Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep. 144
Been a busy summer for both Paul and I.In this episode we covered:* Regina City Council’s new budget process.* How media coverage distorts municipal budgeting.* Everyday challenges facing Saskatoon and Regina, from overdoses to late-night empty buses to the shifting Cathedral neighbourhood.* The controversy behind the province’s $187-million water bomber purchase, conflict of interest allegations, and ongoing accountability gaps in government spending. * Eroding Saskatchewan media coverage following Adam Hunter’s departure from CBC and increasing consolidation by private owners. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide, Ep: 143
In this episode, Tammy and Paul dive into the latest buzz around pop star Chappell Roan’s hit song “The Subway,” which unexpectedly put Saskatchewan on the pop culture map. We critically examine the disconnect between Roan’s celebratory tone and the province’s social realities, including human rights concerns. We talk Saskatchewan politics, wildfire management, economic impacts, and Saskatchewan Party dynamics. Let’s just say we’re skeptical about the province’s prospects for opposition and reform from within. Can celebrity activism ignite accountability where political will falters? Or can pressure from outside forces bring about the changes Saskatchewan needs? This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep 141
We had an in-depth discussion on the leadership of Mark Carney: promises versus reality, federal austerity plans, and skepticism over dramatic cuts to CBC and Via Rail. We also took an inside look at turmoil within the Saskatchewan Party following the abrupt exit of executive director Patrick Bundrock, including his rumoured tension with Premier Scott Moe and implications for Moe’s upcoming confidence vote fail.Provincial wildfire mismanagement rages on, with impacts ranging from diminished tourism (Waskesiu) to skyrocketing crop insurance costs amid natural disasters. As usual, there is little to no national media coverage of this Saskatchewan crisis and its economic fallout. We talked about the history of Country Thunder and other Saskatchewan music festivals, their importance to provincial identity, and under-promotion challenges. Finally, Tammy talked about some of the dirty tricks she used to pull, in close cooperation with the Sask Party caucus, on the John Gormley Live Show, much to the shock, horror and dismay of Dechene. I own every mistake I’ve ever made, but admittedly was surprised at Dechene’s reaction. I didn’t realize it was such a big secret. Of course we made s**t up all the time on that show, particularly those ‘Snap Polls’, or whatever they were called.“Does the sun shine directly out of Brad Wall’s ass? 100% of Saskatchewan people say YES - news at the top of the hour.”You thought that was real? Oh honey.Enjoy, T This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit tammyrobert.substack.com/subscribe

Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep. 140
In this episode Paul and I try to clear our summer brain fog, nostalgic for a time when a relentless stream of wildfires and smoke didn’t define our glorious but brief reprieve from the snow in Saskatchewan. But this is the new normal: earlier, longer wildfire seasons and the persistent haze of smoke blanketing yards, outdoor pools and playgrounds. Meanwhile, as per normal in any kind of crisis, Scott Moe pretends nothing’s happening, downplaying climate change while crashing out elsewhere about something completely disconnected from the real life experience of Saskatchewan people. Dechene is not super happy with Prime Minister Mark Carney and his recent policy decisions, including cuts to the public service and wobbly outcomes of trade talks with the U.S. Premier Scott Moe’s horrific leadership has led him to believe his future rests in an exacerbated rural-urban political divide. He thinks we don’t notice his inability to manage his way out of a wet paper bag, as evidenced by the total failure of Regina’s new urgent care center, which has totally failed to deliver the promised 24/7 service.Moe has to quit, now. Anyone who knows and loves that man should be begging him to do so for his own good, and that of so many others. Enjoy, T This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep 139
Can’t actually believe it’s been six weeks since we released a podcast. Apologies. There’s been a lot going on.In this extended episode we discuss the Saskatchewan government’s handling of wildfires as well as their “decision” to continue burning coal. After spending time in Regina for the first time in years, Tammy rants about the state of Regina’s downtown, road construction and its overall infrastructure. Paul has questions on the push for a new baseball stadium in that city. Enjoy. This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep 138
In this episode…* Regina’s Fluoridation Debate: Councillor Bezo’s anti-fluoride push pushed back when his expert was discredited right in front of him.* Costco-GTH Controversy: Costco’s plan to build inside Regina city limits (and conveniently, on property owned by mega-Sask Party supporter Paul Hill) was threatened by a cheaper GTH deal, prompting Regina to pay $6.7M to keep them inside.* Regina’s Leadership Crisis: The city lacks key leaders (city manager, police chief, REAL CEO).* Scott Moe’s Flip-Flop: Premier Moe shifted from separatist rhetoric to pro-Canada stance amid NDP pressure and internal Saskatchewan Party unrest, with incoming leadership challenges from Jeremy Cockrill, Tim McLeod, and Bronwyn Eyre.* Saskatchewan Party Turmoil: Caucus tension and Moe’s failures fuel speculation he may not survive a fall leadership review (spoiler alert: he will if he’s allowed to continue manipulating the Sask Party’s membership demographic).* Polarization and Conservative Struggles: Conservative narratives, driven by CPC and media like Postmedia, creating fractured realities.Enjoy, Tammy This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep. 136
