the anthrotographer
by the anthrotographer
‘the anthrotographer’ is a pod interested in studying the human condition and creating new media inspired by what's learned. We enjoy discussing weighty themes in films, books, history, current events or whatever the hell else interests us. With some educational background in both Anthropology & Video Production (plus amateur independent researching) hopefully what is created both provokes thought and is informed. anthrotographer.substack.com

28 - Propaganda, Session #2
On this episode we analyze chapters 1-3 of the book ‘Propaganda’ by Edward Bernays. Concepts like the “invisible government” and “regimenting opinion” are among some of the topics covered in these sections. 26 - Propaganda, Session #1
On this episode we review the Introduction of the book ‘Propaganda’ by Edward Bernays and analyze our relationship to it. This is the first episode in a series of podcasts on the book. Excuse the long tangents into certain historical moments, but fleshing out these ideas is what long form media’s for. In this new year of 2026, the over saturation of media and the propaganda disseminated through it, will be at an all time high. Understanding what’s behind the messages we are exposed to is essential to deciphering what is true or false in our confusing world. Questions like “who benefits from this?” and “are these sources credible?” are things we should always ask of the propaganda facing us. This podcast is not immune. If anyone out there wants to question our sources or has something to contribute to this open conversation, comments and messages are encouraged.Timeline* (0:30) What is ‘propaganda’?* (7:15) How propaganda led Americans into WWI & WWII and some background on the wars* (17:10) America’s ‘hidden industrial policy’ (Pt.1)* (25:15) The natural human instinct to propagate itself* (28:00) Christianity’s influence on modern propaganda* (31:20) New Years and other holidays are propaganda exercises* (37:00) The “manufacture of consent” was seen as a necessity* (42:30) The progressive future of America as a selling point* (49:50) Propaganda games around Zohran Mamdani* (53:55) What is the anthrotographer as a propaganda project* (55:35) America’s ‘hidden industrial policy’ (Pt.2)* (1:05:15) Bernay’s thesis and purpose for writing the book* (1:15:20) Why Capitalists have a propaganda edge* (1:22:00) The myth of objectivity* (1:30:20) ‘Bread and circuses’— Propaganda as distractionSupplemental Sources* ‘Propaganda’, Edward Bernays* ‘The Capital Order’, by Clara Matte* ‘The Entrepenuarial State…’ , Mariana Mosukato* ‘Profit Over People’, Noam Chomsky* ‘Requiem for the American Dream’ (Film), Noam ChomskyMusic* ‘Focus’, by _BY.ALEXANDERFollow* https://tr.ee/W8xXr88JIK (YouTube)* https://tr.ee/uJj9Un_kgQ (IG)(Spotify)(ApplePodcasts) This is a public episode. 19 - Reflections on Human Exceptionalism
I’ve been thinking a lot about Human exceptionalism. I wanted to speak with my friend Rachel about these certain topics, not only because I knew we’re like minded on these sorts of things, but because she always has insightful things to say. So we met up at the beach to talk. I hope you enjoy the sounds of nature and this glimpse into our philosophical conversation.Timeline* (30s) Introducing Human Exceptionalism w/ Rachel* (4:50m) Other species live more in balance* (10:00m) Matriarchal leaders opposed to patriarchy* (12:50m) Elephants and other intelligences* (20:45m) How Science and Spirituality might actually mix* (23:30m) Experiments that might allude to a missing spiritual link* (31:15m) Do we feel limited being human?* (34:50m) Purpose* (41:50m) Control of food and its effects* (47:00m) Is it human nature to be greedy? 17 - Exploring Inca Civilization & Hiking Machu Picchu
(Recorded 4.26.25)This week I Zoom called my friend Rachel to discuss her recent hiking trip to Machu Picchu in Peru. We start by talking about an interesting book rec centering on Spirituality. Then she explains the wondrous moments of the trek and some things she learned about the Inca. This sparked my curiosity so I did some research to learn more about them. I have a long interlude here explaining some important historical context about the Inca. What happened to the Inca? How long did their civilization span? Geographic range of the Incas? How did they build their architecture and giant structures? Is any of this knowledge contested or still undetermined?Sorry for the abrupt ending. I had to splice this recording up quite a bit. 16 - Family Discussion About Paths Forward
(2.6.25) I have a backlog of recordings that I’ll be releasing soon in an effort to get up to date.I connected with a very important person to me for this discussion. The topics herein were wide ranging. I recapped my recent trip to cover the January 20th Innauguration of President Trump, where we set out to talk to protesters. Our conversation also delved into our country’s disgraceful attitudes and policies towards people who are unhoused. We spend a bulk of the time theorizing about how society is constructed, by whom and who does it serve, with a focus on where we as regular human beings can build from here. 14 - Luigi & Health Insurance Evils
On this episode of the anthrotographer, a few weeks after the notorious killing of a health insurance CEO that sparked nationwide conversations, it was time to have my own. I invited a friend of mine (that will remain anonymous) who works in the health insurance industry to discuss his views on life within the system and how he sees the assassin Luigi Mangione. We have a great conversation about the cultural significance of Luigi’s support and disdain, the inner workings of the bloody industry that is health insurance, and why profit is valued over human life.Links:(Website) anthrotographer.com(Substack) the anthrotographer(Instagram) @thee.anthrotographer(YouTube) the anthrotographerMusic:'United Health' by Jesse Welles This is a public episode. 12 - Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Session #2
