This week on Taking Stock, we're speaking at length with John Wooten about his suggestions and work to see regulators update and modernize their approach to transfer agents. Taking Stock Episode 51 - U.S. Treasury Digital Assets Study
Today on Taking Stock we'll follow up on last weeks discussion with an examination of the Treasury Department's study on Digital Assets, which also was released in October 2024. The Treasury takes a more direct approach reviewing how tokenization of treasuries could impact the market currently developing in the crypto space including effects on stablecoins, bitcoin, memecoins, and coins yet to come. It is a data driven and conservative take which is worth the read if you're interested to see how the coming years may integrate emergent blockchain technology. Make sure to check out some of the excellent included graphics and charts to follow along, as we'll praise heavily the diligence displayed by this team even if dismayed by the way in which the Treasury department is recommending to utlize distributed ledgers. - Twitter/X Link: https://x.com/i/spaces/1OdJrXAEbezKX - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.whydrs.org - Links and Resources: U.S. Treasury Digital Asset Study: https://home.treasury.gov/system/files/221/CombinedChargesforArchivesQ42024.pdf#page=107 Conversation on Github referenced in the episode: https://github.com/JFWooten4/WhyDRS-docs/issues/6 - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music

Taking Stock Episode 50 - DTCCs Digital Assets Study
Today on Taking Stock we'll be discussing the recent DTCC study on Digital Assets effects on Collateral Management. Per @john.xlm , DTCC Digital Assets is their Securrency acquisition. One of the primary benefits to digital assets is how it can enable direct custodial control for participants and transparency for onlookers - DTCC as umbrella for the centralized security depository for US markets will have an interesting sponsored take on this tech. The report was authored by Nadine Chakar, an industry veteran who is currently the Global Head of DTCC Digital Assets. Her prior roles included acting as Securrency CEO, an RWA tokenization firm, before they were acquired by DTCC and as the head of State Street Digital, which was a focused division of the State Street asset management firm. - Twitter/X Link: https://x.com/i/spaces/1YqJDkweNaVGV - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.whydrs.org - Links and Resources: Transforming Collateral Management with Digital Assets Case Study: https://www.dtcc.com/-/media/WhitePapers/Transforming-Collateral-Management-With-Digital-Assets-JSCC.pdf DTCC Press Release about Securrency acquisition: https://www.dtcc.com/news/2023/october/19/dtcc-signs-definitive-agreement-to-acquire-securrency-inc DTCC Comments on Securrency acquisition: https://www.dtcc.com/news/2023/december/11/dtcc-comments-on-acquisition-of-securrency Testimony of Nadine Chakar: https://docs.house.gov/meetings/BA/BA21/20240605/117392/HHRG-118-BA21-Wstate-ChakarN-20240605.pdf - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music

Taking Stock Episode 31 - DAOs and Grassroots Funding with Miles from FanSociety
This week, Bibic and John sat down with Miles Patterson from FanSociety. Miles is developing a project which attempts to connect music artists with their fans directly, rather than involving other middlemen as is so common today. FanSociety is both a crowdfunding initiative which operates transparently and a decentralized infrastructure which can be used to discover and share new artists. A structure in which artist health and sustainability is in mind from the start, rather than record producers or streaming services, is an excellent application of public blockchain technology and we’re excited to see independent creators succeed. - Twitter/X Link: https://x.com/Bibic_Jr/status/1798444631694164176 - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.drsgme.org and https://www.whydrs.org - Links and Resources: FanSociety https://www.fansociety.xyz/ - FanSociety’s White Paper https://rocky-moon-589.notion.site/FanSociety-Fan-Funding-the-Future-ebdcde35fbad483c9870c89360390084 - Who Gets Paid for a Stream? https://www.billboard.com/pro/music-streaming-royalty-payments-explained-song-profits/ - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music