This was supposed to be an episode dedicated entirely to the REAL debacle, but we ended up working in a bit more federal election chat with the release of Rubicon Strategies, doing a bit deep dive on Saskatoon and Regina. Then we get into REAL which to me is so representative of the expensive, publicly-funded chaos and dysfunction in Saskatchewan government circles right now. It’s just got everything, from whipped and unskilled board members to the Sask Party’s grubby fingers all over it.An abject failure in leadership across the board, though to be fair I need to see more from Chad Bachynski before making a decision on his competencies. I can’t be impressed out of the gate by anyone who ran for an important role that he didn’t actually think he’d win.Talk soon, T This is a public episode. We recorded this episode on Friday evening, but my weekend got away from me.In it we talk federal election politics in Saskatchewan, as well as this gong show involving Dollarama Donna Harpauer here, Sask Party MLA for Humboldt, Racquel Hilbert. This is just an excerpt of her performance in the Leg that day, which I said I’d include in the show notes:Enjoy, T This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep 134
Here’s your show notes:Okay it’s not that bad, but we are kind of all over the place, from the City of Regina’s budget shitshow to the Scott Moe shitshow.Perhaps more entertainingly(?), in this episode we address my relationship with the male species of Saskatchewan.“She hates men!”Heard it time and again.Nothing could be further from the truth. I adore men. Real men.The kind who’ve wrestled with real problems in the real world - which is not Saskatchewan - and came out scarred but still standing. The problem is I’ve met too many real and good men everywhere but here to continue to excuse or ignore the reality of the Mediocre Saskatchewan Male™ (MSM). The more I get away from it, the more I realize how unique these phenomenons, much like the MSM, are to this province. There is a legitimate crisis of masculinity in the province and too many women think it’s normal, which is kind of sad. It’s not, it’s just very Saskatchewan - remote, sparsely populated, highly insulated from any kind of real adversity.I’m sorry, it’s the truth. I’ve traveled a lot, lived for extended periods of time on three continents. In my honest opinion, Saskatchewan men can be a special kind of soft, like I’ve never seen anywhere else.If you’re a dude born and raised in Saskatchewan, you think an actual disaster is a slow drive-thru. You’re untested by anything harder than a woman who thinks independently. At the least, you haven’t been exposed to very many. Your biggest natural threat is the mosquito. The heaviest weights on your shoulders? Self-inflicted: you shackled yourself to the girl next door because it was low-effort; coasted into an unsatisfying gig that pays the bills; chugged way too many Pil because the Leafs lost. They’re the Leafs, of course they lost.Saskatchewan is the place where bros everywhere - including its former premier - worship a Youtuber who models himself after a Looney Tunes hillbilly and boasts a stage name that evokes premature ejaculation.I’m trying to envisage Roy Romanow watching one of those videos and I just can’t.In my opinion, real men forge their own paths and build their own empires. They don’t cling to government handouts while pretending they got rich thanks to their keen business acumen, or need to know someone who can put a thumb on a scale to get ahead. They don’t brag about being giant fish in the tiniest of ponds. Scott Moe is the patron saint of the MSM. They relate to him. He is walking, talking proof you don’t need grit, vision, or a spine to succeed in Saskatchewan. A pickup truck, penis and a pulse will get a guy everywhere. That and donate to the Sask Party? Sky’s the limit baby.Maybe I am sick of it. Why aren’t you? Pretty sure plenty of Saskatchewan women agree with me. I’m not out here swinging a spotlight around looking for anyone’s insecurities. I’m just holding up a mirror to the general public. It’s certainly not all Saskatchewan men - scroll back up if you need to read the criteria again. There are plenty of stellar men in my life who laugh with me at the moniker - who recognize I polarize to make you think, not think like me. If me calling out the Mediocre Saskatchewan Male still makes you feel seen, that’s a you problem. I think we talked about the Saskatchewan budget too.🤷🏻♀️T. This is a public episode. Pipe To Pivot: Dismantling the Lake Diefenbaker Irrigation Debacle, Chapter 2
In this episode we go back to the beginning - the very beginning. From Prime Minister John Diefenbaker’s vision for the project to Tommy Douglas’s enthusiastic cheerleading to Ralph Goodale refusing to let it go, this is one mega project that has been quite the multi-partisan affair over the last 70 years or so.Because everything old is new again, in this episode we reference a few old newspaper articles which are highly relevant today. I’ve included them here. Enjoy, TFrom a July 1967 edition of the Toronto Star covering the grand opening: This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep 131
We recorded this one just on Monday so it’s pretty fresh. After a quick recap of Sunday’s brilliant (in my opinion, not so much Dechene’s) Superbowl halftime performance, we get into the GOP lobbyist who Saskatchewan residents have been paying $33,000 USD per month for an eye-watering 16 years. In the episode I reference a few documents that I’ll link to here.Click here for a copy of Nelson Mullins (via David Wilkins) current contract with the Government of Saskatchewan, or here for a copy of same with our Crown Investments Corporation. This is the most recent detailed 6-month report from Nelson Mullins, which lists its lobby activities for Saskatchewan.I published a written piece on this today: What I published out today contains more detail than I had when we recorded on Monday, so we’ll also be talking more about this in an upcoming recording.Stay warm, T This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep 130
