Talk with Tenney: Gerrit Smith’s Letter Concerning the 1859 Jerry Day Anniversary Celebration

🎙️ Talk with Tenney: Gerrit Smith’s Letter and the 1859 Jerry Day Controversy In this episode of Talk with Tenney, Lauren Tenney revisits a powerful moment in abolitionist history. She reads Gerrit Smith’s 1859 letter to the Jerry Day Celebration Committee, in which Smith declines an invitation to preside over the event—declaring that only blood and insurrection could now end slavery. This incendiary statement would later be seized upon by the Democratic Vigilant Association as supposed evidence that Smith had prior knowledge of John Brown and his company’s liberatory actions at Harper’s Ferry. Following the letter, hear a response from the editor of The Anti-Slavery Bugle, who reprinted Smith’s words and pushed back against his grim conclusion—arguing that the antislavery and temperance movements were still alive and vital. Together, these writings capture the tension, conviction, and deep divisions among abolitionists on the eve of the Civil War.

Kathy Flaherty on Talk with Tenney #Advocacy for #DisabilityJustice 10282020

Kathy Flaherty has lived at the intersection of mental health and the law since her first 1L year at Harvard Law School, when she was civilly committed to a psychiatric hospital. She interned for Connecticut Legal Rights Project (CLRP) after her second 1L year, back in the early 1990's. Kathy has been the Executive Director of CLRP since 2015. CLRP provides legal representation to people eligible for mental health services from the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. One of CLRP's most important goals is to empower people with psychiatric and other labels by increasing their own ability to influence the decision-making processes that, to a large extent, control their lives. Kathy’s experiences as an ex-patient and psychiatric survivor inform her advocacy for disability justice. https://www.courant.com/opinion/hc-op-flaherty-mental-hospitals-not-answer-to-gun-violence-20180228-story.html https://www.courant.com/opinion/insight/hc-op-insight-flaherty-hartford-embrace-minor-league-20180530-story.html https://www.courant.com/opinion/op-ed/hc-op-flaherty-pratt-taxes-0427-20190427-tim6vpzzkfh4jaajue3lxo3evq-story.html https://www.courant.com/opinion/insight/hc-op-insight-flaherty-task-forces-0210-20190208-eoi7nshajbczpbzzwcpmx4k7rm-story.html https://ctmirror.org/category/ct-viewpoints/lets-talk-about-real-issues-not-trumps-mental-health/ https://ctmirror.org/2018/03/08/my-birth-certificate-is-fake-news/ https://www.courant.com/opinion/op-ed/hc-op-flaherty-court-order-mental-health-treatment-0201-20150130-story.html https://rootedinrights.org/setting-the-bar-higher-for-inclusion-in-the-legal-field/ https://studentprivacycompass.org/flaherty1/ https://disabilityvisibilityproject.com/2020/05/17/ep-77-mental-health-advocacy/ https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/10/smarter-living/disclose-disability-work-employer-rights.html

Talk with Tenney: A Conversation with Paula Joan Caplan on Trump and Psychiatry

Once you know a crucial fact about what gets called "mental illness", the debate about whether or not President Donald J. Trump is "mentally ill" disappears, and what is left is what really matters. What really matters is that President Trump apparently has no desire to change behavior that has been described as totally self-absorbed, self-referential, misogynist, racist, xenophobic, and otherwise abusive. It's ironic that the arguments on both sides of the debate about whether or not Trump is "mentally ill" are based on the one "alternative fact": that deciding who is "mentally ill" is a science. That could not be farther from the truth.  Paula J. Caplan, Ph.D., is a clinical and research psychologist and currently Associate at the DuBois Institute, Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, Harvard University. She is the author of They Say You're Crazy: How the World's Most Powerful Psychiatrists Decide Who's Normal; The Myth of Women's Masochism; Don't Blame Mother: Mending the Mother-Daughter Relationship; and numerous other books, chapters, and articles in the academic and popular media. She is a decades-long activist for psychiatric survivors and military veterans. Her most recent book, When Johnny and Jane Come Marching Home: How All of Us Can Help Veterans, won three top national awards for nonfiction. She is a multi-awardwinning playwright and filmmaker.   Open lines. psychdiagnosis.weebly.com  paulajcaplan.net