Taking Stock Episode 28 - Future of WhyDRS and the Ownership Advocacy Mission
This week on Taking Stock, Chives was joined by John Wooten and together they welcomed open commentary from the community as they discussed the broader aims of WhyDRS and how best to actuate them. The intention to register as a non-profit 501c3 was discussed for the first time, and how that would help realize more potential for ownership advocacy to advance itself. Investors and issuers are self interested to seek a higher ratio of ownership, and the differences between communities are imagined walls. So much more can be accomplished through collective action and drive towards the development of a new market structure, of investors and for investors. It is a vision that regards the financial empowerment of individuals not as a means to generate profit but as an end in itself. This perspective is inspired by the belief that true progress in financial democratization can only be achieved when the primary motive is the collective welfare of the community rather than individual or corporate gain. This was just the first time broaching this topic, and we’re looking forward to bringing more people and more investor groups into the conversation. - Twitter/X Link: https://twitter.com/i/spaces/1PlKQDymLakxE - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.drsgme.org and https://www.whydrs.org - Links and Resources: Future of WhyDRS https://6d54ae39-63b7-4a30-8aee-9c47d31bcdfc.usrfiles.com/ugd/6d54ae_e9a4d7cd8f964207a420f6d91618ec6e.pdf - On Block Transfer: Main site https://www.blocktransfer.com/ Yellow Paper https://blocktransfer.com/.well-known/yellowpaper.pdf White Paper https://blocktransfer.com/.well-known/whitepaper.pdf - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music

Taking Stock Episode 27 - Issuer Recognition of Naked Short Selling
This week on Taking Stock, Chives and 6days discussed some of the developing narratives in the ownership space. Billionaire attention has started to levy more towards short selling and market fairness, and specifically, Truth Social’s CEO has been bringing attention to the potential market abuse from market makers and encouraging shareholders to move shares to the transfer agent to hold in direct registration. At time of recording, they had released an 8K drawing attention to an update to their FAQ asking shareholders concerned with short selling to hold shares through the transfer agent. A few days later after this recording, they updated the FAQ page again to include the phrase DRS as well. - Twitter/X Link: https://twitter.com/i/spaces/1PlKQDrrXbMxE - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.drsgme.org and https://www.whydrs.org - Links and Resources: Articles about Elon Musk on abusive short selling https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-short-seller-height-joke-shareholder-trial-2023-1 https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-spacex-ceo-elon-musk-short-selling-should-be-illegal-2019-12-1028733903 https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-sells-red-satin-tesla-short-shorts-2020-7 - Patrick Byrne's response to short sellers https://finance.yahoo.com/news/patrick-byrne-final-act-overstock-133613713.html - Truth Social CEO on illegal short selling https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/truth-social-owner-trump-media-asks-congress-to-investigate-troubling-market-manipulation-claims/ar-AA1nAhp4 - Thread on Truth Social vs Citadel Securities https://twitter.com/sboho/status/1781745474153693363 - TMTG Investor Relations https://ir.tmtgcorp.com/ - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music

This week on Taking Stock, Chives was joined by 6days1week to talk in more detail about the community-gathered questions sent over to Computershare. A few days before the time of recording, the WhyDRS team was asked by Paul Conn to narrow the questions down. Chives and 6days discuss six of the questions that they found most important, and some of the possible answers to expect. Taking Stock Episode 25 - Annual Filing Requirements, and What's a Record Holder?
This week on Taking Stock, Chives was joined by Lawson and 6days to discuss the idea of a record holder and what sort of requirements existed for annual reports such as the 10K. This topic came up because GameStop’s 2023 10K had recently released and the record holder information was missing. We reviewed the language and predicted we’d have to see an amendment within about 40 days – but as luck would have it, later in the evening after recording, the amendment was filed. Taking Stock Episode 24 - Tracking Direct Plan Purchases through Computershare
This week on Taking Stock, Chives was joined by 6days1week to talk about his efforts to track direct plan purchases made through Computershare. Investors have the option to buy directly through the transfer agent and can even set up recurring automatic buys to continue accumulating shares of companies they support. These purchases are executed in bulk at the market on a predictable schedule, a framework which could result in less than ideal outcomes for investors in terms of shares received per dollar invested. 6Days prepared some screenshots and graphs to assist in the conversation which are linked in the notes below. - Twitter/X Link: https://twitter.com/i/spaces/1jMKgmZMVXjJL - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.drsgme.org and https://www.whydrs.org - Links and Resources: AMC Plan Purchase Transaction Numbers https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GIk2UcrXYAATWd7?format=jpg&name=900x900 - GME Plan Purchase Transaction Numbers https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GIk2UanXsAAjiVk?format=jpg&name=900x900 - % Fees for Computershare Purchases https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GIk2UaDXIAAL11v?format=jpg&name=medium - Example Plan Summary Page https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GIk2UZVWoAAjz_i?format=jpg&name=large - Bank Statement showing Transaction Number Information https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GIk2WNUW8AEvFRY?format=jpg&name=900x900 - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music

