The Job Search Mistake No One Warns You About - EP 142

A friend of mine got asked one simple question:“What salary are you looking for?”…and she froze. Not because she didn’t know how to negotiate. But because she hadn’t asked herself the questions that come before that one. This episode is about that moment. And why negotiation isn’t something you do when you get the offer…it’s something that starts way earlier than that.If you’ve ever felt unsure, unprepared, or like you’re just picking a number and hoping for the best… this one is for you.#CareerGrowth #WorkLifeBalance #PhysicianLife #BlackDoctors #CareerClarity #BurnoutRecovery #careerdoctor #WomenInMedicine #ProfessionalGrowth #MindsetShift #Careernegotiation #NegotiationCoach #drsheneka

The Lie Keeping You Stuck in a "Good Enough" Job || EP 141

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately… How we can be in a job that looks “good on paper”… checks a few boxes… gives us some flexibility… and still feel like something isn’t right. And instead of leaving, we stay. Not because we love it, but because a part of us is convinced… “this is probably the best I’m going to get.”In this episode, I’m walking through the very real, very human thought patterns that keep us stuck in roles we’ve outgrown. We talk about:Why your brain convinces you what you want doesn’t existThe fear of leaving something “good enough”Feeling grateful… while also feeling deeply unhappyThe quiet belief that maybe you don’t deserve moreAnd how to start shifting out of that stuck Because the truth is… you’re not stuck.Your brain is just trying to keep you safe… even if “safe” is slowly draining you. This is a conversation about awareness, choice, and starting to imagine something different… without immediately shutting it down. If you’ve been feeling that tension… this episode is for you.Give this video a like and hit the SUBSCRIBE button for strategies that protect your time, money, and energy.Find Me On Social Media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theblkdoctor/LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/sheneka-horne #CareerGrowth #WorkLifeBalance #PhysicianLife #BlackDoctors #CareerClarity #BurnoutRecovery #careerdoctor #WomenInMedicine #ProfessionalGrowth #MindsetShift #Careernegotiation #NegotiationCoach #drsheneka

Trying to Do Medicine The Right Way...in a Broken System || EP 140

In this episode, I’m literally getting ready for work and just talking through what’s been on my mind lately. No script, no outline… just real thoughts about what it feels like to be practicing medicine in this current climate.Because it’s a lot. There are doctors out here doing amazing, ethical, patient-centered work. And then there are people doing the absolute most… unnecessary labs, questionable treatments, pushing products, building entire platforms off fear. And patients don’t always know the difference. So now we’re in this position where:we’re trying to build trustwhile also being grouped into a system people don’t trustwhile also trying not to burn ourselves out in the processAnd then on top of that… you’ve got the system itself.Insurance. Pharma. Hospital admin.Everybody pulling from different directionsand somehow the doctor is still expected to just… hold it all together.I also talk a bit about locums in this episode, because even in those spaces, you’re still seeing the same themes. The same expectations. The same quiet pressure to sacrifice more than you probably should. And I’m really sitting with this question right now:Are we supposed to fix medicine from the inside?Or is the real work going to happen outside of it?If you’re in healthcare, thinking about entering it, or even just trying to understand why things feel the way they do right now… this episode will probably resonate.Give this video a like and hit the SUBSCRIBE button for strategies that protect your time, money, and energy. What If I Don't Want The Next Big Thing?

What happens when you’ve done everything “right”… and still feel burnt out, unfulfilled, or unsure what’s next?In this episode, I gets real about ambition, burnout, and the uncomfortable space of not having a clear next step. From stepping away from my medical director role to questioning the constant need for achievement, this is an honest conversation about identity, pressure, and learning how to slow down.If you’ve ever felt like you should be happy because you’ve checked all the boxes… but something still feels off, this one is for you.In this episode, I talked about:Burnout (and why it can happen more than once)The pressure to always be achieving- Identity shifts in medicine and entrepreneurshipLetting go of timelines and “linear” success- Learning to rest without guiltCreating space for creativity and what’s nextSometimes the most important thing isn’t the next move… it’s giving yourself permission to pause.Let me know in the comments:Have you ever felt stuck between wanting more and wanting peace?Give this video a like and hit the SUBSCRIBE button for strategies that protect your time, money, and energy.

