Episode 15: How to Take the "Ick" Out of Self-Promotion with Steph Crowder
In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate is joined by sales and strategy coach Steph Crowder for a conversation about entrepreneurship, selling, courage, and building a business that actually supports the life you want to live. Steph is the host of the Courage and Clarity podcast, a former Director of Sales Training at Groupon, and the founder of Sold Out Group Programs, where she helps entrepreneurs start, sell out, and scale group programs with more courage, clarity, and confidence. In this conversation, Kate and Steph talk about Steph's path from corporate sales to online business, the intentional choices that helped her design a career around her life, and why so many creative, service-driven people feel uncomfortable with selling. They also explore what it means to step away from something that looks successful from the outside, why scaling a business can bring up unexpected fear, and how Steph rebuilt her work in a way that supports her life, her family, and her ambition. Together, they discuss: Why sales feels uncomfortable for so many creatives and entrepreneurs How to reframe selling as service rather than self-promotion What "consultative selling" really means Why life design matters when building a business Steph's experience leaving Groupon and later stepping away from her own business The "scaling scaries" and what it takes to grow sustainably How to identify money-making activities in your business Why boundaries with your phone and attention matter more than we think What it means to thrive while still wanting to grow If you have something valuable to offer but struggle to share it, or if you are trying to build work that supports your life instead of consuming it, this conversation will give you a fresh perspective on sales, courage, and sustainable success. Episode 114: If You're Already Enough, Why Grow?
There's a conversation happening everywhere right now: "You're already enough." "You don't need to improve." "You don't need to be better." And while all of that is true… it's also incomplete. Because most high-achieving, thoughtful people don't actually want to stay exactly where they are. They want to grow, expand, and explore what they're capable of. So what does that mean? If you're already enough, why grow? And if you want to grow, does that mean you think you're not enough? In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate explores the tension between self-acceptance and ambition, and how to understand what's actually driving your desire for more. She unpacks: The difference between growth as self-expression vs self-fixing Why ambition can shift from a behavior into an identity The psychological pull of mastery and self-determination The "hedonic treadmill" and why achievement rarely feels the way we expect The role of grief in growth and life transitions How to tell the difference between aligned ambition, rest, and avoidance Kate also shares four powerful questions to help you evaluate what's driving you right now. Because the goal isn't to eliminate ambition. And it's not to constantly chase it. It's to understand where it's coming from—and respond accordingly. And if you want support putting this into action: 👉 Q2 Strategy Sessions are now open These are 90-minute, one-on-one sessions where we take everything on your plate and turn it into a focused, realistic plan for the next 90 days. But the best speakers make the audience feel like they are being brought into something. In this week's episode of Tales from The Lane, I'm joined by speech coach Mike Pacchione for a conversation about speaking, storytelling, presence, and why your audience is probably rooting for you more than you think. We talk about: how to tell better stories why details make a story land what speakers often get wrong how to calm yourself down in the moment and how to connect with an audience instead of performing at them Mike also has a free resource for listeners: How to Win the Audience Over in 13 Seconds. Episode 112: Become a Planning Ninja: How to Prioritize Your Week When Everything is Important
What do you do when your to-do list is full of important things, but none of them are urgent? That is one of the most disorienting places to be. There is no immediate deadline forcing your hand, no outside pressure telling you what to do first, and no obvious starting point. So even smart, capable, motivated people can end up stalled, spinning, or avoiding the work altogether. In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate shares three practical ways to move through important, non-urgent work without wasting energy overthinking every next step. She explores: Why non-urgent work can feel harder to start than urgent work How to group tasks into larger buckets so decision-making becomes easier The "deli counter" method for moving through a list when deciding is slowing you down The powerful question that helps you identify the task that will make everything else easier, faster, or unnecessary How to break big, intimidating projects into smaller steps that feel approachable Why balancing past, present, and future work is essential for long-term momentum If you have ever looked at your list and thought, "I know this all matters, but where do I even begin?" this episode will give you a practical way forward. Because progress is rarely about doing everything at once. It is about knowing where to start, and following through. And if you want support putting this into action: 👉 Q2 Strategy Sessions are now open These are 90-minute, one-on-one sessions where we take everything on your plate and turn it into a focused, realistic plan for the next 90 days. Episode 111: The Real Secret to a Morning Routine That Sticks, with Amy Landino