In which Dechene torments me with clips of Scott Moe in a news event earlier today, and I tell stories about what I learned when I spent a year living in the middle of a drug-running corridor from South America to Mexico.Spoiler alert: I didn’t learn that the Sinaloa cartel is hot for the Saskatchewan to North Dakota opioid trade. There are no leaders in Saskatchewan right now. We need them, desperately. For example, it floors me that nobody is coming out, bare-knuckled and ready to get bloody for Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry, which is more at risk right now than any other in the province. Put simply, Premier Scott Moe cannot simultaneously serve both the needs of Donald Trump and the people of Saskatchewan, yet that is precisely what he’s trying to do. Pipe To Pivot: Dismantling the Lake Diefenbaker Irrigation Debacle, Chapter 1
A Saskatchewan Survivor’s Guide podcast.Whew! That’s a whole bunch of words to tell you we’re doing a spinoff devoted to Ty Thiessen’s extraordinary knowledge of the Sask Party government’s Westside Irrigation Rehabilitation Project (WIRP). Specifically, why this project is a smoking dumpster fire of red flags.Slated to cost the Saskatchewan taxpayer, conservatively, $1.15bil, the WIRP is only the first phase of an ambitious, if not illogical plan to connect Lake Diefenbaker to an irrigation corridor that extends as far north as Battleford (like what?)I’ll let Ty tell you the rest, because as you’re about to hear, he knows the WIRP better than anyone. You can read what he’s already written about it for Postmedia here and here (as well as a banger on Saskatchewan’s flawed potash royalty structure here). We’re calling this a “limited series”, in that we are limited by the material. We’ll talk about the history and questions swirling around the project for as long as it takes - right now we’re thinking about six episodes. Then we’ll update as new information becomes available, or changes are made to the project. That said, we’re not limited by the Sask Party’s fiscal stupidity - under current leadership, it truly appears to know no bounds. Ty is well on his way to a bright future in fiscal leadership, so let’s let him cook now. Meanwhile, the Mom in me is really looking forward to watching him grow in his broadcasting skills and ability to communicate his research and knowledge.Oh one last thing - I’m having Ty set up a Patreon account for this podcast. Beyond a token towards minimal production costs, all of what you donate there will go to Ty. He hasn’t set it up yet though, so I don’t have a link - get on it young man! 😏Talk soon, T This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survival Guide: Ep 128
We talked the Westside Diefenbaker Irrigation project with special guest and agriculture economist wunderkind Ty Thiessen. Throughout the episode we reference a KPMG report, which can be found here. This monolithic boondoggle is worthy of its own show, as is the extraordinary detail to which Ty has researched this project to date. So, we’re going to do one. Watch for a spinoff of this podcast coming in the next few weeks featuring Ty, hosted by myself. It doesn’t have a name yet; we’re letting Ty lead on all fronts so we’ll see what comes together. You’ll know the first episode when you get it, don’t worry. That’s what has impressed me most about this kid (at 19, he’s very much a kid): his ability to communicate his knowledge is already vastly superior to the majority of the talking heads and politicians we’re forced to hear every day. We’re not the only ones who’ve taken notice; Ty has written multiple op-eds in the Star Phoenix and Leader Post over the last year (though strangely, only one seems to be featured on his writer’s page 🧐.)We’re going to go in-depth, combining Ty’s extraordinary knowledge of the industry, the economy and the project with my understanding of the history and politics behind Saskatchewan megaprojects like this one. It’ll be a limited series, in that we’ll go until the we’ve run out of information to share or the project is cancelled, whichever comes first. Further, Mama Tammy (this all makes me feel real old lol) says Ty’s university education is what really comes first and foremost, so we’ll be recording around his workload and school schedule.I truly see no sane world where the Westside Diefenbaker Irrigation project can go ahead. I’m looking forward to hopefully making any of it make sense. That said, after just a few hours of President Donald Trump 2: Bigger Better Dumber, I don’t see much of a sane world anywhere. Dechene and I get into my experience living both ends of the conservative rage hoe, then I rage some more about the fact the Sask NDP caucus has been muzzled from speaking out on the massive issues impacting our world right now. What was the point of growing the Saskatchewan NDP Opposition caucus they’re just going to be marginalized and suppressed by their own party? Saskatchewan Survivors' Guide: Ep. 125
We looked at both Scott Moe and Carla Beck’s year-end interviews with Saskatchewan reporters and surprise! We roast both of them.In respect to Carla Beck, we discussed the bombshell she dropped that she and Scott Moe made some kind of pre-election pact? While Beck made it sound par for the course, I can assure you that it is not. That kind of pre-election meeting, supposedly to define boundaries for civil discourse between Saskatchewan’s political parties, is not some kind of tradition. What Beck claims to have agreed to with Scott Moe is ridiculous. I don’t appreciate any two Saskatchewan residents - which is all she and Scott Moe are - taking it upon themselves to decide what we should or shouldn’t know during a writ period. Then we talked about the pulsating red flags you can see from space all over Scott Moe, Stephen Harper and their relationship with India, which seems to have been expressly set up to undermine Canada’s foreign policy and relationship with that country.I want to be abundantly clear: I love the idea of safely, humanely, ethically and with dignity, bringing people into this vast, empty province in the middle of nowhere - we’ve