Locums 101: What They Don't Tell You (But I Will)

In this episode, I’m breaking down everything you need to know about locums. From how to get started, to choosing agencies, to understanding how pay and contracts actually work. This is the conversation I’ve had with so many doctors behind the scenes, and I wanted to bring it here.I also share how locums helped me build the confidence to walk away from a role that no longer served me, because I had evidence that other opportunities exist. We talk about negotiation, recruiters, red flags, and the real benefits of locums beyond just the paycheck. If you’ve been curious about locums or feeling stuck in your current role, this episode will give you a clearer picture of what’s possible.#theblkdoctor #blackdoctors #blackwomeninmedicine #blackphysician #womeninmedicine #drsheneka #blackdoctorcollectivepodcast

When Doing Everything Right Still Isn’t Enough

In this episode, I shared the story behind a big decision I recently made: resigning from my role as Medical Director. When I accepted the position earlier this year, I believed I could help improve systems within the clinic and support the staff in meaningful ways. And in many ways, I did exactly that. We implemented new communication tools, created policies, and made operational changes that strengthened the practice. But the experience also revealed something deeper about the emotional labor of leadership. Particularly when you are navigating spaces where hypervigilance becomes part of your daily experience. In this episode I talk about the pressure to be perfect, the way mistakes can be magnified while successes go unnoticed, and why relying solely on external validation can slowly erode your confidence. I also discuss something I emphasize often on this podcast: the importance of internal validation. Learning to create your own metrics for success so that someone else’s criticism doesn’t erase everything you’ve accomplished. This conversation is honest, reflective, and a reminder that sometimes the healthiest choice is stepping away from environments that no longer support your well-being.Connect with me on: Instagram: @theblkdoctor You've got any questions, shoot me an email: [email protected] #DrShenekaHorne #podcast #blackdoctor #blackdoctors #blackwomeninmedicine #blackwomeninhealthcare #blackresidents #careercoach #negotiationcoach #physiciancoach #theblkdoctor

The Power of Walking Away - Why I Resigned As Medical Director || EP 136

In this episode of The Black Doctor Podcast, Dr. Sheneka shares the story behind her decision to resign from her role as Medical Director. After spending a year trying to implement meaningful change at her clinic, she realized something many physicians experience but rarely say out loud: burnout often comes from working in systems that force you to ignore what you know is right for patients. This episode explores the tension between leadership, values, and physician burnout, and why sometimes the healthiest choice is stepping away from a role that no longer aligns.#theblkdoctor #careerdoctor #physiciancoach #podcastforblackdoctors #theblkdoctorcollective #blackwomeninmedicine #blackphysicians #negotiationcoach

Breaking Free from the Box-Checking Mindset in 2026

I took a much-needed step back over the past couple of months, and in this first episode of the year, I’m sharing honestly about where I’ve been mentally, professionally, and creatively. While reflecting recently, I found myself thinking about something Michelle Obama has spoken about often, being a “box checker.” Following the path that looks successful on paper. Doing all the right things. Hitting every milestone. For a long time, that was me.But at some point, I had to confront a hard truth. The very structure I had been following for years was no longer functional for me… and in some ways, it was actively harming me.In this episode, I’m talking about:- How the box-checking mindset can quietly lead to burnout- Why being constantly busy can keep us disconnected from what we actually need- The subtle ways we fall back into old coping patterns when life feels overwhelming- What it looks like to pause, reassess, and begin building a framework that actually supports your lifeIf you’ve been feeling stretched thin, stuck in survival mode, or questioning whether the path you’re on still fits who you’re becoming, this conversation is for you.As we move into this new year, I’m asking myself one simple question…What do I need right now?I invite you to sit with that question too.Connect with me:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theblkdoctor/LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/sheneka-horneEmail: [email protected]

