    232: New mall smell

Slutty teen elixirs, plastic clouds, milky vanillas, musty vanillas, and an impressive new collection from everyone's favorite cloven-footed fashion brand — these are some of the new smells we tackle today, choking through a cloud of blotters without proper ventilation. We do it all for you, the listener![What we smell like today: Mugler Angel Blush, Eleasium birth!]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

231: Smelling like a wolf in chypre's clothing

Seems like fragrance is revisiting a certain kind of scent profile combo dubbed by traditional perfumery as chypre (a scent profile we both keep forgetting about). We smell a few modern releases taking the idea and giving it a modern interpretation, as well as a few more new-ish scents in varying degrees of "sure, okay!" and "oh yes, that!"[What we smell like today: MEMO Paris Cap Camarat, D'orsay Tonka Hysteria]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

230: Is anyone having fun in fragrance?

Sort of, yes, kind of, more than before... It's just us this episode, chatting about some fun new fragrance releases (Vacation's new Orange Gelée collection, Born To Stand Out, etc), some BBB [beautiful but basic] fragrances (Guerlain's wedding collection, yet another Born in Roma, etc), and some ones we do not quite understand, but "sure, why the hell not?" (Notewrks's new "for men but also everyone" fragrances).[What we smell like today: Born to Stand Out Musc X, Ellis Brooklyn Isla Sirena]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

229: Snif passes the test [Feat. Bryan Edwards]

On this week's ep, we have Bryan Edwards, co-founder & CEO of Snif, one of the first brands to kick off the DTC fragrance-buying format. With clever and experimental scent releases that have always injected a bit of cheeky humor into fragrance, they're stretching in polar directions in a way that most brands would dare to endeavor — one way that engages with nostalgia-driven fun with pancake, milk and breakfast cereal, gasoline, and croissant scents; and another way that caters more plainly to fragrance's slightly more underserved audience (straight guys who wash their face with soap but are thinking of getting face soap... and now fragrance).[What we smell like today: Le Labo Violette 30, Snif 2%]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

228: BICHE mode [feat. Alexandra Pauly of Biche]

While perfume for dogs continues to miss, one pet grooming category — the shampoo and coat conditioner — remained woefully underconsidered. Enter Biche, a luxury pet grooming line launched by friend of the pod, Alexandra Pauly. The former High Snobiety beauty editor, fragrance enthusiast, and dog mom set out to create a line of pet shampoo and coat conditioning oil that would make bathtime a more sensorial ritual — and now it's here! We chat with Pauly on this episode about how to create a different kind of fragrance and personal care brand, how shampoo for dogs is different than shampoo for humans, and creating a signature scent with pod favorite Carlos Huber.[What we smell like today: Andrea Maack Muse, J Scent On A Cloud]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

227: Sniffing too close to the solar accord

An us chat about a week of new smells, featuring this modern, salty, solar fragrance accord that seems to be everywhere now, being humbled by luxury brands, new venture capital-backed fragrances, a listener voice message about the alleged almond-pocalypse, and, y'know, the general ranting we inevitably do.[What we smell like today: Discotheque Lola At Coatcheck, IRFĒ Marshmallow Musk]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

226: The most GLORIOUS purple scent we've smelled [feat. Susan Alexandra]

Two NYC icons, Susan Korn, aka Susan Alexandra, and perfumer Marissa Zappa teamed up to create Glorious, the first official scent of Susan Alexandra's jewelry and accessories brand. You know the colorful beaded bags and fun charm jewelry on site, and now you can experience the brand's signature playful delight with its first scent. We speak with Susan Korn on this episode about how she started her jewelry and bag boutique in NYC, creating the Glorious perfume and candle, and what it's like having our dream shop girl job.[What we smell like today: Glossier You Soie, Armani Power Of You]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

    225: A case against discovery sets 🧐

We're back after a wee break (vacation, life, etc) with a listener question about the pros/cons/whats with plunking down the dollars for a full-size scent vs. taking home a discovery set when in the market for niche fragrances abroad. We also discuss a handful of new scents from D.S. & Durga's Debaser In Bloom, Summer Fridays Sunlit Vanilla, Non-Fiction, Sidia, and more.[What we smell like today: Nonfiction The Beige, SIDIA Midas]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

224: How much can an algorithm 'do' perfumery?

