S3:E10: Healing and Sobriety
Welcome to a special weekend edition of Swoonpies and Money. This episode is devoted entirely to a powerful message: sobriety is not a weakness or a sacrifice; it is a bold, life-affirming choice that requires courage, honesty, and daily commitment.Host Sam Dunman sits down with guest Christine Harvey for a candid and reflective conversation on healing, and the importance of having a strong community—one that holds you accountable, supports you through challenges, and reminds you that you’re never navigating the journey alone. Together, they explore how even simple practices like intentional breathing can ground you in difficult moments and help you regain control. In this light, sobriety becomes more than an individual’s path; it’s a journey strengthened by connection, self-awareness, and small, powerful tools that make lasting change possible.

S3: E7: The Resilience Playbook: VASFAA, Escape Room, and D&D
In this episode, we take you inside the recent Virginia Association conference held in Norfolk, highlighting the shared experiences that connect members across the SASFAA region. Even if you’re from Florida, South Carolina, or Tennessee, no matter where you are, the challenges are basically the same. Different states but same OB3, same deadlines, and same whiplash announcements. This conference had a little bit of everything. An escape room (because nothing says, “professional development” like "get me out of here!"), leadership lessons from behind the Dungeons & Dragons dungeon master screen, and plenty of creative ways people manage stress—think Scottish country dancing, baking side gigs, and concert-hopping road trips. Most importantly, we hear from VASFAA President Loretta Jones, who shares insights about the association’s charitable efforts supporting Bobby’s Pit Bull Rescue and Sanctuary in Spotsylvania County. Also, Loretta honors several VASFAA members whose hard work and dedication have made a lasting impact on the association. This episode is a reminder that while the work we do can be challenging, the people in SASFAA bring creativity, resilience, and a strong sense of community to everything they do.

S3:E6: From Huntsville with Heart: The AASFAA Community
Today’s episode is all about community, connection, and the energy that makes this profession so special. We’re taking you inside the recent Alabama Financial Aid Association Conference, held just a couple of weeks ago in Huntsville. AASFAA may be small, but it punches well above its weight; you can feel it in the leadership, hear it in the conversations, and see it in the camaraderie that carries throughout their annual conference. We’ll kick things off with a meaningful conversation around the association’s charitable work with the Alzheimer’s Association. Then, we’ll take you around the room, checking in with attendees and sponsors to capture the pulse of the conference, before wrapping up with AASFAA President Jamie Burt from the University of Alabama. In addition, today we give you a quick look at what’s coming up on Swoonpies and Money: this week, Daniel Barkowitz sits down with FAFSA Program Executive Director Aaron Lemon-Strauss to break down new fraud-detection strategies and identity verification updates from the Department of Education. In the coming weeks, we’ve got more conference coverage from Virginia, a conversation with Dr. Happy focusing on mindset and holistic recovery, then Sam Hicks and friends continue to explore the question “What keeps you up at night?” with a deep dive into Dungeon Crawler Carl.

S3:E4: Cancer Journey: One More Day To Be Alive
This deeply moving episode returns to a theme we first introduced Swoonpies and Money last year: sharing perspectives that reach beyond financial aid and the rhythms of our daily routines. It centers on the human experience of living with cancer, told through one person's extraordinary and transformative journey. Samantha Dunman (aka Dr. Happy) sits down with a three-time cancer survivor whose story is not defined by fear, but by courage, resilience, and profound self-discovery.Rather than focusing on clinical details, their conversation unfolds the emotional and spiritual landscape of a life interrupted yet awakened by diagnosis. Together, they explore what it means to face reality without labeling it as “good” or “bad,” but instead meeting each moment with honesty and grace. This is a conversation about standing in the unknown and choosing faith anyway. About finding stillness in the chaos, presence in the pain, and meaning in every breath. It’s a powerful reminder that even in life’s most uncertain moments, there is beauty to be found, and that simply being alive is, in itself, a gift.

S3:E2: SASFAA Conference Day 2 - The 2026 Swoonie Awards!
In this episode, we’re bringing you something special, the 2026 Swoonie Award ceremony.Recorded live during day 2 of the SASFAA conference luncheon, this is our association’s version of the Oscars, but better; the Oscars don’t have name badges, conference chicken, and OB3 updates. We start this episode with Bill and Sam Hicks breaking down how the awards came together and then you’ll hear a recording from the stage with no pomp and very little circumstance: nominations, presentations, winners. There was no red carpet. No paparazzi. Nothing for TMZ to overanalyze. Seriously, there are no videos and few pictures of the ceremony. Which means there’s almost no record of this event even happening, except this episode. So, if you’ve ever wanted to say “I was there” without actually being there… this is your chance.

