3 Ways To Stop Ebola Infection…Today!
Hello Rescue Fans! I’ve debated as to whether I should discuss Ebola from either a professional or lay person level or even discuss it at all. Because of an experience I had where I walked into a contaminated bathroom that could have been an infectious problem, I decided it was definitely worth taking about. In this episode, I talk about Ebola, it’s risks and how breaking the chain of infection through disinfection and barriers, it’s almost impossible to contract an infection. My hope is that rather than simply re-discussing the same things you’ve been hearing about Ebola, I’ll help shed light on how to arm yourself with awareness, and the techniques required to stop an infection in it’s tracks. I hope this helps. The post 3 Ways To Stop Ebola Infection…Today! appeared first on Roy on Rescue.

When Does An Injured Finger Need To Be Seen By The Doctor?
Hello Rescue Fans! I received an email from someone who fell while rollerblading and injured their hand. They didn’t want to go to the doctor if they didn’t have to, but were concerned that they may have a fracture or a more serious injury and didn’t want to make a bad decision.Though I’m no “Orthopod“(slang word for the day meaning orthopedist) but there are a few tell-tale signs that I look for to determine if a trip to the doctor is warranted. Let’s face it, almost all injuries bruise and swell, but it’s in finding a couple of other things like crepitus or deformity that we realize this may be more serious. Keep in mind, even a bruise or swelling could be reason enough for trip to the doc. Though needless trips to the ER are never fun, losing the important function of fingers or toes is even worse. For those of you who can relate, I hope this helps! The post When Does An Injured Finger Need To Be Seen By The Doctor? appeared first on Roy on Rescue.

3 Rules To A Healthy Lunch Made Easy!
3 Rules to Eating A Healthy Lunch On The Run And welcome back rescue fans! So you’ve taken the plunge into eating a vegetarian or vegan diet and maybe even have seen that you’ve got to limit your wheat intake. Now, you’re hungry, you’re at work and have no idea where to eat, what to eat or where to begin? Well stay tuned to this episode of RoyOnHealth because I have some ideas for you! Full transcript to follow under video window. Continued Transcript To Follow: So I finished my workout, and on my way to the ProTrainings offices, I knew I needed to grab some food for lunch. Now keep in mind, I’ve changed my diet and my exercise routine a lot over the last 10 years but nothing like I’ve done in the past 12 months. I could probably be pretty accurately described as a Vegan Hybrid. Well, as I was moving my way through the vegetable section and had my arms filled with my top 4-5 products I noticed another patron that seemed a bit lost. They would first look at the salads, then they would look at the fruit section, then they would go back to the whole vegetables only to end up back at the banana section of the fruit area. It was then that I thought, you know, I wonder how many healthy diets are failed because it’s just too confusing or difficult to do? Well, I’ve got a couple of ideas for you. First, let’s set some ground rules that I use for my own diet. What kind of diet to I eat you ask? I’m a Veganvegetarian Hybrid What’s a veganvegetarian hybrid you ask? Well, it’s it’s a made up name for when I will eat meat when set before me by friends and family but when on my own, is not consumed. I do from time to time have dairy products but for the most part, I prefer a vegan diet as it’s what makes me feel the best most of the time. The reason I eat this way is based on some pretty hard science that proves that animal protein is probably the leading reason we have inflammatory, cardio vascular and cancer problems. More on that later but that’s the reason I eat the way I eat. Now, If you’ve ever tried to eat whole, plant based foods that are not made of animal products or anything that contains gluten, you know that it can be a bit of a challenge and so I thought I’d share some help. Now, I’m going to let it rip starting right here! And this is in order to develop a healthy life style that is sustainable, manageable, and effective. If you don’t care about your health, stop watching already. But if you do, and you’ve had this frustration, keep watching. Number 1 Rule: Don’t be in love with the taste of food as much as you love the results of a healthy lifestyle. This is a precursor to making my dietary hints work. If you’re picky, if you can’t eat anything that you don’t absolutely love…then, this is not for you. Or at least until you master your tastebuds. Number 2. Diversify your foods enough to get a mix of nutrition but don’t worry so much…it’s only lunch! You can get crazy with the balance of your meals at home when you’re in your own kitchen and have a refrigerator. Number 3. Think simple: We only need between 250-50 calories per meal and Liquid, Fiber, Fruit and/ or protein adds up fast. It’s not about feeling full, it’s about knowing that you’ve eaten what you need to be healthy. For