When art & design turn their ambitions toward technology and olfaction, how much does a machine powered by algorithms, AI, or both, challenge an industry known for gatekeeping (and upcharging), and how much does it supplant the craftsmanship and skill of a perfumer? We discuss such iffiness after experiencing a custom scent-making installation that questions, "What if every human could create their own scent?"[What we smell like today: Prada Infusion de Santal Chai, "Forever Yong" made by Sable using Algorithmic Perfumery]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

223: The vineyard making perfume about wine [Feat. Dancing 🍷🍇🕺]

Dancing is a Sonoma vineyard (est. 2022) founded by mother and daughter, Cynthia and Lauren Russell. It's also a perfume brand that makes vineyard-themed scents: smoked wood and forest floor, the grapes, and, of course, the vines. We chat with Cynthia and Lauren about how it all came together and how they created their three scents with Frederick Bouchardy of Joya Studios.[What we smell like today: Louis Vuitton Fantasmagory, Zoologist Harvest Mouse]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

222: A rose by any other name would still smell like a perfume counter probably

Famously, we're not "florals" people, and especially not rose, but... a listener question prompts us to choose the rose. If we had to, these are the ones we'd pick. And for the rest of the hour, we talk about a lot of new scents we've been smelling lately.[What we smell like today: YSL Babycat, Documents Feather] 🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater, and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

221: The one job in fragrance that would make us TOO powerful

There's a certain position in the fragrance industry that gets to call the shots, finesse the juice, and influence how fragrances go from brief to shelves — a position that your hosts wished they knew existed during the "figuring out what we wanna be" phase of our academic careers. We can't turn back time, but we can grill said figure: Kyle Ferguson, fragrance evaluator at Givaudan. He's the go-between the client and perfumer, facilitating communication, translating scent directives, and helping to make a fragrance its best and most beloved. Kyle generously shares his insight and experiences, behind-the-scenes of the perfume biz.[What we smell like today: LBTY "Liberty Maze," Roan Sahara Song]Shop our 👚 NEW MERCH👕 now available on our website. We have Bryson Ammons and Eddie Hodges, founders of Alloy Studio, on this episode to talk about creating an independent fragrance brand in NYC, how creative rules everything they do, and celebrating queer and black identity via fragrance. We haven't done one of these in a while — it's a listener Q&A episode in which we address your queries about fragrance and non-fragrance related things like: how to blind buy "successfully," how to display your perfumes in a non-tacky way, how to tactfully tell someone they stink, where all this perfume hype culture is going, any former guests we'd love to have on again, the most repulsive scent, and more interpersonal anecdotes to further our parasocial relationship![What we smell like today: Hawthorne Phantom Melon, Coach Dreams Starlight] Shop our 👚 NEW MERCH👕 now available on our website. 217: Our Official Scent Predictions for 2026

Are we psychic? According to the history....... not no. Every year, we have a stab at what we can expect to smell in the coming year's forecast, based on current trends, emerging trends, the thousands of PR emails we receive trying to make [redacted] happen, and what we've been seeing and smelling on the streets. 215: TASTE!!! [feat. Serviette]

We speak of brands often, sometimes (often) critically, other times admiringly. One such brand in the latter is Serviette, helmed by Trey Taylor. A creative culmination of his own tastes, education in fashion, and upbringing in the Great North, Serviette explores the tension between class with modern olfactory concepts, and a whole moodboard's worth of far-reaching cultural references.[What we smell like today: Necessaire Olibanum, Maison Crivelli Tubereuse Astrale]This episode is sponsored by Cécred (hurray!) We have the pleasure of chatting with perfumer Isaac Sinclair on this episode — the only kiwi perfumer (we've heard of) and the olfactive partner for Abel. He tells us about Symrise's upcycling tech that's kind of like the agua fresca of fruit notes, how the "oriental" olfactive family was originally "ambery," and how Abel's directive for creating "natural" fragrance is that none of the ingredients involve fossil fuel derivatives (kind of a first in luxury fine fragrance!). 201: Rare Beauty's first perfume looks like that for a reason

