Episode 350: Armageddon Unboxed!
We now know what's in the box! The full contents of Armageddon have been revealed, and we have thoughts. In part one, we go through all the contents and discuss what's included, what's not included, the surprises, and which faction got the best minis (spoiler - it's the Orks). Then, in part two, we dig through the first week of Faction Focuses, look at the new detachments for 6 different armies, and see if we can figure out how much the edition is changing from the bits of info inside. Episode 349: The Return of Yarrick
The reports of his death were only slightly exaggerated, but Commissar Yarrick has returned! In this episode, we take a look at the new Return of Yarrick narrative supplement, as well as the Armoured Gauntlet rules supplement. Has Yarrick arrived just in time to save Armageddon again? And will we get a kit for his custom Baneblade? Are the expanded vehicle rules too little, too much, or just right? And of all the narrative supplements, which one is our favorite? Also, we work through the various 11th Edition rules reveals and try to piece together what this means for how the game will play and how it might affect your armies! Episode 1: Let's Get Started! (15th Anniversary Re-release)
15 years ago today, we released our first episode on the internet. That's been 350 episodes ago, and we've come a long way since then, but every journey starts with a single step. That inaugural episode was all about getting started! Rob, Dennis, Richard, and original host Jon tackled the subject of how to get started in Warhammer 40K. We discussed how we got started in the game, and various aspects of getting into the game for the first time - picking an army, getting the minis, and learning to play. Things were vaguely complicated by recording during a thunderstorm, but we managed to hit all the bases without getting electrocuted. The equipment was primitive, and the sound quality is rough, but everything that came after is because of this little episode. Episode 348: Adepticon and Apocalypse
It's time to talk big things, with big reveals, big changes, and big battles! In part one, we talk about all the Adepticon reveals, from the return to Armageddon (again) to the reveal of 11th Edition and all the changes it entails. It's not a complete reset, but it is going to shake things up massively! Then, in part two, we delve into the new Reign of Iron book and its version of Apocalypse, the 40K format for massive games with many thousands of points per side. How does this toolbox version compare to the Apocalypse games of days past? And why is it the ultimate guide in how to run large events? Listen to find out! (April Fools) 11th Edition - the Fool Rules Revealed
11th Edition was officially announced at Adepticon, but details on the rules changes are still sketchy - until now! In a seemingly-unlikely series of events, what appears to be a legitimate copy of the text of the next edition has made its way into our hands. With that, it's time to peel back the curtain and discover what changes are on the way for the next edition. We'd be fools not to give you the 4-1-1 on all the details, so strap in - two hours of an 11th Edition deep dive await (well, give or take 90 minutes)! Episode 346: Catching Up with Products and Pirates
There's been a lot to cover over the past couple of weeks, and it's time to play a bit of catching up with news and new releases. With the upcoming return of Apocalypse, a new class of Knight, a new trio of character datasheets, and a balance dataslate of sorts, we've got a lot to discuss in part one. Then, in part two, we talk about the part of The Maelstrom we didn't discuss in our review - the detachments! Episode 345: Predicting 11th Edition
It's no secret that the next edition of Warhammer 40K is coming later this year, but what is currently secret is how it'll change the game. In this episode, we break out our crystal ball, analyze current trends, and make our best guesses as to what may or may not change in 11th Edition. Will the edition be a massive rewrite? Will the rules go fully digital? Will we get the Psychic phase back? Will we lose or gain any factions? Will Orks still be krumpin'? We try to figure out all this and more! Episode 344: 500 Worlds and The Maelstrom