got the room. Giving them the tools and support they need to achieve even simple dreams of making the one life we’re all given, better. Those dreams are often predicated on simple s**t you and I have taken for granted every day since we were born.Saskatchewan could be a beautiful new home to so many people. What I hate is the exploitation of new, vulnerable people in Canada, who’ve fled oppression so they can come work in some Sask Party-supporting a*****e’s collection of rural Tim Hortons franchises while getting hauled en masse to rig vote in Sask party nomination races (absolutely true story). We need to be able to talk about what’s happening with the Sask Party, one of the most corrupt and disturbing government’s Saskatchewan has ever had, and the exploitation of immigrants and foreign affairs. So we will. There is something very, very wrong with Scott Moe’s relationship with India and we must get to the bottom of it. There will be more on this.Talk soon, T This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survivors' Guide: Ep 124
We talk to former senior aide to United States congressman Seth Moulton, Saskatoon's Matt Chilliak, on his front row experience of the US election campaign & its aftermath on the US Dems.Chilliak played an unexpected role in a political reckoning that began almost the day after Trump won, again. You might have read about it in the NY Times, or what he wrote aboutit in a piece for The Hill.Chilliak is someone who I (Tammy R) should likely not have the privilege of calling a friend. He’s someone who has disagreed vehemently with me over the years. We’ve sat across from each other at some nasty and contentious campaign tables. He’s roasted me legitimately (I’m well aware I often deserve it) without insulting my weight or any aspect of my body or personality lol.I mean seriously, in the political world I’ve lived in for the last twenty years, that’s a big deal. That kind of maturity, neverminding surviving a public spotlight like he just did, is one reason I suspect Chilliak leaving Saskatchewan politics behind was the smartest thing he ever did and he will undoubtedly continue to do amazing things in the American political system.I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed the conversation. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep 121
We recorded this on Sunday, but I held it because I was wanted to get this companion piece published first:In it I included a graphic that I was originally only going to share with paid subscribers, but then remembered it’s Christmas and decided to share it with everyone:Anyway, I’m convinced that this issue is the number one issue corrupting the Sask Party right now. Taking away the political donation incentive would have an extensive impact on government operations. Everything would change, because it’s your money but all the Ps: procurement, policies, priorities and projects are all determined by Sask Party donors’ needs - not yours. That’s f*****g insane. This kind of self-serving, greedy, corrupt b******t is what got the United Health CEO shot dead last week. People are sick of it. Fed right up. Maybe even in Saskatchewan someday. I’m going to write another piece to follow the one I just published, specifically focusing on the fact the Sask Party’s single highest donation since 2016 came from India. I wrote about that donation last year, but that was before diplomatic relations between India and Canada exploded. Now when I looked at it with fresh eyes, I realize how much I missed. There’s something going on between India, Canada, Stephen Harper and Scott Moe. I’m positive it’s at least one reason Moe looked like he was about to curl up and die at the prospect of losing the 2024 election.Anyway, enjoy this podcast and talk soon, T This is a public episode. Dechene’s back from a tour of Alberta’s heartland. In a SUV! Did he come back flying F*ck Trudeau flags? We find out.We also talk about the Conservative Party of Canada’s latest fun attack on municipal politicians. At this point, between PP referring to municipal politicians as “incompetent, greedy, money-hungry” and the interference we saw the CPC try to pull during Regina’s municipal election, which we also talked about some more, I think this is foreshadowing a darker future agenda. We talked about the first week in this new Legislative session - I’ve already written how I felt about it. Spoiler alert: it hasn’t changed. Can the NDP make headway on the issues currently impacting Saskatchewan residents the most?Or are they going to keep talking about their gas tax campaign promise? That and more. Enjoy! I think I talked far more than Dechene in this one, which addresses what I covered in my last written post: I don’t understand what happened to Bronwyn Eyre. Maybe it’s me, just not grasping what that kind of power does to a person. I remember her being kooky and different, but not… whatever this is. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep 117
There’s a lot going on at the moment in various global political spheres, but Regina, Saskatchewan is certainly giving all it’s got on crazy. Nobody knows more about all that than Dechene, seriously. We talked about that, as well the inanity of Scott Moe claiming he “misspoke” when he said the first thing he’d do on his first day of his next term was create a directive on children’s genitalia. Who does that, nevermind says that? Then instead of explaining that he misspoke because he didn’t have all the information or had time to pause and reflect on what a horrible thing he’d done, Scooter advised that he sometimes misspeaks because he doesn’t think.Because he’s dumb, IOW. I mean, maybe we should give him props for facing the reality of who he is - but guess what? I don’t. We also talked about Moe’s new Cabinet. So much depth. So much competency… just kidding omg it’s frightening levels of stupid. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide: Ep. 116