We're delighted to welcome Joyce Kim, chief product officer for Rare Beauty, on this episode to talk about how Rare's first eau de parfum was created: its unique bottle design created in collaboration with hand therapy specialists, the four scent layering balms that dramatically transform the scent, and how an early unintended packaging design feature informed what's possible for accessibility in beauty products.[What we smell like today: Harlem Perfume Co. 200: Mist-flation for the caramel-curious

We have MORE body mists in the world this week. We have perfumes for decades. We have opinions on cheeky scent-naming formats. Catch up with us as we (briefly) mention some summer cinematic blockbusters, smell the new Philosophy body mists, argue about how much body mists and 10ml travel EDP vials should cost, and we smell Selena's (Rare Beauty's) new perfume. 199: Making perfume with the ghost of Eartha Kitt [feat. Harlem Perfume Co]

We have Teri Johnson of Harlem Candle Co. and Harlem Perfume Co. talking about her historically reverent collection of perfumes inspired by the great artists of the Harlem Renaissance: Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker, Duke Ellington, and Eartha Kitt — who's perfume was made in collaboration with her daughter Kitt Shapiro (and whose grandaughter Nora Mae starred in the campaign!). Johnson chats with us about the significance of the Harlem Renaissance, how her candle brand took off during the pandemic, and how Eartha Kitt "oversaw" the formula of her namesake perfume. Also in this EP: We're still blush blind apparently The GAP scents are coming back (even though we already knew they never left) A lightning round sniff test of Harlem Perfume Co's new Sephora-launched fragrances [What we smell like today: Byredy Pulp, Prada Infusion De Rhubarbe]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

198: Perfumes that attract humans vs. perfumes that attract bugs

The Venn diagram of perfumes "for sex" (which let's be real, is all of them) and perfumes that attract bugs might be a near-circle. However, there are certain fragrances and fragranced products that could be handy on your next camping trip if you want to avoid attracting either. Also in this ep: A listener question about the smell of summer Sable is looking for a (non-Internet) creator or fabricator Tynan is looking for... a reason Phlur's M&A is making a great case for divorce Why the hell are Victoria's Secret Dream Angels perfumes so expensive on eBay? 197: AI can't replace us because we don't know what we're doing

Yes, we heard about the short-lived AI perfume influencer, and we're not worried. But everyone was for a minute there! We're chatting about "work" and "jobs," beauty awards being scams, new bananas, the most basic thing about Sable, a listener question about mummies (sort of), what AI is potentially useful for, D.S. & Durga's relaunched tennis scent, etc, etc, etc...[What we smell like today: Kayali Maui In A Bottle Sweet Banana, Victoria's Secret Bare Sueded Vanilla]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

196: Can you smell the difference between indie and big oil house-made perfumes?

Not to be contentious, but... what do people think "indie" even means? What does mass mean? And is who they're made by indicative of the quality of fragrance? It's a question making the rounds amongst the fraghead forums, and it's a question that calls for investigation of how our fragrances are being made, who influences their formulas, and what resources are available to whom? Also! How would we downsize our perfume collection (if we had to, which we don't — thank god), in response to a listener's question. Also, also! a few new things we've been smelling this past week :)[What we smell like today: D'orsay Sur Tes Levres, Sarah Baker Pastel Rumours]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

195: The Scent of Australia In 6 Stories [Feat. Raconteur] 🇦🇺

Years ago, Craig Andrade took a candle-making class that became the impetus for a life pivot from being a lawyer to becoming a perfumer. And in studying perfumery, he realized that so many of Australia's native raw materials had yet to be introduced to the world. We have Andrade on this episode to discuss how Raconteur embodies the stories of Australian life through some of Australia's unique idiosyncrasies, desserts, and best hours (3 am at a rave). We recently met Alex Brands, founder of the new fragrance... brand, Rite Of Way, at our scent swap last month. He gifted us his first scent Outer Realm, and we were intrigued by the packaging design, the cute little tote, and of course, the scent (which also happens to be created by Joey Rosin, former guest and perfumer for Sable's Die Hot With A Vengeance perfume). 190: Talking with your hands never smelled so good

