in America, and the tragedies of recent school shootings in 2025 that have left many of us grieving and afraid. As mothers, we’re asking how to raise resilient kids in a broken world, how to navigate motherhood and fear, and how to parent through tragedy without being consumed by anxiety. Together we’ll talk about faith and mental health, the spiritual crisis in America, and why choosing hope, God’s presence, and courage over fear can shape not only our mental wellness but the future of our children.Over the past couple of weeks, our country has been shaken by tragedy after tragedy — from school shootings to public acts of violence, and most recently, the assassination of Charlie Kirk.In this episode:Why these events reveal something deeper than politics — a spiritual and moral illness in our culture. The role of fear and lack of spirituality in fueling violence and despair. What we can learn from Charlie Kirk’s courage to speak boldly, even in the face of extreme opposition, whether you agreed with his politics or not.How to sit with the very real fear so many moms are carrying right now — and how to shift that fear into faith and resilience. Why healing ultimately begins within yourself and in your home, and how mothers play a vital role in raising children who value life. This is not an easy episode, but it’s an important one. We’re going to talk about some hard things, and we’re going to talk about hope — because that always exists. My prayer is that you leave this episode grounded, comforted, and reminded that every act of love you bring into your home matters.Download my FREE guide to understanding anxiety and intrusive thoughts in early motherhood HERE.Want more support on your journey? 15. Motherhood Is A Spiritual Path with Katie Lakvold
In this episode, I’m joined by Katie Lakvold of @gracefilled_ministries, the creator of the Grace-Filled Postpartum Journal. Katie opens up about her own postpartum journeys—the joys, the grief, and the unexpected moments of spiritual growth that followed. Together, we explore how God uses the tender, raw, and often overwhelming experiences of early motherhood to refine us, stretch us, and begin healing the parts of us that we didn't even know were wounded. This is a conversation for any mom who’s ever asked, “Why is this so hard? Why is this happening to me?” and “Where is God in this?” You’ll leave feeling less alone—and maybe even with a more empowered perspective - one that will enable you to stay in courage and move forward trusting that a newer, brighter, more healed version of you is already unfolding. In this episode, we discuss:Katie’s postpartum experiences and how they shaped her faithThe creation of the Grace Filled Postpartum JournalWhy motherhood is not a detour from spiritual growth—but the path itselfHow God uses our challenging and painful postpartum experiences for deeper healing and transformationThe invitation to surrender, rest, and receive grace in motherhoodDownload my FREE guide to understanding anxiety and intrusive thoughts in early motherhood HERE.Resources Mentioned:Grace Filled MinistriesGrace -Filled Postpartum Journal Connect with Katie:Instagram: @gracefilled_ministriesKatie's BioKatie Lakvold is a devoted wife, mother of four (including twins), and the founder of Grace-Filled Ministries. Drawing from her own diverse postpartum journeys—an emergency cesarean, a successful VBAC, and a twin pregnancy that pushed her beyond expectations—Katie understands the complexities and challenges new mothers face. Her experiences revealed a universal truth: moms often say they’re “fine” even when they struggle to recognize their own needs. This realization inspired her to create The Grace-Filled Postpartum Journal, a 12-month well-being journal designed to help new and seasoned moms track their mental, emotional, and spiritual health with simplicity and grace.Through her work, Katie seeks to remind mothers that they are seen, loved, and never alone—especially by our loving and gracious Heavenly Father. She hopes her journal will nurture self-awareness and self-advocacy in a season often defined by exhaustion and isolation, offering mothers a lasting resource for reflection and a reminder of the beauty and strength found in motherhood.Want more support on your journey? 11. This is WHY motherhood can feel SO overwhelming!
Ever wonder why being home with a baby - something that looks so simple from the outside - can feel overwhelmingly complex and challenging? In this episode, we dive deep into one of motherhood's greatest paradoxes: how the seemingly small, confined world of early motherhood actually contains some of life's most profound and transformative work.We explore why feeding, rocking, and soothing your baby carries such emotional weight, and how these repetitive daily moments are actually shaping both you and your child in ways that extend far beyond the nursery walls.