It's time for a narrative review double-header! As the end of Tenth Edition draws closer, Games Workshop is rolling out narrative sets to highlight some of the hotspots in the galaxy, and in this episode, we look at the first two releases. In part one, we delve into the 500 Worlds set, featuring the Ultramarines trying to reclaim the lost worlds of Ultramar, as well as a sprawling map-based campaign system. Does this sector-wide campaign system scratch the itch for high-level strategic play, or is it too complex for the average group? Then, in part two, we dive headfirst into The Maelstrom, home of the pirate tyrant Huron Blackheart and his Red Corsairs. How does its notoriety-focus campaign compare to the 500 Worlds system? And does the Crucible of Champions answer all our prayers for opening up a toybox of character options? Listen to find out! Episode 340: Faction Focus - Space Marines
It's time to kick off our Faction Focus series with a look at the most iconic force in Warhammer 40,000 - the Space Marines. If you've seen anything about Warhammer, you're probably familiar with Space Marines, but what exactly are they? Where do they come from, lore-wise? Why are they the most well-rounded force in the game? And how many different armies are built off of the framework of one codex? In this episode, we take a look at the history, the gameplay styles, and the various variants of the Adeptus Astartes. Also, a brief discussion of the World Championships Warhammer preview, and the different experiences those of us at home had compared to those of us at the event in person. The lords of war have led their factions, the stories are told, the armies are packed away - and now it's time for our coverage! Kevin and Dennis were at the Warhammer 40K Grand Narrative in Atlanta, and they've got their own tales to tell. For the first time, they're both on the same side, playing the same faction, and in the same battle group. Listen to our hosts' tales from Battlegroup 16 as they take their Leagues of Votann armies across the webway to various battlefields, get into discussions of logic versus faith, face off against some tabletop titans, and learn the hazards of finishing an army without doing any playthroughs first! Episode 336: The History of Characters and the Character Encyclopedia
If there’s one thing that Warhammer 40,000 is loaded with, it’s unique characters who are often pivotal to the story. But how have those characters been reflected on the tabletop? In this episode, inspired by the new Warhammer 40,000 Character Encyclopedia, we dive into all things character-related! In part one, we look back at the history for rules for characters, especially special named characters from Rogue Trader through 10th Edition. Then, in part two, we look into the Encyclopedia and each pick five of our favorite characters. In this episode, we delve into the new Drukhari codex, to see what the dark spiky cousins of the Aeldari are bringing in their new book. How is Power from Pain getting reworked? Who made the cut into the codex and who didn’t? Why did every single unit get an update? And which detachments bring their particularly poisonous flavor to the tabletop? We delve into the new codex, examine the changes between it and the index, and talk through the new detachments included. Did they somehow make Code Chivalric even better? Does the Knight Defender do what it says on the tin? Did they tone down the most pushed knights? Is it worth it to fight over a line in the sand? And can this book make people who don’t care for knights want to play them? Also, we make a brief dive into Kill Team as Rob reviews the new Tomb World box! With 12 more codexes, 2 more narrative campaign books, a new tournament mission pack, 30 extra detachments, and 4 quarterly balance updates released since last time, there’s a lot of change. Has the game continued on a solid trajectory? Is faction balance still steady? Is the game’s streamlining delivering the increased ease and speed of play? Are the new Space Wolf terminators worthy of the tabletop? Are Wulfen swinging for the fences again? And how much difference does a chapter keyword make? We discuss this and more! Also, a look at the new Chapter Approved mission deck, with its anticipated Asymmetric missions and Challenger cards. Episode 325: 10th Edition Thousand Sons
Just as planned, the last of the four god-specific legions has made their appearance! In this episode, we delve into the new 10th edition codex for the Thousand Sons, the masters of chaotic magic. In an edition where psychic powers aren’t really a thing, how has Games Workshop made a psychic army function? How will the new version of Cabal of Sorcerers change things up for Thousand Sons players? Are Sekhetar Robots the new hotness, or an odd add-on? How do daemons play in the new book? And which detachments do we see having the most potential? And did Magnus, in fact, do anything wrong? Listen to find out! Episode 324: 10th Edition Death Guard and World Eaters
