Living with Alopecia: Dr. Jemma Boyle on Hair Loss and JAK Inhibitors

Today I’m speaking with Dr. Jemma Boyle, who has Alopecia and shares her journey openly on her social platforms to support others going through similar experiences. We talk through her story, beginning when she first noticed signs at just ten years old, right through to now, in her thirties.Jemma opens up about the support she’s received, how hair loss has affected her day-to-day life, and the reactions she’s faced from colleagues — from wearing a wig, to going without, and then returning to work with regrowth after starting medication. After trying different medications over the years, Jemma has now explored JAK inhibitors, and we discuss what that involves and how it’s made a difference in her life. With Jemma’s medical background, she explains the process clearly and insightfully, making this episode really valuable for anyone wanting to understand more about what’s involved.I hope this conversation helps anyone who’s currently making difficult decisions about whether taking medication for hair loss is right for them — and how to begin exploring that process. As always, please be mindful that these are personal opinions based on one person’s experience. Everyone’s body reacts differently to medication, and not all results will be the same.Always consult your GP for professional advice before starting any new treatment or medication, and take time to make informed choices that are right for you.You can follow and catch up with Jemma’s Alopecia story and hair growth progress on Instagram: @drjemofficialIf you need support with an Alopecia condition contact - https://www.alopecia.org.uk/If you need support if you are going through treatment there are many amazing charities such as Macmillen and Maggies Charity. For wigs, products, help and Advice - https://katiedear.co.uk/If you have a story that you think needs to be told or you are a client that I have seen in the past purchasing wigs and you feel safe in telling your journey of hair loss, do get in touch. Are you losing hair on your eyebrows or lashes through chemotherapy treatment, or experiencing loss through alopecia? Are you looking for someone who can carry out brow restoration and leave you feeling confident about the outcome — confident enough to take that next step and book the appointment? Then this is the episode for you.In today’s episode, we’re talking — as ever — all things hair loss, but this time focusing on eyebrows. Mia from House Of Christine Headwear - Talking Hair Loss and Headwear

In this episode, I talk with Mia from The House of Christine headwear brand — a name many of you may already know and love, and perhaps even wear one of their beautiful products yourself. We talk about who House of Christine are, how the brand came to be, their values, and their vision for their clients. With making our clients feel good at the heart of both our businesses, we discuss the mindset around hair loss — whether that’s through treatment or Alopecia — the challenges people face when looking for alternatives, and the strength that can be found within the hair loss community. We also explore the different materials that work best in various weather conditions — something many of my clients ask about. We’ll also be discussing what makes House of Christine stand out from other headwear brands. The journey of acceptance and finding confidence in trying new alternatives to hair — and the strength that takes — is something we both see in our clients every day. Duncan, Men's Hair Loss, and Finding Confidence Again

In this episode, we talk about how it feels for men to lose their hair. It’s a controversial topic, as it’s often assumed that men experiencing hair loss are “okay” with it — but after fitting many bespoke hair systems for men over the years, I’ve seen the other side.Men experience many of the same types of Alopecia diagnoses as women, not just male pattern baldness. It can deeply affect their confidence, how they see themselves, and how they believe others perceive them. This is a really important conversation to share with guys who may feel self-conscious or whose confidence is affected every time they walk out the door because of hair loss.Duncan is incredibly honest and eloquent in this interview as he talks about his journey with hair loss — an experience he found, and still finds, deeply traumatic.I’m so grateful for the courage it took for him to speak so openly, with the aim of helping and supporting even just one other man going through a similar experience. So please, share this episode — it might just start a conversation that someone really needed to have.In this interview, Katie and Duncan discuss topics such as:Men’s hair lossAlopecia AreataMen experiencing Alopecia AreataAlopecia UK support groupsVisiting the GPGetting a diagnosisTrichology appointments – with Eva ProudmanNutrition and hair healthFamily supportNegative thinking vs. positive thinking – mindsetDiscussing Alopecia with friends, family, and in the workplaceHair loss and the social stigmas surrounding men and hair lossWhether you’re listening because you’re experiencing the same thing, or you simply want to gain a better understanding of this topic, you’ll come away with a real sense of how mentally tough hair loss can be.There’s something in this episode that will resonate with anyone experiencing any aspect of hair loss — so grab a cup of tea and enjoy the show!As always, it’s a sensitive topic, and some parts may be upsetting. In today’s interview, I talk to a lady who has two different diagnoses of Alopecia. Mandy May - Hair Loss journey through Breast cancer