What if the problem isn't that you need a better morning routine… but that you've been trying to follow someone else's? In Episode 111 of Tales from The Lane, I'm joined by Amy Landino — high-performance coach, bestselling author, creator of AmyTV, and one of the most trusted voices on intentional productivity — for a conversation about morning routines, self-leadership, and what it really means to build a life that fits the season you're in. Amy shares the story of her path from working in a law firm to building a business online, growing a massive YouTube platform, and helping ambitious women create more focused, intentional lives. We talk about the difference between discipline and self-trust, why most people get morning routines wrong, and how to stop borrowing habits that were never designed for your real life in the first place. We also explore: why a morning routine is really about deciding how you want to live how your evening routine shapes everything that happens the next day the danger of copying someone else's "success habits" without understanding the why behind them how to adapt your routines as your career, business, family, and priorities evolve what it means to prepare yourself for success instead of performing productivity the mindset shift from proving you're capable to getting the support you need One of my favorite parts of this conversation is Amy's reminder that routines are not about perfection. They're about creating systems that make success more likely and help you meet your life with more steadiness, clarity, and intention. If you've been feeling like the life or work rhythm that used to fit no longer does, this episode will give you a smarter, more compassionate way to rethink your days. And if this conversation leaves you wanting more support as you plan your next season, this is exactly the kind of work I do in my Q2 Strategy Sessions and 1:1 coaching. In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate breaks down why Q2 is the most powerful and underutilized part of the year, and how to turn the next 90 days into real traction instead of more busy work. She introduces the idea of Q2 as the Quarter of Traction, where you stop performing your goals and start following through on them in a way that actually fits your life. 109: Lonely at the Top? Friendship, Leadership, and Adult Connection with Dr. Kimberly Horn
What happens when a high-achieving life is optimized for performance—but quietly hostile to connection? In this episode of Tales from The Lane, I'm joined by Dr. Kimberly Horn—research psychologist, professor, health behavior scientist, and author of Friends Matter, for Life: Harnessing the 8 Tenets of Dynamic Friendship—for a powerful conversation about adult friendship, loneliness, and what meaningful connection really looks like when you're ambitious, capable, and carrying a lot. We talk about why success can narrow your circle, why so many leaders mistake loneliness for burnout, and how high performers often become the "strong one" for everyone else while quietly feeling unseen themselves. Dr. Horn shares the hidden costs of over-functioning, the difference between being well-networked and well-nourished, and why friendship should be treated as a real health intervention—not just a nice extra if there's time left over. We also explore: the three friendship traps high achievers often fall into Why women leaders in particular can feel guarded and emotionally isolated How to "look sideways" for more resonant connection The role of reciprocity in healthy adult friendship How to recalibrate friendships as your life and identity evolve Dr. Horn's simple and practical 2-2-1 method for staying connected This episode is an important reminder that while most of us were taught how to build careers, almost no one taught us how to build friendships that can evolve with us through the changing seasons of adulthood. Episode 108: Small Systems That Create Big Momentum in Your Work and Life
Most high achievers don't struggle because they lack ambition, ideas, or discipline. They struggle because their lives are full of tiny points of friction. Small decisions. Small interruptions. Small logistical annoyances that quietly drain attention, energy, and momentum throughout the day. In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate explores the concept of friction — and how seemingly minor obstacles can prevent us from doing the work that actually matters. Through real-life examples and practical systems, she explains how removing small points of resistance can dramatically improve focus, follow-through, and clarity. You'll learn: Why we often spend more time worrying about tasks than completing them How small systems reduce decision fatigue Where friction commonly shows up in daily life Simple strategies that make the right actions easier and the wrong actions harder Why progress often comes from removing obstacles, not pushing harder Kate also shares practical examples from her own life and coaching work, including: Weekly "staff meetings" for teams of one Capsule wardrobes that reduce decision fatigue Task batching and time blocking Creating a junk-drawer workflow for loose ends Designing a simple shutdown routine for the workday If you've been feeling busy but not making meaningful progress, this episode will help you identify the hidden friction points slowing you down—and remove them. Because sometimes the fastest way forward isn't more effort. It's less resistance. Episode 107: Why the Fastest Way to Build Your Career Is to Slow Down
If you feel like everyone around you is racing ahead – launching faster, reading more, doing more, moving more quickly – this episode is for you. In this solo episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate explores a principle she first learned as a musician and now sees everywhere in life and work: Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. From music practice to reading, decorating a home, making decisions, deepening relationships, learning new skills, and building a business – Kate makes the case for moving more deliberately at the beginning so you can build something that actually lasts. This isn't an argument for procrastination or hesitation. It's an invitation to think differently about momentum, mastery, and sustainable growth. In this episode, Kate shares: What a career in music taught her about mastery and mistakes How slow decision-making can save you from fast mistakes How making one small change at a time creates lasting transformation And if you're ready to design a life and career that actually fit who you've become, Kate would love to support you. 📘 Get the book: Beyond Potential 📞 Partner with Kate as your Strategic Coach –book a call to explore 1:1 coaching 📩 DM Kate the word RETREAT on Instagram at @kkayaian for her Quarterly Retreat Planning Guide

Episode 106: Have You Outgrown Your Own Success?
