#110 | “Luke Cage”: The Black American Dream
Brandon, Ken & Ali recap, review, discuss, dissect, and stan over "Marvel's Luke Cage": the Netflix original series so popular it actually broke Netflix! Our discussion is split into non-spoiler and spoiler territory, with full coverage of all 13 episodes; the performances of Mike Colter, Simone Missick, Alfre Woodard, Mahershala Ali, Rosario Dawson, Dihann Carroll Jr., and the other great actors; how the series compares to "Jessica Jones" and "Daredevil", the blending of the 1970s aesthetic with modern-day sensibilities, the music, the action, the romance, the shade, the offended white TV critics, and more, including -- most/best of all -- the Blackness with a capital "B". #108 | Three Years’ Worth of Grave Dust
Lupita Nyong'o is back in a new movie, and this time she's not a CGI figure! Brandon, Kareem, Ken, and Ali review Disney's new biopic "Queen of Katwe", starring Lupita, David Oyelowo, and Madina Nalwanga. Spoiler alert: the movie's amazing. Go see it. Later, the guys discuss the original 1973 "The Exorcist", which Kareem finally got Brandon to see...and he discusses just how horrified he was. They also catch up with cable Black excellence "Atlanta" and "Queen Sugar" and discuss Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie's pending divorce, remembering "Space Ghost: Coast to Coast", David Simon geting too familiar with certain words that start with an "n", "She's Gotta Have It" and "Dear White People" being adapted to series by Netflix, Fantasia & Anthony Hamilton's "All Lives Matter" concert, and Don King tap dancing for the Republicans. We also pay our respects to actor Bill Nunn and rapper Shawty Lo, who passed away this week. SHOW NOTES: • 00:00:00: Intro/Film Reviews ??? "Queen of Katwe" (2016) ??? #107 | Brilliant But Overlooked: Cult TV Shows (feat. @akaAlibabwa)
In the first of a continuing series of episodes highlighting cult classics of all types - film, TV, music, and more - John, Brandon, Ken & Ali each share one of their favorite TV shows that unfortunately came and went without the fanfare and accolades it deserved. Each co-host picked one episode for everyone to watch, and that episode is used as the basis for a discussion about the show as a whole. John shares the smart, campy humor of ABC's "Ugly Betty" through the episode "A Tree Grows in Guadalajara" (S01E23), Brandon introduces everyone to Cartoon Network's deconstructed and subversive Hanna-Barbera revamp "Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated" with "The Legend of Alice May" (S01E06), Ken covers the surreal, sly comedy of Showtime's "Dead Like Me" with "Reapercussions" (S01E04), and Ali discusses the poignant sadness of the "6B" episode of FOX's sci-fi fantasy "Fringe". #106.5 | Bonus: Disney Getting Froggy with Black & Brown People (feat. @akaAlibabwa)
We usually save our off-topic convos for collected episodes, but this one deserved to be let out on its own. Brandon, Kareem, Ken & Ali discuss the controversy surrounding an offensive "brownface" Halloween costume Disney has licensed to promote its upcoming animated film "Moana". The discussion flows from there to what went wrong with Disney's "The Princess and the Frog", and why having the first Black Disney Princess be a frog for 80% of the runtime of the film was a problem. #106 | Who’s Your Zaddy? (feat. @akaAlibabwa)
Brandon, Kareem, John, Ken and Ali are back to talk about "Atlanta". A lot. So much so that you'll find extra "Atlanta" talk in the post-credits of this podcast. I guess it's safe to say it's absolutely awesome & Donald Glover and his team are geniuses? Before that, we also review the new 2016 version of "Blair Witch" (which Brandon watched so you didn't have to), the films gaining Oscar buzz out of the Toronto International Film Festival, in particular "Moonlight" and "La La Land", the 20th anniversary and season premiere of "South Park", Timbaland being replaced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins on "Empire", Nelly being broke, Kate Upton and Michael Rappaport - entertainers who owe their fame to Black people - trying to tell Colin Kaepernick and other NFL players when and how to protest, and more! #105 | Damp Lukewarm American Summer Movies b/w Dragon*Con Recap (feat. @akaAlibabwa)