The Year of Chaos is now in full swing, with not one, but two Chaos codexes dropping simultaneously! In this episode, we dive into the new Death Guard and World Eaters codexes. In part one, it’s Nurgle time, as we pick through plagues with the Death Guard. Has their contagion-based army rule changed? Are they finally tough enough to justify their bloat? And how many poxwalkers is actually enough? Then, in part two, it’s time for skulls and blood with the World Eaters. Can you still win at the casino of Khorne? Is the return of Khorne Daemonkin all that Kevin was waiting for? And what’s the most useless unit in the World Eaters codex? Strap yourselves in as we tackle a double-codex review! Episode 323: The Adepticon 2025 Previews
Adepticon has come and gone, and it brought a new set of Warhammer previews! Games Workshop gave us a little bit of everything, from an army for the Old World never before seen on the tabletop, to a new pair of Kill Teams duking it out, to several 40K army updates, to a brand new Crusade book! We dig into the reveals, and give our thoughts – what’s the thing that got us most excited, and what’s the most polished turd of the bunch? Also, a head’s up – we start off with an unhappy but necessary discussion of the new tariffs and what impact that might have on our hobbies and the places we buy them from. We’re not going to let that dampen our excitement for what’s coming, though! (Tariffs talk is between 1:58 and 18:50, for those of you who’d like to skip it.) It’s a new quarter, and that means a new set of balance updates – but that’s not all! In this episode, we discuss several changes and new options that GW has delivered. We start off discussing the new Aspects of War series in White Dwarf and the first installment’s stratagem replacements. Next, we dive into the new Balance Dataslate and look at the changes and corrections that various factions are getting to bump them up or bring them down a bit. Finally, we look at the first batch of quarterly detachment releases, with new options for Adeptus Custodes, T’au, and the Orks! Episode 321: Crusade – Nachmund Gauntlet
The next Crusade book is upon us, and it’s time to return to the Nachmund Gauntlet! In past editions, the fighting was mostly focused on Vigilus, but this time around, GW is focusing on Sangua Terra at the other end of the Gauntlet. In this episode, we take a look at the new Crusade book and discuss its narrative, its campaign system, and its specific Crusade rules. Does the Imperium come out on top this time? Is this the most complex campaign system GW has created for 10th edition? Should surgical deep strikes be a core rule in the game? We take a look at all this and more, as well as some news regarding some major tournament changes! Then, it’s time to delve into the codex, as we run through the new army rule, the new units, and all six of their detachments. Episode 319: A Bit of Random Hobby Discussion
We’re between releases and down a host (for a good reason!), so why not take some time to catch up with what we’ve got going on? First, our thoughts on the new special ultra edition of the upcoming Chaos legion codexes, then onto a discussion about The Old World and how it might just be the most accessible army-scale game that GW is putting out right now. Next, some hobby progress, including fixing some pants and Rob’s first game of Age of Sigmar. Finally, a discussion on how to get the hobby experience you want, and a bit about the Gaunt’s Ghosts series. It’s no one thing, but it’s a little bit of everything! Episode 312: Vehicles in 40K, Then and Now
In our last episode, we discussed old mechanics from 40K’s history. This time, we’re focusing on one specific aspect of the game – vehicles. From the days of Third Edition with armor facings and penetration rolls, to glance-locking vehicles in Fifth Edition, to the introduction of Flyers in Sixth Edition, all the way through the Eighth and Tenth Edition reboots, we delve into the history of tanks and transports and such. We also look at how vehicles are (and possibly aren’t) working in Tenth Edition, where we think any issues might lie, and whether or not Games Workshop is likely to do much about it. We also take a small tangent to look at holiday bundle sales and what that might mean for how people are approaching this year’s collections. Episode 311: Mechanics We Miss and Mechanics We Don’t
