Off the Road is a series of interviews with musicians from across the musical spectrum, sharing their experiences during the pandemic, new projects, classic stories and exclusive musical performances.The series is hosted by Hawaii Public Radio/HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence. It began in April 2020 as a way to continue a decade-long tradition of weekly interviews, after the crisis halted touring entertainment, which had provided many of them.     Today, HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence sends off a six-time guest, with strong local connections. Traffic legend, solo artist, major collaborator, singer/guitarist Dave Mason, passed away April 19 at his place in Nevada; he was 79, and sadly had been scheduled to record a new chat with Dave Lawrence this past Monday. We review highlights from six interviews over 15 years, and music to go along with it to honor this sometime-Maui resident and longtime guest.

    HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence welcomes trumpet monster Eddie Henderson for his first-ever appearance on the show. Eddie is hitting Hawaiʻi Island for the upcoming Big Island Jazz and Blues Festival, performing May 16th, at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Eddie has a pretty wild background — as a medical doctor, as a guy who had Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis factor into his childhood experiences, and of course, ended up as part of the band with Herbie Hancock, among other chapters in his fascinating life. The band were popularized around the world via the "Graceland" album by Paul Simon, and had a place in the heart of Nelson Mandela, too, among many topics covered when the South Africa vocal group performed in the Atherton Performing Arts Studio in 2017. Today we learn the fascinating story of retaliation against Foghat by business managers, which stems from the early 1970s when Roger was among the band members who left the earlier blues rock band Savoy Brown. He explains how it ultimately put them even closer to the market they'd score the most success in.

    HPR All Things Considered host Dave Lawrence offers up a remembrance of legendary guitarist Ace Frehley, lead guitarist and sometime vocalist for Kiss in the 1970s and early 1980s. Last Thursday Ace's family announced his passing after a fall led to a head injury, brain bleed, life support, and eventually, his being pulled from life support. In 2014, Ace Frehley was a guest, at the time supporting his Space Invader album. We also add some classic Kiss and Ace solo material for this feature.