S3:E1: SASFAA Annual Conference - Day 1
Welcome to Swoon Pies and Money, Season 3. That’s right, we’re starting our third season. Why? Because we can. The Swoonpies team has been on the road for the last month, covering the NASFAA Leadership and Legislative Conference, the SASFAA Annual Conference, and our live coverage of the FSA Conference. Many of you completed the trifecta along with us, so you know that being out of the office that long requires checking in with your boss and acknowledging your day job. We’re no different here at Swoon Pies — which means we’ve got a bit of a backlog when it comes to cranking out the podcast. Now, about Season 3, we’re starting, appropriately, with our most celebrated event of the year: the Annual Conference. We gathered so much great content at this year's conference that we’re spreading it across three episodes. Today, we’re starting with Day One. First, you’ll hear from Lynn Ivy, founder of The Ivy, the conference charity selected by Joan. This is a remarkable organization that supports people living with neurodegenerative diseases like dementia, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s — and it also creates a space for their caregivers to connect with one another. Then we’ll feature conversations with several conference attendees:Rachelle Feldman, our Legislative Chair;Celena Tulloss, winner of the NASFAA Regional Leadership Award;Zita Barree, winner of the SASFAA Honorary Lifetime Membership Award; The current and soon-to-be presidents of the Florida Association, Egan Hansonand Arminta Johnson. And we’ll introduce you to Dee Dee Carter from UNC Greensboro, a reminder that one of the benefits of any conference is the chance to sit down at lunch or dinner with someone you don’t know, start a conversation, and walk away with a new friend.

S2:E19: Live FSA Coverage Day 2: "Everything is up to date in Kansas City."

Today, we were joined by two SASFAA luminaries and Swoonpies favorites, Katie Conrad and Brad Barnett. Guided by Daniel, they gave a thoughtful and detailed review of today's program. S2:E15: NASFAA LLC Part 1
The Swoonpies crew has been on the road for the past couple of weeks at the NASFAA Leadership & Legislative Conference, held somewhere just south of the Arctic Circle… also known as Washington, D.C., and then straight on to our own annual conference, which just wrapped in Charlotte. We’re kicking off our LLC coverage today with Part 1 of a two-part series. In this episode, you’ll hear conversations recorded on the ground at Leadership — the insights, the strategy, and yes, a little bit of the news that only happens when financial aid professionals gather in one place to talk policy and the future of our work. Part 2 is coming your way in just a couple of days.First up, you will hear from Melanie Storey, NASFAA’s President & CEO, with a thoughtful conversation about leadership and advocacy. Then we’re joined by Allie Arcese, NASFAA’s Senior Director of Strategic Communications, to unpack messaging, Off-The-Cuff origins, and what it really takes to move the needle in D.C.We close out with Emily Osborn, Senior Director of Financial Aid at Western Governors University, who presented in the Strategic Enrollment Management track at Leadership. And I strongly recommend you listen all the way to the end because Emily takes us from OB3 to Icelandic traditions and Nordic folklore. I promise you, that kind of content whiplash exists in exactly one place… and that’s Swoonpies and Money.

S2:E14: A Brief Timeout from OB3

S2:E13: Preparing for OB3 Webinar: What Financial Aid Leaders are Saying
As we unpack the NPRM, the countdown to OB3 and the need for preparation is getting real. Together, they examine proposed changes related to federal loan programs, Workforce Pell eligibility, repayment plans, and expanded institutional accountability requirements across varied institution types.Programming note: The College Aid Services webinar was presented prior to the NPRM publication, with many details still unknown. Notwithstanding, the observations on operational readiness and compliance considerations to staffing, communication, and change management are firmlygrounded in what campuses are facing. Whether you’re deep in planning or still figuring out where to start, this episode offers actionable insights to help your team face OB3 with clarity and confidence.

