056: Managing Care for Tutu When You're Far Away

Managing care for an aging loved one from thousands of miles away is one of the hardest things a family can face — and it's exactly what today's guest, Petra Weggel, lived through firsthand. Petra joins Meg to share how she coordinated care for both of her parents in Germany while living on Maui, navigating a 12-hour time difference, language barriers, and a health care system very different from our own. Her experience inspired her to write The Elder Care Playbook: How to Organize Care for Your Aging Loved One. Petra walks through the practical systems she built — digitizing records, securing power of attorney, arranging in-home nursing, adult daycare, and trusted local volunteers — all from across the world. Her biggest takeaway? The best time to prepare is before you need to. In this episode, you will hear: How do you manage elder care from over 7,000 miles away? What systems and tools help you stay organized when caring for aging parents remotely? Why is securing a power of attorney one of the most critical steps in elder care planning? What roles can volunteers and local community organizations play in supporting your loved one? How can adult daycare benefit both the aging parent and the caregiver at home? What does the process of researching and waitlisting for nursing facilities actually look like? Why is preparing early the single most important thing families can do? Navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. In this episode, Meg welcomes Corey Dobashi, a Medicare broker and retirement specialist with Milestone Wealth Management based on Kauai, to break down everything you need to know before your 65th birthday. Corey walks through the three main Medicare options — original Medicare, supplemental plans, and Medicare Advantage — and explains how to choose the right coverage based on your health history, medications, and budget. Corey brings over a decade of experience helping kupuna across Hawaii and the mainland navigate their retirement healthcare decisions. He also touches on the gaps Medicare doesn't cover, including long-term care, and why working with a broker early can prevent costly, permanent penalties. The bottom line? Love your broker — and start the conversation before you need to. In this episode, you will hear: What is the difference between Medicare Part A and Part B — and why does it matter? The three Medicare plan options and how to choose the right one for your needs Why Medicare Advantage plans are growing in popularity in Hawaii How your current medications should influence your Medicare plan selection What happens if you don't enroll in Medicare Part B or a drug plan on time Why long-term care isn't covered by Medicare — and what to do about it The value of building a strong relationship with your Medicare broker before you need one Resources from this Episode Corey's Website - https://www.milestonewealthhi.com/ Corey's Contact Number - 808-778-0377 Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. For property owners, investors, and families helping Tutu or their aging relatives manage real estate, this episode offers clarity, caution, and practical guidance about protecting one of your most valuable assets. In this episode, you will hear: What is a 1031 exchange, and how does it defer capital gains taxes? What is a reverse 1031 exchange, and when might it be useful? 051: Why Tutu Needs to Get Her Cancer Screenings, Even When She Doesn't Feel Like It

Cancer screenings save lives, but too many people delay or avoid them altogether, especially in Hawaii!. In this episode, Meg sits down with Angel Nelson, Tumor Registry Supervisor at Maui Memorial Medical Center, to talk about why early detection matters, what happens behind the scenes with cancer data, and what she's seeing firsthand in our Maui community. Angel explains how tumor registry data supports cancer research nationwide, identifies environmental and geographic trends, and helps shape future treatments. Drawing on her background in oncology and patient care, she also shares which screenings are most often declined, common early warning signs families may overlook, and how caregivers can encourage loved ones to get checked. The takeaway is simple and powerful: screenings aren't scary, early detection works, and taking action now can change everything. In this episode, you will hear: What does a tumor registry actually do, and why does that data matter for cancer research? How are cancer cases on Maui tracked and shared nationally? Why do so many seniors delay or refuse routine cancer screenings? How does that compare with the mainland? What early warning signs of cancer are often mistaken for normal aging? How can caregivers encourage reluctant loved ones to get screened? Which cancers are most common in Hawaii and why does early detection matter? 044: REPLAY: Chelsea Fernandez and the Importance of Connection for Maui Veterans

