    15: What's the 'End Game'?

Understanding your goal in making music greatly impacts what you do with what you create and the time you have. From the hobbyist to award winning star, each person is making music, but in different ways. Certain tasks will have more time dedicated to them than others for one type of artist compared to the next. Understanding your goals will better equip you to move forward as you plan what you do.Links:UP - Forrest Frank & Connor Pricehttps://open.spotify.com/track/50utqknCBo0N3QAQbXIPKV?si=4205d45c679649c3Brand New - Bay Turnerhttps://open.spotify.com/track/2CvY01baIhm7a5sdrRjbjf?si=ced5ff2a5593418bInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/bayturnermusic/Boss Level - Matthew Parker & Sam Bowmanhttps://open.spotify.com/track/35jNOWc0XXlzppn1xFfsqW?si=6fc5e5480a3d4c50Dream Label Group:https://www.dreamlabelgroup.com/Wings Access:https://www.wingsaccess.com/Luke 12:48https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%2012%3A48&version=NIVLet's get connected! If you have things you want me to cover, or just want to say hi, we can get connected:Follow on Instagram: @SongsmithshowSubmit a question: https://linktr.ee/Song_SmithEmail:[email protected] episodes every other week

What makes the music you like 'good'? In this episode, as well as the following, we will go through those main things songwriters should think about while creating their music to better create not only a 'good' song, but a great song.Songs Referenced:Breathe - Jonny Diazhttps://open.spotify.com/track/3hN8RetXNOyDVhxGdkFlqA?si=504c2212285e4d12Great are You Lord - David Leonard (While David did write the song, I could not find a recording of it by him, so I included the version by One Common)https://open.spotify.com/track/2BSHQRfyk7flniKvyhDdJ6?si=6cc67998489642f0Garden King - Sam Bowmanhttps://open.spotify.com/track/07agjqIrIT2SQRTy9sdoqf?si=94b821a8d24b4e21God's Not Dead - Newsboyshttps://open.spotify.com/track/0eI19vR5WZ12fuYcEFUVkw?si=284c7151f6734d7fLet's get connected! If you have things you want me to cover, or just want to say hi, we can get connected:Follow on Instagram: @SongsmithshowSubmit a question: https://linktr.ee/Song_SmithEmail:[email protected] episodes every other week

    12: What’s it all For?

This episode, we’re going to church…I got a bit preachy, but it was for a good reason. Often times, we can get so caught up in creating and the rush of showing off our work, we can forget what this is ALL about, and what the stakes of the Gospel message truly are. While this isn't innately a 'songwriting' episode, it is a message that we all, including me, need to be reminded of. I hope you walk away from this one encouraged and on even more on fire for Christ!Let's get connected! If you have things you want me to cover, or just want to say hi, we can get connected:Follow on Instagram: @SongsmithshowSubmit a question: https://linktr.ee/Song_SmithEmail:[email protected] episodes every other week

    11: Scripture in Songwriting

The Bible is the foundation of our faith, so it only seems right to create songs from it.Scripture is full of very important messages and principles outside of just the gospel message of Jesus saving humanity. Both in the Old and New Testament deal with things like handling emotions (fear, impatience, joy, etc.) as well as much deeper topics. All of these things can and should be expressed through song, and there are many unique ways you can do it. 9: CCM Radio Needs Help

There are many different styles on Radio, but when you hit CCM, things tend to feel a bit dull....There is no denying that the majority of Christian songs on radio are starting to morph into one another and sound the same. They all seem to follow a similar thread in messaging and sound, turning more and more away. In episode 9, I talk about my thoughts on the situation, why I believe it is the way it is, and how we can hopefully learn from it.Referenced:The Lost Demos - Toby Mac:YouTube: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaKtKNnAvb5wvn_vbmOT7MEelwDkxingg&si=aux-f6qofPKicfi2Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/0zLUHkCZ0FWl4y1EN6YB1t?si=u2aTUArlQ72jg3Mh9-YFrASo Yesterday - Mercyme: https://open.spotify.com/track/1FdFqbwHsGQvN2RisWjfYb?si=f59a7abcd088426dSubmit a question for Ep. 10's Q&A!https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/song-smithOr you can send them to me using any of the contact methods below!Let's get connected! If you have things you want me to cover, or just want to say hi, we can get connected:Follow on Instagram @Songsmithshowhttps://www.instagram.com/songsmithshow/Email:[email protected] episodes 1st/3rd week of the month