example, Banana’s (105 cal per). Good potassium for post workout but high in sugar, almost 28 grams per. it also contains Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Manganese, and is a very good source of Vitamin B6. I look at a Banana like a candy bar. Healthier but still loaded with sugar. But, if I’m running short on time, I can spread a little peanut butter on the banana and Vala! I have a smooth, tasty and nutritious protein bar on the go. Celery sticks are becoming a staple for me. They’re loaded with water, are a good source of vitamin A and Magnesium as well as they are alkolotic and help digestion. Because they’re so full of water, they really help the peanut butter go down. Now, I like to spread peanut butter on them to round out the vegetable and protein combination which keeps me going through out the day but if you’re allergic to PB, you may be able to try humous. Very good too. It’s high in plant protein but doesn’t have any peanut allergy risk. I fall back on Peanut Butter quite a bit but be careful. It’s calorie count adds up fast. almost 190 calories in just 2 tablespoons! That amount only has 3 gm of sugar but carries a whopping 7gm of protein. Maybe you want something that tastes like wheat or grain but you have a Gluten sensitivity or cilia disease. More and more food producers are making GF products and here is a really delicious GF granola that i tried today. KIND healthy grains is GF but tastes very good. At 130 calories for a 1/3 cup it’s low on suer at 6g and at 3G of protein it’s not a bad source to replace the peanut butter. You’d have to have almost 2/3 of a cup to get as much protein as 2 tbspn of peanut butter but hey. We’re not freaking out about this. Of course, there’s always a variety of nuts to eat. My favorites are Almond, ideally raw but I know, it can be hard sometimes. Walnuts, Pecans and seeds like sunflower, pumpkin and pine. So, next time you’re hungry but don’t want to fall of the wagon, go to your local grocery store and look for these items. They’re nutritious, they’re animal protein free and they taste good too! Oh sure, your colleagues will look at you funny while they’re wolfing down they’re two for one wendy’s chilly or their big mac, but hey! It’s kind of fun being out of the ordinary isn’t it? How To Process Feelings Of Guilt When CPR Doesn’t Work
I received an email from a person who provided CPR to their father but unfortunately, their father did not respond to the CPR and remained dead. The child who provided CPR to them is now dealing with incredible feelings of failure and guilt. They feel as though they failed their father. They feel as though they did not help enough. They are sad, but they also feel responsible that their loved one is gone. I knew I had to respond to this as soon as possible so I recorded a direct message to them in hopes that it can help them understand that they did everything right and what’s more…they showed a wonderful act of love to their father. I hope this helps them but I also hope it helps others who are suffering from the same or similar feelings. Peace Be With You. Roy Shaw TV Interview With “Ask The Expert”.
A while back I had the honor of being asked to be on the health care panel for a local television show called, “Ask The…”. In this episode, Shelly Irwin had wanted several representatives from different types of medical response agencies. The Hospital ER, the Ambulance on the street and a paramedic in education. It was a lot of fun and though it’s a bit long and my mike is turned up a little high, I thought some of you might like to here what the different types of medical responders do and how they look at things from their world. I loved being a street paramedic but I really love being able to host RoyOnRescue and create life saving video trainings that are watched all around the world. Hope you enjoy it. Oh yeah, did I say it’s 26 minutes long? Might want to refresh that beverage of choice before you begin! : ) The post Roy Shaw TV Interview With “Ask The Expert”. appeared first on Roy on Rescue.

Roy Juices For The First Time!
Hello Rescue Fans! Remember at the end of the 2013 I said something about a series of wellness segments for 2014? Well…it’s come to roost and here’s my first installment. It’s a little off the cuff but I got so excited to show off this great new healthy lifestyle assistant, that I threw all caution to the wind and recorded the first in-house juicing experience with an iPhone. For those of you who juice, you already know that the flavor was so intense(in a good way) and the fragrance was so brilliant, it made me laugh outloud! I enjoyed another juice the following morning but kept it a little lighter and shared it with a couple of colleagues in the ProTrainings offices. Success! I’m looking forward to more episodes on wellness and prevention and who knows, maybe I’ll even sneak in some of the ways I’ve found to eat smart during a crazy busy day. For now, keep on rescuing and remember, the best way to survive cardiac arrest…is to never have one! Cheers! The post Roy Juices For The First Time! appeared first on Roy on Rescue.

