The A-Trane Radio Program CFRO

Jazz and creative music from all eras and styles curated by Nou Dadoun.  Focusing on new releases, birthdays and significant musical calendar events, and performances & releases relevant to the musical community in Vancouver, Canada and the World!  The music has roots in Black experience so every month is Black History Month.  Women are important contributors and participants in this music so every day is Women in Jazz Day.  We celebrate music that has the joy of creation, that knows where its been and (often) tries to see where it's going. The A-Trane has been on the airwaves on community radio in Vancouver since 1982 and the current host has been in the broadcaster's chair since 1986.  Every show starts with a different version of our theme "Take the A Train" relevant to the date or Vancouver performances and then continues with a piece performed or inspired by John Coltrane. Always engaging, sometimes challenging, never boring - the best in Jazz & Creative mus

The A-Trane 2026-05-01 - Lateef RSD, Minemoto, Miles Pre-BotC, BDs

Just some musical fun on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, lotsa birthdays with nods to Duke's last week (an extended 1949 arrangement of the theme with the orchestra gets us going), Ambrose Akinmusire, Shirley Horn, the late Carlos Ward, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, James Newton and an oblique recognition of the centenary last week of Chicago impresario Joe Segal whose Jazz Showcase archives are being mined by Zev Feldman for a series of Record Store Day releases.  Today's feature is a  tremendous Yusef Lateef quartet which includes Kenny Barron from 1975 - Alight upon the Lake!  A preview of the new project Goodbye Strawberry Hill from Sharon Minemoto that tells her family's story from the incarceration and separation of her family and the Canadians of Japanese heritage in the Second World War to their resilience and optimism of the present day.  Her quartet's performance at the Anvil Theatre in New West tomorrow evening (May 2nd) will also feature a screening of a short documentary about the project - highly recommended! Also kicking off the Miles centenary celebrations this month with the Birth of the Birth of the Cool - the 1948 Miles Davis Tuba Band concerts that preceded Miles legendary collaboration with Gil Evans and others.  A number of Miles Centenary concerts in Vancouver this month (many presented by Infidels Jazz) will touch on some of this great material! We'll also hear from Fred Frith who will do a rare solo performance at the Revue Stage this Sunday (that Infidel certainly gets around!) and Anna Webber whose music will be featured by John Korsrud's Hard Rubber Orchestra later this month! We celebrate our own International Jazz Day every Friday at Vancouver Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM or coopradio . org starting at Two Pacific - you should too!If you want to follow along, here's the playlist! The A-Trane Radio Program with your host Nou Dadounon every Friday afternoon from 2pm to 5:30 pm PacificCelebrating jazz & creative music in Vancouver since 1986100.5FM or coopradio.org  Check it out!