SS Ep. 8: Skill VS Gear

It is so easy to fall into the trap of 'I need this'. We believe we will only be good at music once we have this one thing. However, that is a lie.... As consumers and fans, we see all of these musicians with their fancy equipment, and want to be just like them by buying the same things. The problem with that is 1.) that we could be spending way more money then we really have to, and more importantly, 2.) if you want to get better at music, expensive gear won't help. Wouldn't it be nice to have a late night fireside chat with another songwriter, talking about how amazing songs are? We talked about the beginning of his music journey, where he is at now, and what the future holds. On top of that, we discussed what it takes to really stick with the craft. SS Ep. 7: The Best Team to Be On

You want to play music with others, but either no one was time, or you can't find people dedicated to meeting consistently. However, the answer may just be under your nose. It can be a huge struggle to find a place plug in and play music consistently with others. Between conflicting schedules and not knowing tons of musicians, finding a group that you can get together with is often a loft challenge. This is where the worship team comes in. Basically every church has one, and they can be a great resource to you for so many reasons. Join me in episode 7 as we talk about all the ways being on the worship team can help YOU!! Note: Last episode I said that this episode would be a much bigger video episode. However, due to problems with the editing program and time constraints, that didn't fully come to light. I do have plans for better videos in the future, but I found I don't have the capacity to produce those right now. SS Ep. 6: Getting Past the Wall

Even with our greatest efforts, we're bound to get writers block eventually, when we just feel sapped creatively. If we all get it, though, how do we get OUT of it?Inevitably, we are going to get stuck when trying to write songs from time to time. It is kind of a curse of being a creative. There will be lows and highs, times when our thoughts flow freely, and others when it feels like a desert of dullness. In this episode, I give some practical ways to combat writers block and creative lulls. Even though this is a songwriting podcast, the things I discuss in this episode can be applied to many different things, like story writing and art. SS Ep. 5: Made to Worship (Interview with Edie Lauer - The Narrow)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel in a small band? Well, my guest Edie Lauer does! Apart of ONU's traveling band The Narrow, Edie is the standing vocalist of the band. The group travels between summer camps and youth retreats, playing worship sets for the events. Though not specifically songwriting oriented, her perspective of being in a band and who it's all for is really intriguing, and could be valuable to you if you start doing shows for your music. Songs can be a great way to process emotions. Writing your feelings and questions into lyrics can be therapeutic.Like journalling or talking with a friend, writing songs about how you feel can help you really get it out. You can also use it as a way to ask God questions, similar to a prayer. In this episode, I get into what that looks like for YOU and how we can start doing this for ourselves. Whether it's an explicitly Christian song or not, what we're writing should always be done through the lens of Christ, and what better way to align yourself then through prayer!Every song we write has some meaning or message behind it. It may be one of praise to God, or about how hard life is. Regardless of the topic, there is a message. It is important for us to 'let God in' on these, as they can impact people in various way, and that is exactly what I unpack in this episode.Referenced:'Firm Foundation' by Cody CarnesSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/2PX1folnkoS0aUO410bwxN?si=54e040c055c84c4cYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCi6V-SWFYEScriptures: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Matthew 7:24-17 Matthew 7:7-12 Matthew 21:18-22 1 John 5:14Explanation for Matt. 21: https://open.spotify.com/episode/39dDvEbglIF52J4ohrhjDl?si=909fd16424884c82Let's get connected! If you have things you want me to cover, or just want to say hi, we can get connected:Follow on Instagram @Songsmithshowhttps://www.instagram.com/songsmithshow/Email:[email protected] episodes 1st/3rd week of the month