You did everything you were supposed to do. You worked hard. You built the career. You earned the reputation. You became successful by every conventional metric. And now… something feels off. In this solo episode, Kate explores one of the most disorienting experiences of mid-career success: realizing that you may have outgrown something that is still working. You're still good at it. People still respect you. You're still being rewarded for doing it. But the energy that once came from challenge, growth, and purpose has quietly been replaced by obligation. Kate shares her own experience stepping away from a successful performance career in classical music—and introduces the idea of competence debt: the psychological, social, and financial cost that accumulates the better you become at something…making it harder and harder to consider doing anything else. You'll learn: Why success can quietly lock you into identities that no longer fit How to recognize when you've outgrown a goal (even one you worked years to achieve) The difference between burnout and disinterest Why envying people who've made a pivot might be more meaningful than you think How to stop confusing past investment with future alignment If you're a mid-career professional wondering what's next—and whether it's okay to want something different—this episode is for you. 📩 Want support figuring out your own next chapter? Episode 105: How to Design a Career That Supports Your Life (Not the Other Way Around)
What if the next level of your career isn't about doing more… but about designing better? In this episode, I'm joined by Laura Sinclair—performer, educator, and coach (and a returning guest from Season 1, Episode 9)—for a conversation that goes way beyond music teaching. Laura has also been a 1:1 coaching client of mine for five years, and watching her build a values-driven, sustainable studio (while performing at a high level) has been nothing short of inspiring. Yes, Laura's "Stress-Free Studio" work is centered on helping musicians build sustainable studios—but the real topic here is something every high achiever needs: How to build a career that supports your life instead of swallowing it. We talk about the invisible systems (and beliefs) that quietly create overwhelm, why "success" often starts to feel misaligned at a certain stage, and the practical shifts that help you move from survival mode into a more intentional, values-led way of working. Whether you're a performer, executive, entrepreneur, educator, or creative leader, this episode will help you rethink what you're optimizing for—and how to redesign your workflow, boundaries, and offerings so your career actually fits the person you've become. In this episode, we cover: The difference between being in demand and being in alignment Why burnout is often a systems problem—not a motivation problem How structure creates freedom (and why "the plan" matters more than perfection) The courage it takes to stop saying yes by default How to design work that supports both ambition and sustainability Freebie from Laura: 5 Creative Solutions to Rescheduling Lessons https://mailchi.mp/2ce708e36061/5creativesolutionstoreschedulinglessons Learn more about Laura: https://linktr.ee/lauraksinclair Instagram: @viola_maverick And if you want my Quarterly Retreat Planning Guide, DM me the word RETREAT on Instagram: @kkayaian and I'll send it to you personally.