Brandon and Ali speak with John about Brandon's first time going to Dragon*Con (not to _any_ comic con, just this one!) - which Dragon*Con vet Ali found nothing short of shocking. They recap the cosplay, the merch area, and the panels, in particular the "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" panel - and Brandon's subsequent photo-op with Vandal Savage himself, Casper Crump. Later, with Labor Day having passed, Brandon, John & Ali recap & review the 2016 summer movie season, which they - and most people - found underwhelming. Each major release of 2016 gets touched upon, including who saw - or didn't see - what, why, and what missteps the studios took this year - including John & Ali's extended rant on "Star Trek Beyond". Also, your feedback! #104 | Gabrielle Union’s Takin’ Us to Church (feat. @akaAlibabwa)
Brandon, John & Ali are back from vacation with a show that's absolutely yu--nope, won't do it. Big. The show's really big. In addition to reviewing the new films "Sully" (aka white "Flight") and "When the Bough Breaks" (aka the 2016 Sony Negro Horror Picture, in the "Perfect Guy"/"No Good Deed" tradition), we also review the new TV series "Atlanta" (from Donald Glover) and "Queen Sugar" (from Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey) and also discuss the Roger Ailes/Fox News sexual assault and harassment scandal, Geoff Johns and John Berg promising to retool the DC Comics Extended Universe films, CBS's ho-hum 50th anniversary celebration of "Star Trek", Monica smiling through shade from Brandy, and Apple's Sept. 7 iPhone 7 & Apple Watch event - and the resultant fallout. No headphone jack, no problem? We also discuss the debut of "The Birth of a Nation" at the Toronto International Film Festival to good reviews and little controversy...until Sunday, which found Gabrielle Union being put in the odd position of having to defend the film against Nate Parker's rape controversy as a rape survivor herself. SHOW NOTES: • 00:00:00: Intro/Film Reviews ??? "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006) ??? "The Martian" (2015) ??? "Sully" (2016) ??? #103.5 | Kings of New York: The Fleischer Studios Story (Best Of)
Brandon, John & Kareem revisit a discussion from last year on the history of the Fleischer cartoon studio in New York City (and briefly in Miami). Max Fleischer and his brother Dave not only gave the world cartoon characters like Koko the Clown, Betty Boop, and the animated versions of Popeye and Superman, but inventions such as the rotoscope that are essential to animation production to this day. In addition to the history of the studio and its best works, we also explore the influence of Black jazz culture on the Fleischer style (and the many jazz musicians who appeared in the cartoons, such as #CabCalloway and #LouieArmstrong), the truth behind the "Betty Boop is Black" meme, and how union busting and backroom conspiring eventually brought the studio down. During the show, Brandon showed the other guys several Fleischer productions, clips of which are in the show and a link to a YouTube playlist to which is included below. A lot (a _lot_) of Fleischer material is now in the public domain, and to that end we've cleaned up a few of them for you and provided a few full cartoons as well: YouTube Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrTQGIWVb9hh-14QEMoT4d8pNIZk9Poby Out of the Inkwell: "The Tantalizing Fly" (1919) Song Car-Tunes: "My Ole Kentucky Home" (1926) Inkwell Imps: "Koko's Earth Control" (1927) Talkartoons: "Dizzy Dishes" (1930) - first appearance of Betty Boop Talkartoons: "Boop-Oop-a-Doop" (1932): with Betty Boop Talkartoons: "Minnie the Moocher" (1932): with Betty Boop and Cab Calloway Screen Songs: "Dinah" (1932): With the Mills Brothers Betty Boop: "Betty Boop's Rise to Fame" (1934, used for the segment intro): Color Classics: "Poor Cinderella" (1934): with Betty Boop Color Classics: "The Kids in the Shoe" (1935) - public domain Color Classics: "Small Fry" (1939) - public domain Popeye Color Specials: "Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor" (1936) - public domain Popeye Color Specials: "Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves" (1937) - public domain "Gulliver's Travels" (1939) - public domain "Superman" (1941) - public domain "Mr. Bug Goes to Town" (AKA "Hoppity Goes to Town") (1941)