How Do I Treat Neck Injuries On The Ice?
In this episode we answer a question that was sent in by a Rescue Fan that wondered what the best course of action would be if a person suffered a neck injury on the ice. It’s important to remember that if the patient has any pain, movement minimization is the goal while maintaining the patients core body temperature while waiting for EMS to arrive. If the person doesn’t feel hurt, they may elect to slowly get to their feet and recover. If they do feel pain, numbness, tingling, weakness or loss of consciousness, the best course of treatment in my opinion is to call 911 or EMS. I hope it helps. Flu Shot…Or Not?
Hello again rescue fans! In this episode, I dig into a subject that is sure to cause controversy. But…for those who know me, when have I ever steered clear from that? So, after being made aware of a situation where a mother was forced to sign a waiver that stated something to the effect, “I understand that by not getting my children vaccinated with the flu shot, I am endangering society…blah…blah, etc.”. This caused me to be a little curious about what all this unreasonable pressure is about in getting the flu shot. Is it really that good? Is it really that effective? Is it really that safe? I mean, since when has an epidemic every been prevented by a flu shot? The last flu pandemic was in like 1969 but it still was not like the one in 1918! And since then, we suddenly think that in 2008 we should be developing a flu vaccine to save countless lives? Well, this would all be fine and well if we didn’t have to worry about potentially dangerous substances found in the medium of the vaccine. In fact, more and more reliable research is being uncovered all the time about the potential risks of vaccinations that contain toxic substances like Thimerosal which is a mercury derivative and a highly toxic heavy metal and a carcinogenic called Polysorbate 80 (also known as Tween 80): Generally contaminated with the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane. Not to mention the possible side effects of allergies, asthma and autism linked to the adjuvant. So, before you take the plunge, I think it’s a good idea to do your own research, find credible websites including the CDC itself and look at the real research to see if the risk of injecting these chemicals are really worth the possible but not guaranteed benefits of getting the flu shot. I hope it helps. The post Flu Shot…Or Not? appeared first on Roy on Rescue.

Why Do We Cover A Patient In Shock?
Hello Rescue Fans! In this unedited video, I talk about and explain why we cover a patient who may be showing signs of shock after this question came in by email. Remember, it’s important to help the patient feel comfortable, cared for, and safe as best as possible. But physiologically speaking…keeping the patient warm helps prevent hypothermia “which shifts the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve to the left, impairs oxygen delivery, and exacerbates the shock state.”(http://www.ebmedicine.net/topics.php?paction=showTopicSeg&topic_id=110&seg_id=2113) And in the end, the fact that the person feels well cared for can help them become less anxious and do better through the traumatic event. Hope this helps. The post Why Do We Cover A Patient In Shock? appeared first on Roy on Rescue.

Can I Use Adult AED Pads on a Child or Infant?
Hello Rescue Fans! I received a question via email about using an adult AED on a pediatric patient if there were no pediatric AED pads available. The quick answer? Yes, you can. Remember, many newer AED’s are now attenuated and will usually give as much electricity as needed to accomplish de-fibrillation. If at all possible, use an AED with pediatric pads and place them correctly on the chest and back of the pediatric patient. If no pediatric pads are available, place the adult size AED pads on the front center of chest and in the middle of the child’s back approximately between the shoulder blades to ensure most effective de-fibrillation even with adult AED. In the end, when a person is suffering sudden cardiac arrest, the majority of the time, they are in a some form of de-fibrillatable rythm and an AED is of great benefit, even if the size of the pads don’t match. Ages for the child ranges between 1-8 or first signs of puberty, after that, treat as an adult and if under 1 year of age, treat as an infant. There’s some question as to the effectiveness of de-fibrillation in infants under 1 year. See the above links for more details regarding this subject. I hope this helps. Keep On Rescuing! Tourniquet Use Deemed A Lifesaver During Boston Bombing Incident
In this episode, I take a closer look at the reasons that tourniquets were so important during the Boston Marathon bombing aftermath. Injuries were similar to those seen on the battle field and the battle field has trauma that requires immediate hemorrhage treatment and usually includes a long transport time. In the case of the bombing, we saw a very similar landscape. Though we don’t use tourniquets often in peaceful situations, there can and may be times where a tourniquet could mean the difference between life and death. You Just Got Drain Opener Splashed In Your Eye. Top 5 Things To Do.
