    Offbeat: Percy Grainger

Send us Fan MailWelcome to Offbeat—a new Band Dads series where Chris and Scott go beyond the music to explore the fascinating, unusual, and sometimes downright bizarre stories behind the figures who shaped band, music education, and the art form we love. And if you’re going to start somewhere… you might as well start with one of the most offbeat figures of them all: Percy Grainger. When an episode opens with a conversation about a composer’s private whip collection—one he donated to a museum in his honor (and yes, the number will surprise you)—you know you’re in for a ride.In this episode, the Band Dads dive into the life of one of the earliest and most influential composers for wind band. A brilliant musical mind with a deeply complex and, at times, troubled personal life, Grainger challenges us to consider a timeless question: can genius and turmoil exist separately—or are they often intertwined? From his early years as a piano prodigy, to his uniquely close relationship with his mother, to his bold personality and unconventional worldview as an adult, this episode explores what made Grainger both groundbreaking and controversial. His approach to composition defied tradition—reshaping tonality, structure, and the very idea of what wind band music could be. The result was a body of work unlike anything before it… and arguably unlike anything since. But the conversation doesn’t stop in the past. Chris and Scott also ask the question: How would someone like Grainger be received today? Would he still be celebrated? Would he be controversial? Would he even be someone we’d invite to work with our students? This is a fun, thought-provoking, and eye-opening look at one of music’s most fascinating figures—and just the beginning of what Offbeat has in store.🎧 As a bonus, check out the links below for virtual walkthroughs of the Grainger Museum and dive even deeper into his world.ABC ARTS - Grainger Museum Walkthrough Part 1ABC ARTS - Grainger Museum Walkthrough Part 2Dallas Wind Symphony - Lincolnshire PosyU.S. Marine Band - Children's MarchPercy Grainger plays his "Molly on the Shore" Original on PianoU.S. Marine Band - Molly on the ShoreEnjoying the show? Contest Season : Behind the Curtain

Send us Fan MailWhat Band Directors Face When It’s Just ThemEven when marching season may be over, the competition hasn’t stopped. This time of year, band programs shift into a world that many parents and even students don’t fully understand: concert band contest season. The format is different, the pressure is different, and for band directors… the stakes can feel even higher. In this episode, the Band Dads take a deep dive into the world of concert band evaluations—where directors stand alone. Unlike marching band, there’s no large instructional staff to lean on. Every musical decision, every rehearsal moment, and every result falls squarely on the shoulders of the director. It’s a setting where music educators truly put their craft on display—and where reputations are often built. We break down:What concert contests actually look likeHow ensembles are evaluatedHow music is selected—and how it should be selectedWhy these performances matter so much in the world of music educationFor parents, this is an inside look at a side of band that is just as competitive and meaningful as anything on the field—if not more so. If you’ve never experienced it, this episode might just convince you to attend. And if you really want to be amazed? Go watch a sight-reading performance. It’s one of the most impressive displays of musicianship you’ll ever see.We also cover a few key etiquette tips so if you do attend, you can be a great audience member in what might feel like unfamiliar territory.Because while the uniforms may be gone and the field lights turned off… the real test of musicianship is just getting started.Enjoying the show? Leadership Season

Send us Fan MailIt’s that time of year again—band directors everywhere are rolling out their processes for selecting student leadership teams for the upcoming fall season. The decisions made during leadership season can shape the culture, tone, and success of a band program long before the first rehearsal of summer band even begins. In this episode, Scott reflects on a time when he realized he got it wrong. A leadership selection that didn’t produce the results he hoped for forced him to step back, rethink his entire process, and work backwards from the outcome he actually wanted. What kind of leaders did he want his students to become? What culture was he trying to build? And how should the selection process support that vision? From that reflection came a five-step approach designed to identify the right leaders and develop the characteristics he wanted to see throughout the band. Scott walks through that process and shares the lessons learned along the way.The Band Dads also offer perspective for parents navigating leadership season with their own students. Is it Drum Major or bust, or should families take a broader view of what leadership in band can look like?As always, expect thoughtful insight, honest reflection, and plenty of entertaining moments in another great episode of the Band Dads Podcast.Make sure to also check out musicleadership.com to find Scott Lang's newly launched, fully customizable Leadership Training and Selection System app. The flexibility of this tool makes it perfect for all programs regardless of their desired outcome!Enjoying the show? The Real Band Wives Part 1

