RollTheCredits's podcast

Hosted by Frank and Zach, this is a podcast all about film discussion. We talk movies, directors, actors, cinematographers, and everything in-between.

  1. 295

    Masterpiece Movies

The term perfect is usually used sparingly, but when it comes to films there is always an opinion on at least a few that fit this. We should point out that these are our opinions with our reasons, but that doesn't mean that we don't want to hear some of yours and craft the best we can of masterpiece movies.

  2. 294

    Mandy

How far are you willing to go to gain revenge? Nicholas Cage might have an idea as he plays Red, a man with nothing to lose after a group of hippie cultists murder his wife Mandy. A film that holds nothing back with a unique style of gore, special effects, and just good old fashion chainsaws while still holding a few hidden metaphors as well as themes to pick apart. In the end, it's all about what we do for love.

  3. 293

    Movies We Wish Had Sequels

When films do well at the box office, the next thing to come is usually a follow-up film. The thing is, there are a plethora of movies out there that are great as stand-alone films but we still need to ask "what if?". As always we want to know some of your picks as we make 9 more films about the same thing, with movies we wish had sequels

  4. 292

    Apostle

How far are you willing to go to save a family member, or even test your faith? In this Netflix original, we follow Thomas as he makes his way to a cult island to rescue his sister, all while uncovering a dark secret of the land. This is not a perfect film, but it does excel at providing a cohesive story with great gore, compelling characters, and a director who knows what he is doing. This is definitely a film that slipped by most, but with Spooky season right around the corner, "pray for us" and check it out

  5. 291

    Great Set Designs

How many films have you seen that behind the characters is empty space, and you're okay with it? The sets play just as significant a role as the story does, creating great spaces that can feel like you are in a battle or the smallest details that lead you down a rabbit hole. As always we want to know some of your favorites as we build up the walls for great set designs

  6. 290

    Who Framed Roger Rabbit

If you grew up in the 90's there's a good chance that you witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime film. A one-time event for both Disney and Warner bros. as they were featured in a movie about a detective trying to prove the innocence of a cartoon rabbit in a murder case. It was a film that broke so many rules, perfectly blending animation and live action in a way that still holds up today despite the nightmare it must have been to make. A film that might be a bit more adult than you remembered but in the end, I'm a toon, toons are supposed to make you laugh

  7. 289

    Production Companies

Without the financial backing, most of our favorite films wouldn't have ever been made, unless you are Sam Raimi. When you watch a movie and see a list of logos flash across the screen before the title screen, it's often an afterthought but when you really look at them it's surprising how much one company can be involved in. Today we talk about those unsung heroes in film and as always we want to know your picks as we invest in movie production companies.

  8. 288

    The Seventh Seal

The thing we as humans seem to ponder the most is the idea of what is there beyond this world, whether there is more, and what happens after death. A classic film follows Block as he travels back home after the crusades, looking for life's mysteries, and challenging death to a game of chess for his soul. While this is a loose description, this is what most people know about this film, and to be honest, it is much more than this. While being a slow burn you get to seek the same questions. This can be terrifying for some in its own right but "we must make an idol of our fear, and call it God"

  9. 287

    Best Opening Shots

They are the first things you see after the title screen, the first thing to set the mood of the film, and the first thing that can gauge how invested you will be. The opening shots are incredibly important in film and deserve some time to talk about. As always we want to know some of your favorites as we transition from the title screen to some best opening scenes in films.

  10. 286

    A Clockwork Orange

"You can't change who you really are" unless you possibly undergo experimental treatment? A Stanley Kubrick classic, we follow Alex as he leads a dystopian gang and eventually tries to become reformed while in prison. A film that has been talked up and down we decided to discuss the use of themes, incredible music score, and how there are no wasted scenes to tell a unique story in film history. If you haven't seen this one before, it is definitely a film unlike any other, and after seeing it you will feel like you have been "cured"

  11. 285

    Ambiguous Films

Stare long enough into the abyss, and the abyss stares back. Questions and metaphors are present in life constantly, so wouldn't it make sense to have films that thrive doing the same? There are a plethora of films out there that have open-ended stories and endings and today we talk about the idea of whether that is good or bad. As always we want to know your thoughts as try to crack the code and watch explain videos, on ambiguous films.

