    It's the learning that matters

This month we welcome the discussion with two midwifery academics, Associate Professor Kate Dawson and  Lynnelle Moran on the topic: It's the learning that matters - exploring student experiences of a formative- summative OSCE assessment. Their study focused on exploring feelings of anxiety and psychological safety as well as learning experience of students throughout the assessment period, including a summative OSCE assessment.

AI Chatbots in Sim: Improving the Student Experience

Nursing academic Dani Gardner from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Technology Sydney shares her project about using AI chatbots in simulation scenarios may provide the opportunity to examine the effectiveness of this approach for enhancing nursing students’ experience. Her study explored the use of AI chatbots as the ‘patient’ voice in simulation scenarios to enhance nursing students’ communication skills. An AI communication training platform was utilised in clinical lab classes, allowing students to practice communication and clinical reasoning, whilst performing practical skills. The focus was on gaining patient consent and providing reassurance before performing assessments and procedures.

Can you have too much Psychological Safety?

VIP Lounge session with our VIP's:Jenny Rudolph - Senior director of Innovation, Center for Medical SimulationMary Fey  - Associate Director, Applied Learning for Performance & Safety, Center for Medical Simulation Kate Morse - Assistant Dean for Experiential Learning and Innovation, Associate Clinical Professor at Drexel University, College of Nursing and Health Professions. In this session we discuss psychological safety, prebriefing and the differences in prebriefing between higher education and health-based sim centres and the possibility that were are focusing so much on 'psychological safety' that potentially we are doing our learners a disservice and not preparing them for the realities of clinical practice.

    Mask-Ed™ - Enhancing learner engagement

Mask-Ed: The educator transforms into a person with a history/story which is relevant to the learning experience and becomes a platform for teaching. The technique involves a three-way interplay involving the educator, the character and the learner. The educator tin character directs the learning process as they create a spontaneous and realistic simulation experience.Mask-Ed was created by Kerry Reid-Searl. Kerry is well known for her creative contribution in simulation as reflected in her creation of  Mask-Ed™ and Pup-Ed™. Kerry has been involved in undergraduate nursing education for more than 32 years. This has enabled her to design, implement and evaluate multiple simulations whilst also researching and publishing in the field. She has been the recipient of numerous national teaching awards and in 2020 was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for her contribution to nursing educationcheck out From one space to another: Kerry Reid Searl at TEDxNoosa 2014
