Split Your Head - Season 4 - Episode 55 - Discussion on Pink Films with Amber T & Naomi Monaghan

New episode is up and this time I've got Amber T and Naomi Monaghan on to talk about Pink Films! Amber T is a writer and news editor for Fangoria Magazine and Naomi has recently launched an exciting webzine called "Asian Cinema Shine", as well as the PinkCat Podcast (that covers Pink & CAT III films). They've both contributed essays to a number of recent and upcoming Japanese bluray releases, so naturally I had to have them on to discuss this ultra-provocative Asian subgenre. We specifically tackle Genji Nakamura's 1983 gay satire of Yukio Mishima's life called Beautiful Mystery, as well as Minoru Kunizawa's 2002 gay horror/romance, Two Lovers. Expect also a healthy dose of J-Horror history. Split Your Head - Season 4 - Episode 54 - Interview with New Wave Video

This episode features an interview with John Mathews & Maiko Takeda, the owners of New Wave Video, an Asian-focused boutique blu-ray label that's been releasing some of the wildest titles that the underground has long been rallying for. This Australian/Japanese couple gets into the nitty gritty of acquiring these titles, while dropping very subtle hints about what's to come and what it takes to charm the likes of Nikkatsu. It was a fun and revealing chat, one that got me salivating over what they've got in store for us fans of weird Asian cinema! Split Your Head - Season 4 - Episode 53 - Interview with SamHel (Disfigured Perception, Man-O-Wolf)

WARNING: CONTAINS DISCUSSIONS OF GRAPHIC CONTENT INVOLVING VIOLENCE, GORE, SEXUALITY THAT SOME MAY FIND OFFENSIVE/TRIGGERING This episode features a fascinating chat with extreme underground horror filmmaker, SamHel. Sam is one of the most prolific figures to rise up in this hyper-niche scene with many of his films pushing the envelope for hardcore sexuality and shocking gore. However, upon picking his brain, I found some of the most heartfelt and grounded answers to come from someone creating such disturbing content. His processes and methods showcase a high level of ethics and consideration, while he continuously challenges himself as an artist and a human being. Needless to say, this conversation was a banger and I have the highest respect for this guy. Split Your Head - Season 4 - Episode 52 - Interview with David M. Dawson (Zebra Hooves)

This episode features the return of David Dawson, an Illinois based mumble-gore filmmaker whose penchant for juvenile antics and nuanced storytelling has made his oeuvre uncomfortably relatable... Just Like This Chat! Dawson dives head-first into his neuroses, revealing the body horror of his waking life and his grievances with the US medical system. This sets up his latest offering Zebra Hooves perfectly as it is his most personal and revealing film all about paranoia, illness, nostalgia, etc, with thankfully a dollop of catharsis. He also teases his next more comedic project in the vein of Fam-ILLI: a satirical examination of straight-edge culture. Hell yeah. Dawson's also a pleasure to chat with and as we compare our most private ailments (like anal fissures), I'm sure you'll get a kick out of this one.https://www.bizarretheater.com/product-page/firework-do-not-disturb-le-double-feature-blu-ray https://srscinemastore.com/products/flesh-games-blu-rayhttps://linktr.ee/daviddawsonhttps://www.instagram.com/brobocop77/https://www.instagram.com/other_trash/Spilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Split Your Head - Season 4 - Episode 51 - Interview with Kalil Haddad (Victim of Circumstance)

Welcome to Season 4! Our first guest is Toronto-based filmmaker, Kalil Haddad, whose He Never Dies cycle of short films has been bursting brains with their acidic mix of queer themes and transgressive provocations. Often employing techniques of collage to a kaleidoscopic degree, Haddad mines the past with images of vintage gay erotica, morbid reality, and wistful nostalgia. It's a lot to chew on which made for an extremely compelling chat where we narrowly escaped peeling back the curtain a little too much a few times. Check this out now and get a glimpse into Kalil Haddad's singular world. https://kalilhaddad.com/https://www.instagram.com/kalil.haddad/Watch "Taking of Jordan" here: https://www.le-sigh.com/issue-14-kalil-haddad-fan-wu-enWatch "His Smell" here: https://www.labocine.com/films/his-smell-2023Spilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Split Your Head - Season 3 - Episode 50 - Interview with Lucky Cerruti (Boxcutter)