Regrets, Boundaries and Rebooting Ambitions | S5 EP. 134

Sometimes the hardest conversations are the ones we have with ourselves. In this final episode of the Black Doctor Collective Podcast, I get real about my negotiation regrets, the lessons I’ve learned from asking (and not asking) for what I want, and why staying too long in places, whether in business, coaching, or medicine, can become a silent regret.I also share a personal update: after months of quietly stepping back, I’m officially pausing my coaching, closing this chapter of the podcast, and taking a break to focus on the next phase of life and work.We talk about:- Why the biggest regret isn’t hearing “no”—it’s never asking at all- How respectability politics and people-pleasing can hold you back- The spiral staircase of growth: revisiting challenges at a higher level- Learning to advocate for yourself without over-explaining- Why ending chapters is an act of courage, not failureThis episode is for anyone who’s ever hesitated to ask, worried about what people might think, or stayed longer than they should have.🎧 Listen now and reflect with me as we close 2025 and step into 2026 with intention.Follow me on Instagram for more career & negotiation insights: https://www.instagram.com/theblkdoctor/Let’s connect on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/sheneka-horneGot questions or comments? Inside The Health Justice Fight - Why This Black Dermatologist Became an Attorney | S5 EP. 131

Y’all… this episode right here? Whew.Buckle up.Today I’m sitting down with Dr. Natalie Moulton-Levy - a 20-year board-certified dermatologist who looked medical racism dead in the face during COVID… and decided the ONLY way forward was to go back to school and become an attorney.Yes. You heard that right.Doctor. AND freshly barred lawyer.Because if there's one thing Black women are gonna do… it's whatever it takes to protect our people. In this conversation, we get into:- What she witnessed during COVID that shook her to her core- The moment she realized “helping one patient at a time” wasn’t enough- Why she built the Health Justice Initiative (HJI)- The REAL legal barriers that keep Black and low-income patients from receiving equal care- Imposter syndrome, ageism, and what it’s like to go back to school at mid-career- How she balances medicine, law, motherhood, AND community activism- What it truly takes to do purpose-driven, justice-centered work without burning out If you’ve ever wondered:“Is staying in medicine helping… or am I just upholding the system?”Or if you’ve thought about changing careers, expanding your impact, or doing something “unconventional” in your physician journey…THIS is the episode you need. And listen, Dr. Moulton-Levy didn’t go to law school to flex. She went because Black and brown patients are still being denied care, denied coverage, and denied dignity. And somebody had to step up.This is what it looks like to let purpose be louder than fear.About Dr. Moulton-Levy:Dr. Moulton-Levy is a board-certified physician with almost 20 years of experience and a newly-barred attorney. Throughout her practice, Dr. Moulton-Levy has experienced inequities in medicine first hand, and patients seek her out specifically because they have faced discrimination elsewhere. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, she volunteered at a hospital caring for COVID patients, which shed new light on the realities of medical inequality and medical racism as low-income Black and Brown patients were denied access to ventilators–their lives valued less than others. While her medical practice has allowed her to engage in problems of inequity on an individual-patient basis, she witnessed how medical and legal barriers intertwine to systemically deny care to certain groups of people. In 2021, she reached a point in her career when she decided to go to law school to address these issues on a more systemic scale. Because of the structural dimension of medical inequity, a law degree enables her to take an intersectional approach to addressing the legal aspects of the healthcare system in the United States to better advocate for those whose voices are not being heard. Creating HJI is her way of fighting for the New York she believes in, where everyone’s life holds equal value and everyone receives the physical, mental, and gender-affirming healthcare they deserve. You need clarity. And once you get clear, the wins show up in places you didn’t even know to expect.Inside the episode, I break down:• The power of naming your season (hello, sabbatical!)• What I negotiated that changed how I practice medicine• Why aligned values at work matter as much as compensation• How time, space, and boundaries made me a better doctor• Why serving yourself first is the key to serving others wellIf you're tired, burnt out, underpaid, or just feeling off — listen. This might be the reminder you needed.👉 Listen now and start imagining what your dream life could look like — without fear. And if you enjoy the episode, leave a review or share it with another Black doctor who needs the permission to choose themselves today.