Episode 104: Why So Many Friendships Struggle During Seasons of Growth (and How to Handle It)
What happens to our friendships when our lives start to expand? In this episode of Tales from The Lane, I'm joined by Dear Nina: Conversations about Friendship host Nina Badzin, whose podcast is ranked in the top 1% globally—and whose work sits right at the intersection of honesty, emotional maturity, and real-life friendship dynamics. Together, we explore what happens to friendships during major life transitions: career growth, changing family structures, shifting priorities, and the inevitable reality that we can't take everyone with us into every season. We talk about: Why friendships often feel strained during periods of growth How a single, honest conversation can sometimes change everything Redefining reciprocity so it doesn't become a silent scorecard Why proximity matters more than we like to admit—and what happens when it disappears The courage it takes to be the inviter instead of waiting to be included This is a grounded, compassionate conversation for anyone navigating success, change, and the quieter emotional work that comes with it. About Nina Badzin Nina is the host of Dear Nina: Conversations about Friendship, a top 1% podcast focused on the realities of adult friendship. Episode 103: Quiet Courage: The Decisions That Shape Your Next Chapter
We tend to think of courage as something dramatic—big leaps, bold declarations, or burning it all down and starting over. But most of the courage that actually changes your life is much quieter than that. In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate explores the non-obvious ways we flex our courage muscle—the small, often invisible decisions that compound over time and quietly reshape our careers, identities, and lives. You'll hear about: Why saying no to the easy win can be one of the bravest choices you make The courage it takes to resist performative busyness and do deep, invisible work What it means to stay open when you don't yet have a clean title or identity Why being a beginner is essential for growth (and why high-achievers resist it) When quitting is wisdom—not failure How to listen to your intuition without needing to justify it to everyone else This episode is for anyone who senses they're standing at the edge of their next chapter—and wants to build the courage to step forward, one intentional rep at a time. If this conversation resonates, you'll find these ideas explored more deeply in Kate's book, Beyond Potential. And if you want support applying this work to your own life or career, Kate is opening a limited number of 1:1 coaching spots for 2026. Episode 102: How Becoming Your Best Self Strengthens Your Community
In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate explores a question she's been asked repeatedly—especially in uncertain, chaotic times: Is it selfish to focus on your own growth when the world feels like it's on fire? Drawing on psychology, leadership, and her lived experience as both a conductor and a coach, Kate reframes self-actualization not as ego or individualism, but as responsibility. When individuals commit to becoming their best selves, they create stronger, more generous, and more resilient communities. In this episode, you'll hear: Why self-actualization was never meant to be about narcissism or personal gain How pursuing your own growth can directly strengthen your workplace, neighborhood, or industry Three practical ways individual excellence fuels collective thriving A powerful orchestra metaphor that reframes leadership, contribution, and responsibility If you've ever felt torn between personal ambition and caring deeply about the world around you, this episode offers a grounding, hopeful perspective—and a clear path forward. Episode 101: Chiseling Marble: How to Remove What's in Your Way
In this solo episode, we talk about what is REALLY standing between you and your dreams, and how to remove the obstacles. If you've been circling around the same goal for months (or years), telling yourself you'll begin "when you're less busy, when you're ready, or when you feel more confident about it," this conversation will hit home. Using the metaphor of a solid block of marble, Kate shares eight common beliefs that disguise the real obstacles—fear, overthinking, avoidance, perfectionism, friction, clutter, and outdated identity patterns. You'll learn: Why your dream doesn't require more time—but does require removing what's in the way How negative self-talk, uncertainty, and "busy brain" tasks masquerade as lack of motivation What Stoicism, hurricanes, and 75 Hard taught Kate about imperfect conditions The difference between rocking-chair tasks and true needle movers Why readiness, motivation, and discipline only show up after you begin How accountability, support, and reframing can help you start chiseling away Whether your goal is to write a book, launch a project, shift careers, or simply feel less overwhelmed, this episode will help you chip away at the noise and find the sculpture underneath. Episode 95: Quarterly Planning Retreat Day 1: Planning Your Next 90-Days