Send us Fan MailThe Real Bandwives – Part OneWhat’s it really like to be married to a band director? In this special two-part episode of the Band Moms Podcast, Shannon, Becky, and Leah welcome guest Libby Denny for an honest, funny, and eye-opening conversation about life as a “Band Wife”—or as some call it, a Band Widow.Shannon and Becky flip the script and step into the role of interviewers, digging into the realities for Leah and Libby of what it means when your marriage, your schedule, and sometimes your sanity revolve around marching season, concert prep, and late-night rehearsals. What are the hardest parts? What are the unexpected blessings? And yes… are there any juicy stories?Libby shares her unique perspective—not as a band parent, but as someone whose relationship has been shaped by the activity itself. In fact, she and her husband Miles met in battery, so band has quite literally been part of their story from the very beginning. That lived experience offers insight into how a band wife views the activity differently than a band parent—and what perspectives are most helpful when navigating relationships with your band director. This enlightening and refreshingly candid conversation turned out to be so good, it had to become two episodes. The Highest Bidder

Send us Fan MailWhat if band directors were treated like elite, in-demand coaches? In this thought-provoking episode, the Band Dads explore a bold idea using a comparison from the sports world. Lane Kiffin is a high-profile college football coach known for being constantly pursued by programs, frequently changing jobs, and commanding attention and salary offers based on perceived value and potential—sometimes even more than past results alone. So what if band directors were viewed the same way?Unlike most classroom positions with guaranteed enrollment, band directors must recruit, retain, train, and compete. Their results are public, their programs help generate revenue, and their presence (or departure) can reshape a school’s culture for years. Yet when it comes to compensation, they’re typically treated no differently than positions that don’t require any of those additional demands.Scott makes the case that band directors shouldn’t be viewed like traditional classroom teachers—and that it may only take one forward-thinking school (possibly even a charter school) to recognize their true value with a competitive, negotiated offer. If that domino falls, could band director compensation and mobility change nationwide?Of course, opening that door raises difficult questions. What happens to programs that can’t afford to compete? Do lower-income schools fall even further behind? And what unintended consequences might follow? The conversation then expands into an even bigger “what if”: could something like NIL exist for high school band? Incentives such as lessons, instruments, tailored schedules, scholarships—or even direct compensation. Would that elevate programs… or undermine the spirit of the activity? This episode isn’t about answers—it’s about challenging assumptions. Join the Band Dads for a candid, insightful discussion on value, equity, and what happens when we open the activity to the highest bidder.Enjoying the show? One Last Time - The Band Mom's Podcast

Send us Fan MailThe Band Moms are back—and this week, it’s Becky’s turn in the spotlight. In this touching, funny, and deeply relatable episode, Shannon and Leah invite Becky to reflect on what it means to be the mom of a senior and to look back on the entire band journey she and her son have shared over the years. From those first nervous early experiences to the final milestones of senior year, Becky walks us through the full life cycle of being a Band Mom.From watching her 4'11" freshman board his very first solo band trip… to standing on Main Street at Disneyland cheering on that same kid—now a confident 6' senior—Becky revisits the countless moments that shaped their family’s connection to band. And what quickly becomes clear is that the growth, memories, and meaning have belonged just as much to her as to her son.Becky also shares how stepping into roles like feeding the kids and helping with uniforms kept her closely connected, not just to her son and to the activity she already knew and loved, but to the people who became her community. Through those moments of service, laughter, long nights, and shared chaos, she built deep relationships with fellow band parents—bonds so meaningful that the thought of leaving this band family behind after her son graduates feels almost unimaginable.Whether you’re a veteran band parent or just beginning your journey, Becky’s reflections will make you laugh, make you think, and maybe even make you tear up.Take the time with these amazing Band Moms—this conversation is absolutely worth the listen.SHOW NOTES:There were so many mentions of show notes to keep track of the editor lost count and ultimately hopes they still have a job for him once they take over this podcast.Enjoying the show? Myth Busters