But what happens when the purpose that once inspired you now feels like a burden? In this final May episode of “The Doctor You Said You’d Be” series, I’m talking about how the early messages we receive about purpose, service, and sacrifice can trap us in roles that no longer reflect how we want to live. But there are definitely other ways. In this episode, I talk about how to make meaningful changes right where you are, without having to start from scratch.I’m sharing real examples of how doctors have reworked their roles, advocated for what they needed, and made their current jobs actually work for them. We’ll cover:Why setting boundaries and reassessing your goals is essential, even after you land the “dream” job.How to evaluate your environment and decide what needs to change. What it looks like to pivot in your current role instead of burning it all down. Why you don’t need to know every step to get started—you just have to be willing to try something different. You don’t have to stay miserable, and you don’t have to start over either. Do you ever feel guilty for taking a vacation? I just got back from a trip, and even though I felt refreshed, I still found myself rushing to catch up. That guilt? It runs deep. In this episode, I’m talking about what it really means to rest, the pressure to always be available, and why your career shouldn’t feel like something you have to escape from.I’m also challenging the belief that you have to choose between mission and money. That if you’re passionate about the work, you shouldn’t expect to be paid well. If you’ve ever been told you’re “doing it for the right reasons,” but the pay doesn’t reflect your value, this one’s for you. We’ll talk about:The toxic belief that being mission-driven means sacrificing financial security. Why vacation can’t be the only place you feel rested, and how to change that. How organizations try to underpay doctors in the name of “passion.”The hidden costs of burnout when you’re undercompensated, overworked, and under-supported.You can do meaningful work and still demand meaningful compensation. Episode 119: The Dream vs. The Daily Reality

You had a vision of what becoming a doctor would look like—meaningful work, a deep sense of purpose, maybe even the kind of career you saw portrayed on TV. But over time, that dream got buried under charting, billing issues, and wellness programs that don’t actually help you feel better. In this episode, I talk about the gap between what you imagined and what your day-to-day has become, and what it actually takes to reclaim the version of medicine and life you envisioned. Because just surviving the week isn’t the goal. You can shift things without blowing up your entire life. We’ll discuss:Why so many doctors feel disconnected from the version of themselves they dreamed of becoming. How exhaustion, sunk costs, and systemic pressure keep us from imagining something better.A client example that shows how small shifts at work can create major changes in how you feel.A simple reflection to help you reconnect with the doctor you thought you’d be and decide what needs to change.Your dream is still valid. We all say we want ease—but are you actually choosing it? In this episode, I’m talking about what it really takes to build a soft life and why it’s not as effortless as it seems. The soft life isn’t a luxury—it’s a decision. We’ll talk about:Why a soft life takes more discipline than hustle. What it really means to say no, especially when money, guilt, or other people’s reactions are involved. How to shift your thinking when you’ve been equating ease with laziness.A practical way to audit your week and start making space for rest right now.Ease is something you build, one intentional choice at a time. Episode 113: It’s Your Season—Time to Bloom

It’s time to stop playing small. Opportunities don’t just wait around for you. I just heard someone say, “If you don’t go after your opportunities, they move on to someone else.” It shook me up! Whether it’s negotiating for what you’re worth, making a bold career move, or finally going after that dream, this is your season to step up and claim it. But that also means letting go of some of the things that scare you and focusing on what you truly want.Let’s talk about:Why opportunities pass you by when you don’t take action. How being unapologetic isn’t about being loud—it’s about being deeply committed to what you want. Why letting go of people-pleasing is essential for real growth. The importance of committing fully instead of waiting for the “perfect” moment. Why celebrating your wins (without downplaying them) is key to long-term success. You’ve done the work to overcome doubt, fear, and failure. Episode 112: You Didn’t Fail—You Just Stopped Too Soon

