L(AI)bor - Benjamin Leland Bacon - 2025.09 - 2025.10: https://vimeo.com/1173709731 “The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.” — Sol LeWitt L(AI)bor is a procedural and performative artwork that examines how authorship and labor within contemporary art practice, specifically conceptual art, are transformed when artificial systems assume perceptual, conceptual, and operational roles. This work originated through a month-long performative residency where the work unfolds within a hybrid workspace – a studio-laboratory and post-digital factory – where the boundaries between artistic creation, computational procedure, and operation collapse into one another. This space is not a neutral container for aesthetic experimentation, but an intentionally structured environment designed to test how artistic production is reorganized when conceptual and procedural authority is partially delegated to a machine-learning system. A customized GPT model produces a new set of textual painting instructions each workday, and the artist responds through embodied interpretation, material execution, and iterative documentation. Here, the AI functions not as a tool but as a nonhuman collaborator whose probabilistic propositions demand interpretive, tacit, and materially negotiated forms of human response. Through recursive cycles of instruction, enactment, and reflection, the studio becomes a field of operational co-production in which thought is made visible as a practice distributed across human and machine. In the computational present, artwork no longer resides in the stability of an idea nor in the mechanics of its execution, but in an operational ecology where concept, code, perception, and embodied action co-produce meaning. Instruction constitutes a relationality between human and machine where a co-modeling emerges from enacted studio practice that concretizes creative expression. It's almost one year ago that we launched the 3rd volume in the Side-Line powered charity compilation series "Face The Beat". During the past few months we have completed a brand new volume again focusing on getting as many unsigned bands as possible aboard. And what a ride it has been... as we have again been inundated with thousands of submissions. The quality was so high this time that we have increased the number of bands that could participate this time. "Face The Beat: Session 4" counts 92 tracks (!) from electro / industrial / experimental bands based allover the world. All the participating bands have one thing in common: they all are supporting our charity work, which this time will go to build a sanitary installation for a public hospital (based in the Mexican state of Veracruz). Why Mexico? Our chief editor Bernard Van Isacker explains: "When I was in Mexico to get wedded earlier this year, I was rushed to a public hospital (where usually the poor people go) with a serious back injury. I was so incredibly well-received and helped out even though it was very clear that the hospital was very much underfunded. The doctors, the nurses, they have done a splendid job in caring for me. But one thing struck me during this period and that was that the poor people waiting outside (sometimes for hours) had no toilet facilities or a place where they could take care of their babies. The hospital had no funds to build this, so I decided to help them out financially. But what I gave isn't sufficient to finish the construction and complete the sanitary facilities. That's when I realised that the charity project to be supported this time by Face The Beat should be this. You know, we are so damn lucky with our public health service here in Europe. So, if you want to help out, then please donate, you'll make the life of so many people a lot easier and comfortable." "Face The Beat: Session 4" was compiled by Bernard Van Isacker and features lots of new talents, and several familiar 'faces', from the electro, wave, industrial, dubstep, dark folk scene who wanted to put their shoulders under this release. You'll find well known acts such as The Psychic Force, Kant Kino, Antibody, and many more next to a huge lot of new talents which caught our attention in the past few months, many of these bands don't have a label contract or have just been signed recently. The material was carefully mastered by Erlend Eilertsen (Essence Of Mind) for your best audio pleasure. Reaching the end of this tumultuous year, and closing in on the Christmas and New Year's festivities we count on you to be generous with your donations - it's no obligation of course, but you'll make sure that thousands of people will be able to wait in human conditions during their hospital visit. Both of them have been actively playing in different bands for more than a decade in China.