After promising in every intro that they’ll “debunk all the myths,” the Band Dads are officially making good on their word. In this first installment of what is sure to become a fan-favorite series, Scott and Chris take on 10 of the biggest misconceptions in the band world… five about band kids and five about band directors. On the Band side, the Dads dig into classics like: • Are band kids athletes? • Is marching band actually a sport? • Do bands go to competitions just to win? • Is marching band only for nerds? • And the all-timer… “Marching band isn’t that hard—anyone can do it.”Then they turn the spotlight to the podium to debunk myths about band directors, including: • Band directors don’t have lives outside their job • They just want kids to play LOUD • They’re always serious • They know exactly what they’re doing (all the time… really?) • And the big one: band directors are unapproachable and hard to talk toAs always, expect honest perspective from both a band parent and a music educator, plenty of laughs, a little bit of learning, and a whole lot of “Oh wow… I never thought of it like that.”Strap in—this one is equal parts truth, empathy, and pure Band Dad energy.Enjoying the show? Defining Success

Send us Fan Mail🎺 What really defines success in a marching band season?🥁In this episode of the Band Dads Podcast, Scott and Chris dig into that very question — are scores, tapes, and placements really the only way to measure success? Or is there a deeper, more meaningful way to celebrate what bands accomplish each year?Scott challenges Chris to revisit his data analyst mindset and explore alternate metrics that could highlight the achievements that often go unnoticed. What if we looked at retention rates, program growth, rehearsal hours, attendance, challenges overcome, and other signs of progress as measures of success? Could we create an alternate scorecard for the season — maybe even start with a “Most Improved” award? The Band Dads ponder these questions and more in a thought-provoking conversation that reminds us: there’s more to recognize at the end of the season than a ranking or a recap sheet. Seasons of a Season

Send us Fan MailAfter months of separation (and Scott’s excruciating longing), the Band Dads are finally back together again — no guests this time, just Chris and Scott doing what they do best: shooting the breeze about band, life, and everything in between. In this episode, the dads put a surprising twist on the marching season by asking: Does Strauss–Howe’s generational theory apply to band? They dig into how students, parents, and programs might cycle through stages of High, Awakening, Unraveling, and Crisis. Do kids and parents hit those stages at the same time? What stage are Scott, Chris, and you — the band family — in right now?Of course, it wouldn’t be a Band Dads episode without some laughs and a few curveballs. The guys unpack the grind of the season, how to push through the lulls, and how to create positive moments that keep the tough ones from pulling you down. Along the way, they even share a shocking revelation from their inbox (spoiler: it’s not a bot). And to top it all off, the dads send a special shout-out to Harrisburg High School and the Tiger Marching Band, who graciously provided this week’s intro — and stick around to the very end for a special outro chant you won’t want to miss!Enjoying the show? Beyond the Music - Band Keeps Kids Safe

Send us Fan MailOn September 10, 2025, the United States witnessed two unnecessary tragedies: the Evergreen High School shooting in Colorado and the fatal shooting of activist Charlie Kirk. That same evening, while already in the studio, the Band Dads pressed record for an impromptu, unrehearsed, and raw conversation about these events—and about a bigger question that’s hard to ignore:If we already know that belonging to inclusive, creative groups like band changes lives, why do we keep accepting violence as if it’s unsolvable? We explore whether those who commit these acts might have chosen differently if they had been rooted in an inclusive, supportive, and productive community. Why are subjects like English and Math required, yet programs like Band—proven to shape character and create lifelong connections—remain optional? This year, the U.S. will spend $4 billion on measures meant to protect kids from violence in schools. But what if even a fraction of that was redirected to programs that address the cause at its source?Politics aside, this is about culture and priorities. We ask:What will it take for people to stop accepting violence as inevitable? If the answers are already in front of us, why aren’t we demanding them? How can families, educators, and communities push for real change? This episode isn’t about easy solutions. It’s about pausing, reflecting, and confronting the uncomfortable truth: we know community saves lives—so what will it take to make it happen?Enjoying the show? Darrin Davis : From Camp to Competition

