What the NIL Gold Rush Got Wrong | Stephen Bienko of 42U

When NIL took off, most of the attention went to deals, collectives, and monetization. Much less attention went to the person behind it all: the athlete, their identity, and whether they are actually being prepared for what comes next.In this episode, Eric talks with Stephen Bienko, co-founder and CEO of 42U, about the gap between athlete value and athlete development. The conversation touches NIL, the transfer portal, brand equity, leadership in college athletics, financial literacy, and the life skills that still matter most. What Stephen Bienko and Eric Discuss:Stephen’s transfer from the Air Force Academy to Villanova and how that shaped his thinkingWhat NIL revealed about athlete value — and what it still fails to addressHow 42U approaches athlete identity, development, and long-term brand buildingWhy college athletics has leadership and infrastructure gaps right nowThe difference between chasing NIL deals and building brand equityHow the transfer portal has changed communication, decision-making, and developmentWhy soft skills still matter in an AI-heavy worldFinancial literacy as a real need inside the athlete ecosystemWhy athletes influence enrollment, culture, and school visibility beyond the fieldThe role of facilities, community, and environment in athlete developmentFull Show NotesThere has been no shortage of NIL conversation over the past few years, but much of it has centered on money, marketplaces, and short-term opportunity. Stephen Bienko brings a different lens. His view is that NIL exposed the value of the athlete, but the system still hasn’t built enough around developing the human being behind that value. That idea sits at the center of 42U, the company Bienko co-founded. Rather than focusing only on transactions or exposure, the work is more about identity, communication, self-awareness, decision-making, and long-term development. In other words, what actually helps an athlete build something durable instead of just reacting to the moment.Eric and Stephen also get into the broader college sports environment, including the transfer portal, recruiting, leadership gaps, and the changing demands being placed on young athletes. A recurring theme is that performance alone is not enough. Athletes are being asked to navigate visibility, pressure, personal branding, and business decisions earlier than ever. The episode also explores brand equity, financial literacy, and the value of so-called soft skills in a world increasingly shaped by technology and automation. It is a thoughtful conversation about what college athletics rewards, what it overlooks, and what athletes may need if they want to build a career and identity that lasts beyond sports.Notable Quotes“NIL did one thing — it exposed the value of the athlete. But no one built the infrastructure to develop the human.”“College sports is not a business. But there’s a lot of business in college sports.”“Stop chasing deals. Build brand equity.”“An 18-year-old with a phone and a following is now a media company.”“The question is: does this deal reinforce who I am — or distort it?”Chapters in This Episode00:00 – Intro 01:27 – Stephen’s Transfer Story: Air Force Academy to Villanova 04:00 – A Hard Conversation With Coach DeBerry 07:54 – What the NIL Boom Missed 09:24 – What 42U Actually Does 14:03 – Athlete Identity and Long-Term Development 18:19 – Leadership Gaps in College Athletics 21:51 – Athletes as Economic Engines for Schools 25:47 – The Meaning and Value of Soft Skills 29:51 – Recruiting, Evaluation, and Mental Capacity 35:27 – “College Sports Is Not a Business” 47:19 – Stop Chasing Deals. Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Chaos & Why NFL Fans Are All Delusional | Saviors & Sports

Quick Summary Eric and Jared try to make sense of the Cleveland Browns, front office dysfunction across the NFL, and why every fan base believes they suffer more than anyone else. Baker, Stafford, Shadur, the 49ers, Vegas lines, billionaire owners, and the eternal misery of the Vikings all make an appearance. This is a 12-minute sports-only segment clipped from Saviors of the Metaverse — now living in the SportsE feed where it belongs. Listen to the full Saviors of the Metaverse episode: The Running Man Review Through the Lonely Eyes of a Gen Xer | via YouTube — Apple Podcasts — Spotify Chapters 00:00 — Browns in a simulation: If Cleveland is 12–0 and undefeated Carolina exists, you’re probably dreaming. 00:50 — NFL fan misery rankings: Vikings, Browns, Bills… who actually has it worst? 02:40 — Missed kicks, cursed teams, and broken timelines: From Gary Anderson to Dante Culpepper. 