Retro House Mixtape

‘Retro House Mixtape’ is exactly that; an online mixtape of house music picked from the dusty corners of my record collection. The plan is to pick out the kind of house tunes that you don’t hear so much of these days. That said, the occasional big tune or cheeky bootleg does sneak in from time to time. Mixed by Bournemouth based House DJ ‘Munkeycop’ (aka Paul), a DJ with 20+ years of experience performing in bars and clubs across the South West of England. Hosted on Acast. Episode 125 - What You Want

It's a 90's tune fest in this episode of Retro House Mixtape. Everything here is from that sweet spot between '96 and '99. There's chunky bass-led garagey rhythms, stompy disco house and some outright all-timer anthems going on in this mix.Find the full tracklist on retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. Episode 124 - Good Life

From top to bottom, there's some lovely old 90's house tunes going on in this episodeStarting with the all-time classic "Good Life" by Inner City, remixed by Nu-Birth giving it that late 90's London-garage flava. Loving the final tune as well, super-producer Stonebridge with a disco-tinged thumper called "Calling". Hope you like this one. Episode 123 - Music : Response

Once again we venture into a mix of lovely old house music.I tend to do a little bit of planning ahead when it comes to making these episodes. I like to have some kind of a theme or direction in place before I make a start. For this episode however it was a case of "sod it, let's just bung together a bunch of tunes that I like". And that's exactly what we have here.A good few big names on this episode. A favourite of mine is the Futureshock remix of "Music : Response" by The Chemical Brothers. Check out the whole tracklisting on my website - retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. Episode 122 - As We Step

Join us as we step into another bout of house music.Fun little story about the opening track “Bad Things” by Njoi. I bought this back when it came out in 1995 but for some reason I sold it as part of a big clear out prior to moving to Bournemouth in 1999. Fast forward to a year ago, this track randomly popped into my head. I was then immediately kicking myself having sold my copy of it all those years ago. Less than 48 hours later I’m in town with a little time to kill. I pop into a charity shop (I’m obsessed with picking up second hand cd’s) and sitting there in the vinyl rack was this very record. What are the odds? I couldn’t believe it! In excellent condition and only £4. I snapped it straight up. Glad to have it back in my collection.I was bouncing around the room whilst putting this together. I like how it flips halfway through from a clubby vibe into more disco-edged grooves. AS usual it's mostly retro house jams but there's also a cheeky addition of 'As We Step' by the Audio Bullys, a more recent tune that is dripping with retro vibes.Check the set track list via - retrohousemixtape.com - where you can also leave a tip!Episodes of Retro House Mixtape are also on wegetliftedradio.com Tuesdays at 4pm UK time. Episode 121 - Loops of Life

After the love-fest from the previous episode we are back down to clubby business for episode 121 of Retro House Mixtape. Starting off with an acappella combo that I recently discovered by chance, it's a sublime mix between the work of King Unique and the vocal from "Someday" by CeCe Rogers. It's a clubby first half including "Loops of Life", a favourite of mine that I remember picking up from BangBang record shop in Bristol. From there the mix transitions into funkier territory bouncing between disco vibes and 80's-esque house from Fred Falke. For the final track we end up in the familiar company of the Rhythm Masters as they remix 'Jus' Come' by Cool Jack. Hope you enjoy this one.FInd me on Threads, Instagram and Bluesky via @retrohousemixtape or check out retrohousemixtape.com for tracklists and other good stuff.  Hosted on Acast. Episode 120 - The Word is Love

Seeing as this episode releases over Valentine's weekend I thought I would put together a "love themed" episode. Every track in this 60-minute mix references LOVE in some way or another. It unexpectedly ended up being a mix that works through various flavours of house. We start in the early 90's with some piano house anthems, drop into some mid-90's epic house, slide into some filtered disco thumpers and then finish on a soulful vocal house tip. Check out the full tracklisting on my website. You can also stream the episode in high quality audio on Mixcloud. Big love to you all! :) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  7. 45

Episode 119 - Bring It On Down

I felt like dipping into more disco-tinged territory for this mixtape after the trance and stompin' house shenanigans of the previous episode. For this mixtape we kick things off with a disco-dub remix by the legendary François Kevorkian. At the same time I also have a bit of fun by playing around with the vocal from "Anytime" by Nu-Birth to create something new and interesting. From there we flow through some tasty disco house grooves before ending up with the classic "Bring it on Down" by Wildchild. I enjoyed putting this one together. If you also enjoy it do please give the mix a like or a comment on Mixcloud. Every little click nudges that algorithm along and helps me tremendously. Cheers. Check out my website retrohousemixtape.com where you can find all my episodes (even the ones Mixcloud won't allow on here). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 118 - Back Once Again