Joanne herself couldn't've done it better. After keeping the nation in suspense for nearly a year, Frank Ocean drops not one, but two - two wonderful albums! © The Count. One catch tho - the second of those two is Frank's first release on his own label, and the first is only available at the moment as a visual album. Scam or smarts? In addition, we review the new films "Southside with You", "Hands of Stone", "Morris from America", and "Floyd Norman: An Animated Life". We also discuss continuing developments in the Nate Parker case, the slew of other Oscar-bait films made by and/or starring Black talent, Donald Glover's quest to make his FX show "Atlanta" as authentic as possible, Tyler Perry bringing a show about rural white people to TLC, the showrunner of "Gotham" claiming superheroes don't work well on TV, the 20th anniversaries of OutKast's "ATLiens" and Aaliyah's "One in a Million", the 2016 MTV VMAs (which we started watching during recording), and more! #102 | The Legends Brawl: Michael Jackson vs. Prince (feat. @EgyptoKnuckles & @akaAlibabwa)
It's a debate that's raged on for decades now - who was truly the greatest of all time (or at least of the 1980s): Michael Jackson or Prince? Taking a civil debate format (take notes, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump) moderated by Ken with questions from Ali aka KingOfThieves, Brandon argues in favor of Motown graduate Michael Jackson while Ali aka EgyptoKnuckles argues in favor of his hometown hero Prince, covering each artist's artistic achievements, proteges, influence, and more. #101 | Nate Parker: Life vs. Art (feat. Michelle & @akaAlibabwa)
Continuing a story from last week's news show, the Nate Parker/Jean Celestin sexual assault controversy continues to spiral following the resurfacing of details from Parker's and Celestin's early-2000s criminal trial as the film they co-wrote, the Nat Turner biopic "The Birth of a Nation", prepares for theatrical release from Fox Searchlight. Brandon, Kareem, Ken, John, Jamison and his wife Michelle, and Ali have an in-depth discussion of the details of the case, the prevalence of rape culture on American college campuses - especially Penn State, where this incident occurred, Parker's responses to the scandal, the impact the scandal will have on the film's release, the possibly poor advice Hollywood PR agents want to give Nate Parker in this case, and more. (Trigger warning for this episode, as we discuss the rape/sexual assault case and incident in some detail) SHOW NOTES: • 0:00:00 Intro/Film Reviews: “Lilo & Stitch”, “Dark Places”, “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm”, “Batman” (1989), “Batman Returns”, “Terminator: Genesys” • 0:13:35 Film News: The Nate Parker/Jean Celestin/"The Birth of a Nation" Scandal WHERE TO FIND OUR GUEST: Ali: https://twitter.com/akaAlibabwa WHERE TO FIND US: You can subscribe to our show at the following services. #?iTunes: http://ow.ly/VUC1l #GooglePlay: http://ow.ly/4ndrBz #?Stitcher: http://ow.ly/Xfxlt #?SoundCloud: http://ow.ly/VUC1m #aCast: http://acast.com/ssnpodcast You can also find our show at http://ssnpodcast.com. #99.5 | Hot Buttered Shade, Pt. 2: Too Many Hands in Warner Bros’ Pot? (feat. @EgyptoKnuckles & @akaAlibabwa)
We continue our discussion with Brandon, John, Ken, and the double-dose of Alis - @EgyptoKnuckles and @akaAlibabwa - as we move into a discussion about an open letter an alleged former employee of Warner Bros. Pictures wrote to their former employer. Said letter was quite spirited in its critique of the company's recent box-office disappointments - not just the DC Comics films like "Suicide Squad" and "Batman v Superman", but films like "Pan" as well, and (possibly/allegedly) the upcoming "Wonder Woman" - and we discuss what Warner Bros. could/should do to turn its fortunes around. We also discuss comments from the producer of WB's "Shazam!" movie about how it's going to save their comics universe, a claim all of us - even Brandon - find skeptical, and Ken's Say Something Nice Challenge feature 50 Cent being petty about his full exposure on "Power" and Snoop Dogg starting a cooking show with a likely/unlikely partner. Memphis, Tennessee is the home of a large chunk of soul music history, and