On this week's episode of The Kat In The Trap, I decided to go with some R&B flavor. We always focus on high energy from Hip Hop and trap music, but I wanted some tracks that focus more on a loving vibe for the series. As we continue revamping the look and sound of the #new52mixshow, The 765 Podcast was created as a spin-off of The 317 Mixshow, a weekly radio show by my longtime mentor, Mixmaster88. It was part of the core three of the #new52mixshow, reflecting my schedule at my residency at Dancers Showclub: Sat, Sun, and Mon. Joined with Sunday Vibes and Mixtape Monday, these shows were the norm from 2018–2020. Then we added Manila Underground and The Kat In The Trap in 2020, and this spring The 503 Mixshow and 206 Sessions round out the whole week, showing love to Seattle and Portland. Super excited to return to this series. Solly's Proper House is inspired by visits to Chicago from 2018–2020, which is the birthplace of house music. During my sabbatical in 2019 from the club, I wanted an electronic series that focuses on four on the floor house music. I'd also like to give a shoutout to Shay Baca from PDX, who runs House Wednesdays, and Nick Samaro from my hometown of Indianapolis, who runs Proper at The Patron Saint. If I had to tell you who one of my biggest musical influences was from my hometown, I would have to say it's Cheyenne. Over the years we've often shared Spotify playlists, and it gave me ideas of things to play at a club level. By the time I put together Summer Sampler ten years ago, a few of her songs made it to the Final Cut. I would even go as far as to say Sunday Vibes from the #new52mixshow is very much music I think she would like. Feeling extra groovy tonight after Bad Bunny’s halftime performance and watching the Seahawks bring home another Lombardi trophy to the PNW. Zelda is truly a beautiful soul and an incredible supporter. I met her when I returned to my hometown over the holidays for a few shows, and this mix is my way of giving that energy back.  I wanted to create something reminiscent of my club days — that Kat in the Trap space where EDM and trap collide. There are a few moments to listen for in this one, including two edits I put together myself (producer Solly loading 👀): a Megan Thee Stallion flip blended with Space 92’s Phobos, and a ‘Strut the Ground’ remix we’ve dubbed ‘Tate House.’ The real standout for me is Seb C and Jaemo’s remix of ‘Night Show’ by Travis Scott. Both Seb C (West Coast) and Jaemo are DJs out of Vancouver and residents at Celebrities Nightclub — if you’re ever there on a Tuesday night, trust me, the place is alive.  At the heart of all of this is support. I want to begin by paying my respects to DJ legend Michael ‘5000’ Watts. I grew up on Swishahouse, and it felt only right to honor that legacy by featuring a few tracks from Mike Jones and Paul Wall in this week’s mix.  While my catalog for this episode isn’t as deep as I would’ve liked, I also included records from other artists across the Dirty South — songs that are over 20 years old and shaped my ears long before I ever stepped behind the decks.  This era of hip-hop had a major influence on how I approach DJing, so I let these tracks breathe instead of rushing through them in the usual quick-mix, mixtape style. Tonight’s episode of Sunday Vibes revisits a few tracks from my Sunday Funday days of 2016 and 2017. As a DJ, mixing records with live drums is always a fun challenge — especially when some download pools offer DJ-friendly intros. But for certain tracks, I lean into authenticity out of respect for the artist and the original feel.