I just received a question from one of our Power Rescue Fans. They asked: “I just went through a frightening and painful experience at work the other night. I got splashed in my eyes with an acid based cleaner. I know some chemicals that can become more corrosive if water is applied, although that doesn’t go for all of them. What do you do in the case of first aid when you get any type of chemical in your eyes? Is irrigation always the first line treatment? Thanks!” What a great question. You’re right about the concept that some chemicals could actually cause more damage when water is added. Take the case of phosphorous pentoxide, which can burst into flames upon contact with water, or in the case of other dry alkali chemicals they may actually begin a chemical reaction upon water contact. In most cases “dry” chemicals should be brushed off as best as possible, prior to irrigating with water. When it comes to eyes, the rule of thumb for most chemicals, not the least acid, is flush with sterile or clean water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Here’s a list of the top five actions to take after you realize there’s an eye emergency: 1. Stay calm and calm the patient with confident words like, I’m Going To Take Good Care of You! 2. Is the scene safe? If not, wait until it is or get personal protective equipment 3. Determine what type of chemical you’re dealing with and read the label for first aid or read the MSDS sheet 4. If the chemical exposure calls for dilution, begin flushing the effected eye(s) with clean or sterile water for at least 15 minutes 5. Tell EMS providers what chemical you’re dealing with, wow much the patient was exposed to, and what treatment has been provided and for how long The “eye-dia” sorry…is that we manually keep the eyelids open while we flush the eye(s). This should be done in a way that won’t cause cross contamination of the non effected eye. In other words, flush from inside to outside away from the non-affected eye. Activate EMS (911 in the US and 999 in the UK as well as many other countries). The EMS personnel should continue the flushing with sterile water or saline for the duration of the trip to the hospital. Remember, “the solution to pollution is dilution. P.S. Don’t let hysterics get in the way of your treatment. Your patient is going to be scared, blind and really upset. Besides all that…it probably hurts like fire in the eyes, but as rescuers, we have to do what needs to be done and that means holding the eyelids open while flushing. Keep on Rescuing! Nurse Doesn’t Give CPR To Elderly Resident, Did She Do Something Wrong?
Hello Rescue Fans, Today I was made aware of a story that is on fire with debate. Should CPR have been given to the elderly person or not? Should the RN be charged? Should the family sue the “Nursing Home?” actually independent living residence. How does the blah blah blah association feel about this? How does the National Board of Registered Nurses feel about this? On and on and on! What I can’t believe is why everyone is blaming a non medical facility, which has pre-aranged agreements with it’s residents that don’t want any CPR for calling 911 and then simply doing what the resident and the management agreed to do? Okay, so there wasn’t an actual DNR(Do Not Resuscitate) which can lead to a lot of miscommunication and ambiguity…I give you that but come on, guilty of neglect? Charged for not administering CPR? I know what you’re thinking right now. Roy has flipped his lid! Here he is, the RoyOnRescue host that is always talking about how we should get involved in order to try and save a life and now he’s sticking up for this non-caring facility that let this “poor” women die! You’re right, I am all about saving lives when they can be saved, but I’m also all about death with dignity when the time is right and it’s in line with the wishes of the patient themselves. What’s more is that this debate is not about the wishes of the patient, which has already been confirmed by deceased family members, this is about a 911 dispatcher who thought that the person at the end of the phone should care enough to begin CPR, regardless of the rules and regulations by which the employee was mandated to follow. Yes, the caller should probably not have said that they were a nurse which could be interpreted as a skilled nursing center instead of an independent retirement community. Yes, the nurse and the dispatcher could have been more calm while explaining that the patients wishes were for no resuscitation and that the community agrees to no resuscitation prior to living in that facility. But in the end, the mainstream media has gotten wind of this story and blown it way, way out of proportion. I’ve dealt with so many of these calls that I predicted what the problem was before I even read the story. And after reading not one, but many accounts, found that it was just as I thought. In short, lack of communication, lack of paperwork and lack of privacy. You put all those together and what do you get? A hot story that takes off like a wild fire! Watch the video for my thoughts and then give me your feedback. Especially if you disagree. I love a good debate. Meteorite Explodes Over Russia Injuring Thousands!