04:10 — Is it all the front office’s fault?: And does “blow it up” ever work? 05:20 — Billionaire owners & the weird economics of NFL success: They win even when the team doesn’t. 06:45 — Baker, Stafford & the QB comparison spiral: Why Stafford throws lasers and Baker throws… effort. 08:00 — The Shadur Sanders paradox: Social media hype vs. reality vs. development. 09:30 — Browns upcoming schedule: 49ers, Titans, Bears, Bills — and the eternal pain cycle. 11:20 — “Bet the Browns, lose the spread”: Why Cleveland is 5–6 ATS and still maddening. TL;DR The Browns are confusing, the Vikings are cursed, owners are billionaires who always win, Shadur Sanders has promise but not proof yet, and betting Cleveland still hurts. Fans everywhere live in the same delusion: “nobody has it worse than us.” Other Topics We Hit The Vikings’ most traumatic moments Why owners are built like a different species West coast teams traveling east: real disadvantage or Reddit myth? The cult of QB hype via viral “dot throws” Why every NFL fan base thinks their suffering is unique The job market — because why not Why Listen Because you want NFL takes without the clichés — just two Gen-X lunatics trying to decode the Browns and the universe. FAQ  Q: Why do the Browns continue to struggle despite talent? Front office instability and questionable decision-making — plus a culture that hasn’t fully reset. Q: Are the Vikings or Browns the more cursed franchise? Depends on your trauma profile. Vikings lose big moments; Browns lose everything else. Q: Why is Shadur Sanders so polarizing? Social media hype + limited NFL sample + Deion effect = unstable QB stock. Q: Do NFL owner billions matter on the field? Not really — salary cap levels the roster. But ego drives decisions. Q: Why is betting the Browns so painful? They’re 5–6 ATS — slightly better than their record, still emotionally ruinous. The most significant of these efforts came in 1961 with the Federal Wire Act, which aimed to curb organized crime by banning all forms of interstate wagering on sports. Lisa Bonta Sumii on the Importance of Therapy

An Athlete Mindset special episode featuring Lisa Bonta Summi’s thoughts on the importance of therapy. In this episode, Lisa Bonta Sumii discusses the following topics: The importance of seeking out a mental health professional. Therapy does not make you weak, and you don’t have to tell everything to your therapist. You can engage in preventative therapy; you don’t have to wait for something to happen. You can go through a consultation with a therapist to know if it’s a good fit. Friends are not a substitute for therapy; both are really important. Hockey Goes South

In this episode of The Sports Backdrop podcast, we chat with Chris Heivly, a successful entrepreneur (co-founder of MapQuest), and an ardent lover of hockey. Chris resides in the Raleigh, North Carolina area — after spending 10 years in the bustling city of Chicago (and before that, the northeast). This hockey goes south episode is about growing up with hockey, the impact of hockey on family, and hockey culture. We also discuss cities, moving, and life decisions. Cities mentioned: Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Boulder, Chicago, Buffalo, Lancaster, PA. Key Discussion Points in This Episode Life Decisions and Moving to the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Area: Our conversation begins with Chris explaining his move from chilly Chicago to sunny Raleigh-Durham, primarily driven by the weather. This decision was also fueled by the need for a place that could nurture his ventures, given Chicago’s then lack of familiarity with the internet in the early 2000’s Choosing Cities to Live In: Chris discusses the process of choosing his new home, comparing Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill with Boulder, Colorado. He shares insights into his preference for secondary cities that foster a faster pace of life and work, alongside being closer to aging parents on the East Coast. The Appeal of Secondary Cities for Business: The discussion shifts to how often businesses, especially in the early days, were pressured to settle in major cities like San Francisco, New York, or Boston. Chris gives his perspective on why he chose not to adhere to this norm, despite building multiple businesses. Hockey and Life Beyond Business: We explore Chris’s love for hockey, reminiscing about his childhood where hockey was a way of life. He shares a special family tradition of attending away games of the Philadelphia Flyers, kindled by a shared love of the sport. The Culture of Hockey: We discuss the fascinating culture of hockey and its growth in areas you wouldn’t typically expect to thrive. Chris likens the hockey fanbase to the community of entrepreneurs, both “second-tier” but equally passionate and tightly knit tribes. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a hockey enthusiast, or someone looking for insights on life decisions and specifically how to think about where to live, this ” Hockey Goes South ” episode is for you. Sports Culture | England vs USA