What if the moments you’ve labeled as failures weren’t failures at all? So often, we walk away too soon, convinced that one setback or rejection means we weren’t meant to succeed. But what if the only difference between success and failure is deciding to keep going? In this episode, we’ll discuss:How self-doubt convinces us to quit early and why persistence matters. The biggest myths about failure and how they keep us from trying again. Why a strong self concept is important for moving past obstacles. How to separate your mistakes from your self-worth so they don’t define you.A simple mindset shift that will change how you approach setbacks.I’m challenging you to revisit something you’ve given up on—because what if success was just on the other side of one more try?Join us in The Any Day Negotiator Group Program, where we don’t let failure hold us back.Got questions or comments? Episode 111: Feeling Fear and Doing It Anyway

If you’re still waiting to feel ready before making a move, this episode is for you. Fear has a way of keeping us stuck, convincing us that we need more time, more research, or more certainty before we act. But fear isn’t a stop sign, it’s just part of the process. In this episode, I break down:Why fear isn’t proof that you’re unprepared and why waiting won’t make it go away. The research trap—how over-preparing can become just another way to procrastinate. How to start with small, intentional steps even when uncertainty is high. The role of the right support system in helping you follow through. You don’t have to feel ready to take the first step. Episode 110: Who Am I to Ask for That?

How many times have you stopped yourself from asking for something—more pay, better hours, extra time off, or even your food prepared the way you want it—because you convinced yourself it was too much? Maybe you thought you hadn’t earned it yet or that people would judge you for even trying. Problem is: if you don’t ask, the answer is already no.In this episode, I talk about the shifts that make asking easier, why we hesitate even when we know we should, and the challenge I want you to try this week to start breaking the habit of holding yourself back. We’ll discuss:Why we hesitate to ask for what we want—and how to recognize when you’re doing it.The stories we tell ourselves about why we can’t ask and how they hold us back. What happens when you make asking a habit—and why it’s not as risky as you think.A simple challenge to help you practice asking without overthinking it.The only way to get what you want is to start asking. Episode 109: Taking Control in Uncertain Times

Alright y’all, I know I’m not the only one feeling it—these times are a lot. The political landscape, workplace instability, and uncertainty about the future can make it seem like we have no control. And honestly? It’s exhausting. But while you can’t change everything, you can decide how you show up, advocate for yourself, and build security on your own terms. You are not powerless. In this episode, I cover how negotiation isn’t just about contracts—it’s about creating options, recognizing your power, and making decisions that serve you.Let’s talk about: How uncertainty and instability can lead to feeling stuck—and what to do about it. Why negotiation is a tool for taking control, even when things feel uncertain. The ways we hold ourselves back from asking for more and advocating for change. Episode 108: Taking Ownership of Your Doctor Identity

In medicine, it’s easy to become who the system expects you to be. You adjust, you accommodate, and before you know it, your identity at work is shaped by everything but your own goals. But you don’t have to accept the role that’s handed to you—you can decide who you want to be.In this episode, I explore why doctors often undervalue their leadership potential, how the culture of medicine reinforces self-doubt, and why taking ownership (even without an official title) can completely change your experience at work. We’ll discuss: How the culture of medicine conditions doctors to feel inadequate—and how to unlearn it. Why leadership isn’t about a title, it’s about how you show up. Stories of doctors who changed their work environments by taking ownership. The power of deciding who you want to be instead of reacting to your surroundings.Your role at work isn’t something assigned to you—it’s something you define. Episode 107: Stop Saying No To Yourself Before You Even Ask

