Why great songs outlast great production

This week’s episode moves between live performance, studio thinking and the changing nature of how music is made and consumed.Martin reflects on running a live theatre production and the pressures of real-time sound, where there is no opportunity to stop and fix mistakes. Billy shares recent gig experiences, including the importance of preparation and what happens when things go wrong on stage. The conversation develops into a wider discussion about songwriting, production and how modern music is created. There is a comparison between band-based writing and more production-led workflows, and whether current chart music prioritises sound over substance. The album feature focuses on 30 Seconds To Mars’ A Beautiful Lie, looking at arrangement, performance, and why certain records build long-term connection through craft rather than just production. The Apollo Audio Podcast is hosted by Martin Lumsden (record producer and engineer) and Billy Hills (musician and studio owner), and is recorded at Apollo Audio Hertford. Each episode offers insight into songs, records, and the creative process, drawn from real-world experience in studios and making music.📍 www.apollo-audio.co.uk📷 Instagram: @apolloaudiopodcast📧 [email protected] Apollo Audio Podcast is Froody Music Production. Get the sound right at source: studio habits that actually matter

This week’s episode starts in the rehearsal room with a sold-out hardcore night at Apollo Audio and a wider look at why live music and young bands are still thriving. From there, the conversation moves into the fundamentals that separate average recordings from great ones. Martin and Billy discuss common mistakes bands make in the studio and on stage, including preparation, tone choices, gear decisions and why relying on fixing things later often leads to worse results. There is practical advice on capturing performances properly, managing dynamics, avoiding over-processing and making decisions earlier in the process. The discussion also touches on live performance discipline and how small details can make a significant difference. The album feature focuses on Prince’s Purple Rain, exploring its production approach, live recording elements and why it remains one of the most important records of its era.The Apollo Audio Podcast is hosted by Martin Lumsden (record producer and engineer) and Billy Hills (musician and studio owner), and is recorded at Apollo Audio Hertford. Finding Your Sound in the Studio

This week’s episode moves from the studio floor into the bigger picture of how records actually get made.We compare two very different recording approaches. One is a live in-studio session where a band captures performance and energy in the room. The other is a more detailed production process, building a track step by step from a simple guitar and vocal demo. There is also a wider discussion around finding your sound, making decisions early, and understanding how arrangement and collaboration shape the final record. In the second half, we listen to the latest release from Ye and discuss how it compares to earlier work, both musically and culturally. If you are working towards your first recordings or thinking about how to develop your songs into finished tracks, this episode gives a clear view of what that process can look like. Why Your Music Isn’t Getting Paid

Most independent artists are not getting paid properly from their music. Not because streaming does not work, but because the system depends on information being set up correctly. In this episode, Martin and Billy break down one of the most overlooked parts of releasing music. Metadata, recording codes, and songwriting registration. The unglamorous details that determine whether money reaches you or disappears. They also talk about the reality of building momentum as an artist now. Why releasing a song is no longer enough, and what it actually takes to stay visible and relevant.Alongside this, they listen to Paul McCartney’s 1971 album Ram and discuss what still holds up today. John Mayer’s Continuum – Great Guitar, or Just Too Perfect?

In this week’s episode, Martin and Billy talk pedals, plugins, and the difference between building a sound you can actually own versus pressing a button and borrowing someone else’s. They get into live guitar setups, tracking tones properly, why “inspiration not replication” still matters, and how technology makes it easier than ever to sound like everyone else.In the recommended listening section, they dive into John Mayer’s Continuum — a beautifully played, brilliantly produced record that raises an interesting question: when does “really good” become almost too polished? They discuss the guitar work, the songs, the production, and whether this is an album they admire more than love.Recorded at Apollo Audio Hertford.Topics include: John Mayer, Continuum, guitar pedals, plugins, guitar tone, recording guitars, production choices, analog vs digital. R.E.M. – Automatic for the People and why small venues still matter

This week we talk about gig culture: last-minute ticket buying, dynamic pricing, bots, and why buying tickets early genuinely helps venues survive. We also reflect on the difference between “event gigs” and being five feet from a band in a proper room and why supporting grassroots venues is how future headline acts get made.Album-wise, we dive into R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People - a downbeat, confident record packed with slow-burn hooks, careful arrangements, and emotional weight. We compare it to Out of Time, and ask a bigger question: what actually makes a “great album” — commercial hits, sequencing, or the whole journey? If you’re making music, playing shows, or building an audience: support your local rooms, buy tickets early when you can, and keep the ecosystem alive. Sun Kil Moon – Tiny Cities and why album sequencing matters