Like I said, it’s feast or famine around here, right? We recorded again yesterday and I see Dechene cut the s**t out of it; thank goodness for that. Did I babble incoherently? Oh yes, I sure did. I feel sorry for Dechene (not really) having to go back and make sense of me. Anyway what’s left is hopefully a relatively decent discussion on the election events of the last week, including our neighbours to the south. We’re as confused as everybody else who doesn’t understand why half of our friends and neighbours seem hellbent on pushing us to the brink of the abyss. But we tried.By the way, most of you have caught on to the fact that Paul Dechene is the definitive expert on Regina’s municipal election shenanigans. You can catch him and Aiden Morgan, another absolute Regina gem, on 91.3 FM CJTR, Regina's Community Radio, discussing the latest in civic politics tonight. Tomorrow the broadcast will be available as a podcast here.Regina is Reginaing so hard right now and it’s mighty entertaining, so have a listen.Enjoy, ttyl. T This is a public episode. Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide Ep 115
I don’t have much to say about anything this morning, besides that we recorded this yesterday morning. You know, in the Before Times. I’m just kidding - I’m not quite on board with the fullblown End of America As We Know It themes this morning. However, this is not the world many of us were hoping to wake up to, undoubtedly. The reality is the future hasn’t happened yet. We’re here, right now, and everything’s fine. All we can do is live our best lives and hope for the best.I think? Something like that, I’m sure.Anyhoo, do yourself a favour and bingewatch Emily in Paris or something today. Or true crime documentaries, in case you need a reminder that your life isn’t actually the worst, per say. Stay off social media if you can (will I take my own advice? probably not).Remember, we’re using ‘F**k Scott Moe’ as our theme song because, well, is there a more perfect theme song? The artist wants to remain anonymous, but if you’re loving this song as much as we are you can find and support it here. $1 from every donation goes to the artist to cover costs, because making great s**t ain’t free. The Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide Ep 114
While “rapid response” is a communications skill I think I’m slowly beginning to master, “rapid analysis” is most certainly not. It’s going to take a while to process what happened last night. It should - it’s a lot of new information about the province we live in. Therefore in the spirit of initial reaction, please accept this offering of hot takes Dechene and I recorded this morning, waking up to another four years of Sask Party government and at least another year or two of Scooter’s voice. Goddamit you guys. Like WHY?Anyway, Duchene and I are well aware that there is no one good answer to the problem of Saskatchewan. Enjoy listening to us try to find one anyway.OH! We thought it made sense to start using ‘F**k Scott Moe’ as our theme song because, well, is there a more perfect theme song? The artist wants to remain anonymous, but if you’re loving this song as much as we are you can find and support it here. $1 from every donation goes to the artist to cover costs, because making great s**t ain’t free. The Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide, Ep. 112
I know, two podcast releases in one day? Madness, but here we are.Full disclosure: Cathy Sproule is one of my closest people. I’m not using “friends” or “family” because to me, she’s both. She supported me through some mind-numbingly difficult times - made me feel like a human being, when I just didn’t. To give you an idea of her character, Cathy has traveled internationally with my kid… I don’t even like doing that. My favorite Cathy story is that she joined us for my 40th birthday party in Vegas but didn’t come to Magic Mike because she was an elected official. 😂 Now we’re definitely going to go back and do Vegas properly (she’s already gone once without me - RUDE.)Anyway, in this episode we talked about Sproule’s longtime experience in the Legislature in Opposition, on the Legislature floor that Randy Weekes revealed to be the toxic shitfest that it is. Cathy surprised me more than a few times throughout this discussion with her candor, but that’s another reason I love her - she doesn’t take b******t, nor does she dole it out.I’ll save you a long rambling read here and let you get on with listening. Remember when we started doing this and I was all “we’re going to have a schedule”?Turns out neither Dechene and I are “schedule” people, per say. 😂We recorded this one on Thursday October 24, 2024. I think - these last days of the election are kind of running together.Personally, I’ll be glad when this writ period is over. The Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide, Ep. 108
This pod is shorter than usual and thank goodness for that, because I was all over the map. Dechene is awesome as usual. We recorded immediately after last night’s debate. I struggled to come up with anything useful, so don’t judge me. Again this morning, I still don’t feel like I have anything profound to add.I know for sure the format was garbage. I think it was trying to be an American-style debate - opening the floor for three minutes and assuming Beck and Moe would duke it out. That didn’t work. Moe had been coached not to interrupt Beck or seem like the aggressor in any way, which gave Beck a fair amount of floor time. She used that time to repeat NDP talking points, which she struggled with at times.Beck was too coached, seemingly by a former broadcaster. The result was a cadence and pronunciation that, at times, was so robotic and contrived it was cringey. Going into the debate I figured Beck would thrive as herself, because she’s quite good at holding her own in the Legislature against Moe. When she tripped on the word “Premier”, I assumed it was nerves. As the hour continued however, it got worse. She was thinking too much, not about what she was saying but how she was saying it.Moe was Moe. There was plenty of stupid faces, mouthbreathing and at times his eyes were shifting so hard I thought one of them was going to pop out of its socket, bounce across the floor