in this episode, Brandon, John, Ken, and a double-dose of Alis - @EgyptoKnuckles and @akaAlibabwa - discuss Brandon's recent trip to Memphis and his tours of the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum, Elvis' Graceland, and - as far as he's concerned - the main attraction, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Also in this episode, we discuss the current scandal surrounding Nate Parker, of "The Birth of a Nation", after his homophobic comments and college sexual assault trial resurfaced on social media, as well as a "Steven Universe" storyboard artist dealing with attacks on social media, reviews of the R-rated animated comedy "Sausage Party" and the Netflix series "The Get Down", and much more...including why John hates "Coming to America". #98 | 50 Cent is the New Shonda Rhimes (feat. @akaAlibabwa)
Sean "Puffy" Combs may have told us - frequently - that he thought he told us that he couldn't stop, but 50 Cent actually can't. A super-hero show? A Black Mafia Family show? And "Power" is already there? How many shows can 50 Cent get on the Starz network? Brandon, Ken, John, and special guest Ali try to find out. In addition, we also discuss Warner Bros' abandoned Tim Burton/Nicholas Cage "Superman Lives" film, the gender-gap in Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, another Nat Turner film that was almost produced 50 years before Nate Parker made his, Ava DuVernay being the first Black woman to direct a $100 million+ film, and ask our selves - where the heck is that new Frank Ocean album? SHOW NOTES: • 00:00:00 Intro/Film Reviews: "Tallulah", "The Little Prince" (2016), "The Warriors", "The Little Rascals Save the Day", "The Death of 'Superman Lives': What Happened" • 00:27:06 Film News • 00:44:24 TV Reviews: 2016 Election News Coverage, "The Night Of", "The Tunnel" • 00:52:37 TV News • 01:07:36 Music News & Reviews • 01:18:49 Ken's Say Something Nice Challenge • 01:34:28 In Memoriam/Outro WHERE TO FIND OUR GUEST: Ali's Twitter: @AKAAlibabwa WHERE TO FIND US: You can subscribe to our show at the following services. #?iTunes: http://ow.ly/VUC1l #GooglePlay: http://ow.ly/4ndrBz #?Stitcher: http://ow.ly/Xfxlt #?SoundCloud: http://ow.ly/VUC1m #aCast: http://acast.com/ssnpodcast You can also find our show at http://ssnpodcast.com. #97 | The “Suicide Squad” Spoilerific Review Show (feat. @akaAlibabwa)
Brandon, Ken, John and our friend & special guest Ali saw "Suicide Squad" over the weekend. How was it to finally see Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) and Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie) on the big screen? What was Jared Leto's Joker like? Where was the Will Smith pop-rap song? Was the film as bad as the Rotten Tomatoes reviews say? We each give our thoughts and ratings on the film, in both spoiler-free and spoiler-filled segments in this episode. In addition, we also discuss "Suicide Squad's" box-office performance, the drubbing the film got on Rotten Tomatoes, where Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are going - and where they should go - with the upcoming "Wonder Woman" and "Justice League" films, as well as side-trips into discussions of belly-dancing, fine drinks, and Killer Croc's favorite cable channel. #95 | Mom, Marques Houston is at the Door
Constance Wu is fed up with the whitewashing of Asian history in Hollywood, and Brandon, Ken & John discuss the ABC sitcom star's strong rebuking of Legendary Pictures' upcoming Chinese-produced and set film "The Great Wall", starring...Matt Damon? Really? Matt Damon? Also, on the 48th anniversary of the first appearance of Franklin in Charles Schultz's "Peanuts" comic strip, Brandon, Ken & John discuss the character's place in the series in conjunction with reviews of both the first "Peanuts" animated feature film, 1969's "A Boy Named Charlie Brown", and the most recent feature, 2015's "The Peanuts Movie". In addition, they discuss "The Rocketeer" getting a reboot/sequel with a Black female lead, the dying art of hand-painted movie posters, Stephen Colbert getting in trouble for being Stephen Colbert on his CBS late night show (as in, his old character from Comedy Central), Fox News CEO Roger Ailes being forced out of he company following multiple sexual harassment claims, a first look