TL;DR: In this episode of The Sports Backdrop, Eric Kasimov (USA) and Jim James (England) compare sports culture across the Atlantic—from promotion and relegation to college athletics, youth sports, and career paths. Using football (soccer) as the lens, the conversation explores how sports systems shape business, education, and opportunity in very different ways. Sports Culture Across the Atlantic Across the Atlantic, there is a unique sports culture. And no matter what side of the Atlantic you are on, England’s or the USA’s, the sports culture is fascinating. Everything from relegation, history, depth, drafts, transfer windows, passion, youth sports, and much more. In the latest episode of “The Sports Backdrop” podcast, Eric Kasimov of the United States, along with Jim James of England, explores how sports can serve as a platform for broader discussions, using football (soccer) as the case study. Promotion, Relegation, and Competitive Structure The conversation begins with the cultural differences between sports in the US and the UK, focusing primarily on football. The Premier League’s system of relegation and promotion is a unique aspect of English football (and other international leagues) that contrasts starkly with the US sports model, where relegation does not exist. They then move on to discuss the differences in the collegiate sports systems of the two countries. While US universities serve as training grounds for athletes with scholarships, UK universities don’t have a similar emphasis on sports. This divergence has led to unique opportunities for international students, including the chance to compete in the US collegiate sports scene. Infrastructure, Scale, Financial Reality, and Youth Soccer Another point of discussion was the sports infrastructure in both countries. In the UK, there are so many teams across different divisions, providing depth to the competition. In contrast, the US has a more singular focus, but with larger sports enterprises and substantial financial involvement. The conversation extends to the commercialization of youth sports in the US, where participation can cost thousands of dollars, in contrast to the UK, where costs are significantly lower. This leads to an interesting discussion about the growing entrepreneurial opportunities within sports, particularly around major events and famous athletes. Sports, Careers, and the Entrepreneurial Path Finally, these entrepreneurs discuss career paths in today’s society, emphasizing that traditional linear careers are becoming less common. They propose that interests and personal fascinations can guide individuals to learn new skills and gain experiences that may not be directly linked to their fields of study. In conclusion, the episode provides an engaging comparison of sports cultures and their influence on society, education, and business in the UK and the US. It also provides insights into the emerging trend of career exploration driven by personal interest and entrepreneurial spirit. FAQ Q: What is this episode mainly about? It compares sports culture in England and the United States, using football (soccer) to explore differences in competition, education, youth sports, and career paths. Q: Why focus on promotion and relegation? Because it highlights a fundamental difference between European and U.S. sports systems—merit-based movement versus closed leagues—and how that affects teams, fans, and long-term strategy. Q: How do college sports differ between the US and UK? In the U.S., universities play a major role in athlete development through scholarships and competition. In the UK, sports are less integrated into higher education, creating different development paths. Q: What role does youth sports play in the discussion? The episode contrasts the high cost and commercialization of youth sports in the U.S. with the more accessible, lower-cost model common in the UK. Q: Is this episode only for sports fans? No. It’s also about culture, business, and how people think about careers and opportunity in modern society. Interested in how sports intersect with culture, business, and opportunity? Athletes to Entrepreneurs