  12. 284

    The Power of The Dog

When push comes to shove, family oftentimes is all we have, and that means we are willing to do anything for them. Phil and George, brothers who are ranchers, together become entangled with the lives of a new wife Rose, and son Peter. What unfolds is mental warfare with an outcome that you would not expect at all. While this film does have great cinematography, acting, and touches on great themes it does feel rushed at points and some things don't feel connected. Nevertheless, this is a breakout film of the year, just make sure you don't touch anthrax-ridden cows.

  13. 283

    Favorite Scores and Soundtracks

Music has been said to be the universal language, and in films, the idea of a soundtrack can bring an enhanced excitement while a score can bring an even wider array of emotions. Today we talk about these instances that through sound were able to bring a film to life for us. As always we want to know your favorites as we crank up the volume to our favorite scores and soundtracks.

  14. 282

    Men (2022)

Toxic masculinity is a real issue no matter where you live in the world, being such a horrific thing, it only makes sense to be a horror film. We follow Harper, escaping to a countryside getaway weekend after witnessing her husband's death, and what ensues is a fever dream nightmare. A film that definitely uses the shock factor towards the end, does use genuine horror with a mystique around it from a director known for science fiction. This is absolutely not for everyone but it is something interesting to check out because "what do you want? To be loved"

  15. 281

    Deep Cuts

Hey, do you remember that one movie, with that weird plot but decent scenes? No? Well, I don't think it was a fever dream. This is the feeling that we all have had at some point in time about a weird movie that only we have seen. Today we talk about the obscure and rare, and as always we wanna know your picks as we pick out our favorite deep cuts that no one knows about.

  16. 280

    Phantom Thread

Love is a very complicated thing, some days you and your partner may be head over heels for the other, and some days you might be poisoning them with mushrooms. In this, we follow Reynold Woodcock, a famous dress designer, who finds a new muse in Alma. What begins as love, becomes heartache as routine and lack of empathy take hold. A film that breaks down a romance in a very different way shows just how harsh co-dependency can be. Ultimately some may think this is a "boring" film but to them we say "the tea is going out, but the interruption is staying right here with me"

  17. 279

    Frank Made A Short Film

That's right, he did a thing, Frank has been working for some time now eluding to talking with local artists and people in our communities and that's exactly what he did on film. Today we talk about everything that goes into something like this in hopes people in your area may want to do the same or create film clubs. As always, more than ever, we would like to know what you think with a nice little link down below as we discuss how Frank made a short film

  18. 278

    The Breakfast Club

Going through Highschool there are a number of clicks and groups that are easily recognizable but the thing you don't realize until you are an adult is that we are all the same during that time in our own way. On a Saturday morning, five students are joined together for detention for various things they had done. A film that perfectly captures the 80's and is easily known by everyone but what people don't realize is how heartfelt and heavy this film can be. Having no weak links in acting, just a few scenes that don't add up. That being said, this is a classic, and "don't you forget about it".

  19. 277

    Most Rewatchable Films

To some people, there are those movies that come along every time they show up on demand, while channel surfing, or with some friends that you just can't help but watch again. This effect is very rare and brings on a question of what makes them so rewatchable? Today we talk about this and as always, we wanna know some of your favorites as we watch over and over again our most rewatchable films.

  20. 276

    Moonlight

Not knowing what a person has gone through until you walk a mile in their shoes is a very poetic phrase for this film. At three separate points in a young man's life we follow Chiron as he goes through life as first "Little", then "Chiron" and finally "Black". In a film that paints a scary yet beautiful story of a boy struggling with bullying, poverty, and his sexuality you can't help but to want the best for him and to see him overcome all the hardships no matter what it takes. A top A24 film to check out if you haven't already because "it can't be worse out here"

  21. 275

    Great Editing in Film

The idea of filming a movie in one take is the goal for most directors but is next to impossible to actually accomplish. When all else fails there is "movie magic" and splicing scenes together is the best option to do so. That being said, there are those moments in film that do this better than others and that is what we are here to discuss. As always we wanna know some of your favorites as we cut and splice together so great editing in films.

