036 - Developing Kids Into Emotionally Mature Adults
This episode is part of a series where we answer your questions.Today's question:"How do I help my kids develop into emotionally mature adults? How can I support them so they don't have to struggle through the process of self-healing like we did?"In this episode, we explore the deep desire many parents have to protect their children from pain and struggle. We talk about the reality that healing and self-discovery are part of the human experience—and why trying to eliminate struggle entirely may not actually serve our kids in the long run. Lora shares insights about modeling emotional maturity rather than trying to teach it through instruction, and why nervous system regulation, mindfulness, and self-awareness are best learned through what children observe in the adults around them. Jeff reflects on parenting adult children and the evolving relationship between parents and kids as they grow.We also dive into:Why therapy is becoming more normalized in newer generationsThe difference between supporting children and enabling themCultural expectations around independence and parentingThe role of community in raising emotionally healthy adultsWhy modeling mature behavior matters more than perfect parentingThe power of apology in parent-child relationshipsUltimately, we come back to a simple but challenging idea:If you want to raise emotionally mature adults, become one.Is something in you waking up and you're ready for deeper work? You don’t need a Himalayan cushion, an incense cloud, or perfect posture to practice formal mindfulness—and you definitely don’t need to suffer through it.In this episode, Lora and Jeff explore what it really means to have a formal mindfulness practice. We share personal stories, discuss the sneaky trap of spiritual ego, and break down the difference between simply sitting and truly observing with compassion.Lora offers a trauma-inclusive lens for developing a formal meditation practice that actually meets you where you are—bed, chair, or wobbly stool included. 016 - Pause: The Power of Informal Mindfulness
What if your most powerful mindfulness tools are taking a pause and wiggling your toes? In this episode of So What Who Cares?, Lora and Jeff dive into one of the most practical, transformative topics they've explored yet: informal mindfulness. It just has to be real. We discuss the acronym B.O.L.D. - Breathe, Observe, Listen, Decide - and why it can be a game changer when you're trying to stay aligned with your values in everyday moments. In this episode we explore:- What informal mindfulness really means and why it's more approachable than you might think- The role of the subconscious in everyday reactions- How values guide mindful decision-making- The power of the pause: learning to respond, not react- Community, connection, and why we can't do this work aloneSo what? What if every breath you take in this moment is more than air - it's a sacred thread that connects you to everything? In this episode, Lora and Jeff explore what emotions really are, how they differ from feelings and states, and why some emotions stay with us long after the moment has passed. Sometimes, the hardest battles aren't the ones we fight - they're the ones that leave us frozen. Stillness isn’t always peace. Sometimes, it’s being stuck. 002 - The Bucket: Understanding Your Window of Capacity
Some storms are bigger than others. But with the right tools, we can keep ourselves afloat - one scoop at a time. For today's episode, Jeff and Lora are joined by Niki (aka Bird), Jeff's wife and Lora's long-time friend! They take some time to discuss the window of capacity - or the amount of space each individual has to handle the things life throws their way. Our ability to handle life's challenges. We explore the following topics:- What the window of capacity is and why it's essential for navigating life- How emotions, stress, and trauma impact our capacity and what happens when we go beyond it- The myth that being "calm" all the time equals regulation- Why comfort doesn't always mean safety - and why we need discomfort to grow- How to recognize when you're outside your window and practical ways to get back inside- The role of movement, mindfulness, and connection in expanding our capacityOur adventurer finds himself caught in a storm, his boat slowly sinking. As he begins to panic, he discovers an old bucket - a tool he hadn't realized he had all along. With it, he bails out the water, keeping himself afloat long enough for the storm to pass. We all have limits, but we also have tools to keep going - one scoop at a time.