This is a unique guest-hosted episode of the Sports Backdrop. And it’s all about life after sports… Athletes to Entrepreneurs. Recently I have had the opportunity to connect with and spend time with Rob Finkelstein, all thanks to Tim Claiborne and his Lockerroom sports group. Rob is the CEO & Founder of Alumni Direct. And he is the host of the podcast Athletes to Entrepreneurs. We’re bringing an episode of his show to the SportsEpreneur platform because it’s all about sports, entrepreneurship, and mental health. And with that, here’s a special episode of athletes to entrepreneurs. About the Athletes to Entrepreneurs podcast: Athletes to Entrepreneurs is a podcast where Rob speaks with former college and professional athletes from all over the world as they share the joys, successes, failures, and lessons of their entrepreneurial journey. Hosted by Rob Finkelstein of Alumni Direct, the number-one network for alumni worldwide. Listen to the AtoE podcast. About this episode: A conversation with Tim Wright, Superbowl champion, multi-passionate entrepreneur, and co-founder of Dome Audio. Tim Wright: “Sports was very important to my foundation. That’s where you learn how to win. That’s where you learn how to lose. And later on in life, I learned that you either win or you learn. So taking the lessons of what you were able to learn in that loss is what you’re then able to apply to that game next week or the practice the next day, and really get better. And that’s the same thing throughout life and the same thing in entrepreneurship.” Tim’s advice to current athletes: “When I got on the field, I made it count. And that’s the most important thing. The time you get, make it count.” Wrapping up: digital sports media brand for entrepreneurs engaged in sports: SportsE want to create impactful content: KazCM Social media: Eric Kasimov: LinkedIn | Twitter  KazSource: TikTok | YouTube SportsE: Instagram | Twitter Athletes to Entrepreneurs: Podcast Rob Finkelstein: LinkedIn  Alumni Direct LLC: Website Tim Wright: LinkedIn | Dome Audio Related content to “Athletes to Entrepreneurs”: SE Perspective | Your Sporting Career Is Over: What Now? The future of sports betting and Frontrunner’s innovative vision and profile Addressing concerns around addiction in gambling, sports betting, and fantasy sports Managing stress and visionary thinking as a startup founder Embracing Web3 technology and its role in shaping Frontrunner’s platform Selling positions and how the market works in sports betting Neil’s take on the state of college education More about the guest, Neil Zhang: Neil Brett Zhang was born in Philadelphia, and after moving to St. Louis, then to New York City, he returned to Philadelphia as a University of Pennsylvania student. He graduated with a BAS in computer science and fine arts in May of 2016. He worked in New York City as a member of Nielsen, primarily in data science before attending the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania for his MBA with a concentration in finance and marketing. Neil enjoys cooking and all things sports, with a particular interest in analytics and sports data modeling. More on the vision of Frontrunner: “In 2019, I placed a bet at the beginning of the season on the long shot San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl LIV. They would go on to make it to the Super Bowl but ended up losing. Despite being 99% right, I couldn’t cash in on my success. I then asked myself, “Why can’t I change my bet or position at any time and profit?” This one question turned into many I had with my friends, who became founders – all of them landing at the same conclusion – the modern sports fan is being underserved through antiquated ways of sports betting. The idea of stock market-style sports betting was born. Coping With Emotions After Witnessing the Damar Hamlin Traumatic Event

At this point, we’ve all seen or at least heard about what happened in the Buffalo Bills vs Cincinnati Bengals Monday Night Football game in early January 2023. Damar Hamlin, a 24-year-old safety for the Bills suffered cardiac arrest after what seemed like a routine tackle. Damar collapsed on the field in front of millions of people watching. Such an event has an impact on the mental health of all of the players on the field, coaches, other teams, fans, and everyone watching the game. In this conversation, we invited a mental health professional to discuss coping with emotions after witnessing what as Lisa says, “was a traumatic event”. Lisa Bonta Sumii is someone we have respect and admiration for — and her voice is needed. Lisa advises on how to and how not to cope with a traumatic event. This includes talking about the emotions you felt during the event, staying away from the 24-hour news cycle, journaling, and other coping skills. It is extremely critical to process those emotions and to seek emotional support as soon as possible after a traumatic event. The Alarming Impact of Powerful Psychiatric Drugs on Mental Health