at Tyler Hoechlin as Superman on The CW's "Supergirl", The CW's upcoming "Riverdale", a Motown animated series, a ton of Netflix news about "Luke Cage", "Stranger Things", and "The Get Down", and reviews of Anderson .Paak's "Malibu", "Fantasia's "The Definition Of...", the (unfortunate in this case) return of late-90s rapper Drama to news headlines, and...Marques Houston becoming a Jehovah's Witness? Brandon & Ken are back to continue discussion of the new remake/reboot of "Ghostbusters" and the negative reactions to the film by both professional reviewers (really, Mr. Roeper?) and the denizens of Twitter and IMDb who've seen nary a frame of it, but apparently hate women. They also explore the good, bad, and ugly of the 2016 VH1 Hip-Hop Honors Show, Kid Flash being added to The CW's "The Flash", who the baby was on Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody", and more - including why far too many celebrities supporting "All Lives Matter" without actually understanding what they're doing. Rod & Karen of The Black Guy Who Tips Podcast joins Brandon & Ken to discuss some of their favorite bad movies - both the one's you'll admit are bad (but you love anyway) and the ones people may tell you are bad...but you just might fight them over it. From "Superman Returns" and "Man of Steel" to "Breakin'" & "Breakin' 2" to the "Sharknado" films, the "Transformers" films, the "X-Men" films, and a _lot_ of blaxploitation movies, everyone gets a chance to give tribute to - and maybe defend - the movies they love. #89 | A Pox on All Your Productions
Despite an awful week in American news and society, Brandon and Ken are here to discuss the latest in film, TV, and music to try and lift some spirits. We review "The Secret Life of Pets" and AMC's "Preacher", and also discuss Ken seeing "The Shining" at Atlanta's Fox Theater, Brandon's continual catching up with "The Flash" Season 2, who might play Joe West (if there IS a Joe West, *grumble grumble*) in Warner Bros. big-screen version of "The Flash", "Marvel introducing a new Iron Man who is a Black teenage girl named Riri Williams ("Riri?"), MTV & BET's "What Now" live special on police brutality, Wendy Williams putting her foot in her mouth on her talk show while discussing BET & HBCUs, and more - including a revisit to Eddie Murphy's "Vampire in Brooklyn", "Pokémon Go", and Brandon doing multiple Keith David impersonations. #88 | Selena is Not the Khia of Tejano Music (feat. @EgyptoKnuckles)
Special guest Ali aka Egypto Knuckles joins Brandon and Ken to discuss some of the latest stories in entertainment, including the long list of new inductees to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (and how these people having been previously omitted is a shame), backlash from Jesse Williams' speech at the BET Awards, and the new inductees to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which leads to discussion of the ubiquity of the film "Selena" in 1990s high school Spanish class curriculums. In addition, we also review Disney and Steven Spielberg's "The BFG", Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "The Shining" (which Brandon has _finally_ seen), and "Orange is the New Black" Season 4, for which Ken provides a great extended review at the end of the show (SPOILERS abound). #87 | Betamax to Blu-ray and Beyond (feat. @Rjcc)
Engadget HD Senior Editor Richard Lawler joins the whole crew - Brandon, Kareem, John, Ken & Jamison - to discuss one of the key things that makes this show possible - home video. We go over the past, present and future of home media and the various methods - Betamax, VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, streaming, and more (yes, more!) - we've used over the years to watch our favorite movies and TV shows at home. Stories of elementary school media carts, families' first encounters with DVD technology, and adventures at the video stores of old abound. Later in the show, we talk with Richard about the current state of home media with its increased emphasis on streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and VUDU, the rise of Ultra HD Blu-ray, and the fairly swift rise and fall of 3D Blu-rays. We also discuss where we see home media going in the future, and whether or not the tech fro mthe latest E3 and WWDC shows will