This is the first such scholarship anywhere in the world. Launches of this book will be taking place imminently in Toronto (Feb. 24) and in New York (March 11). Meanwhile, the scholarship has led to many contributions as well as mounting attacks from the media.  The significance of the moment will be discussed.   Guests include Dr. Bonnie Burstow, Lauren Spring, Efrat Gold, Sona Kazemi, Nicole Schott and potentially Simon Adam. Surviving Race: Responding to the Aftermath of Police Brutality

Headlines this week are filled with Police killing individuals in Baton Rouge, Minnesota, and New York who are African American and Latino and/or who also have a perceived disability.     African Americans being racially profiled and killed by Police is not new.  What is new and becoming more common is police violence being recorded.  These videos going live contain horrific graphic footage that the public is witnessing via social media. The anger of the people from witnessing these human rights violations is causing a ground swell.  Now, because of social media, we also have more footage of our Human Rights movements: Black Live Matter and Psychiatric Survivors are putting more light on these incidents.  What does it mean for a robot to have killed a man? If it had been a white man, would there be equal acceptance of this fate?  What changes are occurring in our society or in our relationships to the Community and the Police?  On July 15, 2016 from 9-11 PM Eastern, please join Celia Brown, President of MindFreedom International, Yvonne Smith, hoste of Late Night with a Hero, Lauren Tenney, host of Talk with Tenney, and others for this OPEN LINES CALL IN SHOW as we discuss how we can partner and strategize for human rights and racial justice,  and explore the intersection of race, disabilities, and human rights. July 15, 2016 9-11 Eastern, 8-10 Central, 7-9 Mountain, 6-8 Pacific  Call in number to be part of the program: (267) 521-0167

Our rights are quickly slipping away.  Join in the conversation as we now go full force to defeat HR 2646 the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. Today, the Murphy bill went through s supposed mark up -- and then was voted to leave committee and be presented to the House for a full vote.  Hear from Yvonne Smith and others who were there and others who watched it videostreamed.   On this very sad day, we lost a pillar of our movement, Patrick Risser.  Sarah Knutson will  join us with information about a journeying on vigil for to honor the life and contributions of Pat Risser. Talk with Tenney: OPEN LINES: HR 2646 Stop the Murphy Bill

TONIGHT! OPEN LINES -- CALL IN: SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE MURPHY BILL.   Monday night, June 13, 2016 9-11 PM Eastern 8-10 Central, 7-9 Mountain 6-8 Pacific   Lauren Tenney and Yvonne Smith will be joined by Val Marsh, Executive Director of National Coalition for MH Recovery.   Tune in for the latest updates on the efforts to stop the Murphy Bill.   Call (267) 521-0167 to speak out against HR 2646, the 'Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act'.   HR 2646 (The Murphy Bill) is going to mark up and vote between June 14 - 15, 2016.   Call in. Speak Out.   For years people have been fighting against Congressman Tim Murphy's proposed legislation that will cramp down on all of our human, constitutional, and civil rights, while perpetuating the fraud of psychiatry. This legislation is dangerous. It slashes our rights to choice, informed consent, and privacy while increasing potential profit for (p)harma and State-Sponsored Organized Psychiatric Industries.   #StopTheMurphyBill #HR2646 http://www.blogtalkradio.com/talkwithtenney/2016/06/14/talk-with-tenney-open-lines-hr-2646-stop-the-murphy-bill

OPEN LINES. ORGANIZED PSYCHIATRY AND PSYCHOLOGY IN THE MILITARY

OPEN LINES.  Monday, May 30, 2016: 9-11 PM Eastern, 6-8PM Pactic, 8-10 CALL: (267) 521-0167 to be part of the program.  People who are veterans  or friends or famiily members of those who died or who are injured are most welcome to Call (267)521-0167 to be part of the program as we honor those who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms.  OPEN LINES on Memorial Day, as we honor those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms, join Yvonne Smith and Lauren Tenney in confirming the pledge to assist veterans who are injured in war.  All too often veterans are being directed into the clutches of organized psychiatry.  Organized military psychiatry and military psychology are not often discussed, although many Americans support the idea of veterans getting support.  However, psychiatry is killing people and those who are veterans are targets for the industry.  Veterans who died because of psychiatry ought to be honored.  In addition to your calls, we will be discussing the current Bill concerning Informed Consent for Veterans, the DARPA iniatiative for implanting chips in the brains of veterans, the FOIA request showing evidence for shock treatment on veterans -- including pregnant veterans, family members who seek out psychiatric/psychological services from the VHA, and genral abuses of psychiatry.