  22. 274

    Swiss Army Man

Did you ever think there would be a film that could be so crude with farts and masturbation talk yet still be so heartwarming and meaningful? This movie somehow does this as Hank is stranded on an island and comes across a dead body named Manny who has interesting powers. A film that teaches you to be yourself and not apologize for how you think or feel. The downside, however, is the turn this film takes at the end that changes the entire mood. That being said it is still worth the watch to see something incredibly unique, and that's not "bad talking"

  23. 273

    Movies That Feel The Same

Do you ever get that feeling while watching a movie that you've seen it somewhere before? Better yet a film that seems really similar to this that may have just changed a few things here and there? With the amount of film out nowadays it's hard to think anything is truly original and with that comes some films that feel one and the same. As always we wanna know some that you feel are similar as we talk about movies that feel the same.

  24. 272

    Suspiria 2018

Becoming a professional dancer is hard enough without witches attempting to steal your body. Well, that's exactly what happens to Suzy as she is caught in a power struggle between two owners of a dance studio that are also powerful witches. A slow burn of a film that knows just the right times to ramp up and give you horror with a bleak color scheme and bleaker setting. This film has a lot of tricks up its sleeve as it reminds you that "there is more to this building than what you can see"

  25. 271

    Offscreen Vs Onscreen Deaths

Death is inevitable in this world and in the case of film, there's no easy way around it. However, there are a few ways that you can make an impact when it comes to death in films, and deciding to show it or not can create a whole mood or convey emotion like none other. As always we wanna know some situations in movies you think works better as we tell you about them or decide to show you instead of the power of offscreen vs onscreen deaths in films.

  26. 270

    Watchmen

Once you realize the world is a joke it really is that easy to be a comedian. After vigilantes are outlawed, a few remaining heroes band together to solve who has murdered one of their own while also trying to stop armageddon from occurring between nations. This is Zack Snyder at his absolute best, providing a different kind of superhero film that needed a change drastically in this time frame. From the character development, all the way to the overall storytelling of this film, this was something special in a time we didn't know we needed it, and it proves that the times they are a-changin'.

  27. 269

    Good Movies, Bad Endings

"Finish-out strong" is a term that comes to mind when you think of how films should end, either something satisfying or something ambiguous to leave you thinking. The problem sometimes is that you can have a film that is compelling but falls flat on its face at the end. It's a rare occurrence but there are those times and with that, we wanna know some of your choices as we start out strong and fumble at the end with good movies but with bad endings.

  28. 268

    The Night House

The grieving process is hard enough when you lose a loved one but it could become terrifying when there may be an evil entity in your home. Beth struggles to accept her husband's suicide when she travels down a rabbit hole of what drove him to it. This film really excels when it comes to playing on insecurities, utilizing negative space and optical illusion, and creating a story that leaves you wondering the entire time. If you haven't seen this one it's definitely a good time to check it, but remember to trick it and don't listen to it.

  29. 267

    Unnecessary Sequels

In the world that we live in, by now it is nearly impossible or close to it to create a film that is 100% original. There are some films that triumph in this with years of research and direction but when that's too hard you can always make a sequel. Sequels can either bring new life into a series or make you wish they never came out, and today we are talking about those films. As always we wanna know some of those remakes you can't stand as we CGI, cut out, or completely change what happened in unnecessary sequels.

  30. 266

    Black Swan

Perfection is a concept that is truly unobtainable and when you mix a bad mental state with it, it gets way worse. Today we follow the story of Nina as she finally is picked as the lead in a ballet production, only for her to slowly go insane blending reality and insanity together. A film that does such a great job of altering the world around you that even you are curious about what is going on, uses camera movements with the music to create a very unique experience. This is definitely one of those movies that come around once in a while, just make sure not to stab yourself watching it

  31. 265

Movies You Can Only Watch Once

One of the many reasons we watch movies is for the simple fact of rewatchability for the ones we love. However, there are those films out there that while some may be good, bad, or downright disturbing, have this "X factor" that makes you feel like you never wanna watch them again. Today we talk about those films and at the same time wanna know some that you feel the same way about as we open this door and then never think or talk about them again in films we can only watch once.