take us there. Brandon & Ken are joined by special guest Bunny to review the 2016 BET Awards, which were simulcast across pretty much every network Viacom operates - Nick-at-Nite, MTV, VH1, etc. To that end, we discuss the wide variety of Black (mostly) Excellence this very large audience was exposed to, including Beyoncé & Kendrick Lamar's performance of "Freedom"; the performances of Chloe x Halle and Anderson Paak; Samuel L. Jackson being given the Lifetime Achievement Award; absolutely the many great Prince tributes by Bilal, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Stevie Wonder, Tori Kelly, Jennifer Hudson, Maxwell and Janelle Monáe; the amazing finale by Sheila E. and many of Prince's collaborators and protégés; and - of course - Jessie Williams' impassioned acceptance speech for the Humanitarian Award - and how Justin Timberlake's reaction to such got him in a lot of trouble with Black Twitter. In honor of and recorded on Father's Day, Brandon and Kareem sit with special guests Donte and Anthony to discuss their favorite TV dads. #81 | Apology Blouse (feat. @EssKayGA)
Brandon's sister @EssKayGA returns to join him, Ken, John, and Kareem as they run through a bevy of crazy topics and reviews. Among the films discuss are "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "A Madea Christmas" (all is explained within the show!), Passion of the Christ (as we discuss Mel Gibson writing Part II), and our TV discussion includes coverage of "Steven Universe", "The Flash", "The Carmichael Show", and (as we wait for Season 4) "Orange is the New Black". For the most part, we spend this episode having fun with the news stories (rails are optional this week), including an analysis that claims "Fuller House" may be the most popular show in all of filmed entertainment (!), Chadwick Boseman continuing his quest ot play every Black person in history with Reggie Hudlin's "Marshall" (as in Thurgood), Bobby Brown's new book, his "20/20" interview with ABC News' Robin Roberts and outing of Whitney Houston as bisexual; and - speaking of sexuality - Noah Galvin of "The Real O'Neals" reading Colton Haynes, Bryan Singer, and pretty much everyone and everything in sight over gay representation. We also pay respect to the victims of the shooting at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, and to Michu Meszaros, the actor who played "Alf" on TV in the 1980s (he was ill when we recorded and passed away the next day). #79 | “Roots” & “X-Men: Apocalypse”: Leaving Audiences Black and Blue
Two very different projects about discrimination and bigotry are our topics of discussion for this episode. First, Brandon, Kareem & Ken review "X-Men: Apocalypse". Is the movie as awful as you've heard? Has Bryan Singer finally gone and ruined the X-Men beyond repair? Has Jennifer Lawrence actually learned to act? You'll have to listen to find out, as well as to get our thoughts on what a Storm solo movie would be like, the controversy over one of the "X-Men" billboards being accused of promoting violence against women, and why Singer keeps trying to make Mystique a thing. Then, Brandon, Kareem, Ken & John review the History Channel's remake of Alex Haley's "Roots" miniseries and discuss the history and controversies behind "Roots", compare the old miniseries to the new, and discuss criticism from many in the Black community - including one Snoop Dogg - about whether or not there are too many slavery movies and TV shows being made. #78.75 | Best of: From Hanna to Barbera
In this Best Of episode, Brandon, Kareem, Rachel, and (briefly) John have a discussion on one of the key subjects Brandon’s forever talking about: an overview of the careers of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, from their days at MGM making "Tom & Jerry" shorts (and their tangle with the NAACP over Mammy Two-Shoes) through their career introducing the world to Fred Flintstone, George Jetson, Jonny Quest, Scooby-Doo, and the gang from "Clue Club" (hey, they can't all be winners) through Saturday morning's key supplier, Hanna-Barbera Productions. We also have a game, "Hanna-Barbera or Nah" to challenge everyone's Saturday morning knowledge, we answer your questions, and a special Motown Artist of the Week Who Didn't Make It that reveals a minor civil rights