In this episode, we take a look back through previous editions and examine game mechanics that aren’t in 10th Edition anymore. Which ones do are we sad to see gone, and which ones are we glad to see gone? Thanks to our very rigorous and scientific methods – there are number ratings and everything – we’ve narrowed the field down to our top and bottom six, along with some others where we had very conflicting opinions. We look at the five new holiday battleforce boxes, take a brief stop in Kill Team Land to look at some Ratlings and Tankbustas, and have a number of tangents including the new version of Underworlds, the price of hobby tools, and another company’s answer to an army builder subscription. Episode 309: A Show About Nothing
For once, we don’t have a new codex to review or a reveal to discuss, so it’s time to go off-schedule and just talk about nothing – and anything. We start off with our impressions of Space Marine 2, both positive and negative, move on to the new Kill Team release, have a small digression to talk about time, and then finish up with something we haven’t done in a while – hobby progress! Episode 308: Roadmaps and Monkey Paws
The NoVA Open Roadmap presentation came and went and… we have thoughts. We look at what was promised, what was delivered, and what wasn’t delivered. What are the possible implications of this upcoming release schedule, and what would we have done differently? Afterwards, we look at the various things that have been asked for since the early days of the podcast back in 5th Edition – more frequent codex releases, more errata, better and more standardized missions, and more playable factions – and ask: did we get what we asked for, and if so, is it really what we wanted? Were these just the wargaming equivalent of a monkey’s paw wish, and if so, what were the costs of getting what we wanted? Episode 307: 10th Edition Blood Angels
We’re off the roadmap now, and a new codex is upon us! In this episode, we take a look at the upcoming Blood Angels codex supplement to determine how well the sons of Sanguinius survived the shift from index to codex. Do the new detachments serve up an appropriately Blood Angels-ish experience? Did the Sanguinary Guard get anything in exchange for their nipples? And who didn’t make it into the final book? Episode 306: 10th Edition Imperial Agents and Boarding Actions Double Review
Two books dropped on the same weekend, and we decided to tackle them both at once this time! In part one, we take a look at the new Imperial Agents codex. This mashup was much maligned by us in its past incarnations, so does this version fare any better? Is it a viable book? Do the Imperial Agents work as an army? And what does this mean for the Deathwatch? Meanwhile, in part two, we delve into the tome that is the Boarding Actions Compendium. The Arks of Omen books brought us this new format last year, and we’ve had a PDF patch to make it playable, but how does this full update to 10th edition look? And how many options does it give you to play this format? Episode 305: Tenth Edition’s First Year Gradecard
It’s been just about a year since we graded 10th Edition Warhammer 40K to determine how well it delivered on its promises after launch. Well, 12 months, 11 codexes, 2 narrative campaign books, and 2 tournament mission packs later, it’s time to see where they’ve improved and where they’ve faltered. Has faction balance recovered from its dismal state at the game’s launch? Is the game still “simplified, not simple”? Have codexes delivered quality rules without bogging the game down with too much cruft? And is the game still accessible, both to new players and to veteran wargamers? It’s time to dig in and see! Episode 304: Narrative Play with Chris Stover
It’s time to talk narrative play! In this episode, we’re joined by Chris Stover, organizer of Narrative events at the NOVA Open. You might recognize him from last year’s Grand Narrative coverage, but he’s more than a chaos cultist cosplayer; he’s the person behind one of the biggest narrative Warhammer 40K events in the country! We talk with Chris about what it’s like to organize and run such a large event, what’s happened in the NOVA Open narrative story over the last couple of years, what he’s learned along the way, and why there shouldn’t be a huge gulf between narrative and competitive players! The second episode of our Religious Codex Double-Feature is here, and this time we delve into the undercities of the Imperium to take a look at the Genestealer Cults. How did these half-human, half-alien hybrids get here? Will the Star Children truly save them? And how did they handle the transition from index to codex? We try to untangle their plans and figure out how they stack up, especially compared to their opposites in devotion, the Sisters of Battle. Also, we examine the changes from the June Balance Dataslate and rules update, and try to answer the question: are we even playing the same edition we were playing a year ago?