Aloha and welcome back to Taking Care of Tutu. Today is Veteran's Day, and in recognition of that, we're replaying one of our favorite episodes — a conversation with Chelsea Fernandez, a U.S. Army veteran who's dedicated herself to supporting other veterans right here in Hawai'I, especially younger veterans from more recent conflicts who were not aware of the resources available to them through the VA. She's also the founder of Na Koa Kahiko Wahine, a women's veteran's group that she founded 11 years ago. She does a massive amount of volunteering, and those efforts are focused on ensuring veterans have a sense of community and camaraderie. We reached back out to Chelsea, and she asked us to remind everyone that today at the Makawao Veteran's Cemetery there will be a ceremony from 8:30-10 a.m. and at Kalama Park Pavillion in Kihei, they are hosting a picnic from 11 am to 3pm. We added those to the show notes, below. Let's listen in again. This week on the Taking Care of Tutu Podcast, we are delighted to welcome Chelsea Fernandez, U.S. Army Veteran and tireless volunteer for veterans.  Born on the Big Island, Chelsea moved to Maui after she returned from Iraq in 2005. Recognizing that many younger veterans—especially those from recent conflicts—weren't aware of the resources available to them through the VA and other community organizations, Chelsea felt it was crucial to bridge this gap and provide support to veterans returning home. Chelsea noted that younger veterans often don't identify as veterans because they don't fit the traditional image of older veterans. She wanted to create a space where younger veterans could feel understood and supported by their peers. Chelsea founded Na Koa Kahiko Wahine, a women's veterans group that celebrates its 10th year this year. The organization brings together women from various military eras, focusing on shared experiences and challenges that women face both in the military and when transitioning back to civilian life. The group offers a sense of camaraderie and support to women veterans, providing opportunities to connect and share experiences. Chelsea serves as president of the Maui County Veterans Council, which helps organize events to honor Veterans Day and Memorial Day and also supports other veteran organizations. She works with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and has served on the Governor's Advisory Board for the Office of Veterans Services. Her motivation stems from her grandfather's service in the Korean War. Earlier this year, Chelsea played a pivotal role in bringing us the Wall That Heals, in which a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was brought to the Big Island and Maui. She tells us all about how they got the wall here and how it was viewed by 13,000 people! Chelsea offers multiple avenues for veterans to connect with support groups, including through the Maui County Veterans email, the Office of Veteran Services, and the Student Veterans Lounge at the University of Hawaii Maui College. She encourages veterans to make the most of opportunities to meet others who share similar experiences. This sense of community and camaraderie is crucial, even if veterans do not need specific services right away. In this episode, you will hear:  Why don't some younger veterans seek out support? What is Na Koa Kahiko Wahine?  What is the role of the Maui Veterans Council, the VFW, and the Governor's Advisory Board in assisting veterans? What is the Wall That Heals, and how were we so lucky to get it to Maui? What are some ways for veterans to seek out support? 043: A Medicaid Detective Story: Unravelling a 23-Year-Old Deed Mistake

In this deeply personal episode, Meg sits down with Heritage Hall (name changed for privacy), a client who bravely agreed to share her family's story—an anonymous conversation from a small island community about love, caregiving, and a legal mystery decades in the making. When a 98-year-old family matriarch needed 24-hour care, her family faced the daunting $15,000-a-month cost of a nursing home and turned to Medicaid for help. But the application was denied because the State said she owned hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets—money the family knew didn't exist. What followed was a "Medicaid detective story." Meg and her team uncovered an error made 23 years earlier—a simple but devastating mistake in two property deeds that caused the state to believe the family member still owned two homes. Together, they worked to trace the paperwork, uncover the truth, and set her on a path for Medicaid Eligibility. In this episode, you will hear: How can families navigate the financial realities of elder care, especially with unexpected Medicaid challenges? What are the potential legal and clerical errors that could impact Medicaid eligibility? How did a 2002 clerical error in property deeds lead to a Medicaid denial? What role does community support play in overcoming elder care hurdles? How can families correct past legal mistakes to reapply for Medicaid successfully? 029: Lahaina is Not for Sale: The Lahaina Community Land Trust