and into the pit in front of him. I was hoping for some Kamala-style moments from Beck - getting under Moe’s skin - but it didn’t really happen. As the night wore on he got a bit shoutier, interjecting weird chirps about Trudeau, but he was trying to control himself and mostly, he did.One thing that became obvious to me is the Saskatchewan NDP doesn’t grasp that the Sask Party brand is not the problem - Scott Moe is the problem. If the Sask Party punted Moe and Brad Wall 2.0 rolled up tomorrow to lead it, all traces of Moe would be fumigated and forgotten. Yet Beck didn’t really attack Moe as a leader at all. She had so much to work with, including his human rights-stripping behaviour of just a few months ago. Isn’t it amazing that the Sask Party needed an “emergency debate” on schools, kids and their pronouns, like five minutes ago, but that s**t hasn’t come up once on the campaign trail? It needed to be thrown in his face last night and it wasn’t. So much for protecting trans kids. It would have mattered, alot, if Beck had made an effort to force Scott Moe to defend his authoritarian and frankly, frightening attitude towards them, in front of the entire province. When Moe was babbling about where the NDP was going to get the money for their promises, the only response should have been asking where the hell he’s going to get the billions of dollars he’s about to piss away on an irrigation project that he refuses to produce a feasibility report for, because it’s not feasible. You want to build a Starbucks on an urban street corner? Starbucks is still going to need a feasibility report. There is not a competent, successful, normal politician alive who would try to pull this shady crap over voters. No businessperson would ever invest a freaking dollar of their own money in anything without a feasibility report - but Scott Moe is about to do it with your money. Somehow though, he managed to make that point about the NDP, repeatedly. That was disappointing. As for moving the needle on undecided voters: did they know about the debate? Did they watch it? Dechene and I realized while we were recording that we didn’t know where and how it was distributed. Presumably it was broadcast on cable TV, which is where most seniors would have watched it. To reach a broader audience, each party will now edit their winning moments and start pushing those out. Both parties have something to work with, but I suspect Moe’s will be edited fraudulently, so watch for that. Speaking of which - I don’t love that the Legislature was used for last night’s debate. That’s our house, not the NDP’s, the media’s or Sask Party’s. Did they ask us? No, they didn’t. I personally think hosting a purely political, non-Legislative event in that space defiled it a bit. Further, it was a massive distraction from the leaders themselves and what they were saying. Let’s go back to neutral, black curtained backdrops so we can focus on the task at hand. I guess I hope whoever dreamt up last night’s debate is not responsible for the next one.If I was forced to tell you now, I’d have to say the debate was a draw. I’m not sure Moe was framed poorly enough to lose votes, nor did Beck necessarily shine as bright as she needed to in order to win the votes she needs, including in rural Saskatchewan.By the way… does Murray Mandryk know what year it is? That question about rural Saskatchewan “shrinking” was a) bizarre and b) a huge gift to Scott Moe. In fact, I wonder if the Sask Party wrote that one. I’m not trying to pile on, but what the hell Mandryk?Anyway, this one isn’t my best work either, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. Maybe for that reason. :)TPS - I’m banned from Twitter this morning for this:Apparently this Tweet offended someone so much that they reported it, resulting in a ban the morning after the provincial debate. I’m sure my viral Tweet from yesterday on Scott Moe’s relationship with Stephen Harper and India didn’t help. Anyway, conveniently for a whole bunch of clowns, I’ve been silenced on the platform for… I don’t even know. Nor do I care - I didn’t try to “appeal” it or whatever. It’s true and I meant it. It’s no secret that Brad Wall and John Gormley gleefully tried to destroy my life and in some aspects, they did. I will never forget it and I won’t let either of set of fragile Old Balls forget it either - ever. Til they die. Thems the breaks when you’re a******s; I don’t make the rules. Have a great Thursday! The Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide, Ep. 107
Huge thank you to Randy Weekes for joining Paul and I for this special episode.Weekes is the consummate professional politician. He most definitely knows how to answer questions like one. :)For me, the takeaway from meeting and chatting with Randy Weekes is twofold:a) The situation in the Sask Party government’s offices in the Legislature (likely across the province) is dangerously toxic and more people will get hurt - perhaps seriously - if or when Scott Moe is returned to power over those offices. b) I think too much in black and white. If you’re laughing at that last one, so am I. We both know it’s true lol.We touched on a broad range of subjects but the one that stands out for me was around leadership. Weekes sat in the Sask Party caucus under the leadership of Elwin Hermanson, Brad Wall and Scott Moe, so I asked him whether what we’re seeing today would have happened under the previous leader or leaders.I’ll let you hear his answer for yourself. Before you listen, if you haven’t already you should read the full text of the statement Weekes released to media before joining our show:“Before the people of Saskatchewan go to the polls on Oct.28th, I feel they should know about the racist policies and attitudes of the Saskatchewan Party government and some of their MLAs.1.Racist PoliciesAs part of a new "preferred nation" project, the province reserved Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) spots for people from specific countries of origin. Seven of the eight preferred nations are European: Czechia, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. The Minister responsible for the SINP Jeremy Harrison told his staff “we want a certain type of Immigrant.” What he meant was excluding people from Africa, Philippines, Latin countries and many others from around the world.Saskatchewan immigration lawyer Chris Veeman said: “It just sort of sends the message that these are the places that the province is interested in and if you’re not from those places, maybe you’re not the No. 1 priority of the government. I feel it’s unjust, unfair, to be honest. Because I feel everyone deserves their own chance.” 