A conversation with the director and producer of the essential documentary, Medicating Normal. We talk a lot about mental health on this platform, so we have to discuss with Lynn Cunningham the medication side of mental health. It’s clear there is a need for more awareness of the potential effects of medications. It’s also necessary to continue to learn about other possible solutions — such as getting enough sleep and following a healthy diet. Twenty years ago, as Lynn was becoming a parent herself, she witnessed with crushing despair the dramatic transformation of a beloved family member. Once a bright, high-functioning student-athlete having graduated from an elite college, Lynn’s relative had become in a few short years– a terrified, suicidal shell of her former self— diagnosed with serious mental illness. Putting their faith in the best psychiatric standard of care in the late 90s, Lynn and her family were initially reassured by the relief and stability provided by medication and therapy. After a ten-year period, however, one medicine had become ten, and income from a vibrant, self-sufficient career was replaced with monthly disability payments. Unable to provide an answer to her relative’s persistent self-doubt, “Is everything going to be OK?” Lynn began searching for answers. She joined with her filmmaking partner Wendy Ractliffe, embarking on five years of research into the complex world of mental health treatment. After discovering Robert Whitaker’s Anatomy of an Epidemic, they interviewed 100s of psychiatric patients and consulted with scores of experts across the country about their experiences. A personal quest to help one suffering individual turned into a mission to tell an untold story. In Medicating Normal, Lynn and Wendy began to piece together a stunning new perspective on the safety and efficacy of psychiatric drugs and society’s overreliance on them to relieve pain and suffering. Here’s more about our podcast guest, Eric Kussin. Founder of We’re All A Little Crazy #SameHere The Global Mental Health Movement 20-year pro sports exec who was fortunate enough to find a higher calling after an intense mental health battle. Launched a global alliance of athletes and celebrities, along with expert practitioners: We’re All A Little “Crazy,” & #SameHereThe Global Mental Health Movement. Our members believe that life challenges affect all of us, no matter our backgrounds or careers, and that our mental health exists on a spectrum that we all fluctuate on, as opposed to: “the 1 in 5 sick vs the 4 in 5 healthy.” Together, we are using our platforms and consistent messaging to change the narrative around the world, educate the masses, implement much-needed programs on the ground (programs with schools, colleges, corporate offices, sports teams, service men/women & first responders), and make it socially acceptable for everyone to ask for help when they need it. The #SameHereMovement is a campaign you will see woven throughout our communications. This is a sign language gesture that can be used universally in the context of the mental health world to mean: Same here, I too struggle with some of life’s inevitable challenges, and yes those challenges have affected my mental health. Brazilian Football + NFTs | Bruno Pessoa

Former Brazilian footballer combines Brazilian football and NFTs at the youth level. As our guest, Bruno Pessoa says, “football is like religion” in Brazil. So enabling the connection between fans and players makes so much sense with new Web3 technology like NFTs. What if we told you there’s a digital way of investing in young Brazilian footballers that gives you access and possible upside? Blockchain technology meets footballer, entrepreneur, and Web3 enthusiast Bruno Pessoa. This new age of collectibles is bringing fans and players closer than ever before. In this episode of Sports Bring People Together, host Eric Kasimov chats with Bruno Pessoa, a former Brazilian footballer for Flamengo and a youth sports enthusiast. Bruno is a lifelong football fan (soccer fan) who turned his passion for football into a successful business. He works with youth athletes, specifically, the top football players in Brazil, skyrocketing their player brand and generating new revenue streams for both the players and their fans — through NFTs. By collecting these “packs” (cards) (NFTs), verifiable owners (on the blockchain) will have opportunities to interact with the players and gain access (tickets) to special games or events like the FIFA World Cup. And any NFT has the potential for upside–just imagine owning a Ronaldo NFT when he was a young teenager?! What drove Bruno to lean into this idea of combining youth Brazilian football and NFTs? During his time playing the game, Bruno saw young athletes often struggle with generating income and feel powerless to make their own decisions off the pitch. This inspired him to found Next Level Sports (now Next Academy) with the goal to generate opportunities for young Brazilian football players. After granting 1,500 plus kids the opportunity to receive sports scholarships in the US, Bruno sold