Episode 38 - Elementary Students Training as First Responders in Pharr, Texas
In this inspiring episode, we spotlight the innovative work taking place at Escobar Elementary in Pharr, Texas, where 4th and 5th grade students are training as future first responders through the Escobar Mini Tech Club. These students are earning their Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association, the same certification required for healthcare professionals to practice in their fields. Science Teacher and certified AHA Instructor Sebastian Tijerina joins us alongside his student, Landon Arriaga, to share what it means to gain professional-level emergency response training at such a young age. Episode 37 - Helping Parents Rise Through Free Learning Opportunities
Free college classes. Free entrepreneurial training. Industry certifications. Real opportunities for parents to grow. In this episode of the PSJA Tri-City Talks Podcast, we explore how Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD is expanding opportunity beyond the classroom by investing directly in parents through its Community Engagement model. Designed to increase parent involvement and strengthen the connection between families, schools, and community partners, PSJA ISD’s Community Engagement Department provides continuing education and workforce pathways for all parents of current PSJA students. Through these programs, parents can enroll in college courses, receive support completing FAFSA and TASFA applications, learn valuable skills and trades, earn industry certifications, and explore entrepreneurship opportunities. Participation is open to all PSJA parents, regardless of home language or status. In return, parents commit to volunteering at least 15 hours per semester at their child’s campus, reinforcing the powerful partnership between home and school. With nine locations across the district, families have accessible pathways to growth and advancement. The PSJA Elvis Ballew Learning Center serves as a key hub within this broader Community Engagement initiative, helping parents continue their education, build confidence, become informed advocates for their children, and serve as strong role models within their families. When parents are empowered, students are inspired.Discover how PSJA ISD is strengthening families, improving student achievement, and creating Opportunities for All through meaningful community engagement.
