75: Feast (w/ David Malcolm)
We can assure that this Episode, Episode 75, will arrive on time and to that end, we are joined by the director of Frightfest 2018 short film selection, Mannequins (also produced by Andy)... It's David Malcolm! His chosen film? Feast! A good while before he failed to set the world alight with Piranha 3DD, director John Gulager had a pretty good stab at a fun, gross, action-packed horror comedy with Feast! Boasting a cast that incudes Henry Rollins and Jason Mewes, Feast is a trashy and fun film that you MIGHT just enjoy! Let us know... The synopsis is as follows: Trapped in a remote tavern, a group of strangers must band together for survival. Outside the bar, a horde of ravenous, flesh-eating monsters are trying to break in and dine on the frightened humans inside. Please note that this episode contains strong language, conversations of an adult nature and EXTREMELY Scottish accents. 73: Nightmare Beach (Andy v Mitch)
Having rescheduled this week's guest in the light of his recent fatherhood, Andy and Mitch decided that the time was right for another head-to-head episode. So here we are, Episode 73! His chosen film? Nightmare Beach! Here we go! A film that may r may not be directed by Umberto Lenzi and certainly one of his better offerings if it is, Nightmare Beach is a fun, if often problematic slasher that has largely flown under the radar, but one that features good performances from John Saxon (Enter The Dragon, A Nightmare On Elm Street) and Michael Parks (From Dusk Til Dawn, Red State) It's also available on Amazon Prime... The synopsis is as follows: A criminal is executed, but returns on his motorcycle to carry out his revenge on the residents and tourists of a town in Florida. 71: Nothing But Trouble (w/ Brett & Drew Pierce)
Welcome one and all to this, EPISODE 71! This week, Andy and Mitch are delighted to be joined by the writing/directing due behind zombie comedy Deadheads and Frightfest 2019 selection The Wretched. It's sibling horror filmmakers... Drew & Brett Pierce! Their chosen film? Nothing But Trouble! Written, Directed, produced by and starring Dan Aykroyd in multiple roles, 1991's Nothing But Trouble (aka Valkenvania) marks Aykroyd's directorial debut and, sadly due to the reception of this effort, his last to date. Starring Chevy Chase, Demi Moore and the late, great John Candy, NBT is an anomaly. A singular vision that shouldn't exist, yet does. Is the world better for it? Let us know! The Synopsis is as follows: While attempting to seduce gorgeous lawyer Diane Lightson, wealthy gadabout Chris Thorne agrees to drive her to Atlantic City, N.J. But, when some reckless driving draws the attention of a deeply critical cop, they and the flamboyant "Brazillionaires" who tagged along end up in the court of a grotesque and vengeful judge, who has a special vendetta against the wealthy and erudite. 70: Resident Evil (w/ Michael Park)
Hello pals and welcome to EPISODE 70! It's a sad day, folks. This week's film has broken Mitch and as such, The Sunshine Kid's light is dimmed as he slips into actual fury. So, to head off accusations of nepotism, it's important to say that this week's guest has a connection to the show. He is the host of the excellent Scotland: A Scottish History Podcast, a podcast that Mitch scores and that Andy has provided voice work to several times. He is also the live AV guy for our live shows. It's the soft, silky voice wrapped in meat that is... Michael Park! His chosen film? Resident Evil! Directed by Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson and based on the bestselling Capcom game series, Resident Evil blasted onto our screens in 2002 with an industrial score by Marilyn Manson and Marco Beltrami, a nu-metal soundtrack featuring Slipknot and Coal Chamber and featuring very little of the games, this film wasn't the film anyone prayed it would be and the start of a 6-part franchise that no-one asked for. Good luck, Michael. The Synopsis is as follows: Based on the popular video game, Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez star as the leaders of a commando team who must break into "the hive," a vast underground genetics laboratory operated by the powerful Umbrella Corporation. There, a deadly virus has been unleashed, killing the lab's personnel and resurrecting them as the evil Un-dead. The team has just three hours to shut down the lab's supercomputer and close the facility before the virus threatens to overrun the Earth. Please note that this episode contains strong language, conversations of an adult nature and some EXTREMELY Scottish accents. 69: The Ghost and The Darkness (w/ Graham Hughes)