I tried to release this video episode on Friday and unfortunately had some media problems. I wanted to make sure to address some of the questions regarding how people could be injured by the Meteor explosion if it never hit the earth. Great question, because the meteorite entered earths atmosphere so fast and burned so brightly when it came in, it drew thousands of peoples attention and they went near windows to gaze up at the aftermath of it’s entry. While people were standing by, the sonic boom was so loud, it shattered windows, caved in buildings and in some cases even blew in doors. The shards of broken glass was the greatest cause of injuries. But some reports said there could have been ear drum damage, some eye and vision disorders and I believe even one cardiac arrest though this may be hard to confirm. If you have any interest in what happened want to see shocking footage and how these injured people could have protected themselves, be sure to watch this episode of RoyOnRescue. Could You Survive Stranded In A Snow Storm?
After hearing about a couple getting stranded in a mountain pass off-roading and the driver dying while seeking help, I thought I should talk about key elements around surviving out in the cold. People are often overcome by the cold simply due to lack of pre-planning, proper equipment and an adequate plan for survival until rescue help arrives. If you’ve ever wondered what you would do if you were lost, stranded or overcome by the winter elements, be sure to watch this episode of RoyOnRescue. In the meantime, remember at least these important points: 1. Let people know where you are going and what route you’ll be taking…then stick to it! 2. Dress with layers of clothing or have extra clothing available 3. Bring warming agents like hand and pocket warmers along with extra blankets 4. Bring extra food that can handle getting cold or even freezing like granola, nuts etc. 5. Eat snow for hydration 6. Bring GPS 7. Bring Flare Gun 8. Never drive with low gas tank 9. If the roads are dangerous, maybe stay home or extend your vacation 10. Repeat steps 1 thru 9 Peace, Roy, RoyOnRescue.com The post Could You Survive Stranded In A Snow Storm? appeared first on Roy on Rescue.

Dangers Of The Rescue Scene
In this episode, I take a moment to talk about the recent traumatic death of an EMT who was struck by a vehicle while working with a patient on the scene of an accident. No matter if you’re a professional or a good samaritan, scene safety is the utmost important factor to keep in mind. It’s terrible that this EMT was killed in the line of duty trying to save lives and help people. I hope this RoyOnRescue helps to sharpen everyone’s level of awareness regarding safe scenes and how to rescue without becoming a patient yourself. Ankles, Impaled Objects and CPR
In this episode of RoyOnRescue, I answer two different emailed questions. The first from Michael who asked: “I was taught you remove the object only if it interferes with CPR.” Great question Mike. As a general rule of EMS, we only remove an impaled object if it’s obstructing the airway and preventing the ability to secure an airway. Removing an impaled object will often times “un-plug: the hole that was created by the injury and may cause excessive internal bleeding that can only be controlled in a surgical environment. As a lay rescuer, the Good Samaritan will follow the directions of the 911 dispatcher. In a worse case scenario, hands only CPR can still be performed. If the object is in the chest, try and work around the object as best as possible and provide what care you can without causing more harm. A second question came in just this afternoon from Sara who asks about an “ankle popping out” and what to do if this were to happen while on vacation. It sounds as though Sara may have a chronic problem with her knee or ankle but because of a recent injury is especially concerned that it could happen while on an exciting vacation this Friday. In both cases I hope that the advice I give helps and a little tidbit about the first aid acronym, RICES could be the solution while on vacation. Watch this episode to learn more about what to do in case either of these situations arise. Happy Thanksgiving! Can I Choke A Patient With A Pulse Check?
In this video, Roy takes a moment to explain a training that he includes in his CPR videos where he checks for a carotid pulse on one side of the patients neck and then the other without moving from one side to the other physically. Some students have asked if this is wrong, as they were taught to NEVER reach over the patients neck while checking a pulse. They were told that they could crush the patients trachea or even choke the patient! For Roy’s answer, you’ll want to watch this video. Hurricane Sandy Is In Full Force and Now I Need An Ambulance!
