Too much to do, too little of you- Alumni and friends life skills seminar
A group of almost fifty ANU Alumni and Friends attended the inaugural Open Day Life Skills Seminar on Saturday 28 August, presented by Carole Brown, Manager of Staff Career Development at ANU and National President and Fellow of the Career Development Association of Australia. In her seminar Too Much to Do, Too Little of You Carole spoke about many of the challenges we face today in managing our busy lives, and the often conflicting commitments we have. Her topic resonated clearly with those present. Many generously contributed to the discussion by raising questions, providing comment and sharing challenging experiences on a number of issues, particularly around the importance of developing stress management strategies to help us with the many, and often conflicting, life commitments we face.

16th Annual Lions Oratory Competition 2010
In this year's Sixteenth Annual Lions Oratory Competition, student representatives from the ANU Colleges competed for the perpetual Oratory Trophy and prizes totaling $3,000 in cash. The objective of the competition is to give an opportunity to students to master and excel in the art of oratory by reading widely on subjects dealing with human values.To create interest in the study of the lives of great women and men who, often at enormous personal sacrifice, realise outstanding achievements which generations to come will emulate. These are people, including saints and sages from the whole world, who through their outstanding contributions enhanced the quality of life of all humanity. To cultivate in students the need for the great human values of truth, righteousness, peace, love and non-violence - the core of all major religions. Housing Affordability: making ends meet in the ACT
The national crisis in affordable accommodation has hit low income earners hard in Canberra. Even where new public service graduates, students, young families and the unemployed have been able to find accommodation they often can't afford the rents on offer. Demand for public housing and student accommodation in the ACT far outstrips supply.What is being done by government about rental affordability, and what can we do better? Where is new investment needed?The Federal Minister for Housing, The Hon Tanya Plibersek addressed these questions at a special lunchtime lecture and Q&A hosted by the Australian Fabians and the ANU Students' Association

Career Flow: Identifying Life/Career Patterns Using a Circle of Strength
A world authority on Career Development, Professor Norm Amundson, who was recently visiting from the University of British Columbia, spoke to thirty keen ANU Alumni and Friends on the topic of Career Flow, in particular how to identify life / career patterns by using a circle of strength. The seminar was held on Monday 12 April from 6pm - 7pm at University House, ANU.

2010 University Commencement Address
Former Prime Minister, The Hon Bob Hawke AC, delivered the inaugural ANU Commencement Address to mark the beginning of the 2010 academic year at The Australian National University on Friday 19 February. This will be the first year that the University will welcome new students to campus with an annual address by an Australian who has made a contribution to the development of ANU as a university of national and international significance. ANU Chancellor, Professor Gareth Evans AO QC, welcomed new students to the University and introduced Mr Hawke.

The 14th Annual Lions Oratory Competition saw selected ANU students from across the University present eight minute orations to convince the judges and the audience that they deserved to win the ANU Lions Oratory Trophy and prizes totaling $3,000 in cash. The event was hoseted by Esther Sainsbury, last years winner of the 2007 Lions Oratory Competition and judged by an esteemed panel of public-speaking experts. The oratory saw speakers addressing a range of subjects incorporating the Lions' messages of truth, righteousness, peace, love and non-violence - the core values of all major religions.Prizes included: First prize - The ManikKam Reddy Award: $1,500Second prize: $800Third prize: $500Donated by the Lions Club of Canberra Woden People's Choice Award: $400Donated by the Australian National University and the Lions Club of Canberra Woden

2007 Lions Oratory Competition
The 13th Annual Lions Oratory Competition saw selected ANU students from across the University present eight-minute orations and compete for a part of the $2,000 in prize money donated by Lions.