Firstly, I just want to say a huge apology for this week's episode. A premises adjacent to SVPC HQ decided to do some hammering mid recording. I hope it doesn't mar your listening experience too greatly. Anyway, onto EPISODE 69! The guest this week is coming fresh from the World Premiere of his latest feature film Death of A Vlogger at Frightfest... It's the truly delightful, Graham Hughes! His chosen film? The Ghost and The Darkness! Directed by Stephen Hopkins, the man behind Predator 2 and A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, TGATD marks a weather change in Hopkins' output, moving from straight horror, to old-timey adventure epic. The film stars Val Kilmer (rocking a terrible Irish accent), producer and actor Michael Douglas, Tom Wilkinson and Emily Mortimer and sees our heroes set against a duo of man-eating lions in Kenya. The Synopsis is as follows: Sir Robert Beaumont is behind schedule on a railroad in Africa. Enlisting noted engineer John Henry Patterson to right the ship, Beaumont expects results. Everything seems great until the crew discovers the mutilated corpse of the project's foreman, seemingly killed by a lion. After several more attacks, Patterson calls in famed hunter Charles Remington, who has finally met his match in the bloodthirsty lions. 68: Hellbent (w/ Nicholas Vince)
It's the first episode after Frightfest and, yes, Mitch and Andy are both back in the room for this, EPISODE 68! The guest this week is...well...he's horror royalty and one of the loveliest people in the genre. He's perhaps best known for his appearances in Clive Barker's Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II and Nightbreed. He also crops up in Stewart Sparke's Book of Monsters, Lawrie Brewster's anthology For We Are Many and Andy's short film, Remnant. As if that's not enough, he is also gearing up for his first one-man show, I Am Monsters... It's the Chatterer Cenobite himself, our good pal, Nicholas Vince! His chosen film? Hellbent! Tagged as the first gay slasher film, Hellbent is a largely forgotten curiosity from 2004. Which is a bit of a shame to be honest. Not without it's problems but there's still a lot to like. It's not the easiest film to get your mitts on but seek it out. The Synopsis is as follows: A group of gay friends is celebrating Halloween in West Hollywood, a neighborhood that's being prowled by a killer wearing a devil's mask. One of them, Eddie, who works for the police, brings the others through some woods to check out a recent murder scene. They ignore the mask-wearing killer, who follows the group to a club, where he starts decapitating them one at a time -- until the only ones left are Eddie and Jake, a potential love interest. Greetings from Frightfest! Well, Mitch is there. Andy is home editing. Our guest is ALSO there. And she is a returning guest. She is the director of the short films Call Girl, The Stylist, 42 Counts and the Frightfest 2019 short selection One Last Meal... It's Jill Gevargizian! (PS... Jill is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the feature length version of The Stylist. You could worse than throwing some coin at this one) The film? Anacondas: The Hunt For The Blood Orchid! How will this stack up against the first? Find out within! The Synopsis is as follows: Bill Johnson leads a group of scientists into the jungles of Borneo. When their boat goes over a waterfall, the scientists land right in the middle of the snakes' home. 66: There Are Monsters (Mitch v Andy)
Well, it had to happen again. The dreaded last minute cancellation brings the Frightfest streak to a close but it's another Mitch v Andy episode and still kind of Frightfest adjacent... It should've been Andy's turn but Mitch swooped in... His chosen film? There Are Monsters! A film that (outrageously) closed Frightfest Glasgow in 2015, They Are Monsters is ALMOST a found footage film, almost works and is almost decent. Almost. The Synopsis is as follows: There Are Monsters is a feature length horror based upon the apocalyptic premise that the world is being taken over - slowly, quietly and efficiently - by creatures that look exactly like us. The story follows a graduate-student film crew who, on a work-related road trip, discover evidence of these doppelgangers. Please note that this episode contains strong language, conversations of an adult nature and some EXTREMELY Scottish accents. 64: The Mothman Prophecies (w/ Josh Lobo)