In this week’s episode, Martin and Billy talk about music tech and internet culture — from K-pop production as a “craft flex”, to the current state of AI video and why it still gets the basics wrong. They also dig into a list of “albums that tarnished an artist’s legacy”, and end up on a bigger question: why album sequencing matters, why shuffle shouldn’t be the default, and what it says when tech platforms treat records like randomised content. In recommended listening, they cover Sun Kil Moon’s Tiny Cities - an unexpectedly divisive pick that turns out to be a Modest Mouse covers album. They discuss why a few tracks land, why the album as a whole feels flat for them. It's been a sad week as we lost several very influential musicians from various eras and genres, so we pay our respects before digging in to the third album from UK crossover dance act The Prodigy. Keith Flint is another artist who left us too soon but he was at the forefront of the biggest commercial and critical hit from a band that have had a hugely successful career and are still being covered today - including by Billy's own band Body who have a surprising connection. If you want to know more, you'll have to listen :)The Apollo Audio Podcast is hosted by Martin Lumsden (record producer and engineer) and Billy Hills (musician and studio owner), and is recorded at Apollo Audio Hertford. After two weeks of feeling subjected to dire depressing tunes Billy enacts revenge by insisting on reviewing the lengthy and musically complex third album from Tool "Lateralus". This week Martin is joined by Lemmi Eaton who regularly performs and releases solo work as Garage Canvas and as a member of the band High Dives. Recommended Listening: The Queen is Dead by The Smiths

Well, Billy wasn't 100% convinced but fairly sure if it was a straight fight between this and The Boatman's Call this would win on points. Morrissey and Marr were the Lennon and McCartney of the 80's but their long term legacy doesn't quite have the deep cultural relevance of The Beatles, however the UK Indie scene was based on the foundations built on the back of this band's short time in the limelight. Recommended Listening: Paranoid by Black Sabbath

We've reconvened after a short break to let Billy climb an actual (not metaphorical) mountain and a lot happened while we had a little rest - not least of which was the sad passing of Ozzie Osbourne, just a matter of days after the celebratory final Black Sabbath gig. We'd already decided it was time we investigated the fathers of Heavy Rock and fair to sat neither of us really knew what we were getting in to.Thankfully and fortuitously our rambling was interrupted by an actual lifelong Sabbath fan (and actual Brummie) in the form of our resident expert singing teacher Loz.And Martin forgot how microphones work, but I think we got away with it.The Apollo Audio Podcast is hosted by Martin Lumsden (record producer and engineer) and Billy Hills (musician and studio owner), and is recorded at Apollo Audio Hertford. The album's lead single "Untitled (How Does It Feel)", earned him the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance; likewise, Voodoo won Best R&B Album. Rolling Stone ranked the album number 28 on its list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (remember that?) calling it "an album heavy on bass and drenched in a post-coital haze".The Apollo Audio Podcast is hosted by Martin Lumsden (record producer and engineer) and Billy Hills (musician and studio owner), and is recorded at Apollo Audio Hertford. So we finally come to one of the biggest names in British rock of the last 30 years. We've covered quite a lot of 90's and early 2000's without really getting in the Britpop and these of course are the daddys when it comes to Cool Britannia. By 2000 however some of the shine had worn off, and history tends to list this particular album at the bottom of the pile when it comes to the Gallagher long players - but we are here to show it some love. In at attempt to recapture lightning in a bottle we seek out another American singer songwriter with a great reputation and a tragic death - although we didn't really know about the death bit when we made the choice. Officially titled just Peter Gabriel, but also known as Peter Gabriel III or "Melt" due to the cover art, it has a couple of Gabriel's best known tracks and sonically set a template for much of the sound and themes of early Eighties pop music, with the gated snare sound taking on almost legendary status.Check out The Ghost's Companion by Millionth Chance thru Bandcamp here or on Spotify here if you prefer.Don't forget to let us know your nominations for the best album of all time - be prepared to defend your choice, we may be asking questions!