Well hello there. It truly has been a while hasn't it? So yeah, I've been away doing a thing with making music (something I've been mucking about with since the late 90's) and that's been a bit of fun. But over the last few months I've had the itch to record a new mixtape and come back to this project. And so here we are. A new mixtape to kick off a string of new episodes coming out in 2026. This one starts off big and dramatic with an anthem from the rave-era. From there we move through to some classic trance tracks, dip into some melodic late-90's trance and finish up with a stompin' mid-90's house vibe. The plan is to release a new mixtape every other week, most likely on Fridays. So keep an eye out for when those new episodes go live.Don't forget to check out my newly re-designed website at retrohousemixtape.com or look up retrohousemixtape on Instagram and Threads.BTW - A high quality audio version of this episode is available on Mixcloud Hosted on Acast. Episode 117 - A Random Surprise Mix

Hello there. How have you been? It's been a while hasn't it? I haven't dropped a new episode of Retro House Mixtape since before Christmas 2021. I've been on a bit of a break (and I kinda still am) but I had some time to throw a mix together this week so I figured "why not?". Get stuck in to some disco grooves, clubby shufflers and a few stone cold favourites of mine. Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 116 - The Third (and final) Speed Garage Mixtape

Boom! Out of the blue it's another episode of Retro House Mixtape and this week it's another 'Speed Garage' set. It's probably the last Speed Garage mixtape as I've pretty much burned through all the stand out SG tracks in my collection. Don't forget to check my blog for the full track listing - retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  11. 41

Episode 115 - Retro House Bangers

Oi Oi! Sorry it's been a while since the last episode but I've now got a new mix all ready to go. It's a set of tidy bangers, kicking off with some funky, garagey vibes before sliding into something a bit more driving and heavy. Hope you like it! 12. 40

Episode 114 - Fatboy Slim 25th Anniversary Mix

It's been 25 years this week since Norman Cook put out the Fatboy Slim debut album 'Better Living Through Chemistry'. I thought it would be interesting to put together a mix based on the tracks from the album. Not just a normal mix though, I've been diving into the tracks themselves to pull out loops and samples which are sprinkled through this DJ set. It's a little chaotic but then again that seems on theme when you're talking about Fatboy Slim.   Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  13. 39

Episode 113 - Right Here, Right Now

I'm totally switching things up for this episode of Retro House Mixtape as we ditch the retro and dive into a mix of upfront house tunes. This is a mix of three parts as we journey from the bar, to the club and then end up with our hands in the air at the festival.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  14. 38

Episode 112 - Bank Holiday House Party

I'm tapping into a funkier vein of House Music for this episode. Things kick off with a new release from Dave Lee and Horse Meat Disco. I'm very much breaking my own 'Retro House' rules here but this is a classy, timeless sounding tune and I couldn't resist. I also managed to finish with a classic from Frankie Knuckles which was apt seeing as it was recently Frankie Knuckles Day. Happy Frankie Knuckles Day everyone! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  15. 37

Episode 111 - Bournemouth Summer Jam

Seeing as it's August it felt like a good time to throw together some summer-tinged house tunes. Fitting in with the summer theme, it's worth noting the background image used in the cover artwork. It's a photo I took of lovely Bournemouth beach, just a stone's throw away from where I live (technically a stone throw and a half but you get the idea). Hosted on Acast. 16. 36

Episode 110 - Retro TRANCE Mixtape

It's time to switch things up on Retro House Mixtape with a new episode based round late 90's/early 2000's Trance bangers. Check it out for some hugely euphoric screamers that will undoubtedly lift your spirits.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  17. 35

Episode 109 - Third Year Anniversary Mix

Retro House Mixtape is three years old! (give or take a day or two). Over the last three years that's a total of 2000+ online followers, clocking up 10,000+ listens over 109 episodes totalling approximately 5 days worth of recorded mixes. Whether you're a long time follower or a new listener dropping in for the first time, thanks for checking out and supporting the show. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

    Episode 108

Hey there! Thanks for tuning in to another episode of Retro House Mixtape. I have another killer selection of house tunes for you both old and new (well, almost new). Hopefully you'll find a couple of decent jams in there that will pick your ears up. Don't forget to follow me on Twitter via @RetroHouseMix or on Instagram via @RetroHouseMixtape.  Hosted on Acast. 19. 33