On this episode of the anthrotographer we continue to breakdown the classic 1968 book Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire. We start halfway into chapter 1 and finish out the chapter in this episode. The next episode or two will focus on chapter 2. This will be a multiple episode series, made way better with voice over work by the lovely Nicole.Freire's book dives deep into the power dynamics of the modern world, where we have an 'oppressor' class and an 'oppressed' class. He analyzes the psychology that breeds this relationship and the educational system that is bedrock of it, while presenting a more humanizing and revolutionary education model. I’ve been frustrated about different political happenings and trends so this turned into a bit of a rant at times. I jump from one idea to another pretty quickly (partly due to some editing decisions as well), but hopefully it’s a cohesive listen. Here are the list of topics: (1:00) power of conversation, (3:30) the sadism of oppressors, (5:40) stress associated with relationships, (10:30) Palestine/Israel: they are justifying genocide, (15:13) debunking Kamala, Trump & the media’s lies, (26:45) Israel’s pager attack on Lebanon, (29:15) U.S./Israel breaking laws of war, (30:45) American Nazism, (36:00) what is democracy, and its connection to sustainability, (45:00) Indigenous wisdom. 7 - In the Time Machine w/ Ryuichi Sakamoto to Witness the Death of Stalin
On this episode of the anthrotographer I wanted to share some music by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cho Young-Wuk (1:00m). Part of my review of the famous story by H.G.Wells; 'The Time Machine' (7:25m). This story really made me go on a tangent on what TIME even is (15:00m). Following on that thread I discuss a documentary called 'The End of Time' (24:20m). My review of the new Zendaya movie 'Challengers' (26:00m). Another film review about 'The Death of Stalin' (31:00m). Let me also introduce a special guest, my buddy Santi (40:40m). We sit and talk about some music but also if ART should be seperated from the Artist. 5 - Ceasefire Now, Parkland Vigil & Profits Over Life
On this episode of the anthrotographer I cover a recent protest that I attended. It was a protest/vigil honoring those that were killed in the 2018 Parland, FL mass shooting and those that have been killed in Gaza in recent months. Vice President Kamala Harris was visiting Marjory Stoneman Douglas Highschool recently and this event focused on protesting the U.S. government, which she leads, that values the profits of weapons manufacturers above human life. To skip my long winded intro go to (11:00). Listen to what the people at the event had to say. 4 - Palestine/Israel, Political Lives of Dead Bodies & I Am Cuba
The word of the week is; Interesting. In this episode of 'the anthrotographer' I spoke on some thought provoking movies I've seen recently, the first being 'Planet of the Apes' (3:45). A sci-fi classic that in a way humbles humanity in its portrayal of our devolution. I felt compelled to talk about the most important active event in world affairs; the genocide happening in Palestine (20:45). I try to discuss it in a thoughtful way with some historical context. But a better podcast to check out on the subject is 'Bad Faith'.I spend some time talking about some passages in the book 'The Political Lives of Dead Bodies' (40:25). And finish off with some ramblings on the classic 1960s film 'I Am Cuba' (55:20).Socials:(X) @anthrotographer(Instagram) @thee.anthrotographer(YouTube) the anthrotographer(Tumblr) the anthrotographer(Web) anthrotographer.comMusic: 'Candela' by Buena Vista Social ClubSources:https://youtu.be/86Nrv5izaTs?si=2cbSwYUuM5Lw5D6phttps://www.youtube.com/@BadFaithPodcasthttps://www.avclub.com/the-new-cult-canon-i-am-cuba-1798213846 This is a public episode. 2 - Planet of the Humans, Oppenheimer & The Jungle
In this recording I start out by talking about the medium of podcasting and how other shows inspired me to get into it. Then I spend the majority of the pod discussing a few powerful films I've seen recently. 'Planet of the Humans' is a documentary about climate change, the effects of human expansion and the dissapointing and doom inducing realities of the "green energy movement". 'Oppenheimer' is another one where I get into the awesome power of the bomb and human fallibility. There is a small music jam session in the middle there. I play a clip or two of the renowned scientist James Lovelock answering questions about the future of earth's habitability. And finally at the end I review a few chapters of Upton Sinclair's famous novel 'The Jungle'. Of which I will revisit in a future episode. I know, it's a bleak rundown. Not every episode will be like this.Music: 'Gretel' - Alex G This is a public episode. 1 - Octopus Plants, Intellectual Property, & Manufacturing Consent Pt. 1
This was the first episode so I was a bit nervous and novice to the process. I talked about a striking invasive tree that I found in my neighborhood. Then I covered for the majority of the episode Noam Chomsky's documentary called 'Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media'. It is an eye opening film about how we are all under a sort of thought control that benefits an unequal and imperialistic society. It's heavy stuff and I will revisit it in the next few recordings probably. I also went on a tangent about the concept of Intellectual Property because it feels like a ridiculous inhumane concept.Music: 'Above Below' - Eddie Chacon This is a public episode. ABOUT THIS SHOW
‘the anthrotographer’ is a pod interested in studying the human condition and creating new media inspired by what's learned. We enjoy discussing weighty themes in films, books, history, current events or whatever the hell else interests us. With some educational background in both Anthropology & Video Production (plus amateur independent researching) hopefully what is created both provokes thought and is informed. anthrotographer.substack.com