Too often, we shut down possibilities before we even explore them. We assume the job we want doesn’t exist, that we can’t negotiate for more, or that asking will only lead to disappointment. But that assumption is holding you back.In this episode, I break down the waysmicrodosing disappointment can limit our opportunities, and how we unknowingly (or knowingly) say no to ourselves before we even try. Here’s what you’ll take away from this episode:How we try to avoid disappointment but end upmicrodosing disappointment which keeps us stuck in jobs and situations that don’t serve us.A real-life example of my friend and fellow doctor who assumes her dream job doesn’t exist— before even looking. How awareness of what you’re thinking and feeling helps you make better choices. If you’ve been holding yourself back from asking for more, this episode will challenge you to rethink what’s possible.Join us inThe Any Day Negotiator Group Program where we take action towards our dreams. Got questions or comments?Send them here.

Episode 106: Navigating Difficult Conversations: Set the Stage

Negotiations don’t end when a contract is signed—they’re ongoing. Conversations about responsibilities, expectations, and compensation all have negotiation elements. But too often, we avoid setting a clear premise, unsure of how it will be received. In this episode, I break down why direct communication makes negotiations easier, why we hesitate to do it, and how ongoing conversations shape your career in ways you might not expect. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why setting the premise for any conversation makes negotiations easier. How to advocate for yourself without fear of burning bridges. Practical strategies and scripts for handling uncomfortable conversations. How to recognize when you have leverage—and how to create it when you don’t. Workplace conversations can be uncomfortable, but avoiding them doesn’t make things easier—it just gives away your power. Episode 105: Saving Yourself: Building a Career That Works for You

Sometimes, saving yourself means rethinking your career. This episode is about being unconventional in putting your needs first, creating time for yourself, and redefining success. Let’s talk about: Why self-preservation starts with setting boundaries and challenging career norms. How taking time off can open doors to new opportunities and fresh perspectives. Why trial and error is essential when building a flexible, sustainable career. How shifting from surviving to thriving begins by prioritizing what truly matters. The best way to show up for others is to start prioritizing your own needs. If you’ve been hesitating to make a change, this episode will remind you that it’s never too late to start saving yourself. From sky-high penalties to jaw-dropping restrictive covenants, this disaster of a contract is a perfect example of why you need to read the fine print. Buckle up, this one will make you rethink what you’re signing. This episode will teach you: Key red flags to watch for when reviewing a job contract. Why you should never skip over penalties and restrictive covenants. How bonus structures and vague language can trap you into unfair agreements. Episode 103: Rest Isn’t Earned— It’s Essential

Let’s talk about rest- not just sleep, but the kind that helps you recover, reflect, and reconnect with what matters most. Inspired by another doctor’s recent sabbatical, I unpack why taking intentional breaks is necessary.  What you’ll learn in this episode: Why it’s ok to have even more questions after a sabbatical.  How to navigate guilt and societal pressure around taking breaks or working less. The connection between rest and creativity, and why unstructured time is vital for answering life’s big questions. Why you’re already enough, even if you never do “another thing” in your career. Rest creates the space to heal, spark creativity, and rediscover your priorities. It isn’t something you have to earn- it’s a fundamental part of life. If you’ve been pushing through burnout or waiting for the “right time” to step back, this episode will challenge how you think about rest and its role in your life. Episode 101: How To Create a Career and Lifestyle That Aligns with Your Priorities

Too often, we tell ourselves that we’ll find time later—for hobbies, rest, or the life we want outside of work. But the truth is, “later” doesn’t just happen. And taking the first job offer that comes along often locks us into roles that don’t leave space for anything else. In this episode, I’m challenging the way we make decisions about our careers. I share how I started with small, intentional changes that helped me carve out more time for myself and how those adjustments grew into a career and lifestyle that prioritize my needs—not just my work.  Here’s what you’ll take away from this episode: A real-life example of how a doctor evaluated a job offer that didn’t align with her entrepreneurial goals. How to handle the pressure from family when they want you to choose the “safe” option. Job alternatives like locum, per diem, and part-time positions - and how to find stability in these roles without job-hopping. Episode 99: Cutting Ties: Why Letting Go Can Be the Key to Growth