Hand sanitizer has a rather unfair reputation — this sticky, medical-smelling goo serves to remind us of a worldwide pandemic, or else the inconvenience of not being able to find a wash sink with soap. Ugh. Touchland is a brand that elevates the hand sanitizer experience with complex, trend-driven scents that could double as perfume in a pinch (and often does). And sure, lots of hand sanitizers come scented, but Touchland's unique conversation-starting component has single-handedly changed the perspective on cool ways to casually de-germ. Andrea Lisbona, founder of Touchland, is our guest on this episode to talk about how she made hand sanitizer (and now body & hair mist) so aspirational that it scored a serious acquisition.

189: What went down at our first scent swap?

In case you hadn't heard from our last five eps or so, we hosted our first scent swap last week at Talea in Brooklyn. We had 180 RSVPs, 50 swag bags, and a whole lot of perfumes to swap. Here's a little catch-up about the event, and some smells we've been enjoying recently.

    188: When Rebrands Flop ☹️

The chat around the frag-o-sphere as of late has been steaming about Boy Smell's big rebrand. It's been called everything from Temu-ified to TikTok-bait. And aside from our thoughts about it (of which they exist in abundance), we wondered what rebrands are for, when are they successful, and what do brands owe their audience?[What we smell like today: Montale Arabians Musk, Fugazzi Vanilla Haze]We're hosting a Scent Swap at Talea in Williamsburg on May 7th from 6-9pm. 187: How to smell like a music festival 🏁 [feat. Romy Kowalewski of 27 87]

Burnt rubber, absinthe, red pepper, fennel — not the most typical notes you'd find in a perfume, but 27 87 has a clever way of incorporating unexpected things into their very sophisticated, very balanced, and very can't-stop-smelling-yourself fragrances.  Romy Kowalewski, the German-born and Barcelona-based founder of 27 87 makes such scents, based on the most striking elements of so many shared experiences and feelings.[What we smell like today: Byredo Mohave Ghost, Xerjoff Naxos]We're hosting a Scent Swap at Talea in Williamsburg on May 7th from 6-9pm. 186: How smart homes smell good

We're hosting a Scent Swap at Talea in Williamsburg on May 7th from 6-9 pm. It's free with RSVP. Bring at least one fragrance to swap and enjoy bevs & snacks from our host. If your idea of home fragrance involves sticky reed diffusers, sweeping up incense ash, or $80 candles, Pura offers something for the tech-savvy, with one of the first smart home app-controlled scent diffusion devices. More sophisticated than a flower-shaped plug-in and less treacherous than a forgotten candle left burning, Pura's device is a nifty hockey puck-sized disc that holds two different scent pods and can be controlled with an app to customize scent selection, timing, and intensity. We have VP of Fragrance Trevor Davis and Chief Fragrance Experience Officer Mara Dumski to explain the intricacies of how scents are deconstructed and rebuilt for different purposes like electronic diffusion.[What we smell like today: Vilhelm Parfumerie Chimilka, Bleu Nour Neon Violette]🌐 Find more info, episodes, and merch at Smellyalater.live☎️ Leave us a voice message on the SYL Hotline at Speakpipe.com/smellyalater and we may respond on a future episode.📱 Follow us on Instagram @smellyalater.mp3💌 Leave a comment in our Spotify episode prompts and/or a (nice) review wherever you stream (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ only)

The fragrance industry is trotting out AI more and more in new creations and creative development, but when it comes to digitizing smells, OSMO is a Google-born initiative that uses machine learning, sensory neuroscience, data science, engineering, fine fragrance, analytical chemistry, and product development to map smells, engineer new smell molecules, recreate living scents, and finagle how olfactory technology can aid other industries.