his first business. His latest venture, Tero Labs, recently announced its first proprietary IP called Rough Diamonds which provides footballers under the age of 21 with revenue-based opportunities — while giving owners of the NFTs fan-based experiences and more. As collectibles join the digital space, fans are being presented with new opportunities to invest in young talent. With Rough Diamonds, football fans (soccer) are able to purchase memorabilia and personalized experiences from young Brazilian talent – they selected the top 11 up-and-coming football players from Brazil, the world’s largest exporter of talent in the sport, to create their exclusive NFTs. Most recently, Tero Labs has signed a collaboration agreement with Crypto.com NFT to work together on Rough Diamonds, and jointly develop an exclusive football jersey in the form of an exclusive NFT collection for the Rough Diamonds team. Topics discussed in this episode: World Cup 2022 Brazil’s World Cup chances Goalkeeper mentality Licensing player brand Helping youth players generate new revenue streams through NFTs How does the new age of collectibles bring players and fans closer Soccer in the US vs traditional sports and Major League Soccer (MLS) In case you haven’t noticed, we love podcasts. Cybersecurity for Web3 | Conversation with Eden Data Founder, Taylor Hersom

Cybersecurity for web3 is going to be massive. Security is already a $132 Billion industry–we have to talk about it… Do you lock your car doors? Of course you do. If your car and the items in it are important enough to protect, shouldn’t these bits of digital information be worthy of protecting: bank account passwords, private information, and other assets? Sounds reasonable. So then why do people not take cybersecurity seriously? And I mean very seriously. A password of kitty123 does not qualify as “very seriously”. If theft happens online and someone loses access to say their Crypto wallet, why are we surprised? Theft is nothing new. Go read crime logs and see how many thefts happened just yesterday. Now I get it, cybersecurity “seems” like a lot of effort and very boring. What if it didn’t have to be? And more, what if was as essential as closing and locking the door behind you? As our work and lives become more digital which includes an aim to web3, it’s more essential than ever to up our “security hygiene” when it comes to cybersecurity for web3. Featured Guest: Taylor Hersom | founder and CEO of Eden Data | Eden Data is a cybersecurity company offering scalable security teams and CISOs (Chief Information Security Officers) to address security, compliance, and data privacy for startups, especially in the Web3 space. In this SportsE+ podcast episode, we talk with The Fantasy Football Counselor himself — and he makes it known that he is the best there is in fantasy football. He provides his own unique style that is filled with confidence, honesty, and in-your-face content. He is a disrupter in the fantasy football industry and he loves it. Underneath all of it, is the loss of his father. Growing up watching football with his father is what he remembers–and when his father suddenly passed, Joseph Robert K’amo took his passion for football and fantasy football to another level. The Fantasy Football Counselor has confidence for days and in this competitive market, he knows he needs to stand out. He is front and center on YouTube (with 30K+ subscribers) and Instagram (242K followers) — and his appeal is the aggressive style that his fans love (and some hate), but he is there for all of it. Ultimately, The Fantasy Football Counselor is creating a ton of content and then repurposing that content — and with it, he is earning fans and selling products — all of it around a passion born from his upbringing and father. As he says, he couldn’t possibly work for someone else, so he is all in on this entrepreneurship journey. And this episode shows you that if you have a passion for something there’s a chance you could turn what you love into what you do. For some, life’s trials and tribulations that are thrown at us in a whirlwind often lead to several stages of grief, including depression, anger, denial –– and hope. Throughout the cycle of grief, when acceptance is near, some decide to throw a Hail Mary and rise from the ashes of grief, like Joseph Robert K’amo, founder of the popular sports podcast, The Fantasy Football Counselor.  His grief led him to chase his passion of being the authentic voice of sports after his beloved father suddenly passed away five years ago. Unfulfilled in his previous line of work as a salesperson, Joseph had a life-changing epiphany that led him to re-evaluate his life and career after his father’s passing. Since that day, Joseph has been transforming the way football fans make educated decisions about drafting and managing their fantasy football teams through his show where Joseph brings truth to his avid listeners. Building his business from the ground up over the past 5+ years, Joseph has given a voice to the fans. His podcast receives 20K – 40K downloads per episode and his honesty is appreciated by fans nationwide. Joseph is a former MMA fighter, loves the underdog, and studies the game of football with a passion. SportsMatterz | College Basketball Needs to Change with Fran Fraschilla