  32. 264

    Dog Day Afternoon

Noone said robbing banks was an easy task, no one ever expects to become an entertainment spectacle in a matter of hours either. Sonny and Sal are partners robbing a bank when things go south and it becomes a hostage situation, what follows is a rollercoaster as everyone involved become more than just leverage. A film that tackles racial profiling, freedom of speech, LGBTQ rights, and the class system would usually never be thought to be in a film like this yet we get something special that has so many layers to it. If you haven't seen this one before, you are in for a treat, just make sure you check the getaway car first.

  33. 263

    Impactful Deaths

Death and taxes are the only two things in this world that are guaranteed, taxes aren't always as memorable when it comes to movies though. Today we talk about those scenes in film that left your jaw dropped or even emotionally scarred after watching. As always we wanna know some of your favorites as we fall out of a building, get hacked to pieces, or sacrifice ourselves to save the planet from an asteroid in some of our favorite impactful deaths in film.

  34. 262

    Brothers

There are a few things in this world that are worth fighting for, some would say country, others family but it gets a little tricky when it's a choice between the two. In this film, we follow Sam who is presumed dead while touring in Afghanistan, meanwhile Tommy a screwup takes care of his family back home. This is one of those films that has a powerful message that kind of just loses itself within it, never really capitalizing on big moments. That being said the moments that you do have feel powerful and if nothing else Tobey Maguire is a star in this making you believe the line "he doesn't deserve you"

  35. 261

    Favorite Cameo’s

The small guest appearance of a character or actor can be something that sparks controversy, creates future roles or is just a fun comedy act. Today we take a look at some of these small 5 minute scenes that can create a memorable moment even in the most mundane films. As always we wanna know some of your favorites as we guest spot and take up a small role while talking about some of our favorite cameo spots in films

  36. 260

    Dragged Across Concrete

In the timeframe of 2019 when some big films such as The Lighthouse, Jojo Rabbit, and Doctor Sleep arrived it was easy to forget about a realistic cop film in the works. Today we talk about that as we follow Brett and Tony as detectives who are suspended for 6 weeks and in order to make money must rob the robbers. A film that can be described as "painfully long" is not without a rhyme and reason as it is a very true depiction of cop work that throws a twist in the only way S. Craig Zahler knows how. Once you see what happens by the end, you'll also be yelling "anchovies"

  37. 259

    Favorite Animated Characters

Escaping reality has always been one of the fun things about films, but taking it one step further into the animated world can be even more exciting. In the world of wacky and outrageous, there are those few characters that either the voice actor or the animation itself brought the character to life right in front of us. As always we wanna know some of your favorites as we sketch them out for our favorite animated characters.

  38. 258

    Ratatouille

A great skill to have in life is being able to cook, some take that skill and are able to turn it into a profession, and even fewer take that profession and become great at it but that means nothing when a rat can do it. In this Pixar film, we follow Remy the rat as he helps a down on his luck chef rise through the ranks in France. This film has a lot of themes that are made for adults more so but since we are those, we love them as well as the color pallet and light-heartedness this film has. If we don't love it, we don't eat it, and we love this one.

  39. 257

    Favorite Vehicles In Films

There's nothing like being on the open road, with the wind in your hair, as you time travel using your Delorean or maybe riding on a broomstick to Hogwarts. There are a vast amount of films that rely on transportation and even more that have memorable moments using them which is why we needed to take the time to deep dive into the ones we love. As always we wanna know some of your favorites as we strap in, hit second gear and talk about our favorite vehicles in films

  40. 256

    Short Term 12

Mental health is something that has become more talked about in youth as of late, as well as films also diving deeper into these themes but it has been a while since one fully embraces it. This film follows Grace, a counselor at a care unit for at-risk teens as she attempts to navigate their mental health as well as her own with past trauma. A film that has a weird effect that while it takes on dark tones, it actually feels pretty light, and that's a balance that not many films can have. This is a film that gives you a lot of stories with time for everyone, even Floyd, and fuck you Floyd

  41. 255

    Deservant of Leading Roles

The art of becoming an actor is one that comes with a lot of time and effort, even worse is putting in the work and never becoming that recognizable in films. Being known as an "A-lister" in films requires a lot of talent, however, that doesn't mean that there aren't those who are incredible that haven't reached that status. Today we take a look at those people that despite not being well known, still have a mass amount of talent. As always, we wanna know some of your favorites as we create our wishlist of actors that should be top stars.