Okay Rescuers, When natural or unnatural disasters strike, the chance of getting emergency help to your doorstep fast while the EMS services are exhausted is very slim. I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about a situation that doesn’t get discussed much. What effect does a hurricane or natural disaster have on the rest of the community? We sometimes forget the fact that though the rest of the world is distracted by a storm or other disaster related buzz, people still get sick, heart attacks still happen, car accidents still happen but we don’t often think about from where the next ambulance, fire truck or police car is going to be responding. This episode of RoyOnRescue addresses this issue and urges people who may be in high risk of needing an ambulance or other EMS service to think proactively and make arrangements before the emergency happens. Think about moving loved ones with fragile health to temporary locations that may not be effected by the hurricane. Can the person stay with a relative until the community has recovered? What is the back up plan if one can be found? I hope this RoyOnRescue episode get’s everyone thinking and will hopefully help prevent a needless death due to not having the appropriate plans in place. Stay safe, our prayers are with everyone who has been and is effected by hurricane Sandy and other storms. When A Bike Crash Gives More Than A Road Rash!
Hello Everyone, It’s been almost three weeks since my last episode was posted! Just for the record…it’s partly because I’ve filled my Hard Disk and was short by about 4GB of RAM. Seriously though, after suffering some technical problems I’m back in swing and hope to have several new posts in the next few days. I’m also working on a new RoyOnRescue format to freshen things up and keep them moving in a direction that you would like to see them go. In this episode, I cover a topic that was brought to me by a person who saw a road cyclist crash. They were in bad condition and she wasn’t sure what to do. I thought I’d take a minute to answer this while I upgrade my hardware on the old MacBook and rest before continuing work on the new style creation for the new upcoming year. I hope this is helpful. Keep the questions and comments coming and if you have a story that you’d like to share and get the RoyOnRescue point of view, please email [email protected]. Thanks and keep on rescuing! A person talking on a cordless telephone in the living room of her house was slightly injured by a lightning strike. A 29-year old man and a 14-year old child were struck by lightning at a rodeo in Lawrence Township and hospitalized. Two horses were also struck and killed by lightning. Neighborhood Heroes Making A Difference
In this RoyOnRescue, we take a look at Stephen St. Bernard, who risked his own life to save another. He caught a young girl after she fell from a third story platform and though he suffered some injuries after the rescue, he saved the little girls life. This is an episode dedicated to the neighborhood heroes that get involved and make a difference. You won’t want to miss the live footage of this heroic event. Thank you Stephen St. Bernard, for being a true hero. Some have asked, how does catching a falling child compare to catching a weight at that velocity. A physicist has figured it out and states, “If she weighs 50 pounds, the man and ground must push up with an average of 12 times that force, or 600 pounds.” The post Neighborhood Heroes Making A Difference appeared first on Roy on Rescue.

What Do I Do If I Find Someone In Anemic Shock?
Hello Everyone, In this Vlog, Roy replies to an emailed question regarding someone’s friend who apparently has anemic complications. Due to this, she goes into shock, most likely due to the lack of Red Blood Cells which are required to carry oxygenated blood to the body’s tissues. Roy wanted to make sure and reply to this before the weekend. Hope it helps. Keep On Rescuing, RoyOnRescue Team P.S. The following is the explanation of anemia per MedScape Reference(http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/780334-overview) Anemia is characterized by a reduction in the number of circulating red blood cells (RBCs), the amount of hemoglobin, or the volume of packed red blood cells (hematocrit). Anemia is classified as acute or chronic. Acute anemia denotes a precipitous drop in the RBC population due to hemolysis or acute hemorrhage. In the emergency department (ED), acute hemorrhage is by far the most common etiology. This article also discusses other causes of acute anemia. They’re Choking And I Can’t Get Them Out Of The Wheelchair!
Maybe you work with patients that are wheelchair bound and may, at times, be too large or have disabilities that limit your ability to get them out of the wheelchair in a hurry. Especially when they begin to choke during meal time. I received a phone call message regarding this very situation and though we had a great discussion about what to do for the patient over the phone, the person I was talking with thought it would be a great idea for it to be made into a video training. So, here you go Maria! I hope it helps. Best Wishes, Roy The post They’re Choking And I Can’t Get Them Out Of The Wheelchair! appeared first on Roy on Rescue.