“College basketball is on an island.” – Coach Alan Major in conversation with Fran Fraschilla Who better to talk to about the practical and essential changes college basketball needs to make in order to evolve and keep up with basketball globally? In today’s game, college basketball is just one of the options that exist before entering the NBA. It wasn’t that long ago that this sport was the only option. International basketball, the G League, and Overtime Elite are other options for graduating high school players. And the thing is, each one of those alternatives is growing fast. The international game is clearly having an impact, as some of the best NBA players did not play college basketball, including Nikola Jokić and Luka Dončić. Now, none of these other options has March Madness, but the NCAA Basketball Tournament is only three weekends in March and early April. While it is an opportunity for players to make a name for themselves (see Ja Morant) and for collegiate sports programs to rake in cash, college basketball needs to change. As we look for solutions, we talk with former college basketball coach at St. John’s and Manhattan and the leader of covering international basketball, Fran Fraschilla. Fran Fraschilla talks about coaching in college basketball, the 24-second shot clock, and more. Transcript from a segment of this episode on the challenges of finding a therapist: Eric: There’s no shortage of news to talk about. There are a couple of things as you mention expanding your footprint, and I think of like, well that’s essential because I keep hearing these stories of lack of access to mental health professionals. There are challenges in finding a therapist. Derek: I know Eric: A lot of it has to do with laws, healthcare laws and crossing state lines or not being able to cross state lines and you’ve heard stories of even in major cities to where one’s trying to get help and they don’t have access to someone because their mental health professional that they know or the people that they know are completely booked. Derek: Yeah. Eric: Even in Charlotte I’ve heard of people dealing with this but it’s all over the place when it comes to a therapist shortage. So why is that or take that down the path that you want to take that down. Derek: Yeah, I mean, I think that the reality is, is that we have way more people seeking treatment and it started with COVID. People went through the kind of whole COVID shut down and then we had a lot of political divisiveness within the country and people struggle with that. And then I think that more recently, we’ve got these kinds of brutal acts of violence that are happening, pretty consistently these days. And so I think that people are realizing that they need support and they need help. And so a lot of what we’re seeing is people who haven’t been to therapy before, people who haven’t seen a counselor. In addition to that, I just think that it’s becoming more talked about and more recognized — when I was a kid, there weren’t many people who would acknowledge that they had a therapist but it’s different these days and you know, kind of across the board. There are still some communities that struggle with it, as far as wanting to seek counseling. But I think that for the most part of the mainstream Americans understand that this is something that can be helpful for them and that they can kind of get that extra support. And that’s what we see. We will have somebody come in once and they’ll say I’m just going to try this one time. And they’ll even say I doubt it’s going to help or something like that and then they kind of go through the process and then they see it’s really helpful and then it just becomes a part of the way, kind of one of the resources that they use in their life to get that extra support. The other part is, I think people who have been a support system are less capable of being support systems right now because they’re going through their own stuff. And so friends and family and people we would have leaned on in the past kind of to talk through those things, I don’t know that they have the capability of being able to support somebody else because they’re personally going through more things on their own. And so it’s very difficult for them to be a support system for somebody els...