Meg Obenauf speaks with Autumn Ness, Executive Director of the Lahaina Community Land Trust, about what it takes to rebuild homes, community, culture, and long-term belonging after disaster. Listeners will learn the origin story of the Lahaina Community Land Trust after the Lahaina wildfire, how the Land Trust model keeps housing affordable in perpetuity, and the Land Trust's innovative housing allocation process that prioritizes long-time residents. Key Takeaways Permanent Affordability + Equity: Buyers pay less than market-rate mortgage payments, build equity, and avoid skyrocketing rents — all while homes remain affordable for future buyers. Simple, Fair Resale: Homes appreciate 1.5% annually. When owners sell, they pay off their mortgage and keep their earned equity. The next buyer is selected from a waitlist. No Commissions, No Speculation: The CLT facilitates buyer-seller matching, bypassing real estate agents and eliminating profit-driven flipping. Post-Fire Relief Through Equity Partnerships: Instead of buying out struggling fire survivors, the Land Trust invests in keeping them home, preserving their pre-fire equity, and topping off insurance shortfalls so they can rebuild. Voluntary, Fair Terms: Families agree to resale restrictions and residency requirements in exchange for significant financial support. Locally Rooted Leadership: CLT board members must be born and raised in Lahaina with generational ties and a record of community service. Their work is guided by cultural advisors from across Lahaina's diverse populations. Lahaina Is Not for Sale — A Final Word from Autumn Ness As the conversation closes, Autumn shares one of the most sobering takeaways: "We haven't found a single post-disaster community that isn't a cautionary tale of near-total erasure — including the families." But Lahaina is determined to be the exception. Thanks to growing partnerships — with Habitat for Humanity, Hawaiʻi Community Lending, long-term recovery groups, and others — the Lahaina Community Land Trust doesn't stand alone. Together, they're not just rebuilding homes, but ensuring the right to remain home for generations to come. Before You Sell… Autumn's final message is direct and urgent: "If you or someone you know in Lahaina is thinking about selling, call us first." Many residents are exhausted and overwhelmed. But distress-driven sales can be prevented — and the Lahaina Community Land Trust can help.    How to Get Involved Interested in joining the waitlist or learning more? 014: Pastor Bill Staton Advocates for Maui Vets

This week we welcome Pastor Bill Staton, a retired veteran and veterans' services counselor on Maui, to the podcast. Originally, Bill's job was helping veterans navigate the complex systems of veterans' financial benefits. However, Bill quickly realized the need to advocate for the holistic needs of veterans returning from conflicts and their families.  Bill talks about challenges faced by veterans, including an ingrained military culture of not complaining, which can make it difficult for many veterans to ask for help. We discuss how the perseverance of the Nisei veterans and their families reshaped perceptions of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Bill addresses the ongoing reluctance among Gulf War veterans to seek support.  Bill breaks down the various benefits available to our veterans, including the important question of where to begin. We cover medical care through the Community-Based Outpatient Clinic, long term care, burial services, support groups, and education under the GI Bill.  Pastor Bill Staton's candid observations reflect a deep commitment to advocate on behalf of our veterans. In this episode, you will hear: Evolution of veteran services from financial applications to holistic support Nisei veterans' impact on PTSD perception and compensation Challenges Gulf War veterans face in seeking PTSD support Overview of veteran benefits, including medical care, compensation, burial, long term care Importance of tailored support for National Guard and Reserve members Note: Bill observed in the interview that when he was working, Hale Makua Health Services did not have a contract with the VA due to a difference in pharmacy packaging. We reached out to Hale Makua and were happy to learn that they do now have a contract with the VA, and residents are able to fill prescriptions with the VA if they choose. What is the legal process to petition for a Conservatorship and Guardianship? What are the duties of a court-appointed Guardian or Conservator?