victory related to the production of HB's "Josie and the Pussycats". SHOW NOTES: • 00:00:18 Intro • 00:02:35 Disney's "John Henry" • 00:12:07 The History of Hanna-Barbera, 1939-1998 • 01:20:46 Game: Hanna-Barbera or Nah? • 01:25:38 Motown Artist of the Week: Patrice Holloway • 01:41:27 Questions/Outro WHERE TO FIND US: You can subscribe to our show at the following services. #?iTunes: http://ow.ly/VUC1l #GooglePlay: http://ow.ly/4ndrBz #?Stitcher: http://ow.ly/Xfxlt #?SoundCloud: http://ow.ly/VUC1m #aCast: http://acast.com/ssnpodcast You can also find our show at http://ssnpodcast.com. #78.5 | “DC Universe Rebirth” #1 & More Four-Color Fun
In this bonus episode, Ken and Brandon have an extended discussion about some of the prominent comics books launched and published during the month of May. The main focus of the discussion centers around "DC Universe Rebirth" #1, and the multiple changes, past, present, and future, DC's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and others have made to the DC comic book lines. We also talk about "Scooby Apocalypse" #1, which amazingly didn't suck, "Future Quest" #1, which was also awesome, and "Steve Rogers: Captain America" #1, which...well, which pissed everyone across the internet the entire hell off. Except possible Brandon. Listen as we discuss why & why-not. #78 | The “X-Men” Movies: The Good, The Bad and The Blasphemous
Kareem returns from (literally) traveling the earth, just in time to join Ken, Brandon and John to discuss the films that make up Fox's much-maligned "X-Men" movie franchise. In anticipation (and by "anticipation", we mean fear and consternation) of this week's release of "X-Men Apocalypse" (currently the worst-reviewed film of the franchise, but it's "X-Men"; you're still gonna see it and so will we), we discuss our thoughts and feelings on the seven films in the main "X-Men" film universe (everything except "Deadpool"), from the good ("Days of Future Past", "X2") to the oh-dear-God-why-are-they-doing-this-to-Stan-Lee's-babies ("The Last Stand", "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"), to the everything in-between. Included in our discussion are the squandering of the characters of Jean Grey, Rogue, and Storm, how Angela Basset and Janet Jackson were almost cast as Storm instead of Halle Berry, how Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner trading franchises at the time of "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "Superman Returns" was bad for everybody involved, why Jennifer Lawrence's overtures about leaving the "X-Men" franchise don't phase us one bit, and...wait, what else has James Marsden done exactly? Later, we set up a debate as to which of Motown's two premiere male vocal groups were better, The Temptations or the Four Tops, which ends up being a very one-sided and brief debate. #77 | White “Empire”
Have you ever heard of a hostile takeover? Allegedly, Shari Redstone has. In our Say Something Nice Challenge section, Brandon and John talk about how she might be trying to play the Andre Lyon to her father Sumner Redstone's Lucious Lyon, and trying ot take over Empi--uh, I mean the Viacom boardroom. She does what she wants and says what she wants with no apologies. Speaking of "Empire", Brandon reviews the season 2 finale and why he might be ready to tap out, John reviews the new film "The Nice Guys", and together they discuss Geoff Johns becoming co-head of DC Films, more Upfronts updates (including concise breakdowns of the DC Comics and Archie Comics universes for discussion of The CW's "Legends of Tomorrow and their new "Riverdale" show) for the fall 2016 broadcast schedules, the season finales for both "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" and "black-ish", the leaked-then-canceled Christina Aguilera/Hologram Whitney Houston duet, and more, including an discussion of why 1970 was a tense year for the then-newly-Diana-Rossless Supremes when their first release did better than Diana's first solo release. #76.5 | The Un-Blackening of Primetime, Part 2: 2016 TV Schedules & Trailer Reviews