Alright y’all, this week’s topic can be a sensitive one. Sometimes the people in our lives can’t come with us to the next level. Whether it’s family, friends, or colleagues, growth often means setting new boundaries. This can lead to judgment, guilt, or feeling misunderstood. In this episode, I’m sharing my own experience with outgrowing relationships and the impact it has on both my personal and professional growth. We’ll explore: Why the fear of outgrowing others can hold us back from our full potential. How the stories we carry from childhood shape the way we navigate success today. The importance of releasing relationships that no longer serve our growth. Real-life examples of how I’ve had to set boundaries and let go of relationships to keep moving forward. If you’ve been holding onto relationships that no longer support your growth, this episode will show you how cutting ties can help lead to greater success. Episode 98: Avoiding Unpaid Work: How to Protect Your Time and Energy

Unpaid work can sneak up on us- taking on extra tasks, solving problems. Sometimes that is driven by imposter syndrome and trying to prove our worth by doing it all. Sometimes it's a trauma response; no one can do it as efficiently.  But here’s the truth: saying “yes” to everything doesn’t make us better doctors, it just leaves us drained. Instead of asking, “Can I do this?” it’s time to start asking, “Should I?” or “Do I even want to?” The best way to prevent unpaid work is awareness. This episode will help you: Understand why overcommitting feels rewarding at first but leads to burnout in the long run. Reframe how you approach requests to confidently say “no”. Prioritize your energy and protect your career. If you’ve been carrying the weight of everyone else’s problems at work, it’s time to take a step back. Episode 97: Challenging Imposter Syndrome: Stop Holding Yourself Back

Let’s talk about imposter syndrome. It’ll convince you to play small, stay quiet, and avoid asking for what you deserve. But here’s the thing: you don’t need to earn rest, or work to deserve fair pay, or the career you want. In this episode, I’m breaking down: How imposter syndrome is different from self-doubt; and why you need to know Why asking questions and communicating your needs are the KEY tools in getting what you want. Common roadblocks you may face when negotiating for more money, flexibility, or clarity. Real-life wins from doctors who have overcome imposter syndrome to earn more money and time. Episode 96: Retiring My Cape: Choosing Liberation

Hey y'all, I skipped last week's episode because I needed time to process everything— this recent election has left a lot of us with some heavy emotions. In this episode, I'm talking about the anger, frustration, and deep need for self-preservation that many of us, especially in the Black physician community, are feeling right now. The erosion of federal policies is adding more pressure to our already demanding roles.  But I also want to acknowledge my own privilege in this conversation—I can be in this mindset because I’ve negotiated for more time freedom and autonomy in my career. I’ve created the ability to be picky about how, when, and with whom I work, and that privilege allows me to prioritize my well-being. I want this for you too. It's time we all re-establish our autonomy, negotiate our boundaries, and get what we need to thrive despite whatever systemic challenges are on the horizon.

Episode 94: Recovering from Physician Trauma: Navigating Work, Life, and Personal Growth in Medicine

In today’s episode, I’m talking about something we don’t address nearly enough: the traumatic behaviors we learned in medicine. Inspired by a fellow doc’s post, I reflected on how our medical careers can go from being a passion to feeling like “just a job” after years of this patterned trauma. Here’s what we’re getting into: - The danger of being hyper-independent (thanks to medical training) and why asking for help doesn’t make you weak - The crazy amount of responsibility and liability we carry, and why it’s so important to get that we integrate work into our life and not vice versa - My approach to balancing clinical duties, running a coaching program, and refusing to work at my maximum capacity—(shoutout to therapy for the insights 🙌🏾) Plus, I’m guiding you through a visualization exercise to help reveal your truest desires and redesign your life around what’s really important. Tune in for some honestly vulnerable conversation and actionable tips on how to avoid the comparison trap and make mindful choices that work for you.

If you've ever wondered if you're asking for too much, this one's for you.