This final episode of Season 3 features an interview with Lucky Cerruti, a NY-based indie horror director whose newest film, Boxcutter, is one doozy of an ambitious feature. Feeling more like an anguish-filled grindhouse drama than a schlocky horror flick, Cerruti has taken a huge leap forward making for a highly compelling chat. We delve into the traumas that inspired the script, his directorial methods, and why this is such a groundbreaking achievement for him. We also got to talk shop about current death metal obsessions and then wrapped things up with one of the most provocative questionnaire conversations ever to happen on the show. Split Your Head - Season 3 - Episode 49 - Interview with Victor Gabriel (RFN Pictures)

Warning: Lots of potty-mouthed humour in this episode. This episode features a chat with Victor Gabriel, indie horror director and head honcho of RFN Pictures. As RFN stands for Reel F**kin' Nightmares, expect a lot of swears and a lot of silly vulgar humour, but also expect a fun chat! Victor's previous film "Blood Gorge" was a retro slasher homage and a gory hoot, but his next feature, "Hellmare", looks to take his ambitions to a whole new level. Built off of an incredibly entertaining concept, as well as Gabriel's trademark gory hijinks and crass humour, I'm just foaming at the mouth to see this when it finally hits the big screen! We had to keep this one short due to technical difficulties, but the homie Victor will be back. WARNING: Contains discussions on violence, sexuality, and potentially triggering subject matter. This episode features a discussion on films about Pain with two returning guests, Dr. Ethan Lyon and Jetta Weinstein! We cover Stephen Dwoskin's documentary on various examples of pain, "Pain Is..." (1997); Monika Treut & Elfi Mikesch's fictional tale of S&M power dynamics in "Seduction: The Cruel Woman" (1985); and Kirby Dick's documentary on Bob Flanagan, the masochistic performance artist who died from cystic fibrosis, in "Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist" (1997). All 3 of us offer wildly different takes and analysis of these challenging and provocative films. Split Your Head - Season 3 - Episode 46 - Discussion on Pink Films with Dakota Noot & Christopher Velasco

WARNING: CONTAINS DISCUSSIONS OF POTENTIALLY TRIGGERING OR UPSETTING CONTENT INVOLVING SEXUAL VIOLENCE AND GRAPHIC SEXUALITYThis episode sees the return of Dakota Noot and his husband Christopher Velasco, two LA-based artists that have been taking the deepest dive into Japanese pink films. With their podcast, Two in the Pinku, they've been documenting their discoveries, and now Dakota's writings on pink films have started to pop up in releases, such as 88 Film's most recent blu-ray of Tokyo Emmanuelle. With the announcement that Dakota is starting to work on a book on gay pink films, naturally I needed to have these two maniacal experts on to expand my perception of one of the most transgressive and intriguing genres to ever exist. Split Your Head - Season 3 - Episode 45 - Discussion on Abel Ferrara with Fred Barrett

This episode features long-time friend of the show, Fred Barrett! Fred is a writer based out of Germany with some of the most fascinating film analysis and he's come on to wax off about Abel Ferrara. I've been a huge fan of Ferrara's earlier moody genre flicks and grindhouse bangers (King of New York, Ms. 45, etc) but I've struggled to get into most of his work post-Bad Lieutenant. Fred and I cover all of his eras in chronological order, leading to a poignant discussion about how to approach these challenging and highly subjective films. This episode features an interview with Philly-based "mumblegore" filmmaker, Brewce Longo! Brewce has been churning out wild horror flicks that have a unique mix of drama and hangout vibes setting them apart. His latest, Vick & Tarstar's Scarecrow Factory, dives even deeper with a meta take on filmmaking that shows both the slimier side and the disappointing side of low-budget productions. Alice will be presenting 3 highly salacious flicks at the Paradise: Wakefield Poole's Bijou (Aug 2), Showgirls (Aug 8), and Castration Movie Pt 1(Aug 31). Split Your Head - Season 3 - Episode 42 - Interview with Daniel Valient (Gardenia) & Celeste Henry, aka Blucifer