In a follow-up to the previous episode, Brandon, John & Ken discuss the updates on the fall 2016-17 television season that have come out of the Upfront presentation for ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX (The CW Upfront had not occurred at the time of recording), including each network's new fall schedule (and FOX's midseason one as well), and discussions of what we thought of all of the trailers each network has released for its new programs. A lot of time-travel shows with modern token black folks having to deal with the past. Just sayin'. #76 | The Un-Blackening of Primetime, Part 1: 2016 TV Pilots Reviews
With the smoke having (mostly) cleared following Pilot Season 2016, Brandon, John & Ken the new, canceled & returning shows on ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and The CW for the upcoming 2016-17 television season. We also discuss whether or not any of these programs are gonna not suck, the differences between this and Pilot Season 2015 (a _lot_ less melanin), and why there's so many new shows about time-travel, imaginary friends, and rehabilitating rich white women. Additionally, we discuss some of the more interesting new shows and still-under consideration pilots coming to many of the cable networks this fall. #75 | #BlackPantherSoLIT
We're still super-hype over Black Panther's appearance in "Captain America: Civil War", and his impending entry into his own Ryan Coogler-directed solo film in 2018. And apparently, after Marvel's hiring of Michael B. Jordan to co-star with Chadwick Boseman and their courting of Lupita Nyong'o to do the same, so are many of y'all. We discuss the announcements, the #BlackPantherSoLIT hashtag (soul food at the concession stand!), why this film is going to be so important, and more. We also review "The Boss" and "The Big Short", discuss Marvel's success with their films in the light of Fox's continued screwing up with "X-Men: Apocalypse" and a nebulous "Fantastic Four" sequel, and give extensive reviews of the (absolutely groundbreaking) season 1 finale of "Underground", the penultimate episodes of the current seasons of "Empire" (and Jussie Smollett trolling the internet in the interests of the show), and Wentworth Miller's exit from "DC's Legends of Tomorrow". John also eulogizes "The Good Wife" following its series finale, and we ponder who in addition to (or besides) Madonna should be tapped to perform a Prince tribute, Sumner Redstone's, uh, extracurricular activities with the ladies in his life and Azalea Banks' figurative destruction at the hands of Disney child star Skai Jackson. SHOW NOTES: • 0:00:26 Intro • 0:04:09 Film Reviews: "The Boss", "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", "Dumbo" • 0:13:21 Film News • 0:54:54 TV Reviews: "The Flash", "Legends of Tomorrow", "Underground" S1 Finale, "Empire", "The Good Wife" Series Finale • 1:24:39 TV News • 1:45:24 Extra Film Review: "The Big Short" • 1:49:10 Music News • 2:09:17 Ken's Say Something Nice Challenge • 2:26:24 RIP to William Schallert & Darwyn Cooke/Outro WHERE TO FIND US: You can subscribe to our show at the following services. #?iTunes: http://ow.ly/VUC1l #GooglePlay: http://ow.ly/4ndrBz #?Stitcher: http://ow.ly/Xfxlt #?SoundCloud: http://ow.ly/VUC1m #aCast: http://acast.com/ssnpodcast You can also find our show at http://ssnpodcast.com. #74 | Jurnee is Winning (feat. Joshua Alston)
The AV Club's TV critic Joshua Alston joins Brandon and John to discuss being a professional critic and to discuss TV news and reviews with us, in particular "The Americans", "Power", "Supergirl", and, as they near their series finales, the #SmollettWednesday shows "Empire" & "Underground". And yes, the Smollett Cold War is still on, so we're still pitting Jurnee and Jussie against each other. Just for fun tho. We also discuss George Takei calling out Marvel Studios over its casting of Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One in "Doctor Strange", the fight over Prince's legacy and estate - including Sinead O'Connor & Arsenio Hall's legal battle, Lauryn Hill showing up late for an Atlanta concert, "Dear White People: The Series" on Netflix, and - heaven help us all - official announcements for the development of "Space Jam 2". ABOUT THIS SHOW
Join Brandon, John, Kareem, Ken, and Jamison as we discuss, dissect, and try to make sense of the past, present, and future in film, television, music, animation, race relations in media – and on occasion comics and tech – while trying to remain sane.