Taking Stock Episode 22 - Open Community Discussion Pt 2
This week on Taking Stock we continue the discussion from last week where community members joined and brought up any subject they liked. In this half, crypto and other scarce assets were discussed. John Wooten joined us to talk about his appearance at a recent crypto panel on the subject of investor protections, Chives shared his experience on early crypto lending platforms prior to regulatory oversight, and the group discussed how we can take advantage of new technology while also taking advantage of the century of regulation which can provide needed assistance to retail investors in a market of lopsided influence. TornadoCash and government regulation of open source technologies was also discussed, along with the for and against cases, and lastly John Wooten shared his perspective on the importance of having a central body which would be able to audit trading activity on a blockchain network to add to the discussion around financial regulations. - Twitter/X Link: https://twitter.com/i/spaces/1OyKAWvnBkLJb - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.drsgme.org and https://www.whydrs.org - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music

This week on Taking Stock, Chives and Bibic continue looking back in time, but this week it's to The Great Paperwork Crisis of 1968, which led to the rationalization and birth of The Depository Trust (AKA The DTC). This week on Taking Stock, Chives and Bibic follow up from last week’s SEC bulletin breakdown with a handy diagram that visualises the 3 different forms of digital shareholdings, and the various forms of ownership associated with them. It’s important to learn what distinguishes each form of holdings as well as each form of ownership from each other. This week on Taking Stock, we continued the conversation with Jack where we left off last week - how the separation of voting and economic rights can be realized by actors intentionally using market mechanics, and what downstream effects that can have on retail investors - including the tax implications on regular people from the largest participants in the market. - Itinerary: https://imgur.com/bwKx3OD - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.drsgme.org and https://www.whydrs.org - Links and Resources: jackofspades123 Slideshow on Failures to Deliver https://imgur.com/a/60QROdr - Babel Source Congressional Report Dec 06 1991 https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015087623214&view=1up&seq=1249&skin=2021 - FINRA Source Link https://www.finra.org/rules-guidance/notices/93-53 - Actual Law https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/17/240.15c3-3 - Leslie Boni Source https://vdocument.in/leslie-boni.html - Market To Market Accounting Investopedia https://www.investopedia.com/terms/m/marktomarket.asp - DTCC on Settlement" https://www.dtcc.com/-/media/Files/Downloads/legal/service-guides/Settlement.pdf - Asimar & Trimbath Source https://www.aimspress.com/article/id/6360d16eba35de77c348c2c4 - Richard L Gregg Aged Treasury Fails Source https://www.treasurydirect.gov/laws-and-regulations/gsa/regulatory-cites/cite-11-22-1989-2/#:~:text=A%20fail%20becomes%20aged%20when,of%20time%20beyond%20settlement%20date - Taxes: Wash Sale Source https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p550.pdf - Shorting Against The Box Investopedia https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/sellagainstthebox.asp#:~:text=For%20example%2C%20if%20you%20own,the%20short%20position%20in%20another - Shorting Against The Box Law Source https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26/1259 - Shorting Against The Box Law Source https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26/1259 - Empty Voting & Taxes Source https://ccl.yale.edu/sites/default/files/files/PM-6-Bus-Law-Hu-Black.pdf - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music

