Ghosted, Not Defeated: Building Genuine Connections at BYU-Idaho — Will's Story

In this episode, Will talks about the stark reality of trying to make friends and build a social life at BYU-Idaho—past all the smiles and greetings, it can feel isolating, and ghosting is all-too-common.He shares his own experience with ghosting, and we talk about how common it really is on campus. People meet, seem genuinely friendly in the moment, make plans, and then disappear when it’s actually time to follow through. And it’s not just Will—he’s talked with a lot of other people who say they’ve run into the same pattern, and that it feels pretty widespread on campus. We also touch on Will’s early struggles with campus housing, including how difficult it was to get settled when he first arrived in Rexburg, as well as the unexpected theft of his personal belongings upon arrival. He also reflects on the lack of activity and inconsistent attendance in the on-campus singles wards, and how that added another layer of difficulty in trying to find a steady sense of community. However, through all of that, Will pushed beyond the expected lack of social life, the ghosting, and the cliché “BYU-I DO” culture to build his own more intentional and fulfilling circle of friends. As he puts it, “I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.”