Episode 107 - The Whisky Session

I initially didn't feel like putting a mix together this week but after sinking a few whiskey's and jumping on the decks the tunes soon started flowing. In the end I'm pretty happy with the results.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  20. 32

    Episode 106 - Early 90's Mixtape

I felt like throwing together an early 90’s set this week. The original plan was that it would be a set of early 90’s funky U.S. Garage but things kinda got away from me. Along the way things morphed into a bit of a rave vibe (playing Energy Flash right at the end was a particular joy). I’m thinking of doing an old skool rave set at some point so this was something of a warm up. Find the track listing on my blog - retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. Episode 105 - One From The Archive

I almost bailed on recording an episode this week as I was a bit under the weather but at the last minute I stumbled across an old archive of mixes and dug this out from April 2010. There's some good stuff in here that I totally forgot about.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  22. 30

Episode 104 - Ten Years Earlier

For this episode of Retro House Mixtape we take a trip back to approximately ten years ago, roughly around the 2009/2010 mark. Around this time house music was going through a bit of an electronica phase and that's what this mixtape is packed full of.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  23. 29

Episode 103 - Good Vibrations House Mix

With the Easter weekend done and dusted it felt like a good time to throw together a few tunes with a summer kinda vibe to them. Warmer days are coming and soon we'll be able to go outside and actually see friends face to face. When you do, make sure to stick this mixtape on as you soak up the sunshine. Good times are on their way.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  24. 28

Episode 102 - Good Friday House Vibes

It's one of the best best weekends of the year, the four day Easter weekend! And I have a great episode of Retro House Mixtape for you to enjoy. Funky house, twisted disco licks and big bassline bangers are all on the menu in this tasty selection. Check my blog - retrohousemixtape.com for the full track listing Hosted on Acast. Episode 101 - Back From A Break

Aaaaaaaand we're back. After a few months off it's time for some new episodes of Retro House Mixtape. I'm kinda rebooting things a little bit. Previously I've avoided playing tracks more than once but after 100 episodes I think it's time to relax that rule a little bit and break out some tunes that deserve another dusting off. If you're new to the show don't forget to check out my previous mixes for more Retro House goodness. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

    Episode 99 - Back to '99 Mix

It's the final step in our trip through the 90's as we dive into the crazy year of 1999. A year when funky disco licks and euphoric trance ruled the house roost. Turn it on and turn it up! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  28. 24

    Episode 98 - Back to '98 Mix

As per the last few episodes we move another year further into the 90's and it's a mix of two halves which very much reflects my record buying habits of 1998. It was mostly either funky/disco house or more trancey based fare. There are some cracking retro house tunes in this set.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  29. 23

    Episode 97 - Back to '97 Mix

1997 was a huge year for House Music. Big tunes were dominating the dance floors before dominating the airwaves on radio and tv. This episode is a mix of huge tunes and some lesser known bangers from 1997.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  30. 22

    Episode 96 - Back to '96 Mix

It's another trip back to the 90's as we bounce back into 1996. Episode 95 - Back to '95 Mix

It's another trip back to the 90's as we head into the mid-decade decadence of 1995. The year when I started DJing on the regular in various bars and clubs in the town where I grew up. It was certainly an exciting year for the 17-year-old me.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

    Episode 94 - Back to '94 Mix

Episode 93 - Summer Vibes Mixtape

It's gearing up to be a crazy hot weekend here in the UK so here is a mixtape to compliment the weather. It starts on a Balearic tip before going into a funky summery vibe and climaxes in a full-on carnival.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  34. 18

    Episode 92

It's a shorter episode than usual this week but that doesn't mean you're missing out on much. There's nearly as many tunes packed into this set as there are in a normal length episode.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  35. 17

    Episode 91

I had an idea for a themed episode but I just couldn't make it work. This episode has ended up being one of those 'last minute' ventures as a result. I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out either way. Full track listing on my blog - retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 90 - The Basement Jaxx Mixx

For this week's episode I have dug through my archive of old mixes and pulled out this set from 2009 consisting of Basement Jaxx goodies. This mix (performed on vinyl) includes tunes by the band, remixes they have done and a few remixes of their tracks by other people. Episode 89

Some big tunes and remixes in this week's episode. Just the ticket to help you through another week of Corona-season. There are also a couple more tasty acappella mash-ups to keep things interesting.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  38. 14

