Me and Steve Talk RPGs with Jay Little
Today we’re going to do something a little bit different. We’re on a short break and before we return with new recordings of our tabletop sessions but before we return we wanted to bring to your attention our friends over at “Me and Steve Talk RPGs” We’re helping each out by hosting a feed swap. A few weeks ago they hosted the first episode of our Symbaroum campaign, At The Foot of the Titans, and now this week we’re returning the favour by hosting an interview that they conducted with, TTRPG system designer, Jay Little. Me and Steve Talk RPGs was born out of those conversations that inevitably happen in the parking lot or driveway outside AFTER the gaming sessions. The two Steve’s host a podcast that is a grab bag of TTRPG related topics, stories, tips and tricks with interviews with makers and shakers from our community. Just like us they release new episodes every Tuesday so if you like what you’re about to hear check them out and follow and subscribe to their podcast wherever it is you like to listen. In this episode, from the Me and Steve Talk RPGs podcast, the two Steves meet with Jay Little, a system designer who has worked on Warhammer Fantasy Rolplaying, FFG Star Wars, and also designed the 2d20 system for Modiphious, which you might recall powered our Star Trek: Adventures games… so he’s left an indelible mark on the ttrpg world. Enjoy the listen, and we’ll be back next week when we return from our extended holiday break with our own actual play session playing Darla Burrow’s “Dear Great Cuthulu, PLEASE Stop Giving Me Super Powers!” The Terrible Warrior Theme Song is by Epic Game Music Editing by Justin Ecock

Symbaroum Post-Game with Mattias Johnsson Haake
We wrap up our incredible gaming session of Symbaroum by inviting back to the table Symbaroum’s co-creator, Mattias Johnsson Haake. This conversation was recorded fresh of the heels of our August recording sessions so while the players and GM knew how things went later in the campaign Mattias himself had only listened to the first two episodes. But after all the fun we had playing his game we absolutely had to invite him to join us for our post-game debrief. This hour will not be your typical interview with a game creator. We heap love on him and gush about the game and share our favorite story point and Mattias opens up about the design choices and some of his favourite themes in the game and how Symbaroum formed into what it has become. This is the final episode, for now, in our 12 part campaign of Symbaorum. If you haven’t listened to the complete playlist we highly suggest you go back into our feed and listen to them all before this interview, because we are going to spill the beans all over your spoiler alert. Symbaroum 09: The Road So Far...
The Beast Clan has retreated into the forest, the town puts up barriers and believes it is safe. But we know better… Before our trio begins their investigation into the mystery surrounding the woman at the Fern Tavern, they look back on where they’ve been and how they got here. More than a Recap The Terrible Warriors exists to help empower you to feel confident enough to play and run the games we enjoy here. Which is why this is much more than a recap episode, it is as much a part of our "actual play” as the rest of the story we have presented. Every GM needs to have a session, especially after a major battle or a story arc that has concluded, to take stock and let their players recount the events in their own words. A recap session like this helps equip the GM with specific information about what their players are interested in and what, up to this point, has stuck with them the most. And it equips the players with a renewed sense of motivation and inspiration as they remember why they are invested in seeing this story through. Meet the Makers: Craig Campbell (Secrets of the Vibrant Isle)
Justin connects with Craig Campbell to talk about his “cozy gaming” solo RPG, Secrets of the Vibrant Isle. The pandemic era of gaming has seen a lot of us forced to spend time alone. And if you weren’t fortunate enough to have a good internet connection and a quiet space to connect you might not have been able to replace your old gaming group with a virtual one. Perhaps that’s why there’s been a rising interest in the genre of sole RPGs. In the Secrets of the Vibrant Isle you will play a person who has chosen to sail out to this mystical place, you explore the terrain and meet it’s denizens and after four weeks of in-game time they will decide if you are allowed to remain on the Vibrant Isle or be cast away. Craig will share with us how he came to create the game, some of the design challenges he had to overcome, and what you can expect if you decide to pick up this book for your next evening of alone time. The Kickstarter is happening right now and runs until November 3rd, so there’s still time to support this unique game. Meet the Makers: Tristan Zimmerman (Shanty Hunters)
Justin connects with Tristan Zimmerman to learn more about his shanty hunting RPG, appropriately named Shanty Hunters. Tristan is the writer behind the popular Molten Sulphur blog, which offers up real world historical inspiration for your gaming table, and in November he’s launching a kickstarter for a game that combines his loves of history, storytelling, and sailing. In Shanty Hunters, you set out to capture and return rogue sea shanties back to shore. Using the gumshoe engine, each game generates it’s challenge and investigation around the lyrics of the sea shanty you’re trying to claim. It’s a wild idea and perfect for groups looking for a short one-short or limited run campaign to give yourself a break from a longer game you’re currently playing. Meet the Makers: Pete & Mitch (Chew, the RPG)
Justin connects with Pete and Mitch from Imagining Games to talk all about their latest creation, the Chew role playing game! Chew is an award winning comic book written by John Laymen and drawn by Rob Guillory. It's absurd, it's dramatic, it's grim. Behind The Screen: Sweetwater Bank
Welcome to our first attempt at going Behind the Screen, a more one-on-one conversation where Justin shares some tips and stories from his years running tabletop games. In our inaugural Behind the Screen, Justin shares the background story to his Sweetwater Bank campaign he created for 5th Edition D&D while he was hired to run games at Toronto’s Storm Crow Manor. The Challenge Justin had several challenges going into making this campaign. Primarily it needed to be able to pick-up-and-go with zero prep time and little chance to meet the players before their game. And since this game was designed for the DM&Dine Program it needed to be friendly to brand-new players as well as engaging for those who had been playing for years. The set up needed to be quick and it needed to be completed within four hours exactly, every time it was played. Finally Justin wanted to subvert some of the default assumptions of D&D and use this limited time to showcase all the different and varied ways a simple story like Sweetwater could play, this also meant that he wanted to create a story that could absolutely be completed with zero combat while also being open to the players who wanted to roll dice and cast epic spells to destroy their enemies. The Set Up The story of Sweetwater Bank is pretty simple. A tavern, run by a dwarf named Tarry, has recently gotten a reputation for an incredibly popular and possibly addictive mead. Those who try it swear it’s the best thing they’ve ever had and can’t wait to get back. In fact, many people who try it never leave and so a small village has built itself around Tarry’s Tavern solely for the purpose of being close to the mead so they can keep drinking it. However the players are hooked into the mystery, when they arrive they’ll encounter a Hill Giant that has stormed it’s way into town and collapsed into Tarry’s storehouse where all his mead is being kept. But not everything about this encounter, nor this village, is as it seems. Over the next four hours the players will be tasked with unravelling the mystery of Sweetwater Bank, foiling a plot to steal Tarry’s secrets, and deciding for themselves the fate of the town and it’s residents. Special Thanks Special thanks to Sean Horbatiuk for joining us so that Justin could bounce his rambling ideas off of him. Music is licensed through Epidemic Sound Keep an eye out on our Patreon Page at patreon.com/terriblewarriors where supporters will be getting a copy this month of Justin’s Sweetwater campaign. It will be rules-agnostic and can serve as a framework for a story set in the game of your choice. If you do decide to play Sweetwater with your group let us know by mentioning our twitter account @dicewarriors!