Send us Fan MailIn this episode of the Band Dads Podcast, we’re once again joined by Darrin Davis — one of the premier minds in the marching arts, current DCI and BOA judge, and the former director of the four-time Grand National Champion Pride of Broken Arrow.Together, we dive into what happens starting at camp and go through the competition season:What is the true objective by the time students leave those long, hot summer days? How much influence do judges’ critiques really have on shaping a show? Are show moments ever deliberately held back for maximum impact later in the season? How late can changes still be made? And the big question: is a show ever really finished?Darrin brings a candid and refreshing perspective, revealing that while the details may vary, the heart of the activity never changes — and it’s not about chasing the highest score. It’s about growth, experience, and creating something unforgettable together. This is not just “part two” — it’s the rest of the story.Thank you to the Coyote Pride from Campo Verde High School in Gilbert Arizona for our intro this week!Enjoying the show? Inside Band Camp - Part 3

Send us Fan MailInside Band Camp – Part 3: This is the end my friend In the final installment of our band camp docu-series, we continue into the sounds, sweat, and spirit of the high school marching experience. This episode kicks off inside a battery percussion sectional, where you'll not only hear the drive of the drumline but also get a breakdown of the lingo and learn what all that rhythmic jargon really means. We also shine a spotlight on the true MVPs behind the scenes — our Booster Band Moms, who spent their entire Saturday fitting uniforms for every single student in the program. Their dedication keeps the band moving (and looking sharp), and it's time they got their flowers. In a spontaneous twist, Chris finds Scott hanging out at camp, leading to a raw, unscripted Band Dads conversation recorded live and unfiltered — just two dads soaking in the experience. We then drop in on an inspiring clinic led by acclaimed educator Mark Richardson, Assistant Director of the Sun Devil Marching Band and founder of The Academy Drum & Bugle Corps. His insight and energy offer a masterclass in musicianship and motivation. Finally, we close out with the band directors themselves, reflecting on the week: What went well? What didn’t? Did they accomplish what they hoped? What’s the vibe moving forward? Their reflections bring full-circle closure to the camp experience — and set the tone for the season ahead.Whether you've been with us since Part 1 or you're jumping in now, this episode is a celebration of the people, passion, and purpose that make band camp unforgettable.Enjoying the show? You'll hear directly from the student leadership team as they open up about how band has shaped their identity, challenged them to grow, and taught them lessons far beyond music.Next, go inside a color guard sectional where we meet McKinley, the group's caption head — a former student of this very band camp who now returns as an instructor, helping to shape the next generation with the same energy and commitment that once inspired her.We also have the priveledge to introduce the powerful story of Jaxon Landfair, a beloved former student whose spirit continues to live on in this program. Jaxon’s parents, Jay and Jessica Landfair, join us to share the story of their son — his passion for music, the impact band had on his life, their journey through his Leukemia diagnosis, and the strength it took to stay hopeful through it all. Their words are heartfelt, courageous, and unforgettable.Whether you're a band parent, student, alumni, or supporter, this episode offers a powerful reminder: band is more than just notes on a page — it's family, resilience, and legacy.Enjoying the show? A (Useless) Year in Review Part II

Send us Fan MailWe’re back with Part 2 of our deep dive into the most useless cirriculum with the most valuable outcomes in schools today: music. This time, the Band Dads pick up where they left off, moving beyond marching season and into the concert, winter guard and percussion contest, and spring event stretch that closes out the school year. From winter concerts to final performances, they continue exploring the lessons, challenges, and unexpected wins that define a year in band. The big questions still apply: – What value did we get? – What lessons did we learn? – Can you learn something new doing the exact same thing you did the year before? – Does your grade level change the value you receive? – Who figures it out first—the kids or the parents?Whether you're reflecting alongside your own band student or just trying to make sense of the organized chaos that is music education, this episode brings it all home with perspective, laughs, and some heartfelt moments.Special thanks to the South Moore High School Bands for providing the fantastic custom introduction that kicks off this episode—what a way to start! And to all the incredible Band Moms (and all moms everywhere): we wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day.