WARNING: CONTAINS PROVOCATIVE DISCUSSIONS ON SENSITIVE SUBJECTS, SUCH AS VIOLENCE, RELIGION, POLITICS, AND SEXUALITY.This episode features the return of Daniel Valient from White Gardenia along with frequent collaborator Celeste Henry, aka Blucifer. Both artists operate in the extreme horror underground, with White Gardenia gaining notoriety for their unsimulated acts of self-harm. However, they're here to promote something tamer in content yet far more eerie and singular. "The King James Bible" is a chilling and dizzying adaptation of the bible, woven together by various artists and culminating in something unlike anything I've seen before. Daniel and Celeste touch on their intentions, obsessions, and future projects in this highly fascinating chat. Unfortunately due to technical difficulties the episode isn't as long as I would hope for, but all the same this is a provocative and compelling discussion that hopefully will pique your interest. https://www.bizarretheater.com/product-page/white-gardenia-s-john-calvin-le-blu-rayhttps://131xx.univer.se/https://www.instagram.com/gardeniadaniel/https://www.instagram.com/xpxmxsx.avenger/Spilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. This episode features an interview with Ryan Verrill from The Disc-Connected! Well, less an interview and more just a friendly chat between two dudes with similar experiences and passions. Before arriving at some exciting news about upcoming blu-ray releases that Ryan helped to produce, we somehow end up talking about hardcore punk, house shows, politics, and I'm sure lots of other stuff we were excited to dive into that may or may not have had anything to do with blu-rays. Grischuk is the head honcho of Box Creep films, churning out some of the wackiest lo-fi genre flicks, including his most recent banger: Battle Jacket. Split Your Head - Season 3 - Episode 38 - Discussion on Shinji Sōmai with Jerry McGlothlin

This episode features a provocative discussion of the underrated Japanese director, Shinji Sōmai. I've got excellent film writer Jerry McGlothlin on to discuss his works and recurring themes. Starting off with his recently restored Typhoon Club, I was drawn to Sōmai's unique and meditative take on the harsh coming-of-age film. Turns out that's a constant mode for him, with other films like P.P. Rider, Sailor Suit & Machine Gun, and Moving all delivering their own stabs at that painful loss of innocence. It was a fantastic chat and I hope it urges you to check out some of his films! Along with his company, Elytra Collective, Leroy has been popping out some of the zaniest and most ambitious SOV horror/comedy shorts I've ever laid my eyes on. Split Your Head - Season 3 - Episode 36 - Interview with Jeroen Bijil (Horrible Reviews)

WARNING: This episode contains discussions of disturbing and controversial subject matter, including violence and sexual content. This episode I'm joined by Jeroen Bijil, the host of Horrible Reviews! Jeroen's fascinating YouTube channel has been dishing out prolific videos covering so many types of films, but his bread and butter is DISTURBING MOVIES. He's gained a massive following diving into some of the most upsetting, horrific, and provocative films out there, so naturally he's got quite a perspective on it. I also appreciate how open-minded and critical he is, not at all a narrow-minded cinephile but a curiously adventurous consumer of all types of movies. We focused especially on "The Coffee Table", "Melancholie Der Engel", and "Larva Mental", but those were just perfect jumping off points to go even further down the rabbit hole. WARNING: This episode contains discussions of disturbing and controversial subject matter, including violence and sexual assault. This episode I've got SOV filmmaker Susana Kapostasy on to talk about her most recent film, The Emasculator, as well as her previous work, Night of the Zodiac & Metal Maniac. Susana is a one-of-a-kind true artist, brimming with knowledge of exploitation cinema, making amazing comparisons between Italian Neo-Realism to SOV horror but also throwing her Thanksgiving meal onto a plate of nachos for true decadence. She's also a vet tech too with plenty of gnarly stories under her belt. I learned a lot, I laughed a lot, and I'm officially on the Susana Kapostasy train. Can't wait to see what she does next! And we're back! For the first episode of Season 3, Louise Weard has returned to talk about her expansive harsh indie drama, Castration Movie Part 1 & 2. Like Mike Leigh or RW Fassbinder strained through a DIY Dogme95 sensibility multiplied by queer punk rock urgency, Part 1 was 4+ hours of nuanced character studies that resonated in the most unflinching way. Louise is just about to film Part 2, so we dove into the whole universe she's been creating. Naturally, I had to have Kelly on to pick her brain about this new series and why the heck she, like so many of us, are drawn to the extreme side of horror. https://linktr.ee/tabooterrors https://www.spinstersofhorror.com/ https://www.instagram.com/venal_anatomica/ https://letterboxd.com/venal_anatomica/Spilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 27 - Discussion on Sequels with Seth Troyer (Vertigo 2/Unwatchables)

