For the record with Kelsi Mayne

There’s something electric in the Windsor air, and if you grew up catching Detroit radio across the river, you already know why! This week on Strange Grooves, we sit down with rising singer-songwriter Kelsi Mayne, an artist whose sound is as boundary-pushing as the influences that shaped her. From Motown to country, hip hop to rock, Kelsi’s musical DNA is anything but one-note. With a voice that carries both grit and vulnerability, she opens up about how those early cross-border airwaves, along with icons like legendary program director Rosalie Tremblay, helped define her artistic path. But this conversation goes deeper than influences. We get into the heart of what drives Kelsi’s songwriting, real-life experience, emotional honesty, and the kind of storytelling that sticks with you long after the last note fades. She shares the personal story behind her track “Can’t Sleep,” and how heartbreak, growth, and mental health all find their way into her music. We also talk genre-bending, why she refuses to stay in one lane, and the importance of staying authentic in an industry that often pushes artists to do the opposite. Plus, Kelsi gives us a sneak peek at her upcoming single “Time Machine” and what fans can expect from her new album dropping soon. And of course, it wouldn’t be Strange Grooves without a trip into our Strange Solitary Sounds segment, where Kelsi locks in her desert island picks featuring records from Eric Church, Justin Timberlake and others! This episode is all about connection, between cities, sounds, and stories, and why the most powerful music always comes from a real place.🎧 Tune in, turn it up, and get to know Kelsi Mayne before she hits a stage near you.

Corey Bonnevie: Building Sound, Community, and Space at Monopolized Records

Some people don’t just participate in a music scene …they hold it together.Corey Bonnevie is one of those people. An OG Strange Grooves crew member, Corey is the owner and operator of Monopolized Records in Saint John, New Brunswick, and a true connector in the music industry. For years, he’s been quietly (and consistently) doing the work: supporting artists, building opportunities, curating sound, and showing up when it matters. Now, with a dedicated Monopolized Records studio space, Corey is expanding what’s possible for artists of all calibres. This space isn’t just about recording , it’s about accessibility, intention, and creating environments where artists can do their best work. Whether it’s how a show sounds in a room or how a performance is captured in the studio, Corey’s attention to detail is unmatched. His resume speaks for itself. Corey is such a force for connecting people through music. Long before Monopolized Records became what it is today, Corey was a cornerstone at Backstreet Records for over a decade, and that space for people like Cherise and I became extra special because he was in it. Corey helped countless people discover new music, dig deeper into what they already loved, and connect dots they didn’t even know existed. Beyond the shop floor, he was constantly sourcing the right people to help projects come together, quietly making introductions that turned ideas into reality. That consistency matters. Being a friendly, trusted face year after year builds community in ways algorithms never will. And projects like Quality Block Party to The Greville Tapes Music Sessions with Peter Rowan, Corey has been behind some truly special projects over the years. But what stands out most isn’t just what he’s done, honestly it’s how he does it. He’s thoughtful. He listens. He cares deeply about sound, people, and process. AND IT SHOWS!!!Corey is also incredibly humble about his talents …which is why we’re happy to say it out loud: he’s a phenomenal musician, a skilled producer, and an all-around solid human. Anyone who has worked with him knows his work ethic, his generosity, and his willingness to go above and beyond for the artists and collaborators he believes in.Another thing we love? His annual end-of-year holiday weekend party. Every year, Corey pulls together killer bands, local vendors, fun MCs, and a real sense of celebration and community. It’s not flashy for the sake of it , it’s thoughtful, well-curated, and rooted in genuine care for the scene. That kind of consistency is rare, and it matters. Go over to Instagram now and get your tickets. https://www.instagram.com/monopolizedrecords/?hl=enIn this episode, we sit down with Corey to talk about how the last few years have evolved, how the Monopolized Records studio came to life, and what’s on the horizon, including pressing more vinyl and working with even more bands. It’s an honest, refreshing conversation with someone who truly walks the walk.If you care about music, community, and people who do things the right way, this one’s for you.Want to hear an older episode with Corey? We got you. https://www.strangegrooves.com/episodes/volume-71-corey-bonnevie-monopolized-records

A Conversation with MuchMusic OG VJ Rick Campanelli

A Conversation with MuchMusic OG VJ Rick Campanelli At Strange Grooves, we love celebrating the iconic moments and people that shaped music culture—and when we had the chance to interview Rick Campanelli, one of MuchMusic’s original VJs, we were beyond excited!  We grew up watching Rick, learning from him and finding new music and resonating with artists in ways we could have never imagined.  We had the privilege of chatting with Rick about his legendary time at MuchMusic, his journey in the entertainment world, and what he's up to now. Here's a quick look back at his career and why this interview meant so much to us. For anyone who grew up in Canada during the '90s and early 2000s, Rick Campanelli (aka "Rick the Temp") is a household name. Joining MuchMusic in the mid-'90s, Rick became an instant fan favourite. His relaxed style, quick wit, and genuine love for music made him the perfect host for the channel. Over the years, Rick became a fixture on Much on Demand, hosted live events, and interviewed some of the biggest stars in music, from rock icons to emerging pop stars. Longhaulin' with Bubbles & The Shitrockers: Tales from the Trailer Park

