I had a lovely time with the wonderful ladies from Stretch Panic: Cassie, MJ, and Jen. We talked video games, tea, maintaining a solid PMA when playing shows with no A/C, and how the band was destined to form. They also performed a solid set of three songs using their lo-fi setup. Husband and wife team The Muse and the Martyr (Katlynn and Frank Suchomel) are some of the most delightful people to drink tea with. In fact, I first met them at the steeping room while taking an Oolong class (highly recommended). We talked opera, Mr. T, forming a band 10 days before your first gig, and the logistics of renting a ghost town. Music-wise, The Muse and The Martyr are probably one of the most expansive sounding small bands I have ever heard; performing with deep synth arrangements, live guitar and vocals, and tons of ooey-gooey reverb to fill a church. Fire Ant Season is like Wayne's World meets Folk Punk, or Jerry Springer decides to learn guitar and play folk songs. The jokes don't always land, but seeing them resolve in an often nonsensical way is half the allure. I had the pleasure to have Nate (Guitar) and Tim (Mandolin) in the studio where we talked Fire Ant Aliens, Fashion, and alternatives to vocal warmups. Enjoy.