This sequel drenched episode contains a doozy of a chat with Seth Troyer, a filmmaker, musician, and fellow podcaster based out of Ohio. You may know him from co-hosting Unwatchables, but he’s recently dropped a hilarious experimental short film called “Vertigo 2” that is so meta and bonkers I couldn’t wait to chat with him about it once my head stopped spinning. We dive into all of the problems and miracles born out of creating sequels, the big/weird franchises, and still have enough braincells left for the mysterious career of Alan Smithee. Dive in for a fun brain-scrambling discussion! https://youtu.be/P2q4b7rze-s?si=DvrQGUPiGsX1nHat http://unwatchablespod.com https://letterboxd.com/slothtroyer/ https://linktr.ee/Sethtroyer91 https://www.instagram.com/seth.troyer/Spilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 26 - Discussion on Naomi Tani/Pink Films with Dakota Noot

WARNING: This episode contains discussions of disturbing and controversial subject matter, including violence and sexual assault. Dakota Noot is an LA based visual artist who has recently become completely enthralled in the world of Pinku Eigas. These Japanese erotic/exploitation films are incredibly unique, disturbing, and in turn fascinating, so Dakota takes me through his deep dive into the genre as well as focusing on the Queen of Pink - Naomi Tani! This was an in-depth and exhilarating chat about some extremely WTF films. Prepare to hear about some shocking content but also get a notepad ready to jot down some of these wild titles. https://letterboxd.com/dakotanoot/ https://www.dakotanoot.com/ https://www.instagram.com/dakotanoot/ https://www.tiktok.com/@dakotanoot https://hyperallergic.com/author/dakota-noot/ https://www.youtube.com/@dakotanootSpilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 25 - Discussion on Takashi Ishii with Fred Barrett

WARNING: This episode contains discussions of disturbing and controversial subject matter, including violence and sexual assault. This episode features a discussion of the underrated Japanese writer/director Takashi Ishii with returning guest Fred Barrett. Fred came on last season to discuss Hisayasu Sato after writing a phenomenal piece on Pink Films for the Big Ship. When I asked Fred to come back for another deep dive, he suggested we tackle Takashi Ishii, who is most well known for writing Evil Dead Trap, the Angel Guts series, and a handful of other seedy crime flicks that came out in the 90's. Who knew that once we looked under the hood of this provocative filmmaker, we'd find a ton of uncomfortable yet striking ideas. We discuss a lot of potentially triggering subject matter, specifically sexual assault, as it's a running theme in his films and with a perspective that may be hard to wrap your head around. So heads up for that! Despite the dark material discussed, it was great to reconnect with Fred and explore these films. Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 24 - Interview with Cory DeAn Cowley

WARNING: This episode contains disturbing and graphic subject matter. If you're at all squeamish, please keep that in mind. This episode features a lovely chat with Cory DeAn Cowley, the "Lady of Decay", a super talented actor, director, and FX artist whose most recent film "Trypophobic Possession" shocked me to my core with its intense body-horror textural hellscapes. Cory, however, is anything but a scary person and so we had quite the fun chat going through her metal music video origins, insane lengths to create extreme horror, growing up in Tennessee, and much much more. The chat was a blast and with the slate of films she's got coming out, I can't recommend this one enough! http://www.officialcorydeancowley.com http://www.instagram.com/foliumdiscognitum2/ https://tetrovideo.com/shop/trypophobic-posession-blu-ray-numbered-mediabook-edition/ https://m.imdb.com/name/nm14182842/Spilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 23 - Interview with Dave Jackson & Guy from Show Me Something Wrong!