In today’s interview, I have the pleasure of chatting with a lovely lady, Mandy May, who talks openly about her journey through breast cancer. She takes us through her experience from diagnosis, how she coped with hair loss due to chemotherapy, and how she’s doing now, a few years on.During her treatment, Mandy searched for a support group but couldn’t seem to find one that gave her the right support or the right kind of people. So, of course, the next best thing was to set up her own support group — and that’s exactly what she did.Mandy is also online, where she offers advice and keeps people up to date with her progress beyond chemotherapy. Every 4–6 weeks, she hosts a coffee morning in Leamington Spa, featuring a speaker who discusses a relevant topic to support attendees.I’ve encouraged my clients, even those who aren’t local, to attend if they can. Being around people who are welcoming and genuine can make a huge difference in how you feel about your day — and even your journey through treatment.Mandy is honest, open, and approachable — exactly the kind of support my clients need when going through the same process. I encourage anyone going through breast cancer to, if possible, attend her support group or follow Mandy on her socials. She genuinely helps anyone she can and brings a positive vibe to everyone she meets. This interview was recorded during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but support is needed all year round. It’s equally important to raise awareness about self-checks and to consult your GP if you notice any changes in your body. All the topics we discuss are included in the show notes below. As always, everything shared in this interview reflects one person’s experience. If anything resonates with you, please reach out for support. So grab a cuppa, relax, and I hope you enjoy the show.Topics Discussed in This Conversation:Oestrogen-positive cancerHair loss during chemotherapyWigs and headwearLiving with a hair condition prior to treatmentHair colour and texture changes after treatmentSensitivity during treatmentWhat to wear under a wig during treatmentBraving a shaveStress and anxiety during treatmentSelf-care during and after treatment / holistic treatmentsInduced menopauseCancer prevention medicationBreast cancer support group and what to expectFollow Mandy May on social media for updates, advice, and support @mandymay_myjourney on Instagram. If you need support with an Alopecia condition contact - https://www.alopecia.org.uk/If you need support if you are going through treatment there are many amazing charities such as Macmillen and Maggies Charity. For wigs, products, help and Advice - https://katiedear.co.uk/If you have a story that you think needs to be told or you are a client that I have seen in the past purchasing wigs and you feel safe in telling your journey of hair loss, do get in touch. Her condition first appeared in the classic small patches, but then returned — this time, much more severely. She shares the story of a trigger that caused her hair to almost completely disappear. We talk through her experience of that initial loss, the mental challenge of her hair growing back, and the heartbreak of losing it again years later. Together, we explore how hair loss impacts every part of life — from the school run, to standing beside a bride as a bridesmaid, to holding it together in front of the kids at home.Because mental health is the heart of this podcast, we also discuss the emotional toll that hair loss can take. This is an open, honest, heart-on-sleeve conversation about one woman’s journey — trying everything from steroid injections and hair systems to topical treatments — all in the hope that her hair might return.Whether you’re listening because you’re going through something similar, or you simply want to understand this topic more deeply, you’ll come away with a true sense of how mentally tough hair loss can be.There’s something in this episode that will resonate with anyone experiencing any form of hair loss — so grab a cup of tea, and maybe some tissues. As always, this is a sensitive topic, and some parts may be upsetting. Please reach out for support if you need it.Take good care, and enjoy the show.Need support with an Alopecia condition? 👉 alopecia.org.ukFor wigs, products, help, and advice: 👉 katiedear.co.ukIf you have a story that you think should be told — or you’re a past client who feels ready to share your journey with hair loss — I’d love to hear from you. Whether your hair loss is due to medical treatment or Alopecia, please get in touch. 📧 Contact me hereLet’s break the silence together — and get people talking about hair loss.Follow me: 📸 Instagram: @katiedearltd 💼 LinkedIn: @katiedearltd 🎵 TikTok: @katiedearltd 📘 Facebook: katiedearhairlosswigsIf you need support with an Alopecia condition contact - https://www.alopecia.org.uk/If you need support if you are going through treatment there are many amazing charities such as Macmillen and Maggies Charity. For wigs, products, help and Advice - https://katiedear.co.uk/If you have a story that you think needs to be told or you are a client that I have seen in the past purchasing wigs and you feel safe in telling your journey of hair loss, do get in touch. He talks honestly about the challenges, the empathy needed, and how he supports Serica through the day-to-day ups and downs of her journey. If you’re a partner, family member, or friend of someone with alopecia, this episode offers insight into supporting them in meaningful ways. Serica McLean - Lichen Planopilaris Alopecia - Speaker for the Charity AlopeciaUk

My guest today is Serica McLean, who has an alopecia condition called Lichen Planopilaris. In the first episode of this podcast, we talked about the same condition where hair loss was extremely rapid over a couple of weeks. In Serica’s case, however, it has been a very slow progression over several years.Serica shares her challenging initial journey with her GP, which lacked positive progress, and her eventual visit to a dermatologist. Of course, we also discuss the impact on mental health and her process of coming to terms with and accepting her alopecia. You’ll hear an inspirational story about her teaching in secondary school and how she raises awareness of living with alopecia among the teens she teaches every year.We also talk about her journey with Alopecia UK, finding support groups, and eventually becoming a speaker at their charity events. Serica sets a fantastic example, showing that it’s okay to be yourself however you choose — whether that’s wearing wigs, hats, or bravely embracing a shaved head — as long as it reflects your true self.Enjoy the show!Support & Resources:If you need support with an alopecia condition, contact Alopecia UKFor wigs, products, help, and advice, visit Katie DearIf you have a story to share, or you’re a past client who feels safe telling your journey with hair loss, please get in touch.