2. Racist MLAs:On April 24th, 2023, a young Black woman employed in the Saskatchewan Party caucus office experienced a racist incident with government caucus chair David Buckingham, who was speaking with the Government Whip Greg Ottenbreit in a Legislature hallway. The conversation topic included the repeated use of the “N” word, which was overheard by the Black staffer from her office nearby. Horrified by what she heard, she complained to the government caucus Chief of Staff Angela Currie.Buckingham and Ottenbreit ambushed the staffer to apologize, at which the young woman locked herself in her office because she was traumatized. When she eventually opened her door, she listened without comment. She also reported the incident to human resources.Buckingham and Ottenbreit were told to take sensitivity training. Both remained in positions of authority. The staffer was forced to continue working them in caucus. After this incident her job description changed with her responsibilities downgraded. Currie began bullying her, accusing her of not being a "team player". Eventually the young Black staffer found employment elsewhere in the legislative building. Currie told the staffer in a very offensive tone she was no longer needed and to get out of the caucus office, forcing her to leave without any of her personal belongings. The incident was reported to government deputy caucus chair Ken Francis. When confronted with this information, Currie denied the incident. The young woman remains in counselling today because of the abuse.Other racist incidents include the continued racist comments made to a visible minority in the Saskatchewan Party caucus by the member from Kindersley Ken Francis. I spoke to the targeted MLA about how he felt about the racist comments directed at him. Inititally he shrugged them off, but over time he shared with me his concerns about the racism directed at him.Another example that comes to mind again involves Sask Party MLA Greg Ottenbreit. He'd been invited to meet with a delegation from an anti-racism group visiting Yorkton, which included a young Muslim woman wearing a hijab. Ottenbreit went on a rant in front of this woman, complaining about her wearing of a hijab, creating discomfort for everyone in attendance. On another occasion, former Speaker Mark Docherty had invited an indigenous Elder and a Muslim Imam to bring greetings and pray at the opening of the Legislative Session. While the Imam was praying, Ottenbreit was noticably ignoring the service, pretending to be occupied with his Bible. When asked why he did that, his reply was "Because Muslims want to kill us."I hope this information helps the people of Saskatchewan make an informed decision on election day.” - Saskatchewan Speaker Randy Weekes, October 10, 2024 This is a public episode. The Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide, Ep. 106
Last weekend I asked Twitter what Dechene and I should talk about next; the response was overwhelming. Since there were so many issues, we recorded them on Monday (October 7, 2024) as their own episode. From asbestos in public infrastructure to the historical influence of the Saskatchewan Roughriders on provincial politics, we covered a lot of ground.Near the end you’ll be treated to my live, unvarnished howls of disbelief after coming across, in real time, the Sask Party’s campaign announcement about funding IVF and providing life-saving access to cancer testing… if re-elected.I am well-aware that self-administered HPV tests serve a useful purpose. But that’s not even what Moe announced; his exact words were “home self-screening option as an alternative to the Pap test.”Have you ever had a Pap test?No one who has, I promise you, has ever thought “You know, I could just as easily do this at home.”That is what I am reacting to in the podcast (and what I am still sitting in disbelief over two days days later): the audacity of dangling something so utterly basic in front of Saskatchewan voters and expecting a reward.Of campaigning on protecting a woman’s cervix. If the Saskatchewan Health Authority had announced, at any other time besides the 27-day period that occurs once every four years during which it would be viewed cynically, that they were making these tests available to Saskatchewan residents, it would have been widely applauded. The Sask Party would have greatly benefited from the residual approval. The exact same principle applies to funding IVF. Any time except the present an announcement like that coming from the Ministry of Health - heck, since it’s funding, not delivery-related it could have came from the Minister of Health - would have been embraced by Saskatchewan parents. The Sask Party would have basked in the approval afterglow.Instead, oafishly and obviously trying to leverage the basic products and services voters pay for as direct funders of the healthcare system suggests chaos in the backrooms of the Sask Party’s central campaign offices.Campaigning as an incumbent government is damn hard when your record is as bad as the Sask Party’s. Every proposed tweak and change can and probably should be perceived as an admission of failure. This, though, is far worse. What we’re seeing is indicative of a group of people - an organization - in existential crisis. We’re getting an extraordinary glimpse into a political party that has become so detached from its role in society - from reality - that it doesn’t know how to be real anymore. One other thing.A few of you pushed back on my comments on SUN issuing years of public statements