Our continued mission to nab as many people with films at Frightfest, or appearing in films at Frightfest, or in any way involved with this year's festival shows no signs of abating as this week, for EPISODE 64, we are joined by the director of Frightfest 2019 selection I Trapped The Devil... It's Josh Lobo! His chosen film? The Mothman Prophecies! A true oddity here. The Mothman Prophecies is a baffling 2002 cryptid-hunt starring Laura Linney, Will Patton and a perpetually squinting Richard Gere. Is it good? Fuck knows. Get in touch with your thoughts. Preferably by phone. Oh and apologies to Richard Gere. We KNOW you didn't... you know... (wink) The Synopsis is as follows: Supernatural thriller focusing on a journalist whose wife experienced a strange moth-like vision immediately before she was killed in a car accident. 63: Ravenous (w/ Matt Mercer)
Another SLVS first this week as we are joined once again by a past guest. But wait! Havent you lads done that before? Yes! But this time, the guest reached out to us and pitched us an episode idea and it's one we couldn't pass up. So, we are joined once again by an old pal in the form of director of Dementia: Part 2, star of Beyond the Gates, The Minds Eye and Jill Gevargizian's upcoming One Last Meal, not to mention being the producer of Frightfest 2019 selection Bliss... It's Matt Mercer! His chosen film? Ravenous! Its Antonia Bird's criminally unloved and underseen cannibal flick which stars Guy Pearce, Jeremy Davies, features an all too brief appearance by David Arquette and also is notable for an absolutely scene-stealing and stellar performance from Robert Carlyle. Don't miss this one. The Synopsis is as follows: Upon receiving reports of missing persons at Fort Spencer, a remote Army outpost on the Western frontier, Capt. John Boyd investigates. After arriving at his new post, Boyd and his regiment aid a wounded frontiersman, F.W. Colquhoun, who recounts a horrifying tale of a wagon train murdered by its supposed guide -- a vicious U.S. Army colonel gone rogue. With Episode 62, we gleefully continue the stomp towards this years' Frightfest with another chat with a festival adjacent director... Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday! Yes! Jason is back in this, the ninth installment in the slasher franchise. Released in 1993 and helmed by 23 year old director Adam Marcus (Secret Santa), Jason Goes to Hell was the first in the series to step away from the familiar stalk-and-slash formula to something a little more supernatural. Does it succeed? That's up to you! The Synopsis is as follows: After being blown away by a team of FBI agents, Jason Voorhees needs to find a way to overcome certain death. When his bloodied remains are sent to the morgue, his heart, still intact, is able to hypnotize a coroner and take over his body. 56: Hellraiser: Bloodline (w/ Graham Skipper)
He's back! Yes, welcome to EPISODE 56 in which Andy and Mitch are delighted to be joined once again by the director of Shudder Exclusive Sequence Break, not to mention star of such films as Bliss, The Mind's Eye, Dementia Part II and Beyond the Gates and NOW the brains behind horror pop-up bar Rated R Speakeasy... it's Graham Skipper! His chosen film? Well it couldn't be further removed from his last appearance when he talked at length about Shyamalan's The Village... This time? Hellraiser: Bloodline! It's the fourth in the franchise and the difficult "Pinhead in Space" installment. Hellraiser: Bloodline is a time-hopping trip through the generations and, in honesty, possibly the last truly good entry in the franchise. It's also the beginning and end of the franchise, the last released in cinemas and the last with involvement from Clive Barker. It's also the first film we have done where the director had his name removed, so it's an Alan Smithee joint! Should you check it out? Absolutely! The Synopsis is as follows: Three generations of the same family deal with the consequences of unleashing the forces of hell. In 18th-century France, Paul L'Merchant works as a toymaker until he's coerced into creating a box that serves as a portal between hell and Earth. The box summons demonic Angelique and Pinhead, who -- 200 years later -- hunt down John Merchant. Then, centuries later, Phillip Merchant prepares for a final confrontation. Please note that this episode contains strong language, conversations of an adult nature and some EXTREMELY Scottish accents. 55: Fright Night (w/ Padraig Reynolds)