Guy is back and this time he's joined by his podcasting co-host, Dave Jackson! Guy and Dave are two wild underground horror filmmakers that now both reside in Japan where they conduct their highly addictive podcast, Show Me Something Wrong. In this series, they explore films that they deem "wrong" - ya know, films that are provocative, baffling, controversial, or just completely WTF. Thanks to their meticulous research and friendly rapport, their exploration of each esoteric film is all the more entertaining. I just had to have them on to chat about how these films feed back into their own work and what exactly is up with Japanese p*rn??? This led to some very shocking stories about their adventures attending Pink cinemas. Heads up, this one gets pretty gnarly! https://podtail.com/podcast/show-me-something-wrong/ https://allmylinks.com/smsw https://www.instagram.com/showmesomethingwrong/Spilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 22 - Amy Hensarling & Jetta Weinstein discuss "Bug"/"Ravenous"

This episode features Amy Hensarling and Jetta Weinstein, two podcasting/film-writing buds who both made appearances on the first season. Once I heard the inaugural episode of Amy's new series, She Said/She Said, where Jetta came on to dissect a couple films, I just knew I needed both of them on to discuss a couple horror flicks. Jetta picked William Friedkin's "Bug" (2006") and Antonia Bird's "Ravenous" (1999) and off we went pulling apart the themes and subtext of these two powerful/singular films. Fun was had! Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 21 - Interview with Jonathan Doe & Daniel Valient/White Gardenia

WARNING: This episode contains some very disturbing and controversial subject matter. If you're at all squeamish or easily offended, please keep that in mind before listening. This episode features one of the most intense and provocative discussions thus far as I interviewed Jonathan Doe along with Daniel Valient from the collective White Gardenia. Both artists operate within the extreme horror underground, each with their own prolific output of increasingly shocking work, so when Doe released a documentary on White Gardenia - "The Art of Self Harm" - that made me want to invite them both on and dig deeper into their unique worlds. Again, Proceed With Caution and keep in mind that while Daniel Valient's politics are quite brazen, they do not reflect the politics of Split Your Head or myself. However, this led to a very interesting chat and one that made me want to take a closer look at this devout Christian/Trump supporter who participates in self mutilation for their own art. https://putridproductions.bigcartel.com/ https://www.youtube.com/c/CinemasUnderbelly https://www.youtube.com/c/MurderabiliaShowTell https://www.facebook.com/cinemasunderbelly/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100014264823225 https://filmfreeway.com/danielvalient https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEtnA8-mv6DIV5sReOPd8TASpilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 20 - Interview with Terry Chiu (Open Doom Crescendo)