  42. 254

    Arrival

Since the dawn of humans, language has evolved from grunting and hand signs into complex sentences and paragraphs, now how would you teach something so normal to us to something otherworldly? In one of the most realistic sci-fi films, we follow Louise and Ian as they attempt to discover what 12 alien spacecraft around the world are trying to tell us. An interesting film that gives us a look into our own way of life, as well as a balanced way to interpret time flow, one of the only faults, would be to some it's "boring" but if you really give yourself to it even you can decipher the code

  43. 253

    Respecting The Bad Guy

They are the ones that help a hero become a superhero, those that give a detective a reason to solve the crime, and they are the ones that creep under the bed and give us a survival story. Today we define and break down the evil in films that create a reason for everything going on and most of the time give you a character that is much more dynamic compared to the protagonist. As always we wanna know what you think as they have many names of antagonists, villains, or bad guys but either way, we show them some respect.

  44. 252

    Boogie Nights

The porn industry has evolved over the years from something very dark and underground to something almost widely accepted. During the late 70s, we follow Eddie as he begins his journey from a "boy to man" so to speak. The sophomore film of Paul Thomas Anderson as he showcases at an early age in his career that he makes blocking a shot and storytelling look easy with how good this truly is. A film with much more to talk about than just porn will have you saying, "I'm a star" throughout this.

  45. 251

    Favorite Camera Movements Part 2

An episode so nice, we had to do it twice. With the work of camera movement, there are always interesting ways to convey a story using them. That being said, we decided one episode wasn't good enough. As always we wanna know some of your favorite movements through Facebook or Instagram as we pan over, tilt and zoom in on some of our favorite camera movements in films

  46. 250

    District 9

Change is often a good thing when it comes to switching up your routine or incorporating a new element into things except perhaps when it involves aliens. In this story, we follow Wikus as he slowly starts to become the very thing he is attempting to get rid of, the alien known as "prawns". With the help of a found-footage style to it as well as CGI that still holds up in some areas, this film is able to tell a story about the horrors of immigration and homelessness in a unique way using a sci-fi element and plenty of cat food.

  47. 249

    Perfect Casting

There is nothing better than while watching a movie you watch an actor putting their all in to the character, someone that embodies the role so well that you can't fathom anyone else being that character. Today we take a look at some of those actors that made us second guess who's playing who. As always we wanna know some of your favorite picks as we take a look at some perfect casting in films.

  48. 248

    FRESH

Nowadays one of the hardest things to do as a young adult is dating, especially in our day and age when you could end up finding someone just looking for a one-night stand or maybe just someone trying to sell "your meat". In this film, we follow Noa, a woman trying to date and seeminly finding the perfect guy only for him to be a serial killer. What sounds like a generic idea actually has a fun spin on things with great writing, clever twists, and an 80's retro vibe to stand out from the rest. This Hulu original is definitely worth the watch as long as you remember, you are what you eat.

  49. 247

    Modern Day Classics

Films come around once in a lifetime that can be considered universally classic films. The weird part about that is often enough you don't really know when you are in a timeframe that they might be classics down the line. Today we debunk this idea by picking some of those films that we think will live in the hall of fame status in the future. As always we wanna know some of your choices as well as check out the links to help out Ukraine as we discuss modern-day classics

  50. 246

    A Streetcar Named Desire

For our last classics film, we picked one that many people may remember being shown in high school, but may not recall the impact. A film about Blanche going to live with her sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley in New Orleans begins to unravel her fragile mental state. A film that, while based on a play, is at its best when feeling like it is on stage, as well as bringing out several themes that stick with you long after the credits roll. If you haven't seen this one we highly recommend as well as check out the links below to show support to the people of Ukraine, and remember that we don't want realism, we want magic.