Oh dear. Another potentially divisive episode! It's Episode 55, in which Andy and Mitch are joined by the director of Rites of Spring, The Devil's Dolls, Open 24 Hours and the upcoming Dark Light... It's Padraig Reynolds! His chosen film? The 2011 remake of Fright Night! Yes! We are back in remake territory! Just when you'd got over the unpleasantness of Carrie, we are back with this, Craig Gillespie's remake of the beloved 1980's vampire flick. Is it any good? Is Colin Farrell in a vest better than Chris Sarandon in a sweater? Let's find out! The Synopsis is as follows: Charley is a high-school senior who's in with the "in" crowd and dating Amy, the most sought-after gal on campus. But trouble enters his world in the form of Jerry Dandridge, a charismatic new neighbor. After witnessing some unusual activity next door, Charley concludes that Jerry is a vampire. 54: Slugs (w/ Rebekah & David McKendry)
Here we go. It's finally here! Episode 54! It's huge for us, so we are absolutely delighted to do it in the company of such esteemed guests. SHE is one of the co-hosts of the Blumhouse podcast ShockWaves and the new Fangoria podcast Nightmare University while HE is one of the co-hosts of Dungeons & Dragons podcast Fear Initiative and they are BOTH co-directors of Christmas horror anthology, All The Creatures Were Stirring... it's Rebekah and David McKendry! Their chosen film? Slugs! It's finally here! The podcast has finally come full circle with this, Slugs, the film that began it all! Yes! Over a year ago now, Andy subjected Mitch to the film after several bottles of wine and a podcast was born. Now, this horror power couple have selected it for defence. Does it need defending? Perhaps. Should you watch it? 100%. Directed by JP Simon, who also brought us the wonderfully batshit Pieces, Slugs delivers insanity, gore and goo by the bucketload and somehow manages to become a film the belies its budget to become a riotous, urgently paced experience. The Synopsis is as follows: The townsfolk of a rural community are dying in strange and gruesome circumstances. Following the trail of horrifically mutilated cadavers, resident health inspector Mike Brady is on the case to piece together the mystery. He soon comes to a terrifying conclusion giant slugs are breeding in the sewers beneath the town, and they're making a meal of the locals! If Episode 52 is notable for 2 things, then this, Episode 53, is also notable for something new and also for something quite bold... First up, it's director and host of Blumhouse podcast, Fear Initiative... it's Josh Forbes! His chosen film? Well, it is of course, his own film, Contracted: Phase 2! 52: Meet The Feebles (w/ Aaron McCann & Dominic Pearce)
Episode 52 is notable for 2 things. 1: Dodgy sound, for which Andy apologises profusely, and 2: for being our first ever episode to feature not one but TWO guests, this time in the shapes of the directing duo behind the EXCELLENT Top Knot Detective... It's Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce! Their chosen film? Meet The Feebles! Way before Lord of The Rings and even before there was Braindead, yet after he left a Bad Taste in your mouth, director Peter Jackson again dabbled in the extremities of taste with his 1989 gross-out puppet feature, Meet The Feebles. Overlooked and having not aged too well in certain areas, it's one that's often forgotten. But should you check it out? The Synopsis is as follows: Cult director Peter Jackson creates a sort of sleazebag Muppet world in this story of everyday life behind the scenes of a third-rate vaudeville show. Manager Bletch, a walrus, cheats on his long-suffering hippo wife, negotiates cocaine deals and makes sex'n'snuff movies (featuring a cow and a cockroach) in the cellar. Among his 'stars' are a junkie frog and a sexually-insatiable rabbit with a potentially deadly secret. Please note that this episode contains strong language, conversations of an adult nature and EXTREMELY Scottish accents.