This episode features an incredibly inspiring chat with Montreal-based filmmaker Terry Chiu, whose latest feature film Open Doom Crescendo is one of the wildest, weirdest, and most epic movies I've ever seen! ODC is really an "Experience" so singular and bursting with creativity that you'd expect Terry to be swimming in avant-garde art. Instead, Chiu is a devoted fan of the Insidious films and loves superhero movies. It's a refreshing change of pace for me and led to us having loads of interesting conversations about making DIY art and why music might just be the most influential thing to exist. This episode features a chat with Finlay Blake, the singer of Last Retch, a death metal band from Hamilton, ON who have just released a brand new EP called Ergotism on CDN Records. Finlay is one scary dude on stage, but the complete opposite of that when he's not making a warpath of guttural destruction with his gnarly vocals. We talk about the Salem witch trial influences of the new EP, all the ups and downs of getting a band off the ground, and our love for the various strains of death metal before diving into a full on chat about extreme horror! This episode I got to interview Zarrar Kahn whose debut feature, In Flames, has been unleashed in North American theatres as of April 12th. Kahn's film is a doozy of patriarchal oppression, supernatural malevolence, and seething angst, all set in Karachi, Pakistan where two women struggle with the loss of the family patriarch. It's a super impressive debut and gave us plenty to talk about, like wrangling fire stunts, shooting a film during the pandemic, and Kahn's refreshing attitude on genre cinema. We also just gush about our love for films that end "in flames" and so much more! This episode's special guest is Rob Jabbaz, a Canadian filmmaker who created my favourite film of 2022 - The Sadness! If you haven't watched it yet, what are you waiting for?? It's one of the most brutal and exhilarating takes on a "viral horror flick" where people are succumbing to a mysterious infection that turns them into sadistic psychopaths. We talk about how his film was received in Taiwan where it was made, his new comic book Black Urn, artistic processes, listening to metal, and the usual mind-boggling questionnaire that really got Rob cookin'. Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 16 - Interview with David Dawson (Flesh Games, Other Trash Films)

Second episode of Season 2 and we've got the talented underground filmmaker, David Dawson. David's been carving out a unique style over the past few years, getting his friends together to shoot films that blend drama and horror together in an exciting way. His last film, "Flesh Games", took a Jackass-style mock-doc from goofy hijinx to nightmare cinema. A bit of genre-hopping sculpted to get the senses buzzing, if ya catch my drift. So naturally, David and I spent half the time talking about hardcore punk shows, haha. Don't worry there's plenty here about his films because they truly rule and he's an exciting director to keep tabs on. Either way, fun chat, fun guy, check it out! If you're in the Toronto area, his last film "Flesh Games" will be playing at Eyesore Cinema as part of Terrible Fest on Saturday March 23rd. https://terribletoonietuesday.tumblr.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@UCQ5slhAiRq5uyaa-SEZhGqw https://linktr.ee/daviddawson https://srscinemastore.com/products/flesh-games-blu-ray https://www.instagram.com/brobocop77/Spilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Split Your Head - Season 2, Episode 15 - Interview with Stephen Grischuk of Box Creep Films

The first episode of Season 2 is actually the last episode of Season 1! Yes, this particular recording was Frankenstein-ed together after numerous technical difficulties led to failed attempt after failed attempt - but we persevered because 1) THIS GUEST IS STEPHEN F**KIN' GRISCHUK, and 2) Stephen friggin' Grischuk! If you don't know him yet, you will know him soon, an indie horror filmmaker bursting with charm and zany FX. His films are barrels of fun, complete with gnarly gore and wily creatures, but you can always feel like as soon as the take ended, Grischuk and his crew burst into laughter because of how much fun they were having. I'm a big fan of his work and him as a person (he rules). So please, check this out and check out his films and thanks for hopping back. Season 1, Episode 12 - Interview with Unwatchables Podcast (Seth, Marc & Tony)

This episode might be the funniest one yet as I welcome the three dudes that produce one of my favourite podcasts: Unwatchables. Seth Troyer, Marc Dottavio, and Tony Scarpitti take extreme/challenging/avant-garde/wtf cinema analysis to a whole new level and I brought them on to pick their brains on what it's been like to endure films like Salo: 120 Days of Sodom and Space Jam: A New Legacy. We had a blast chatting about gritty, goofy, and gruesome cinema. This episode's special guest is none other than Payson Power from death metal astronauts, Tomb Mold! Payson also runs the horror & cult film long-sleeve shirt company, BodyBags, so we spent way more time gushing over Charles Bronson flicks than putrid riffs but plenty of time was still spent on Tomb Mold's brand new album, The Enduring Spirit, as well as his instrumental math-pop project, Daydream Plus! It was refreshing to talk about music along with films, so hopefully I'll have more musicians on in the future... just so long as they are as opinionated and passionate as Payson!