S2:E12: Medical School Panel wrestles with OB3
Today’s episode is about the elephant in the room, OB3. And let’s be clear: this isn’t a subtle elephant. It’s enormous, standing on the table, demanding the attention of everyone in higher education. No one can pretend they don’t see it.Emily Baldwin moderates a powerhouse panel on how medical schools are managing the rollout of OB3, and what it means for incoming classes and institutions. She’s joined by Joan Bailey from the University of South Florida, Dr. Heather Boutell of Vanderbilt University, Johnathan Chancellor from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), Veronica Herrera with Experian, Dr. Mark Justice from the University of Miami, and Dr. Holly Gilliam from the University of South Carolina. The conversation gets straight to the point: institutional communication strategy, enrollment impact, operational and systems strain, and why private loans, and the immediate need for credit education, are suddenly front and center. If OB3 is anywhere on your agenda, you don’t want to miss this conversation, just like you can’t miss that elephant!

S2:E4: Special Edition: A conversation with Neg Reg negotiators and a Mercer pulse check
Welcome to a special edition of Swoonpies and Money. Today, we’re peeling back the curtain on one of the most consequential—and misunderstood—rituals in higher education policymaking: negotiated rulemaking. Think of “Neg Reg” as the Department of Education’s version of group therapy—except instead of talking feelings, they’re hashing out the fine print of federal regulations that will have a profound impact on all of us.To help make sense of it all, Daniel Barkowitz sits down with two of the appointed negotiators who’ve been in the room trying to shape the future of higher education policy. And because every federal rule eventually lands on a campus doorstep, we’ll also check in with the good folks at Mercer University for a ground-level view of how OBBA is starting to ripple through their operations. So, settle in for this timely episode of Swoonpies and Money—where big policy meets campus reality, and the sausage-making of higher ed gets a little sunlight.

Episode #9: Swoonpies Was in the Room Where It Happened – NASFAA Part 1
There was a lot to unpack from the NASFAA Conference in Anaheim. So much, in fact, that we’re bringing it to you in two full episodes. This week, you’ll hear a mashup of highlights from the entire week—the cream of our profession losing their minds at the opening session, unscripted moments, sharp insights, and the unmistakable energy that only the SASFAA travel troupe can bring. And by the way, can you guess which FAA region showed up and stood out? Winner of the 5K race? Trivia team champs? Recipients of all three meritorious achievement awards, and the loudest cheering section at the opening session? Yup. You guessed it, SASFAA took home all the unofficial trophies and left the other associations to wonder, what’s in the water down there? You’ll hear from an All Star SASFAA cast, including Jackie Copeland, Rachelle Feldman, Daniel Barkowitz, Sharon Oliver, Michael Morgan, Sam Hicks, and a breathless Brad Barnett charging to the 5K finish line. We also have soundbites from NASFAA National Chair Kristi Jovell (present then/past now). And it was really no surprise to see the high energy, recently appointed NASFAA President & CEO Melanie Story, begin her public festivities encouraging runners by juggling pom-poms, poster signs, cowbells and a large cup of coffee during the 5k. That was five objects with two hands – I think NASFAA got the right person. And most importantly, you’ll hear an inspiring conversation with Jordan Barrera from Higher Ground, NASFAA’s 2025 selected charity. Her story is the soul of this episode—and a reminder of why the work we do matters. Get ready—NASFAA Part 1 starts now.

Recorded live at the FASFAA Conference, this episode of Swoonpies and Money brings you a mix of vision, reflection, creativity—and yes, with a touch of technical imperfection. Though our gear may have glitched, the FASFAA voices you'll hear cut through with clarity, heart, and purpose. We begin with the talented Lakeisha Sanders, as she rehearses potential podcast intros and outros full of soul and sparkle. Then, we speak with Sylvia Haas, CEO of Opportunity Community Ability, the conference’s featured charity, in a conversation about connection, dignity, and the deeper purpose. From there, we shift into powerful leadership perspectives from Alicia Keaton and David Alexander, followed by a live creative jam session with Shannon Jones and Concepta Williamson, as they workshop a fresh, “sassy” idea for a future segment. We close with a presidential trifecta: President-elect Jessica Ly’s acceptance speech rings out with hope and momentum (gym acoustics and all), and our sit-down with Egan Hansen brings insight, humor, and the occasional unexpected Sand Hill Crane pecking sound, courtesy of our janky AV setup. And finally, we end with a sincere reflection from Past President Mia Mwango, who looks back on her term with grace, gratitude, and vision. So sit down, relax and relive the energy of the FASFAA Conference—one inspiring voice at a time.