It’s not every day that Strange Grooves gets to sit down with a Canadian icon like Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys, but guess what? We just did!  That’s right, #strangecrew. We packed up the little green machine and made the epic journey down to Halifax to interview Bubbles himself about his two new singles, his band's latest album, Longhauler, which dropped November 1st, and the much-anticipated movie coming out this December 6th, Standing on the Shoulders of Kitties. This interview is particularly special because we have been die-hard Trailer Park Boys fans for over two decades! From watching Bubbles, Ricky, and Julian's shenanigans on TV to rocking with them at Queens Of The Stone Age back in April to sitting down with Bubbles and chatting about his killer music career—it’s a full-circle moment. And trust us, it was every bit as DEEECENT as you'd imagine! Bubbles and The Shitrockers: Your New Favorite Band Bubbles has been rocking out for years, but The Shitrockers are here to blow your mind. We had the honour of talking with Bubbles about his latest single and the new album that just dropped, and let us tell you—it’s friggin’ incredible. From the first chord, it’s obvious this isn’t just some side project. Bubbles teamed up with some legendary musicians, including none other than Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones and Actor and Musician Billy Bob Thornton of The Boxmasters. Yeah, you read that right!  We dove deep into how those collaborations came to be, and it turns out Bubbles’ musical talent knows no bounds. You know you're doing something right when you’ve got rock royalty like Ronnie Wood and Billy Bob on your record! Bubbles also shows us the different versions of the vinyl album available. Record collectors and fans will want to take note!  If you haven’t already, you need to go crank up that new tune—seriously, stop what you’re doing and listen right now. We’ve had it on repeat since our interview. It’s the perfect mix of classic rock and Bubbles’ signature style. Friggin Awesome! Bubbles in the UK and What’s Next Bubbles also gave us the inside scoop on what’s been happening behind the scenes. He’s been spending a lot of time getting the album together and working with top-notch musicians. The energy of the British rock scene has clearly influenced the album, and you can feel it in every track. He’s got more on the horizon, too, but we’ll let you watch the interview for those juicy details. We couldn’t resist asking about his new movie, which will be released on December 6th. Bubbles shared some hilarious stories from the set and hints at what’s coming next for the Trailer Park Boys. You don’t want to miss this film—it will be a wild ride, only in theatres! We hope you love this exclusive interview as much as we loved making it happen. Check it out, get the inside story on the new album, and mark your calendars for December 6th when Bubbles and the boys hit the big screen again. In the meantime, stream the new single, grab the vinyl, and turn the volume up! Until next time, strange crew, keep it strange! This episode of Strange Grooves is brought to you by Locarius! On Tour with the Doobie Brothers: Our Chat with Photographer James Trocchio

In our latest episode of Strange Grooves, we had an incredible conversation with James Trocchio, the primary photographer on tour with the legendary Doobie Brothers. We first met James in October last year during the Doobies' sound check in Moncton, where we were lucky enough to get behind the scenes and meet some of the crew. We knew we had to stay in touch since that first encounter, and we’re thrilled to bring this interview to you finally! Listen: Groovin into 2024! Doobie Brothers Sound Check, Bob Dylan Massey Hall, Madonna, and a Phil Call-In! James shared with us what life is like on the road, not only with the Doobie Brothers but also with his previous work touring with artists like Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20, as well as rocking stages with Blink-182. His passion for photography was evident from the moment we started talking, and it was inspiring to hear how his love for capturing moments has grown over the years. From snapping iconic shots on tour to finding his unique perspective behind the lens, James gave us an inside look at what it takes to be a top-tier photographer in the music industry. One of the best parts of our chat was the invaluable advice James shared for aspiring photographers. His words were simple but powerful—just get out there and do it. Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect gear; ask people if you can take their picture, seize opportunities, and most importantly, don’t be a douche! It’s all about building genuine connections and staying humble, something James embodies fully. With the Doobie Brothers coming to our hometown of Saint John, New Brunswick, on October 16, 2024, we couldn’t be more excited to release this episode. James is just as pumped for the show, and we’re beyond stoked to have this fantastic conversation with him ahead of the big night. The Doobies are known for delivering hit after hit, and we can’t wait to see them rock the stage! Limited tickets are still available, so grab yours now, Strange Crew, and we’ll see you at the show. Breakfast and Music Adventures with Former MuchMusic VJ Michael Williams

Imagine having the absolute honour of sitting down for breakfast with one of the most iconic faces of MuchMusic, the channel that brought the magic of music into our living rooms for years. That's exactly what happened to us at Strange Grooves when we had the incredible opportunity to interview former MuchMusic VJ Michael Williams. We met Michael and other iconic VJs at the MuchMusic Documentary, “299 Queen Street West, screening at the Imperial Theatre in Saint Johh a few weeks back. Michael Williams was one of the core members at MuchMusic from 1984 to 1993. During his tenure, he became a household name, hosting iconic shows like "Soul in the City," "RapCity," "Electric Circus," and more. His charisma, passion for music, and down-to-earth demeanour endeared him to viewers across Canada. His infectious enthusiasm for music made him a beloved figure during MuchMusic's golden era; evidently, he still is today. Sean Menard’s documentary showcases that beyond a doubt now more than ever. When we sat down with Michael at the Delta for breakfast, it was more than just an interview; it was a meeting of kindred spirits. We shared our love for music and reminisced about the good old days when MuchMusic ruled the airwaves. We discovered that Michael's passion for music is as strong as ever, and he has stayed deeply connected to the industry. In the episode, we discussed Michael's experiences at MuchMusic, and he shared some incredible music recommendations that piqued our interest. But that's not all; Michael's journey post-MuchMusic was equally fascinating. He went on to run his own recording studio, Black Rose Studios in Toronto, a space where musical magic happens. His dedication to music as a VJ and studio owner shows his unwavering commitment to the industry. You're going to love this one, Strange Crew!