regarding the chaotic, frightening conditions in their members’ workplaces - our health care facilities - but taking little other action as a labour representative. I opined that SUN’s ongoing messaging on overcrowded and understaffed ERs, minus any real action or consequences beyond being forced to continually raise the public’s threshold for hallway medicine horror stories, may have contributed to normalizing all of it in the collective mind. Some questioned what I think SUN should have done instead. The thing is, I get paid really good money to give out that kind of advice. Not in Saskatchewan, of course, but pretty much anywhere else. Once I’m retained, I immediately conduct an inventory of the individual or organization’s storytelling assets and liabilities. These tend to include but are not limited to: accessible and proprietary imagery/archives, trained spokespeople, former and existing narratives, buried narratives, unreleased narratives, ownership of digital platforms, privacy laws & regulations and legal issues pertaining to sharing information (the latter two can differ by sector and province/state). I will also create a historical editorial timeline of the issue and measure the client’s tolerance for taking communicative risks. Once I am satisfied I have enough information to do my job well, I feel confident enough to give advice on creating a strategy. In absence of any of that, all I can tell you I would have recommended SUN create more compelling visuals than we’ve ever seen before. This means no more billboards featuring one stoic nurse with their arms crossed and a quote about how bad things are in their workplace.Today, so much than that is necessary to create the emotions required to have an indelible impact on oversaturated, exhausted voters. It would require a technical communication strategy, including the best illustrators, animators and digital creators around to create something that is compelling, emotive and conveys the ultimate consequence of the Sask Party’s mismanagement of our health care facilities and the people who try to work in them: death. In the meantime, I’m going to continue to point out where I think labour can and should do better. It’s never been an easy fight, never will be - that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t talk about trying to be better.Talk soon, T This is a public episode. The Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide, Ep. 105
Happy Monday! In today’s episode, which was recorded yesterday morning (Sunday October 6, 2024), I wandered around while we chatted, not realizing my laptop mic was the one being recorded (as opposed to the one I was holding) so unfortunately my audio is kind of all over the map. But you’ll get the gist.I get candid about my sincere confusion regarding what the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation has been doing for… years? Holding a closed education forum with the former MLA for The Battlefords (who should NOT be appearing anywhere as Minister of Education) during a 27-day writ campaign is a weird move. I haven’t understood the STF for a long time. This has earned me the ire of more than a few teachers, but I’m sorry, I don’t blindly support anything. I can’t. I just don’t get it.Mandryk came up - specifically, why he doesn’t seem to ever evoke the decades of memory he very much possesses of Saskatchewan politics. He’s practically lived in the Legislature for 40 years, yet somehow still brings up Spudco? By the way, on the scale of scandals in the province, Spudco doesn’t even rate. If I ever hear that term again it’ll be too soon. The G.O.A.T. though: Stef Langenegger. Your favorite journalist’s favorite journalist. The woman is the consummate professional, protect her at all costs. She’s also just an amazing human being. We talk about her too.Anyway, we’re about to record a bonus episode, because we just didn’t get to cover everything yesterday, so you’ll get another one in the next few days. Thanks for listening! The Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide, Ep. 103
I need to start writing down what Dechene and I talk about right after we record. While my long-term memory is sharp, I tend to not be able to remember what I had for breakfast. We did definitely talk about the fact that Carla Beck is the first Saskatchewan NDP leader in almost twenty years who’s facing high expectations. Will anything less than forming government suffice for her supporters? If not, is there anyone waiting in the wings to take her spot?I think there is. We also discussed Sask Party MLA Rob Norris campaigning for current and petrified Sask Party MLA Ken Cheveldayoff. Norris, a long time federal Liberal and huge Justin Trudeau fan (despite the fact he now pretends otherwise), has become the anti-rabbit’s foot for Sask Party MLAs. Norris’s involvement, in my opinion, speaks volumes about the state of Chevy’s confidence in his campaign.I think at one point I said that the writ would drop today, but I was wrong. The Sask Party seemingly remembered, last minute, that today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and it would be super tacky to make today about them. So, the writ will drop tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, October 1st. It’s going to be brutal. I can’t wait. Episode 103 was recorded on Thursday September 26, 2024.Enjoy! This is a public episode. The Saskatchewan Survivor's Guide, Ep. 102
The word of the day is “interference”.Federal-political interference, via third-party groups, in municipal campaigns.Religious interference in the election of school board trustees.Sask Party jackoffs interfering in the delivery of services they know absolutely nothing about, like medicine and education. We talked about that and had a laugh over the Rosthern hospital sign unveiling disaster. The tragedy and weirdness that was Jim Prentice, Rachel Notley and the 2015 Alberta election - what lesson(s)-learned from Rachel Notley’s landslide NDP win in 2015 keep Moe and Sask Party brass awake night right now?Enjoy. This episode (102) was recorded on September 17, 2024.