Ready to step out of reaction mode and into intention? Today we're kicking off a special 4-part mini-series walking you through my Quarterly Retreat Strategy so you can step into the next 90 days grounded, organized, creative, and clear. Most of us spend our lives reacting—putting out fires, responding to whatever shows up, and getting swept into urgency instead of alignment. This retreat is about reclaiming agency over your time, your energy, and your life—without needing to disappear to a fancy spa resort. You can do this right at home. In this episode (Day 1: PLAN), you'll learn: • How to create a "retreat environment" at home that signals your brain to slow down and think deeply • The reflective questions that reveal what worked, what didn't, and what needs to shift • How to design the next 90 days intentionally instead of reactively • How to map goals realistically so life supports you—not overwhelms you • Why how you want to feel matters more than what you accomplish This is the foundation. Today we prep, we reflect, and we design the quarter ahead with clarity and intention. ✨ Want support and structure? This week on Tales from The Lane, I'm joined by Dr. Kristen Strom — speaker, author, former English professor turned transformational wellness coach — for a deeply real, encouraging conversation about what it actually takes to stop surviving and start thriving. Kristen built the career she thought she always wanted: PhD, professor, teacher educator, mom of three, leadership roles—all the boxes checked. But behind the scenes? She was exhausted, burned out, and increasingly disconnected from herself. A single photo of her on a walk with her kids changed everything. In this episode, Kristen shares: ✨ How success on paper can mask deep misalignment ✨ The moment she realized no one was coming to save her ✨ The 3 pieces of the wellness puzzle ✨ The Be–Do–Have framework and how it can change everything ✨ One small, smart step you can take today to shift your momentum We also talk about the lies we tell ourselves ("later, later, later…"), the danger of thinking being busy means being fulfilled, and how to rebuild a life that aligns with who you've become—not who you were five years ago. Episode 82: Art, Impact, and Responsibility in a Polarized World with Conductor Alyssa Wang
What is the role of art in today's political reality—comfort, challenge, escape… all of the above? In this wide-ranging, candid conversation, conductor Alyssa Wang joins Kate to wrestle with the big questions artists, leaders, and audiences are asking right now: Does art really "bring people together"—and what does that actually mean? How do we reconcile fundraising language with tangible community impact? Can programming be both an invitation to joy and a catalyst for reflection? Where does an artist's responsibility begin and end—in the hall, on the podium, or in civic life? How can leaders speak authentically without polarizing their communities? Alyssa shares openly about purpose, impact, and leadership in an era of stress, censorship, and escalating tension—and why empathy, community building, and honest dialogue may be our most essential artistic tools. About Today's Guest: Alyssa Wang is a passionate and versatile conductor, violinist, and composer. She is the Co-founder/Artistic Director/Principal Conductor of the Boston Festival Orchestra, the Music Director of the Cincinnati Ballet, and Music Director of the Cape Symphony (MA). Episode 80: That One Thing You've Been Avoiding (and what to do about it))
We all have them—the nagging, unfinished tasks that have been sitting on our list for months, sometimes years. They weigh us down, drain our energy, and quietly whisper that we're falling behind. Episode 78: Why a Single-Minded Purpose Will Ultimately Fail You
Excellence doesn't require obsession—it requires integration. We've all heard the advice: focus on one thing, say no to everything else, single-minded purpose is the path to success. Books like Gary Keller's The One Thing and Greg McKeown's Essentialism make a powerful case for focus. But what happens when that focus becomes obsession? In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate unpacks the dark side of a single-minded pursuit—burnout, isolation, and the crushing disappointment of reaching the "top" only to find it lonely. Drawing on insights from Benjamin Hardy, research from the Harvard Study of Adult Development, and real-world examples from Yo-Yo Ma to Venus Williams, Kate makes the case for a different kind of excellence. One rooted in balance, relationships, and impact. You'll learn: Why obsession is not the same as excellence. How even your biggest achievements can feel hollow without integration. The critical role relationships and contribution play in long-term fulfillment. Practical strategies for pursuing excellence without sacrificing everything else. If you've ever felt the pressure to "go all in" on one singular purpose—or if you've achieved success but still feel something's missing—this episode is for you. Episode 76: When Saying No Becomes a Lifestyle—Rethinking Self-Care, Boundaries, and Belonging
In this episode of Tales from The Lane, Kate takes a candid look at a growing trend: using self-care and boundaries as default reasons to opt out of opportunities, connection, and growth. While the movement to prevent burnout was born out of necessity—helping leaders, parents, and professionals stretched impossibly thin—somewhere along the way, it became a lifestyle brand. And now, more and more early-career professionals are declining every extra task, gig, or invitation in the name of "protecting their peace," only to find themselves feeling disconnected and unfulfilled. Kate explores: Why self-care and boundaries matter (and where the movement started) How the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction How saying yes (even when it feels inconvenient) can build skills, networks, and community What the most fulfilled, high-achieving people do differently If you've been wondering how to balance protecting your time with showing up fully for your life and your community, this conversation will help you reframe what it means to be both intentional and engaged.