Taking Stock Episode 7 - Talking with Bill Pulte and Kevin Malone
This week on Taking Stock, hosts Lawson, Chives and Bibic were joined by Bill Pulte and Kevin Mallone in order to discuss a variety of pressing community topics. Bill and Kevin are two of the larger figures in our investing advocacy community and they shared their perspectives on dealing with online criticism, with seeking truth, with evaluating the SEC, and on the details of the Plan and Book designation distinctions. There was a lot of passion and a lot of wisdom on display here. It’s always great being able to have these discussions. - Itinerary: https://imgur.com/3KB9wRd - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.drsgme.org and https://www.whydrs.org - Links and Resources: Computershared.net is back! https://www.computershared.net/ - Kevin Malone’s new Charity https://twitter.com/malone_wealth/status/1704602400324190449 - SEC Bulletin - Get the Facts about Holding Securities https://www.sec.gov/about/reports-publications/investor-publications/holding-your-securities-get-the-facts - Computershare update on plan shares https://youtube.com/watch?v=9Ii-5tgvZKk&t=89s - With plan, investors names are in a subclass https://youtu.be/bo427AW0anw?t=731 - DirectStock brochure https://cda.computershare.com/Content/7bfc0b25-4836-40a4-918c-9a86d658d798 - Pulte’s Tweet about DRS Friction https://x.com/pulte/status/1661155862335946753 - GME 2023 Stockholder List Data https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/pictrs/image/d5f98246-3bf2-40c8-b96e-2c15c20aedb9.png - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music

Taking Stock Episode 6 - The UK Proposal Trying To End Direct Registration
This week on Taking Stock, Chives and Bibic dove into the recently announced UK Taskforce’s action proposal which seeks to explore feasible routes to full dematerialization of share certificates. Not all solutions are made equal, and the proposal’s favorite solution involves forcing investors to hold through a centralized depository’s nominee rather than holding for themselves and in their own name. We had a great guest speaker Bellweirboy who joined the call in order to help make sure listeners understood the current impact of the proposal as written, and encouraged collective action through parliament and direct democracy for all UK natives. For everyone else, online comments can be submitted until September 25th 2023. - Itinerary: https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/post/201103 - Join the Community: Join us on Discord - https://mee6.xyz/en/i/vYJSX1ghMl Join us on Lemmy - https://lemmy.whynotdrs.org/ Visit https://www.drsgme.org and https://www.whydrs.org - Links and Resources: The UK’s Digitization Taskforce https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/digitisation-taskforce - Full Report from the Taskforce https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1168398/digitisation_report.pdf - Computershare’s response to the Report https://content-assets.computershare.com/eh96rkuu9740/b6d2096ed675446da100e6b5ccbcbc92/1078b3957fdbedbdffbd67ee9278a9c3/SCRR-Digitisation-of-Shareholdings-Discussion-Paper.pdf - Shareholder Activism Website and Email Template https://www.shareholder-feedback.com/en/home/ - BibicJr’s post, pinned on GMEJungle https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/16de7gy/moass_must_be_close_the_uk_government_are/ - Kibblepigeon’s post on Superstonk https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/16de7gy/moass_must_be_close_the_uk_government_are/ - Other example letters https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/16gi9fk/a_letter_to_uks_hm_treasury_from_a_concerned/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/16fwpb0/uk_ape_speaking_up_for_investorspotentially/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Superstonk/comments/16bm942/i_do_not_approve_of_you_removing_my_rights/ - SEC Bulletin - Get the Facts about Holding Securities https://www.sec.gov/about/reports-publications/investor-publications/holding-your-securities-get-the-facts - FINRA Bulletin - Know the Facts about Direct Registered Shares https://www.finra.org/investors/insights/know-the-facts-direct-registered-shares - Special Thanks to: Craiyon.com for help with the logo design Wooch for the intro & outro music