Episode 88 - The Breakbeat Mixtape

It's a very different episode this week thanks to an old Instagram post from last year. I posted about a compilation that I had picked up called 'House Breaks Sessions' and I commented on doing a Breakbeat Mixtape at some point. A friend of mine, James from The Freefall Collective, promptly lent me a bunch of tunes to put together for an episode. Lots of breaks and big basslines in this ep! Hosted on Acast. Episode 87 - 2nd Year Anniversary Show

Retro House Mixtape is two years old! Two whole years since I first came up with the idea for the show. How the time flies! Thanks to everyone who has been along for the ride and shown their support during this time. This week's show is a slightly extended episode with some up-for it tunes. It's a bit of a cracker!  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  40. 12

    Episode 86

Time for another fix of House Music from the corners of my record collection (and hard drive). It's a more clubbier selection compared to last week (do check out the previous episode, it's packed with uplifting tunes) with some funky accapella re-works thrown in too. Hosted on Acast. 41. 11

    Episode 85

What a week it has been! There is justified unrest going on right now and I felt like putting a few tunes together to reflect that and hopefully put across a positive message at the same time. Hope you enjoy it. Full track listing will be up on the blog - retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  42. 10

    Episode 84

Are you ready for another trip into some old skool house? I've got you covered with this episode consisting of some tasty tunes from the late 90's and early 2000's. I've been messing around with acappellas a bit more than usual this week. There's a tasty SL2 / Basement Jaxx mash-up that I might put out on Soundcloud at some point so keep an eye out for that.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  43. 9

    Episode 83 - Disco's Revenge

Frankie Knuckles once said that House Music was Disco’s Revenge. That statement was the basis for this week’s episode. I wanted to record an episode that runs at a slightly lower tempo and works as a warmup mixtape. The kind of set that would fit perfectly for that late afternoon/early evening slot on a sunny day. This episode starts with an old Royksopp/Incognito bootleg that I made in the early 2000’s (I really should make an updated version) before swerving into a full on disco re-edit session. There are some irresistibly funky jams going on in this episode. I really enjoyed putting this one together. Hope you like it too.For the full track listing head over to the blog - retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 82 - A Random House Music Journey

Hey there! Hope you are doing well and staying sane during the on-going lockdown. It's a different approach to this episode as I pick out a random track from the collection and start building a set from there (as opposed to the usual planning that happens ahead of time). It makes for an interesting episode with some long mixes and contrasting track choices. Hope you enjoy it. Episode 81

Welcome along to another episode of Retro House Mixtape, back from a cheeky little week off. In case you missed it, there was a free download available last week to fill the gap, a bootleg that I made featuring a Destiny's Child vocal over a deep house track. Yes, it sounds weird but do check it out on the blog. On to this week's episode, its an up-for-it selection of bangers taking in house classics, disco-tinged vibes and straight up synth-laced trance shenanigans. A real-mash up of styles. Drop by the blog for a track listing. You can support Retro House Mixtape via either Patreon or Ko-Fi with a donation as little as 1 dollar. Whoops! I’m a bit late on getting this post uploaded to the blog. This episode first went out almost a week ago! This episode is a more deeper, ‘head-down’ affair. Welcome along to another episode of Retro House Mixtape. Episode 76 – ‘End of 2019’ Special Extended Episode

Aaaaaaand here it is. The final episode of Retro House Mixtape for 2019. Last year I did an extended ‘Big Fat End of 2018‘ episode and for this year it’s another bumper set of bangers from years gone by that will fire up any Festive/New Years party that you might be having. There are also a few new tunes I’ve picked up along the way this year and some exclusive accapella mash-ups that you won’t hear anywhere else (check out the tracklisting at retrohousemixtape.com). In other news, Retro House Mixtape is taking a little hiatus for a few months. Yep, after 76 weekly episodes I decided that the end of 2019 was a good time to take a short break from doing the show. Some quick nods before I go; A big shout out to the team at beach-radio.co.uk, thanks for making me part of the team in 2019. It’s been awesome putting a show together every week for the station. Cheers to the guys at OMG and to everyone on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook who has supported the show. I’ve got some other posts planned for over the festive season so make sure you follow my social media accounts in order to catch them.Right! I’m off to do a house move (that’s not a dancing term, I’m literally moving house hence the need for a break) I will see you on the other side. Big thanks for dropping by the blog. I very much hope you have a Merry Christmas and an awesome New Year. Cheers! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

ABOUT THIS SHOW
